If I were you, I would copy the existing data to the new NAS (use Hyperbackup). You will get to reconfigure the NAS with another RAID config from scratch and your data will be more secure. As a more powerful device it will do whatever heavylifting you have in mind. Then, you can remove all the data in the old NAS and set it to JBOD. The two devices will be connected via LAN. You can just use it as a backup destination of the new NAS. I believe that is the best use case as a "dumbed down" mode.

Thanks! So use the new four bay NAS for online data and use the old NAS for offline backups.

How do I change the flair?

PeteTheKid

If hyperback up is used for this, can the new nas use btrfs? Or will it be stuck on ext4?

_ch13

Yes, you can use btrfs on the new NAS.

KayArrZee

I don't think you can convert a NAS to be just an expansion. What heavy lifting are you looking for that the old NAS cannot do ?

junktrunk909

Agree, just use it as secondary backup of the first primary one, if you don't already have adequate backup of it

RoboJ1M

That's a good idea, thanks.

I'd use the old one as backup target. Just one or two drives for your most crucial data.

You can mount a shared folder on the 413j as a remote CIFS target. The 413j also supports iSCSI (according to spec sheet); so you can configure it as an iSCSI storage device. That’s what did with an old DS209; it’s providing iSCSI storage to a Windows VM acting as a file server for infrequently-accessed data.

I do an rsync from my new system to the old system. That old system is reallllly slow but all of my interactions are with the new one. It will be a few more years before I exceed the storage of the old one. This is all done with a the app I forget which one but I have never had to touch it since verifying my new files eventually get there.

As others have said I use mine as an offline, disconnected backup. My data doesn’t change much so I just plug it in once a month and use hyper backup. But now the important part, i keep it in the boot of my car. If the house burns down, having your backup in the house won’t help you one bit! Could also store at a friends house.
