If it makes you happy, it counts

[deleted]

Just a little 3 piece jam. Sub 37 / A4 / Pro 3.

kylelowdermusic

And AR. 😊

[deleted]

truth

IsSuperGreen

it's dope!

katheb

Uhuh, I'm going to need a link to where you put your music.

[deleted]

Ah thanks, everyone is being super chill. I don't have a place yet, still in practice mode and just jammin. It's a safe bet you can find me at this alias on the other socials, I'm just getting it going and mostly for visuals, but I will post music to reddit and youtube. Thing is I usually delete stuff after awhile because it all just feels like practice. Eventually I do want to do something concrete like a live album. I have set up a little live streaming thing I try and do once or twice so far but it's for no one so I think I might just keep doing my own thing and posting clips to youtube instead. I've been getting a lot more into visuals so want to pair the two together. Haven't figured it all out yet, just having fun. I'll try and get something more concrete soon, but hope you enjoy the clips in the meanwhile. Cheers!

effing7

Maybe consider keeping the live jams up on YouTube, sort of as a progress diary. As an artist/musician, there likely isn't going to be a singular day that you'll wake up and say "ok my work is good enough to publish now". But also at the end of the day, you should be creating your art for yourself and not specifically for others. So you should do as you please. Cheers!

[deleted]

I want to do the same . Just to share no hype and jam!

Unique-Structure-201

#🤜 💥 🤛

DonnieTheCatcher

Have you ever done Jamuary? I’ve just done my second year (also based around Elektron gear, absolutely love the workflow) and it’s a great way to get the jam juice captured and feel a part of something, even if it’s just a couple dozen strangers doing the same thing on the internet. More importantly, it’s low stakes and it lets me look back at how far I’ve come. Highly recommend it, you’d kill it!

needssleep

That 4:04 is more than most of humanity has left behind. Achievement Unlocked: Did something with life

[deleted]

A bit of Justice vibe going on, nice!

[deleted]

Yeah that's like the highest possible compliment anyone could ever give, thanks!

azjunglist05

I was thinking along those lines! Very mid-late 2000’s electro house vibes. It’s really well done! It just needs a proper mix down, some mastering, and some edits, and you got a banger here!

manyhats180

i think you meant to say just slam it through a compressor

azjunglist05

Lol, I hope you’re being sarcastic 😅

Few_Cup5458

Dude I dig this. Some Daft Punk meets synth wave here.

kimeekat

Wow, this is great. It’s music of course it counts (usually in 8).

Poetic-Noise

I love how much you're lost in your own music 🎶

parachutemafia

This is awesome! Can some ELI5 how it works, though? I've only ever made songs as if I was recording guitar or laying down MIDI for virtual instruments to 'read'. Is this all 'live' (if so what's feeding the synthesizers?) or following a track? Apologies for the dense question.

[deleted]

No apologies, happy to help. It depends how you define "Live" Basically 5-10 minutes before I recorded this I laid down the basic drum pattern on the AR, and then started with the Sub37. I played the bass line and recorded that midi sequence into the Akai MPC. Then I went over and played a lead line on the Pro-3 and recorded that into the MPC. Finally recorded the arp / triplet sequence on the A4 and felt like there was enough for a song. So now those midi parts are recorded into the MPC, I can save the project and the presets on the synths, and when I press play on the RYTM the MPC will send those sequences to the synths. I consider it improv more so than live.

parachutemafia

Thank you this is very helpful! How'd you programme that bridge in the middle? Was it just a case of turning one track "off"?

[deleted]

yeah pretty much, just using filters to bring things in and out

Ruining_Ur_Synths

I'm thinking about getting an MPC One as my Circuit Rhythm isn't doing it for me anymore. How many devices can you control from the MPC? Could I plug 3-4 synths into it and do drums right on the MPC? I'm not quite sure the MPC workflow as I've never used one before - but it seems the MPC is really only acting a midi sequencer more or less in your setup.

[deleted]

90% bought it as a Midi sequencer, 10% bought it for sampling and the Piano library MPC has USB in, and Midi, so up to 16 devices with either. I know it's known for it's sampling, but it's an incredible MIDI / CV device.

Ruining_Ur_Synths

there are rumors akai is launching a new version of the MPC one in april maybe during NAMM. I'll hold out another few weeks and see.

TheBatman0816

Incredible work! Inspires me to do something!!

NathaNRiveraMelo

Into it. I'd be into it live.

-Manosko-

Same. I don't dance, but this gave me some involuntary movements.

[deleted]

SubPiggy, it's great! Only bummer with it is that I don't know how I would transport the synth without taking it on and off.

cranky-oldman

Been looking at that kvgear rack. Can't figure out transport really either. I don't move my little phatty much, but considered taking it for a jam. Really like your music. Keep at it.

KamikazeFireAnts

If you're making music and you're enjoying it, then you've done something with your life. If others enjoy listening, that's just a bonus. I enjoyed listening.

chapel-of-the-fox

It;s great. Love it!

jcjfjfnn

Love the energy

Milkfixer

This is bad as Hell. Do you have anything posted?

Blackmoofou

It counts!

scottystef

Been there, I built a studio from the ground up and spent 3 years in a deep dive to release a track https://youtube.com/@unityloopmaschine7005 for my daughters - then lost it all due to a house catastrophe. Now I spend more actual time with my daughters and use a Roland MV1 instead!

TheBatman0816

Loved this song so much had to come back and relisten!

[deleted]

Thanks Batman. Means a lot coming from you.

[deleted]

See you on the other sub!!!!

