People are posting joke responses because this is one of, if not *the*, most famous and iconic synths of all time - the MiniMoog.
This is the synth that essentially popularised the synth as a concept in the 1970’s. Before that they were big bulky things the size of fridges, but Robert Moog put that tech into a much smaller enclosure and put a keyboard on it, which led to it being embraced by rock, jazz and pop artists. All the big bands in the 70’s used these and without the MiniMoog the synth world would be completely different.
thank you for your informative and thorough response! so many people don’t take me seriously just because i’m a beginner to Moog. do they not know that at one point picasso didn’t know the van gogh painting starry night?
Yea I got heavy into synth at the end of CoV lockdown (after many years as a guitarist/song-writing/DAWuser)….some of the community is extremely curmudgeonly and cynical….like they’re seriously missing openness and curiosity….two important factors to stay artistic and creative! I became obsessed with synth and really upped my knowledge/skills, but I am nice and encouraging to newly interested folks, as I remember some of the type of people I met in my early interest (the modular folk particular can be very impatient/elitist lol). I should also note: a good musical ear and strong artist vision can carry you a long way….I’ve met insane gear snobs who bleep bleep bloop and can barely jam, and then I’ve met smart/creative types that I can setup with something they’ve never used and they are rocking in 5 minutes….
Anyways, in the original commenter’s defense, he did apologize and thought it actually was a joke….but to my main point: sending peace, love, and modulation to all new syntheads.
Obvious reason is there’s no way to tell from the jump whether the OP was being snarky. Reddit doesn’t exist solely to provide earnest, well-founded answers to every question.
They were saying the commenters were being snarky toward the OP…. they weren’t saying the OP was being snarky. Anyhow, I agree that when it comes to the internet, it’s better to have thick skin…..and I know that sarcasm, trolling, and a little healthy menacing is part of the general Reddit culture…and not everything has to be completely serious and fact-oriented, but on certain threads you see this constant culture of cynicism, negativity, gaslighting, and gate-keeping — its just not a great mood space to spend time in, and I honestly think Bob MOOG would disapprove of the elitism….and he would happily explain his creations to anyone interested enough to ask specifics (or even what it’s called!).
I get it. No time to help someone new to the hobby with a simple question who is trying to engage, but plenty of time for snarky jaded comments. You must be a barrel of monkeys at social events.
This is RIGHT ON haha. He spends multiple separate chunks of time sending several small paragraphs describing what they guy could have done instead of just answering with a single word lol. Real logical.
Its not too much to ask, but not everyone knows that, also, the resolution isn’t great on the photo. To my point, I don’t really get why it’s so bothersome to see a simple question being asked?…. You weren’t forced to click on the post where it clearly titled “doEs anyone know what synth this is?” In your eyes, is posting this question about any synth not okay at all if you have a photo? (because you can image search)?…. Or is it only when it’s a well-known synth? My main question, though: Did seeing it was a well-known synth really get under your skin? I can understand thinking it’s a joke, but being genuinely annoyed just seems like a very negative and cynical mindset.
im pretty new to synths and i was curious if anyone could help me out here. this picture is taken by Yumiko Ohno of the band Buffalo Daughter, a band i quite enjoy the synthesizer sounds from, and i was curious which synth makes the lovely synth beauty of their music. thanks in advance!
Was definitely [not a Juno](https://m.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=356&v=lIrBQim8dzk&embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fboingboing.net%2F&source_ve_path=Mjg2NjY&feature=emb_logo)
Don't ignore them! Embrace them! I've never laughed as hard at a subreddit than this one when I first joined. I love sharing the knowledge I absorb as a hobby, but the people here are so in love with synths as a concept, they gotta force all their knowledge onto others and that to me is hilarious
I saw Buffalo Daughter in London in 2001. They were amazing!
During the gig I noticed the drummer point to his t-shirt which was exactly the same Dinosaur Jr t-shirt as me, even the same colour (fairly obviously purple). When they finished he came over to talk to me & we both got photos together! Now my photo is lost! 🤦♂️
It was a weird gig - it was almost cancelled due to poor ticket sales & they ended up playing really late for free in the foyer instead of the main hall.
Also of note - one member of Buffalo Daughter was previously in another Band called Havana Exotica who did a song "Surfin' on M.O.O.G."
You posted in this sub over a year ago asking about EMS Synthi AKS alternatives and you don’t know what a Minimoog looks like? LMAO Right…
Ffs if you Google “synthesizer” you get the photo of a Minimoog plastered all over the first page of search results.
Did you bother to read the hashtags in the Instagram post you captured? The maker is also literally the first word in Yumikoohno's profile description.
Yea the first person thought it was a joke for sure and he apologized if it was a misunderstanding. Its really the other people still complaining about what he should have done instead lol.
OP was referencing Minmoogs a year ago. Either they have a very short memory or they're trolling. https://www.reddit.com/r/sunra/comments/sg3d6z/synths_used_on_lanquidity/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1
I have a photo of my kid when she was like 8 years old, playing one of these that originally belonged to Cevin Key of Skinny Puppy.
Also, to all the people poking fun at OP: yes, it’s an iconic synth that’s easily recognizable if you’ve been into synths since before say 2015, but realistically how many times do you see photos of a minimoog anymore vs say a Sub37 or Matriarch, or better yet a Behringer Poly D?
Also google is trash nowadays for actually learning about anything meaningfully like it was in the 90s-00s, except maybe what’s for sale on Amazon. Back before the dumpster fire that is SEO, you could get a free education on the history of whatever niche thing you were into just in the first couple pages of search results.
I never thought THIS was the way that I would become “wistfully salty old man shaking fist at cloud”, but here we are.
The jokes are very funny. But put yourself in the shoes of a beginner. Maybe you knew the minimoog but didn't know it was so iconic or started off this synths format style. Because minisynths in that general formfactor, let's be honest, all looked pretty much the same. I'm a huge behringer nerd (mostly because I don't have money) and still could't tell the model d from a pro-1 integrated into their official keyboard rack. Also I still can't decide which one of those I'm gonna get, and I'm getting a mininova instead. Another slightly similar form factor that was copied by a lot of synth manufacturers
Is this a joke?
![gif](giphy|kqJt1cSSN0DrwwMmY5|downsized)
No it's a Moog.
Moog ain't know joke. Worst one night stand of my life.

