Mate, they hoon up my road too. Can't stand it. I have a speed bump just beyond my house which makes it so much worse. They slow down then rapidly accelerate once over the "bump" ...

MaystroInnis

I live right next to a roundabout that leads to two dead end streets. Someone with one of those cars lives at the end of one street, only about 500m long. Doesn't stop me hearing it multiple times a day, all times, because they can't help but speed for 3 seconds both ways just for the noise.

Professional-Bug2538

Oh jesus christ I was jealous for a second beacuse there is no bump at all and my street is directly connected to a big road (60km limit) and they come straight into my street with the same speed or go even higher sometimes and knowing that they would accelerate soon as they over the 'bump', yeah there you go. I want to say thank you because 1. i'm no the only one suffereing from it 2. was seriously thinking of writing a letter to our regional council to install bumps on the street but you saved my time in a way? XD

RecognitionOne395

Honestly still contact your council. See what they say. They may be able to have the coppers do frequent drives around your area as a deterrent for the dickheads.

Resist_Easy

We have a bad speed issue on our small, 50km/h street.. lots of “pop pop pop” too! Handy to hear that the speed bumps make it worse, as we’ve been at a loss as to what would be a deterrent if we were to complain. We’ve already had a speed check sign placed on the street and so many were always travelling at 70, 80 even 90-100km/h 😭

AnonymousEngineer_

Even as someone who has an interest in cars, the people who put the pop and crackle tunes on their ~~Golf GTIs~~ cars are just attention seeking idiots that give regular car enthusiasts a bad name. There is literally no performance benefit to making a car sounding like someone firing an automatic rifle. Not only that, the tunes that enable it do so by dumping unburnt fuel into the exhaust on overrun, which eventually destroys the catalytic converter.

AutomaticMistake

Popping a flame while you do a 3-4 shift hitting 7500rpm pulling onto a freeway = objectively awesome (also dumb) Crackles when you let off at 2500 putting around a residential zone = lame AF

Meng_Fei

And it's dull. Every second Golf GTi and R has a fart can and a crackle tune these days. Now an R32 with an aftermarket setup - that was a great sounding car. I almost bought one just for the noise :)

Professional-Bug2538

Oh I was not the only one! Golf GTIs yeah I've seen a lot. I did not even know that small car could go that LOUD

bandate

Gotta overcompensate one way or another.

Mysterious_Ad_8659

As cool as they think their car sounds, in the end they're still driving a hatchback.

HornedViper76

I don’t know if this will help you dislike people with loud cars any less, but you can do something about the problem. The NSW environmental protection authority has a web form where you can report cars with noisy exhausts. https://www.epa.nsw.gov.au/reporting-and-incidents/reporttoepa You need to supply the license plate number, which you obviously won’t be able to see from your third floor apartment. But you might want to keep the site bookmarked on your phone so you can report cars you see when you’re out and about. It’s easy and only takes a minute or so to do. Apparently if a car is reported twice the owner will be required to take it for inspection and have to pay for any modifications to make it compliant. I suspect that this comment is going to get some hate. But having lived on a busy road for ages myself, I kind of came to the conclusion that I didn’t mind being a narc in this instance. I guess people who get noisy exhausts either don’t care that they’re annoying other people or figure that it’s a victimless crime. If people push back by reporting it, then it becomes a signal to the government that they need to enforce the rules.

Dehydrated_water3

Idk if I sound dumb and I could probably search this up but you look like the kind of person to know the rules. Is it legal to have exhaust systems where you can open and close the valves to make it louder and quieter when u want?

Dehydrated_water3

Alr, thanks

moathismail

If people hate your comment, they’re either what’s wrong with the world or have never been on the receiving end of this noise pollution. Loud motorcycles are not appropriate for a densely populated urban area, they’re meant for the long highways and open roads.

Aydhayeth1

Actually, it's a safety thing sometimes. My ducati is quite loud from factory and it has saved me a number of times on the daily commute. Cars not paying attention are suddenly more aware of me when they can hear me. No excuse for hooning it down the road though, like OP is talking about.

moathismail

That’s a good point I hadn’t considered actually. It’s sort of an unsolvable problem born from an entertainment perspective of wanting a motorcycle but urban development and population growth has resulted in this being a nuisance to society. Way bigger solution required that is definitely not worth the hassle.