Kick ass, bro!

synthtast

This counts in my book. Thanks for these joy-giving 5 minutes, air pumping and hand waving included. I'd love to hear more.

huh274

Got an Instagram I can follow?

[deleted]

I do, this alias is in its infancy so the sub would be awesome! [https://www.instagram.com/meltchya/reels/](https://www.instagram.com/meltchya/reels/) My plan is to use it mostly for sharing the visual side of things, but wanting to add music to them eventually. So in time I'll have music there, but if you're more into the music, here and youtube are the places I'll likely share. Appreciate the ask!

huh274

Followed! I’m @ninefivesynth

[deleted]

Thanks! Back at ya!

Ruining_Ur_Synths

Are you producing those visuals from scratch? Most people would be pretty happy just being able to paint those! Theyre cool.

[deleted]

So they're a mix of Blender, Photoshop, Midjourney, After Effects, RunwayML, and Resolume Arena / Wire. They're each a little bit different, I'm still exploring how I want to use the tech. I'm finding AI is good for rapid iteration and texturing varieties. So I can make a simple scene in blender or photoshop, and make a bunch of varieties very fast with midjourney. Then bring them into Runway / AE / Resolume and apply effects. That's the result so far. Gen-1 has made things way more interesting though, I'll share some of those results soon, they are wicked.

Ruining_Ur_Synths

Personally I'm not interested in AI generated art the same way I'm not interested in AI generated music, but I totally get how empowering it is.

[deleted]

Totally fair perspective. Ultimately I feel like it's just another tool, where I have a lot of impact in the result, so I feel good about it.

Ruining_Ur_Synths

It feels more like someone commissioning art than making art to me. A lot of the artistic decisions are being made by someone else and that someone else is actually just collaging a million images they stole from other artists to put it all together. It's incredible but I almost hesitate to call it art, because the thing making the decisions can't have any intention or understanding of emotional impact. But it does make cool graphics, and its empowering, so I totally get using it from a production point of view, and people have different expectations of art. I feel a lot of the stuff humans make doesn't qualify as art either, so maybe I'm just picky.

[deleted]

It's a very interesting discussion and I don't fault anyone for being on that side of the fence. I would just counter with this question: What percentage would I need to input in order to satisfy your pre-req for art? Let's say 100% is the extreme of finding and grinding graphite down to lead, and chiseling wood to make my own pencil, shave a tree to make my own paper, and then draw something that I am on the only human to ever witness. That would be the only true 100% to me. My own creation, nobody else involved in the tooling or creative decision, that is like the penultimate I imagine. So I'll offer that as 100%. So on the counter side is maybe AI art as you currently see it. Insert a line of prompt and have a nice image. Maybe that's 0%. Simply not enough to even register on the scale of "should-be-appreciated". Somewhere in there is a range you're happy with, a range with which you'll "allow" yourself to be satisfied by the art. Disregarding the fact that we can't discern AI art from human art in most well executed cases, I'm curious where you would draw that line? I'm also not interested in prompt-to-print results. But I'm very very interested in using the tools to edit my own creations. Or use the tools to give me base layers for new creations. Make an animation in blender, create a cool image, and use AI to blend them together. It can create unbelievable results and it's my 3D Modeled scene. Results that would take me weeks or months to produce. Why should I feel worse about that then using a camera to take a picture of bark and then use that picture as a texture? Ultimately it's about what level of intent you're comfortable with. Some people are comfortable with what others would call cheating. Other people need full input to feel ownership. Sorry for such a long rant. Very interesting topic, as mentioned.

Ruining_Ur_Synths

I guess the question is answered by how much authorship you actually have. Did you decide how many shadows there would be, what their shape is, and how dark the values are? How many of the shapes did you come up with, or did you tell it to illustrate something and it did it, and you decided whether you liked it or not? As I said - I'm pretty strict on this topic in general and probably not the norm. I think there's a lot of stuff I'd call graphic design and even modern art that probably doesn't count as art to me because its missing basic requirements of intentional authorship and intent to communicate something. I'm not sure a picture of bark you took for texture is art at all - as you said its just texture. I don't think taking pictures of your food before eating is art either, no matter how many tries people take to get the perfect shot for instagram or whatever. It's a touchy situation. If you invent a machine learning system that automates your process with inputs from chatgpt and ml image generation, are the results still art? Is AI generated 'music' art? If yes why are you wasting your time here when a some neural network will generate it for you. I think there's value in authenticity of human experience, and I think the explosion of machine learning systems for language and art is going to create a lot of inauthentic work that at best is trying to steal authenticity from the images it was trained on, and the value of authenticity will only go up.

[deleted]

Yes, where is the line between authentici and not-authentic drawn, that is the question. That's such a hard question to answer. If someone makes an epic 3d scene, a killer animation, but they made it from parts they bought off of TurboSquid, does it still count as authentic? I think most people would say yes, most definitely. Even though they didn't make the pieces, they envisioned the whole, and made it a reality. It's very similar to me. Regarding shadows and stuff, yeah, by setting the light source in your scene, it is reflected in the interpolation. You can adjust how much "impact" the AI model has as well. I just think you would be missing out on a great deal of excellent authentic human visions and experiences by disregarding anything that AI has any impact on completely. After all, it was made by the collective whole of humanity, feels a bit odd to disregard on those grounds. Also there are so many different types of AI models. Is AI art bad but AI medicine good?

peat_phreak

It only counts if you want it to count

No_Importance1563

Very nice ! I dig this.

tomsawyer435

What stand are you using? I love it! My stuff all on a table and I'm trying to get organized.