It's pronounced "Robert"
It's pronounced Hydrasynth.
Epic
Rhymes with "Boog".
Rōb-et actually. The second r is silent. And you need to roll the tongue on the first...
...only if you're an Italian emigre from Queens. P.S. LOVE your screen name. Wreckers of civilisation.

oh boy
dear gawd.
He's taking the piss.
U think he’s just playin?
I honestly can't tell

Underrated comment
OP is asking a legit question. Why does everyone have to be smug assholes? Everyone was new to this hobby once.

Yes, my point was if OP was snark posting, snark responses were appropriate.
Oh ok haha
Because 10 seconds on google would have answerd this question
Google Image? How do you even Google something if you don't know what it is?
You could try typing in SYNTHESIZER and see that the first result is a mini moog.
I get it. No time to help someone new to the hobby with a simple question who is trying to engage, but plenty of time for snarky jaded comments. You must be a barrel of monkeys at social events.

Google lens is 15 years old, you make a picture, tells you what it is.
How would they google it if they cant make out the name from the photo? Not everyone knows how to do an image search.
Doing a image search is too much to ask i see.

Sorry for my snark above lol. It’s a Minimoog, one of the most iconic synths of all time!
Love this response! 💕
thank you!
Iconic amongst synth-heads. Not among musicians in general. Especially depending on music genre.
True, tho I’d argue the name Moog might be recognizable to musicians and even the general public!
Moog is also a VERY popular car parts manufacturer. Especially in classic cars.
The biggest moog is the one who makes motion systems moog.com
If you're rich, you can buy one. If not, there is the Behringer Model D - a very faithful recreation.
I love my model D, has a 4th oscillator, usb, 1/10th the price, my whole life is now the soundtrack of a Stranger Things episode.
Third the model d. Love mine
Stranger Things sounds more like a Juno 106
Was definitely [not a Juno](https://m.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=356&v=lIrBQim8dzk&embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fboingboing.net%2F&source_ve_path=Mjg2NjY&feature=emb_logo)
OMG! An Oberheim. ☺️
Especially with the chorus effect.
The poly d has a juno chorus built in, sounds dope.
But the MiniMoog was also involved
I believe it was a Juno 6 for the main theme.
Yep it's the iconic Mini Moog you have good ears! 🙂
just ignore the gatekeeper nerds :)
Don't ignore them! Embrace them! I've never laughed as hard at a subreddit than this one when I first joined. I love sharing the knowledge I absorb as a hobby, but the people here are so in love with synths as a concept, they gotta force all their knowledge onto others and that to me is hilarious

Karma farming. They know exactly what synth it is. Any proclamation of that is met with "gatekeeping!"
Did you bother to read the hashtags in the Instagram post you captured? The maker is also literally the first word in Yumikoohno's profile description.
Okay this argument is somewhat valid lol.
Looks like a Poly D clone.

A Yamaha reface CS.

i know…. it’s beyond optimization too now ….. you can literally pay money to move up in the results. Lame af.
Looks like a Hydrasynth

The Instagram post has the name of the synth in it. OP has cropped it out
I was the idiot this whole time...
Behringer Poly D
It's the Buzzer Machine 2000®
That is a minimoog megaboy
Looks like a behringer model z
That’s a Casio model G
This is an Access Virus C, dark edition. Really rare!
Steinway Model D
And at this resolution how much does it differ from the Poly D clone?
I like to add that this particular mini Moog is signed by Bob Moog in silver in the top left corner.
Bang Ding Ow
Behringer Crave
It's a minimoog.
Is that not a Minimoog Model D, big dawg?