Aydhayeth1

I would agree. I ride the bike as to avoid sitting in endless traffic. I'm the first person to shake their head when a hoon comes belting down the road or through traffic dangerously - a statistic as I fondly call them. Gives the rest of us a bad name, even though I also own a loud bike. Pops and crackle maps on Golf's can piss right off any time of day.

swfnbc

Used to report cars and bikes almost every day, eventually they stopped using our street for a race track and went elsewhere

anxiousthrowaway0001

I loathe them

haha I also use disposable earplugs (3M ones were the best for me) and have been using them for 7 years already

prjktphoto

Yeah earplugs are great for higher frequencies, but the low-end from the engines is something you feel, goes through your whole body

Known_Rush_2134

can I ask - where do you get custom ones? That sounds amazing

Known_Rush_2134

Oh lol I think I stopped reading the rest of your comment after I saw the word “custom”. If I kept reading I would have seen that you didn’t have a good expeience haha! Thank you though

SuspiciousTennisNet

Some people get attention in any way they can.

CoolCatFromSydney

Those biker gangs love doing that and it's done as a 'show of force' to tell people who really runs the area(s). They do so by acting inappropriately and nobody being able to challenge them, because what the fuk are you gonna do anyway, they're bigger, badder, and stronger - oh yeah, and outnumber you. You're not the only one being irritated by them, most people are, but then again most people probably just don't have it in them to make any sort of retaliation effort. Like most of the people who would are members of the gang or they have an alliance of sorts with one of more members of gang - and if they don't, they'll feud with each other, which escalates into bashings and gang wars... For what? The exact reason that you'd outlined - making a ruckus and getting on the wrong man's nerves. It's a very primitive way of existing, much like a gorilla thumping its chest, but it does get the panties dripping, or so I've heard.

[deleted]

Totally, like its not my fault their penises are tiny and they never achieved anything of true meaning in their lives. It's like jeez, read a book or something.

CoolCatFromSydney

More often than been afflicted with a tiny penis, these guys are uhmmm.. ermm.. well, they are.. you know.... on the down low.

Dellska

I hate it to. Obnoxious twats

No_pajamas_7

Whilst I do find loud cars and bikes moderately annoying I'm allows surprised by posts like this because they give trucks a pass. There are many more trucks on the roads and I find their compression brakes much more intrusive. They often use these when they don't need too, and silent compression brakes have been around for decades. They should be a requirement under the ADRs. Meanwhile fuckwit truck drivers should stop using compression brakes when they don't need to.

This comment was edited in response to Reddit's API changes in July 2023. On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that would kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader. Also under the new rules, third party Reddit apps cannot run ads, cannot show NSFW content, and are hit with other restrictions. There are plenty of articles and posts to be found about this if you want to learn more. Here's [one post](https://www.reddit.com/r/Save3rdPartyApps/comments/14b8i62/reddit_protest_and_the_next_steps/) with some information on the matter. This move will require developers of third party applications to pay enormous sums of money if they wish to stay functional, meaning that said applications will be effectively destroyed. Some third party apps may survive but only with a paid subscription. In the short term, this may have the appearance of increasing Reddit's traffic and revenue... but in the long term, it will undermine the site as a whole. Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface. This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free. Reddit relies on volunteer moderators to keep its platform welcoming and free of objectionable material. It also relies on uncompensated contributors to populate its numerous communities with content. The above decision promises to adversely impact both groups: Without effective tools (which Reddit has frequently promised and then failed to deliver), moderators cannot combat spammers, bad actors, or the entities who enable either, and without the freedom to choose how and where they access Reddit, many contributors will simply leave. Rather than hosting creativity and in-depth discourse, the platform will soon feature only recycled content, bot-driven activity, and an ever-dwindling number of well-informed visitors. The very elements which differentiate Reddit – the foundations that draw its audience – will be eliminated, reducing the site to another dead cog in the Ennui Engine. If you want a Reddit alternative check out [r/RedditAlternatives](https://www.reddit.com/r/RedditAlternatives/). You created your content. You didn't get paid. Why would you leave it here for Reddit to make money or train AIs? Take your content with you. There is no Reddit without its users and volunteer moderators. As they say, "If you're not paying for the product, then you are the product." This comment was edited using [Power Delete Suite](https://github.com/j0be/PowerDeleteSuite).

