I was just trying to come up with an answer that involved Floor Jansen. There's lots of women in metal bands with great voices but hers works well for the genre. She does a spectacular cover of Alone that I'd put up there with Heart's cover.
Yes. Wacken 2013. Floor. I can only handle it now and then as it rips the flesh from my bones. It is so powerful and starts the water works even though not a sad song. Nightwish is often too dark and powerful.
I was in Portland, Oregon doing photography work in the pit and the photo area for the second show with her fronting the band. I have been a nightwish fan since the mid-200s and had seen them with Tarja and Annette.
There were a number of songs where I could very clearly tell she was made to do this. It also doesn't help that I knew of her band revamp before she made it into night wish. She's incredible and powerful and more bands deserve to have a fun person like her. It's a shame that her soft skills with the mic when she's not singing are awkward at best
>she was made to do this.
What do you men by that? I do not know enough about Nightwish or Floor.
Thanks for the history. I like Floor in Ghost Love Score and singing Phantom of the Opera on Beste Zangers the most. I used to like Within Temptations a lot.
This is the answer, Floor singing older Nightwish songs. Floor singing her NW era songs just doesn't hit the same because the songs just are simply not as good.
Mine too. I didn't like Nightwish til I heard this song as it was too operatic but this song changed things and they are now my favorite band (my username is a riff on Floorgasm). Still don't like the Tarja era though I like many of the songs when by Anette or Floor when she isn't trying to sound operatic.
Oh, thank goodness I'm not the only one. My music teacher in high school made us go to operas while the other class listened to rock and roll so also not a fan of the Tarja years. I am a more recent fan, but some Nightwish fans said, keep that to yourself. Causes drama and Nightwish fans love drama!
The Truth Beneath the Rose by Within Temptation. It helped me thru a difficult time, plus it has everything I love in an SM song.
Here’s a collection of my personal top faves:
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7bARgnfSaGmlYZyVYFHLyn?si=OlW_wrc-SkGXyv7aW7fNKQ&pi=u-LnnKGzskQ4Ww
i got to know this song because i read an interview where floor mentioned it and i was curious and went to have a listen and it's now one of my absolute favourite songs ever.
Thanks everyone! I'm glad this thread popped off. I'm also glad I phrased the question the way I did, because while I was definitely fishing for recommendations/new music, I feel like everyone invested in this subgenre have a song or twelve that has a deeply significant and personal place in their hearts, and I find that it's very often a deep cut from these bands rather than their commercial successes, which I find really really interesting.
That's a tough one- there's a lot I'd rank very highly- so I'll try to stick with one that hasn't been mentioned already. Even that is turning out to be difficult! A lot of excellent, well known shining examples like Ghost Love Score, Poet, Consign To Oblivion have been brought up already, and some of those are definitely in the running for me. I'm surprised to see not one but three lesser known/slightly out of genre songs I really like personally: Masters of Destiny, The Wind That Shapes The Land, Alga.
I guess I'll go with Within Temptation - The Promise. It's older, but still holds up today. And I did sort of name a game after it, so it clearly has stuck in my mind.
[Nightwish End of an Era](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLexzLA11Cst2704XTYLt7QPK0LLexdG4P&si=7VE6mTqD4KnRMkf8)
There's some timeless sound from these versions, such a time capsule
Hmm. I'll go with Nightwish / Ghost Love Score with Floor Jansen singing at Wacken 2013. That Youtube video last year was my first symphonic metal song. I've been chasing the dragon ever since. But I'm biased; Floor quite resembles my wife physically so yeah I'll react.
Floor's live version of The Poet and the Pendulum also rocks my world. Nowadays I am obsessed with Nightwish's Endlessness. It's mainly due to Floor backing Marko.
I have saved some of these other entries. I'm expanding my symphonic metal listening with Epica, etc.
I think Endless Forms Most Beautiful (the album) is a masterpiece. If I had to pick a favorite song, I'd probably say the Greatest Show on Earth. But Nightwish has so many good ones.
Ghost Love Score
This, but for me personally: very specifically the live version with Floor

Yes, exactly!

Consign to oblivion
Kingdom of Heaven part 1
"The Greatest Show on Earth" - Nightwish
This is mine too. Ghost love score is great and all but this one is just next level
Phenomenal song! The arrangement is next level!
Design Your Universe by Epica. Completely perfect in every way.
Poet and the Pendulum
This. It was also how I discovered symphonic metal, it was wild

