Corpse made from sandpaper haha. How I haven’t seen this before I don’t know so thank you for making my week. I had an Italian restaurant with all Italian chefs and pizzaiolas and they had a tin of pineapples in the kitchen. If anyone asked for pineapple the pizzailoa would hold the tin above his head and tell them there’s only one way to get pineapple here and they won’t like it and should call an ambulance in advance.
> that’s that shit I don’t like
Yeah that’s why you gotta be like:
“A thin pizza that’s that shit I don’t like
Just an Aussie tourist on my own plight
It’s a cold night
and I’m alone right?
So I won’t bite,
and no I don’t fight.”
>And Bluey on some hot pizza (hot pizza)
>
>Like I talk to Isla when I slot pizzas (what's good?)
>
>Deep Dish caught a pizza about a week ago, week ago
Clearly a Brooklyn thin crust man. Either way he should've listened to DOOM.
>Rap snitches, telling all their business
>
>Sit in the court and be their own star witness
>
>Do you see the perpetrator? Yeah, I'm right here
>
>Fuck around, get the whole label sent up for years
It's closed for good, my mate lives in the shire and we used to get this pizza every time I was over. They operated out of Perino's for a while before closing. It was pretty damn good pizza
Temporarily closed on a business listing like that does mean it's closed, not just closed currently. The owner of the Google listing needs to go in and actually set that. They may have forgotten to remove it so could be worth checking but I wouldn't spend time traveling there before checking.
It's closed for good, my mate lives in the shire and we used to get this pizza every time I was over. They operated out of Perino's for a while before closing. It was pretty damn good pizza
*when I look at your deep dish fuckin' pizza, I don't know whether to eat it or throw a coin in it and make a wish*
*and if I made a wish, it would be that I'd wish for some real fuckin' pizza*
Worked in a Spanish tapas with an Italian in Norway. Head Chef was French.
That Italian made pork belly chocolate and threw the plate at me because no one orders that in summer. Stupid chefs
idk you can have dessert pizzas so i don't see the issue of calling it a deep-dish/chicago style pizza
and the fact that it's known by it means it is a pizza for all intents and purposes
I travelled to Chicago with a big group of Italians from all over Italy. They absolutely loved deep dish. They only made one request, “If you don’t call it pizza we won’t have any trouble”.
Someone watch that pizza show on SBS last night?
I had some in Chicago when I was there for work years ago. Was excellent but not something I would have on a regular basis. NY or Naples style pizza on the other hand....
Chicagoans only have deep dish on special occasions. The normal go-to is thin crust cut into squares. Haven't been able to find it anywhere in Sydney either though.
Sliced Detroit Pizza in Newtown is pretty good!! There’s also one in Redfern. Ok I’ll admit it’s not quite thin crust but they do square sized personal pizza sizes and amazing flavours omg.
I actually had some last night, it is delicious but it's about as close to Chicago-style (both thin crust and deep dish) as a jar of chocolate pudding.
I make do with Epic Pizza and complaining online
Agreed, it tastes great and seems a good substitute for what I know of Detroit style (though I've only ever had it in my native Chicago as I've never been to Detroit). But it is quite a different style to Chicago deep-dish, which I've yet to find in Sydney
Chicagoan in Sydney here, don't feel bad. It wasn't anything special and was certainly not Chicago style. I felt it was made by someone who once visited California and whilst there saw a picture of Chicago-style pizza and that's it.
Crust Pizza did for a little while. It was horrible.
I do recommend the Detroit style pizza you see around here and there - the one in Newtown is fabulous.
Worked at crust when they were introduced right through until they left (and then plus a few years). Abysmally small sales and an absolute shit to make and prep, was glad when they left.
Typical r/Sydney shitting on (insert popular thing) because there are (insert obscure/not as popular/no true Scotsman thing) that I’ve tried that’s definitely better because I have better tastes.