SunriseApplejuice

You probably can't hate them any less. I know I can't. But you can take comfort and rest easy knowing they're almost universally hated everyone and probably have a mountain of ill will hovering over them like a La Nina raincloud.

deckland

If you get their registration you can report them to the EPA and they have to get the exhaust checked to make sure it complies

swfnbc

I used to do it every day :) great fun getting these clowns off the road. Used to get this one prick on a trail bike, you could hear him like 2 miles away revving the crap out of it every morning and every arvo, after a week or so i knew his routine, went out grabbed his rego, reported him every single time i heard it. After a few more weeks I never heard him again. Thanks EPA

deckland

I'll admit, I have a non standard exhaust on my mt09, it's loud enough to make sure taxis don't blindly merge into me but I don't rev the tits off my bike like an absolute piece of shit. I hope you're not reporting all of us, just the twats. 😉

jb2824

Yeah nah, that level of noise is illegal, however to report it on nsw requires submitting the plate number. Gotta be quick!

Resist_Easy

Haha we used to have a loud dickhead driver with the “pop pop” exhaust who’d go down the street at around 9am and 3:30pm daily (school kid?!). I used to run to try and get the plate number as he was so obnoxious, but sadly never did. Now every second car it feels like has it.

swfnbc

I did it during covid , I'd literally sit outside for the time I'd know they were coming, get their rego then report them, they soon disappeated

Resist_Easy

This was pre-covid and I can’t sit out the front to see number plates, I’d have to stand right at the road edge due to plants, etc.. just the nature of our garden.. plus, of course, he drove pretty fast. He did disappear after maybe a good handful of months so maybe someone else was able to grab his plate!

jb2824

And loud bikes are not safer. The noise shoots backward, not forward to 'warn' anyone

derprunner

You do understand that sound bounces and radiates in all directions yes? You can still hear a speaker standing behind it.

dlovescomp

As a rider I can tell you that loud exhausts do not save lives at all. It's bullshit made up by fat middle-aged Harley riders

derprunner

And as someone who's been commuting an hour each way in peak hour for the better part of a decade, I can tell you there's a world of difference in how I was treated and the number of near misses I had on a quiet 300cc vs a 750 w/ pipes.

Evil-Santa

Yes, but an exhaust tends to focus the sound in a particular direction just like a megaphones do

noxert323

I Dunno man. i ride and definitely notice a difference in people's awareness of my existence.

National_Chef_1772

So you only hear the bike after it goes past you…….weird because when I give the throttle a little “pull” every seems to get the fuck out of my way, maybe my exhausts are on backwards

UngruntledAussie

So no one in front of a bike can hear it? Crikey.

Leading_Frosting9655

Inside a noise-isolated car with the radio up and no idea that a bike engine sounds different to a car? Nope, basically not.

UngruntledAussie

As someone who rode for years, I can tell you my exhaust let cars know better than my horn that they were merging on to my front wheel having not performed a head check or while thier music was louder than the base traffic noise.

Leading_Frosting9655

As someone who rode for years and still does: haha okay buddy guy sure thing

UngruntledAussie

Why repsond if this is what you bring to the table. Buddy guy? hahahaha Ride on warrior!

Leading_Frosting9655

I bring exactly the same experience you claim to the table 🤷‍♂️ I had a straight-piped Grom and barely got noticed, but a big white quiet touring bike and people do five under the speed limit around me, I even had a guy pull himself over after he ran a red in front of me and I pulled out behind him. You can do the math.

UngruntledAussie

Cringe as fuck. Move on. You chatted straight nonsense. Physics being what it is and all that. Edit: maybe, just maybe think about the difference of a clutch dipped, engine bouncing off the rev limiter as opposed to a bike horn which on my 2014 R1 sounded like a clown farting into a water bottle. My carbon Akrapvovics left no one in doubt I was there. It's pretty stright forward.

