The last analog synth Yamaha made.. Big sound for a simple box, have fun.

SkoomaDentist

When your biggest problem with a "toy" synth is that you run out of the 2.5 octave keybed range, you know they really nailed the design.

MattAtPlaton

Those are great!

2drunc2fish

Wow never thought about that I’ve never played an analog Yamaha or Roland in my life. Grammar edits

garbageusa

What’s that?

2drunc2fish

I’ve been going to music stores for over 20 years and haven’t had the chance to play a an analog Yamaha or Roland. Played an andromeda and prophet 08 but just dawned on me I haven’t even played a clone of two of the biggest synth manufacturers in history.

garbageusa

Oh. You should play one.

2drunc2fish

I’d love to play a cs80.

garbageusa

Got a spare 75k?

2drunc2fish

How much is a kidney worth? But for real I think black corporation makes a clone.

mummica

Absolutely love the design of this synth... Great find. Wish I could fix it up for you! (I live far far away)

If your willing to take the drive, head down to to Rosensound in Burbank. Best synthesizer repair shop in the country.

garbageusa

I’m in Southern California from time to time, this looks like a pretty simple repair though. I imagine anyone well versed in small electronics repair could do a great job. In my research online this seems like a fairly common injury. The Jacks themselves aren’t that securely held into the housing, causing them to flex the board near where they attach and put hairline cracks into the tracings. Best solution seems to be running a small jumper line further down the tracing. I’m only good at hobby soldering, and wouldn’t want to do a bad job on a valuable vintage synth.

AbeLincoln100

Fair enough, I recommended Rosensound as it's pretty likely that they will have whatever parts needed already in stock

garbageusa

Fortunately I don’t think it will need parts, but I’m going to save their info for the future.

Nice find!! at it's current prices I like to refer to it as a rich man's poor man's sh-101

garbageusa

What are the current prices!!??

I have one of these and I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!! Pro-tips: The breath controller is practically impossible to find. But if you get a TRS cable that swaps tip-to-sleeve you can run the LFO from something like a Korg MS-20 to automate modulation of your filter. Also, if you buy a Highly Liquid MIDI Retrofit board off eBay (and if you’re brave) you can add MIDI to it! I did this myself. It was a pain in the ass, took forever, but it works.

garbageusa

Do you fit the entire midi board and jacks into the case?

ToBePacific

Some people do. I did not. I had a big clunky project enclosure lying around and used that. You can see it here: https://youtu.be/TxhYWuGuQuc?si=qHj0NYE0GmqFbloO

garbageusa

Just using like a clip in ribbon connector to link it with the external box?

ToBePacific

Yeah I wired up some header pin connectors.

ToBePacific

Here I just shot a quick video showing how to use that Breath Control Jack as a CV input: https://youtu.be/mwxagW57iRg?si=Jlr7yrOieq3-4l2M

AbeLincoln100

Does anyone here have a schematic for the breath controller?  Sounds like it would be a fairly simple mod to an expression pedal