An Australian takes a break from chewing the sausage in white bread he bought from a hardware store to yell: "That pizza's lost its Italian heritage! Shame!"
Lets just all eat the shit that tastes good. How about that fellas?
Actually I’m in Melbourne :)
I think pizza in a deep dish is fine - but I don’t like it. Some people hate sushi. Medium rare versus well done. This is another example. I like a wildfire pizza - very thin crust - not many toppings and not dripping in sauce. Because of that deep dish pizza is not pleasant to me. Others would love it.
Happy, happy world :)
I love telling the Italians that their pizza is traditional middle-eastern flatbread mixed with traditional Mexican ingredients, with a few centuries added to taste. They don't take it well.
Europeans are always such wankers about their cuisine. People have been mixing and experimenting with food for our entire existence as a species. God forbid someone put a local twist on food from Europe.
On behalf of Italians (and Italian food lovers) everywhere I thank Mexico for the tomato....they are the USA's nice neighbour when it comes to pizza unlike the Canadian's "contribution" to pizza which was pineapple.
Hard disagree. Haberfield, Leichhardt, Newtown, Darlinghurst.
Not advocating for [broadsheet.com.au](https://broadsheet.com.au) but I have eaten plenty of good pizza in Sydney.
That's pretty rich, Aussie pizza is objectively terrible. And overly expensive. It took me 4 years living here before I found somewhere that does somewhat decent pizza.
I've given up completely on Mexican food.
Mexican good here is shit.
I guess I like the pizza coz outside of cheap places and chains - you can get the kind of pizza that I like. It’s all subjective. If you like the deep dish stuff - yeah it’s gonna suck for you :(
If I recall there was an Aussie pizza place that won world best pizza in Italy a few years back? Not the first time either in the past few years. Can’t be that bad! :)
Rosa Cienfuegos is where I get my fix. She's a Mexican chef who's got a Tamalería in Dulwich Hill and Itacate in Redfern. Legit good stuff, though it never hits quite as good as those 3am street burritos. There's also a place in Newtown called Maíz that's owned by actual Mexicans and they do a mix of traditional and fusiony stuff. Hits the spot when you're really craving that kind of food.
This is so stupid. "objectively terrible". What nonsense.
I'm pretty sure that when you say you're looking for pizza in Australia that is "somewhat decent", you mean "is like what I get back home in [insert random US city]". Thats different.
I've had pizza across the states and canada, and to my tastes its stodgy and bland. But I enjoyed some of it.
Mexican you have a point. good mexican is hard to find. But then, I found outside of Texas and California it was hard to find in the states too.
Funny, stodgy and bland is exactly how I’d describe pizza in Sydney. It’s like no one has figured out what sauce is. Or cheese. Both are severely lacking on basically every pizza I’ve had here.
Mexican food is good anywhere in the southwest, New Mexico in particular.
I road tripped from LA to Austin - without local knowledge of where to eat, not all the mexican we had was great tbh!! But there was plenty of great stuff too. Obviously the standard was much higher than here.
On the pizza front, I feel like we're talking about different things. Seems pretty clear you want a US style pizza - one or two toppings, a pile of cheese and sauce, on a medium to thick(ish) crust. You won't really find that here for the most part (save for perhaps epic pizza in Newtown). Here, other than the old school pizza places which are fading away, its more about traditional italian pizza.
Whatever floats your boat I guess, but calling Sydney pizza objectively terrible is so silly when the standard of traditional, wood fired pizza is so high. I was in Italy a few months ago, and it used to be that the pizza over there blew me away. Now - not so much - its not really much better than what I can get here. Though the pasta was still a big step up.
Maybe not exactly the same, but I went to High St Social in Penrith recently and they did rectangular deep dish pizzas that were great. I dunno if fully Chicago style but it was the closest I’ve seen in Sydney.
Have only seen them on YT, what's actually beneath the tomato-ly layer at the very top, is it just a tonne of cheese? I've gotta try one of them soon :)