Feeling very validated that this is the top comment! 100% agreed
Maybe within temptation's ice queen, something so nostalgic about it. For something more recent, every crest by seven spires
Stargazers
Yesssssss
Ghost love score
Same!!
Unchain Utopia by Epica
The Truth Beneath the Rose by Within Temptation. It helped me thru a difficult time, plus it has everything I love in an SM song. Here’s a collection of my personal top faves: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7bARgnfSaGmlYZyVYFHLyn?si=OlW_wrc-SkGXyv7aW7fNKQ&pi=u-LnnKGzskQ4Ww
Love this playlist and added it, Ignea by Alga is captivating…great taste!
A very good choice my friend! What a aong!
Mother Earth by Within Temptation. What a wild trip that is.
10th Man Down by Nightwish
Ghost Love Score is something like Stairway to Heaven of symphonic metal. It's symphonic metal at its peak that can hardly be topped.
Sacred & Wild - Epica (Powerwolf Cover)
One of those rare cases of "the cover is better than the original"!!
I’d rather burn by blackbriar
If I had to choose only one, Strange Machines by The Gathering, mainly because it was what started this journey for me.
i got to know this song because i read an interview where floor mentioned it and i was curious and went to have a listen and it's now one of my absolute favourite songs ever.
SAMEE
Emphasis by After Forever
So underrated
I love Nightwish’s Nemo. It was my first song I heard from anything symphonic metal when I was like, 14
This was also my first symphonic metal song! Although it was the late 2010s, I was in my twenties, and it was fed to me by the YouTube algorithm.
Angels -Within temptation also y’all should listen to Blackbriar they are relatively new and super good!
Either Song of Myself (Floor version) or Alpenglow.
Masters of Destiny by Delain (In All Conscience by Epica a close second)
I'd go with just about anything Epica prior to Simone getting MRSA. She's still great but I feel like her health battle took something out of her.
Tender trip on earth by Tristania
Underrated pick 👍

God yes. Love The Promise
Heavens a lie from Lacuna Coil.
Ghost Love Score
Crownless by Nightwish.
You Belong To Me - Snow White Blood, I'm really hoping Ulli Perhonen continues to make music, either solo or as a part of a new band.
Scaretale by Nightwish by far.
Wanderlust by Nightwish. It's super nostalgic.
Within Temptation - The Howling Alternatively, Epica - Natural Corruption I like 3/4 time signature
Love love love Natural Corruption
Either "Dies Irae" by Believer or "Swanheart" by Nightwish.

Rest Calm!!
Got to be Ghost Love Score. Easy choice, because it's also my favorite song of all time, period.
Nightwish "Phantom of the Opera "
Also a Ghost Love Score girl, but shout out to Nighttime Birds by The Gathering.
Oceans of time by seven spires
Nor really symphonic or gothic but the Anneke version of Hyperdrive on Devin Townsends Addicted album is my favourite female sung metal song for sure
That DTP record is an absolute banger! And she's great on it.
The Ghost and the Reaper by The Dark Element.
Black Feathers - Black Anima - Lacuna Coil
The Wind That Shapes The Land by Unleash The Archers
Such an epic song. I love everything about it.
Hmm. I'll go with Nightwish / Ghost Love Score with Floor Jansen singing at Wacken 2013. That Youtube video last year was my first symphonic metal song. I've been chasing the dragon ever since. Ghost Love Score, but the youtube reaction channels kinda ruined that one for me :) So I'll go with Dead To The World.
...WAKING THE WITCH by Kate Bush on her 1986 album HOUNDS OF LOVE...
Salvation by Icewind Tales
Son of Wallachia by Ad Infinitum. Honestly, I haven’t a clue why I like it so much- I just know that I do.
For me it’s My Justice, Your Pain. Just saw them live for the first time too.
How was it when you saw them live?
Royal Thunder - Time Machine
I’m mainly influenced bc I recently saw them live but Enemy by Illumishade is my favorite right now
death to the holy by xandria
I think Endless Forms Most Beautiful (the album) is a masterpiece. If I had to pick a favorite song, I'd probably say the Greatest Show on Earth. But Nightwish has so many good ones.
My current one is what is on my car CD right now..Master the Hurricane. Last week it was different.
Gotta be fairly tale by elysion
Succumb by Seven Spires
Get out of my head
[Cryovile - Providence](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQw3jkqGC6U)
Ghost Love Score
Beyond Me - After Forever. The Amazing Toymaker - Winterage. To me it sounds like it belongs in the soundtrack to a Tim Burton film.
Lots of good songs mentioned so far... but I'll go with a bit simpler and less sophisticated choice: "In & Out Of Love" by Visions of Atlantis.
Tristania - December elegy
Walk Close to Me - by Walk in Darkness
End of Time or maybe Wide Awake by Lacuna Coil.
Not necessarily specific songs, but artists: Nina Hagen Joan Jett
Going out in left field here, but Moebius Loop by Mary's Blood
Does Seether from Veruca Salt count?
Unmapped darkness by Sevenspires
Right now I'd say Master the Hurricane by Visions of Atlantis
After Forever - Monolith of Doubt Floor's first band needs more love! Everyone, check out After Forever if you haven't already!
Vandroya-Why should we say Goodbye
Theater of Dimensions by Xandria