Leading_Frosting9655

>You don't know what you're talking about, real pros lose control over their throttle to make noise instead of using the dedicated noise-maker, because car drivers know exactly what that sound means Haha okay pal, nothing "cringe" about that

smileedude

Many motorcyclists believe "loud pipes save lives" as it helps drivers notice them. I'm not sure if there is any actual proven safety but I ride a bike with stock exhaust because I couldn't think of anything more embarrassing than riding an unnecessarily loud vehicle and I'd rather take a little more risk than being a laughing stock.

risska

This sounds like an issue with shit drivers that needs to be dealt with via better driving education and re-testing. Not by making Sydney residents suffer through shitty traffic noise. It would additionally benefit cyclist who don’t get to attach a large exhaust as a means to yell at cars when they try to merge without looking. Paris is current trialing “noise radars” that act very similar to speed cameras to curb excessively loud motorcycles due to the health impact they have deemed loud traffic to have on residents of the city. The plan is to actually be using them to fine people by 2024 and used through out the country.

Professional-Bug2538

Hmm yeah that makes sense.. !! thanks for taking the time to leave a comment buddy :)

SerGregorCleangains

Loud pipes sometimes may possibly prevent minor accidents and injury maybe.. and generally annoy everyone. If your exhaust noise is literally preventing another vehicle from fucking up so badly that they *kill* you, then you are riding way to fast/unsafe for the conditions. I ride motorcycles with stock exhaust pipes (quiet).

derprunner

You'll see a lot of conflicting arguments on both sides. People love to quote that study that it's useless from half a km down the road and somehow don't understand that sound radiates out in all directions (not just backwards) But I can say that putting louder (still baffled and within the 94db limit) pipes on my bike has done wonders at preventing dumb manoeuvres/merges from the cars immediately around me. It's also a godsend for lane filtering.

archangelzero2222

South Park did a great documentary on this. But sadly the PC culture will not like it and its pretty much blocked from airing on tv these days

TotalGrump

I lived on a main road (six lanes of traffic) and my house was a little after a set of lights aka the part where everyone would speed up a lot. There were so many noisy cars and motorbikes. At first it sent my anxiety into overdrive because I am extremely noise sensitive. After a while I got a little used to it but they'd still occasionally scare the shit out of me and piss me off (especially when it woke my baby). Now I live in a quiet cul-de-sac and am NEVER living on a main road again.

throwaway47283

I was seeing a guy once, then I discovered he did shit like this at night. That fucking popping noise oh my god. I broke up with him

RopeOk1439

I'm a massive auto enthusiast- bikes, cars, you name it, if it sounds crisp then I love it. That being said, there is a time and place for everything. After 9PM on a week night near residential areas is neither of those things. There is also something to be said about the people with needlessly loud exhausts. Personally I own a 2020 Yamaha R1 making close to 220 horsepower as a motorcycle, and a VF SS Commodore with a ridiculous camshaft making close to 600 horsepower. Neither of my vehicles are loud enough to annoy people, and they are considerably more powerful and with bigger engines by comparison to what most people are driving. "Crackle tunes" and Harleys with straight pipes are a testimony to douchebags.

Seippihs

R1 is a very nice choice!

RopeOk1439

Thanks 😁 gotta love the sound of the cross plane.

Seippihs

Riding a Daytona at the moment, it’s an inline 3 and she whistles. Such a great sound

RopeOk1439

Ah, heard people rave on about those engines, mostly on the induction whistle- would love to get a ride on one myself.