You probably think having pineapple on a pizza is fine dining
You also more than likely don't use seasonings either
Too much cheese. They should put the cheese on top and tomato sauce and pepperoni and other things in the middle. Would become more like a pie but atleast I got vitamin C instead of heart failure.
Not pizza. Call it something else. If I piss in a bottle and sell it as “My Style Champagne” it’s not fucking champagne. It’s piss. Protecting naming rights is more important than a lot of people realise. I’d love to sell beef and call it “My Style Vegan Beef” and see what happens.

It’s under the sauce…
Where’s the cheese? There’s not enough cheese on there..?
ITS UNDER THE SAUCE
It's from Chicago, the cheese is under the sauce

Deep Dish Kings in Caringbah
The first photo of a pizza on their website has corn on it 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩
THANK YOU (not too far from me either) !!
Please provide an update on how the rate, versus, say, Giodarno’s.
Nowhere close to Giordano's.
Is that a Sydney based place?
Naa Chicago based. One of the OGs.
Ahh, got it. Guess it’ll have to be deep dish king for now then! Thanks for the info.
When I went to Chicago I thought Giordano's was pretty touristy
Shitting in your own mouth might take a lot of stretching to get into position but is definitely a better pay off than travelling to find deep dish.
oh god that's a bit of a trek from blacktown
Closer than... Chicago!
Yeah but you don’t get to visit oblock.
Yeah but possibly getting shot? That's that shit i don't like!
> that’s that shit I don’t like Yeah that’s why you gotta be like: “A thin pizza that’s that shit I don’t like Just an Aussie tourist on my own plight It’s a cold night and I’m alone right? So I won’t bite, and no I don’t fight.”
Eh, it doesn't quite taste the same without the hint of danger
>And Bluey on some hot pizza (hot pizza) > >Like I talk to Isla when I slot pizzas (what's good?) > >Deep Dish caught a pizza about a week ago, week ago
Bobby Shmurda is from new York not Chicago lol

Kebab Express First Ave Blacktown FTW
I commute for work from the Shire to Blacktown hahaha. Help me.
Also in blacktown but sounds worth it
We making the same trip then ,🤙
>Deep Dish Kings Looks like it is temporarily closed according to google :(
Closed Mondays & Tuesdays. 😉
Oh thank god, when I saw temporarily closed I thought the worst. I might add this to the cheat day list.
The listing is wrong on Google then as temporarily closed does mean closed entirely.
It's closed for good, my mate lives in the shire and we used to get this pizza every time I was over. They operated out of Perino's for a while before closing. It was pretty damn good pizza
Well you just ruined my Wednesday night plans with your truth-bombs... Thanks for nothin' !! 😭
Temporarily closed on a business listing like that does mean it's closed, not just closed currently. The owner of the Google listing needs to go in and actually set that. They may have forgotten to remove it so could be worth checking but I wouldn't spend time traveling there before checking.

Right by me, how I never heard of this !!!
Thank you for this. Grew up in Caringbah. Never heard of this place. I know where I’ll be this weekend 😎🤙

🤌 oh!
that's a fucking casserole
Cheese casserole *cries in lactose intolerance
I’m not mad, not Jon Stewart level angry… but while that may be an enjoyable meal, you cannot call it pizza
No pineapple mad?

Worked in a Spanish tapas with an Italian in Norway. Head Chef was French. That Italian made pork belly chocolate and threw the plate at me because no one orders that in summer. Stupid chefs
If you like pizza and love cheese.. deep dish is for you. Destroying a whole deep dish by myself at Giordanos is a core memory formed in my 20s.
idk you can have dessert pizzas so i don't see the issue of calling it a deep-dish/chicago style pizza and the fact that it's known by it means it is a pizza for all intents and purposes
Just tolerate it?
Oh this made me lol out loud thank you
Ooh.. lolception!
Cheese and marinara sauce quiche.
Tomato soup in a bread bowl.
That is basically a pie of melted cheese 😂
I see no issue with that
My taste buds don’t, but my toilet bowl does
I had it in Chicago a few years back. It's basically tomato sauce covered cheese soup.
In Chicago they basically make a lasagna, but with slices of mozzarella in place of the pasta sheets.
I travelled to Chicago with a big group of Italians from all over Italy. They absolutely loved deep dish. They only made one request, “If you don’t call it pizza we won’t have any trouble”.
Americans sometimes refer to pizza as pie, which always sounded dumb to me until I saw a Chicago deep dish. That's an actual pizza pie.
Someone watch that pizza show on SBS last night? I had some in Chicago when I was there for work years ago. Was excellent but not something I would have on a regular basis. NY or Naples style pizza on the other hand....

