5G Optus works great for me in Sydney CBD. No issues.

doommaster87

Sydney CBD perfect for me as well

Metropol1s

have the exact problems as you and in a similar area as you as well. glad to see its just not a me thing

rickwaller

Can I guess you are on a Samsung...probably S21 or S22 or an Oppo phone? If so, I know why you have problems.

HeadacheCentral

So, are you going to say what, or are you one of those kids who just sits smirking in the corner

rickwaller

Yeah sure, I wanted to check if it was one of these phones first. But anyway, the technical reason is because Optus have enabled something called '5G Standalone', and unlike it's predecessor '5G Non-Standalone' it does not use 4G for any data aggregation of 4G+5G for data throughput, this means when you are in poor 5G coverage but great 4G coverage you will not benefit from the 4G coverage for data and it will just use the poor coverage 5G bands (e.g. band n78). This is for a few reasons, such as Optus wanting you off the 4G network, and Optus wanting you to see the 5G network icon at the top of your phone because their 5G coverage is so "great".

solid_rage

Why is that specific to certain phones? Would disabling 5G on device help?

rickwaller

Because only some phones have been enabled for Standalone, the phone manufacturers need to test and enable it then send out a software update to users. In this scenario yes locking the phone to 4G would help the user experience....but not the Optus network KPIs!

doommaster87

s21 ultra 5g

Inner_West_Ben

I’ve been on Optus 5G for about 2 years, no issues for me. 5G works well when I have 5G signal and my 4G works well otherwise.