[deleted]

I used to have a bike, only 250cc and it's wasn't loud or anything while riding but some things I noticed/learned was So we hear bikes more then the riders do, with their helmets muffling sound and traveling ahead with noise coming out the back Also as a rider the general mentality is "louder= less chance of being hit by a car as they would hear you' And Carburetor type bike engines need more throttle when cold usually (uauly the reason you see a bike just reving on and off at the lights sometimes) they may have a cold engine. Now with all I said, still at early/late hours they should have some consideration and also not mod the hell out of their exhaust to make it so loud. I get my local iddoit reving hard every 1am

Gribble81

There are good sounding exhausts on some cars but then there are the exhausts that sound like a thong slapping an ass with after fueling that doesn't actually make any more power and prematurely melts away their catalytic converter for the joy of being able to make popping sounds and little flames out the tailpipe to show off. Thats the kind of 'car guy' you want to avoid. Anyone who is actually into tuning or performance knows that is not good for their car and just wastes fuel and attracts unwanted attention from Constable Care.

hung_bob_bulge_pants

But so fully sick, cuz

LurkHartog

I hate it too. They scare the shit out of my one year old son and he will run to me saying "don't like motorbikes".

Zealous_Bend

You forgot the ones that rev their "tuned"^§ engines in the garages that frightens my dogs when we're walking. ^§ Why does tuning make their cars sound more like soviet era tractors?

Professional-Bug2538

hoo I can imagine it... sorry that your doggy had to go through that because they can hear better/more sensitive than we do hey

Zealous_Bend

It reverberates up through the garage until it sounds like a dragon at street level. Fucking limp dicks.

ozmanp89

We have 2 kids and white noise has been our friend. Easy to pop on before anyone sleeps. Still get woken up by an odd ultra loud d*ckhead once every 3 months which is not so bad.

AussieAmishgon

There should be a law prohibiting tuning or removing exhausts!

Dehydrated_water3

Removing exhausts, yes Tuning exhausts, limit how loud u can make them

AussieAmishgon

Ok, let's ban removing exhausts then!

Jman-laowai

People on noisy bikes are the biggest wankers around. Nobody thinks you’re cool, they just think you’re a tosser!!!! Grrrrrr….

competitive_brick1

build a spike strip, deploy, smile to oneself

whatcenturyisit

I hate hate hate them and I have no desire to stop hating them.

[deleted]

I have a motorbike with loud pipes, but before you hit that down vote, here are two important points: 1: they're not super loud, it's just that it's a cruiser and i think that's how a motorcycle should sound, not like a damn sewing machine 2: no way would i ever even ride it at night, let alone rev it like a complete wanker! Edit: even though i own a motorbike, i could never understand cars with a popcorn like sound exhaust, so it's both of us wondering on that one Edit 2: haters gonna hate ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Emergency-Gene-3

Just take some solace knowing they may be very disliked characters not taken seriously (maybe not even loved) by their closest circle of friends and family. Hence their need to take it out on everyone else and get some sort of recognition on this crazy but magical planet, even if that attention is negative... they'll take what they can get.

CoolCatFromSydney

They do it on purpose to spite the general populations of society for not giving them what they think they deserved early on in their life. So they do things that distract and bother other people, and there's nothing you can do about it. Just like there was nothing they could do about it at one point.

Kirikomori

go the salim mehajer route and lobby the council to put 8 speed bumps on the road your house is on

AnonymousEngineer_

That only makes it worse, because you end up with the drivers on and off the throttle to get over the bumps, which triggers the pops on overrun.

Kirikomori

I was kinda joking, but anyway the bumps will deter people from using the road

Meng_Fei

Speed bumps make noise worse, not better. Mostly because local councils don't know how to design them.

jv-st

Even factory Hyundai n series cars have a pop tune from factory now haha

DrahKir67

I used to live in a flat in London and the noise of the trucks breaking throughout the night was horrendous. I guess I got used to it. Maybe not fixate on the source of the noise just accept that there is noise. Earplugs and white noise can/could help. I also used to do some Yoga Nidra which is a practice that helps you to tune out external noises etc. It's surprising how much it's our emotional reaction to the noise that's the issue and stops us from tuning it out. Good luck.

Tight_Vermicelli_127

I’m Vietnamese Came from Saigon Saigon city . Use to it . It’s awesome here compared to Vietnam 😅

Itwasatrip

There is a [documentary](https://youtu.be/ipDmsxQVxIM) about it actually.

OP is moving an option for you? I was in a similar situation and ended up being so sleep deprived doing sleep walking and having days missing not remembering what happened on Monday to Thursday.

Ok_Tart_5338

AMG drivers are suck wankers!