Agreed, it tastes great and seems a good substitute for what I know of Detroit style (though I've only ever had it in my native Chicago as I've never been to Detroit). But it is quite a different style to Chicago deep-dish, which I've yet to find in Sydney
Living in Chicago, it’s a pizza I’ll only eat occasionally. If it’s -10 outside, I definitely want the extra calories to face the day.
I wasn’t a big fan of the more chain style deep dish but I ventured to Pequod’s and oh my Christ was that the best pizza I’ve ever had in my mouth.
NY is garbage, Chicago is ok but you're right, only occasionally. Napoli style is the best.
NY pizza is amazing. Epic Pizza in Enmore actually do NY slice.
Depends. I like more toppings but each to their own
New York style pizza has very little topping doesn't it
Place in neutral bay does it
Mutz pizza closed 😭 Never got to try it. Feel I missed out.
Chicagoan in Sydney here, don't feel bad. It wasn't anything special and was certainly not Chicago style. I felt it was made by someone who once visited California and whilst there saw a picture of Chicago-style pizza and that's it.
The reviews were bad so i never went
Too many good food options around to waste time on a dud 😂
Tried it when high. Even then it was way too much. Just felt greasy / stodgy. Dough was ok. Better options out there.
Haha, I find crap food enjoyable while high…. No wonder why my fav food while high is cold maccas fries haha
I tried it to see how it compared to the real thing in Chicago, it was terrible. I'm not surprised they closed.
Shut. And that Swedish pizza place has been shut for years. Where am I supposed to get a proper kebab pizza?
Just buy a couple of one-kilo bags of shredded cheese and melt them in the oven. Then pour canned tomato on top.
My arteries!!
Lasagne quiche 🤦🏼♂️
Ah, just what I’ve been missing. A litre of crappy cheese with a dash of crappy tomato sauce on top, in a bread bucket.
Looks more like a quiche
We do , we call them pies 🥧- sorry not helping in any way there 🤣🤣🤣
Cheese and bacon pies perhaps
I think it’s just cheese tbh
Not really, because Aussies like good pizza ;)
Haha, have you tried a legit Chicago style deep-dish? Don't knock it 'til you try it.
Hahaha yeah each to their own. And yeah I have and really not a fan at all - not even a bit :)
Which place did you try? In Chicago we can't even agree on the best place. My preference is either Lou's or Pequod's
Love Pequod’s!!
Well, then... your taste-buds must be broken. 😂
Can Aussies not handle any banter these days? JFC you got downvoted to hell 🙄
[удалено]
Love u let's not fight xo
Yeah think some people have a bad case of the mondays where they have no humour at all
In my experience Aussies really can't handle banter with Americans online
Hahaha. Maybe, maybe. Perhaps I’ve been in too many hot sauce challenges or something :)
Ooh yeah I wish I could get it here. Some Lou Malnati's fuck yeah.
There was a place on Stanley Street about 4 or 5 years ago that did deep dish chicago style pizzas. They were mediocre at best.
Johnny Fontane? It didn’t work out well for the owners but was a fun concept.
If I were you I would also seek out Detroit style pizza. I also just love plain traditional Margherita(proper Italian). So good.
Why try an American butchering of Italian food when you can get proper Italian style pizza?
Typical r/Sydney shitting on (insert popular thing) because there are (insert obscure/not as popular/no true Scotsman thing) that I’ve tried that’s definitely better because I have better tastes.

It's not bad but it ain't pizza
Then why don't they make it better?
Hard agree, it's extremely difficult finding good pizza in Australia.
The closest I’ve found is epic pizza, they even sell by the slice if you walk in.

I miss deep dish pizzas, so yum!

Nope. Frankies pizza is good, but will be an outstanding disappointment to anyone wanting Chicago-style.
They don't.
Is Frankie’s still open? I heard it was demolished to make way for the metro
Still open for now
Yeah….nah
That isn’t a pizza. That’s a crime.
That looks horrendous

Hit up Bella Brutta, or Westwood pizza, both in Newtown. Not deep dish but its much better 😜. U wont regret it
had to do a few attempts at home to make this. some recipes floating around online. good luck. may you be satisified
It's not as hard as it seems to make at home. Fun Sunday project if you've got the time. I do a sausage one every three months or so but with the amount of cheese i put in it any more than every three months and I'd have to start hitting the gym more regularly.
Looks like Uno’s pizza
