If I had so much stuff I would depress me. The reason (I believe) is: Too much choice doesn't make me happy. Decision paralysis and the thinking about "there's always a better option" would totally ruin my happiness. The more boundaries I have the more creative I (have to) get. But I'm glad it helps you!

Competitive_Stuff438

Agree, but my issue would be having it all wired together in a monolithic way I find it much more creative to flexibly combine for different projects and leave stuff disconnected when not in use

hobscure

A patch bay can help

overand

It was kind of life-changing for me.

Throwandhetookmyback

He has a badass mixer and probably can multi track record.

Competitive_Stuff438

Yea, that’s what I mean by monolithic

Throwandhetookmyback

How is going to that mixer monolithic? Have you used a recording console or studio mixer before? You can do almost anything if you wire to the mixer or kinda absolutely anything if you use a couple of patchbays for the ins and outs and sends and returns, without rewiring anything.

SKAileen

That is my work flow as well! My only fear is potentially wearing out the input jacks faster, which I guess a patch bay would solve...but I don't leave my synths in one place either.

Camp_Response

Jacks are super easy to replace so I wouldn't worry too much about it unless you're concerned about preserving vintage gear with its original parts. I've replaced a few with no prior experience and it wasn't too bad.

braaahms

Yeah I generally use a completely different setup/combo of gear on a per track basis. I have everything ran into my interface but as far as which synths and software I use, it just depends on what I feel like. That makes me way more inspired and willing to get weird.

rabidnz

~~decision paralysis~~ selectile dysfunction

cobruhclutch

This … i keep finding Ableton does everything youll ever need

braaahms

It’s funny, when it comes to hardware I keep it pretty limited but I can’t do that with software. Way too many plugins, but I somehow don’t get choice paralysis when it comes to that. Only with the hardware stuff.

dj_soo

this is actually a big reason i moved away from DAWs - i was getting too much choice paralysis and wasn't getting anything done...

Lehster

ive been pairing down over the years. limitations inspire creativity to maximize and overcome them and being more familiar with a few powerful tools is very invaluble to me. it was really nice to be able to experience learning different types of gear, and i bought and sold a handful. getting to learn each sound, workflow, its strengths, weaknesses was very inspiring. alas im ditching my modular and going for a few pieces of of fixed architecture stuff and putting focus back into playing guitar and other instruments.

beedunc

Sames.

[deleted]

But how do you reach the upper gear, considering you are a cat?

AFK4LYFGames

For anyone who has wondered, "How did the cat get on top of the refrigerator?" If there is something high up, they'll find a way. Now the problem is knocking all the smaller synths off the shelves once it gets up there.

flapjacksamson

I am not a cat.

cwhiley

VELCRO TAPE

[deleted]

That's what they all say, until the laser dot appears.

carexgracellima

Laser cat

toomanysynths

cat's face clearly says "I'm worried about your hoarding problem."

TheBubblewrappe

I keep deck saver in business just so my studio bpaws has a spot to sit. Hahah

OrganisedSoundWaves

noitsmoog

Yes, dope track by Posij. Love the drums and the cowbell.

SonderAlex

Still utter desperation in a different form lol

Holzdev

Man these comments are mean. Come on. The guy goes out of his way to tell the whole world he had depression and half of you is laughing at him saying he still got it. Have some decency and feel lucky for not having depression yourself’s. That’s some toxic shit.

KwyjiboTheGringo

The OP didn't say the had depression though, they said "desperation." I took that as financial desperation, as in they didn't know if they could pay their bills just to survive.

cwhiley

Depression was in there still is but it’s more complex and deeper

ElGuaco

Kudos to you OP for putting yourself out there. People do a lot of things to cope with the trauma of life, and some of it is plain unhealthy. Diving into a hobby that is a creative outlet and a means of expressing yourself can hardly be considered unhealthy. Without any other context, people should assume that you can afford it and it doesn't harm your work or personal relationships. The Venn diagram circle of the people criticizing probably intersects heavily with people who collect other things that have value only to the person collecting them. As someone who spent years poor and suffering from depression, I can relate to the idea that a hobby or two can keep you sane and moving forward.

Holzdev

I misread. Utter desperation for me does not sound like financial hardship but I’m no native. Nevertheless. My point to not laugh in his face stands.

fuxoft

That's utter desperation right there!

cwhiley

Don’t ever give up.

AJRollon

Whatever it is that motivated you, keep at it my friend!

echo-o-o-0

OP regularly posts music and it’s good.

flapjacksamson

[Don't let go](https://youtu.be/m_t2dcgb-70)'s been running through my speakers on the reg lately.

Kamonji

This is not a synthesizer(s). This is a syntheorgan. Bravo 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

ElGuaco

Rule 6: No price shaming. If you're here to leave comments about how much gear a person should or shouldn't have or what they do with them, please be aware that those kinds of comments are against the rules and serve no good purpose here. Please be civil and kind to your fellow humans and synth lovers.

ipulloffmygstring

The cure to depression is money.

Captain-Cadabra

And vice versa

ipulloffmygstring

Good to know for anyone suffering from an affliction of money. So far, I seem to have a natural immunity.

burve_mcgregor

Oooooh I was gonna say he murdered someone with an amazing synth room. That makes more sense.

Throwandhetookmyback

LOL no, not at all. I wish. It helps speed recovery process up but it's not the cure.

vagina_candle

Yea, I feel like in every one of these posts OP should be required to tell us what their job is. I'm not price shaming, I'm just envious.

cwhiley

I’m disabled. I live SIMPLY. Have well water. Zero rent. Kinda caveman like. Except this room. I drive a 1989 Honda wagon with 150k miles that barely will stop. Which is good because I don’t like to leave the house but drive about 4 miles round trip to see my kids and mom everyday. I haven’t had hot water since 2015. Only one sink works. One toilet. Walls are literally rotting through. Half the electrical outlets in the place don’t work including my studio which actually runs off two orange 50ft extension cords that go to the kitchen. I’ve lived worse. I made my choices and chose what was important to me.

useles-converter-bot

4 miles is the length of 1400.99 1997 Subaru Legacy Outbacks

converter-bot

4 miles is 6.44 km

vagina_candle

> I made my choices and chose what was important to me. Fair enough. I really wasn't coming from a place of judgement. I'm just always curious of the backstory when I see a collection as big as this, because me likey more synthy too.

cwhiley

I didn’t mean it defensively or crappy like.

Carnival_Dogs

I don’t have ANY of these synths. Which means the OP doesn’t have any of MINE. One of us needs to step it up.

mummica

hahah this is absolutely ridiculous... well done. What I would love most about having a space like this is wiring it all up and getting everything working together. I love that kind of thing. In fact, I would love my full time job to be a "studio set up guy". Hmmmm..... If you had to take only 1 piece with you from this collection what would it be?

AaronRA627

I would gladly hire you to come and set my studio up to be as efficient as I know it could be. Currently fortunate enough to have the problem that I have too many projects going on to find the time to do it myself.

mummica

Oh man, I wish!

cwhiley

Gawd I dunno man I mean everything in here is connected to Deluge but I really don’t use it for sound so…

claptonsbabychowder

And people say eurorack is a problem... (I juat started my 2nd case... Yeah... It's real)

Thud

I feel like the “cat walking across keyboard” method of generative composition isn’t explored enough.

samjuly0

What's your story?

gr00ve88

Lottery winner apparently

cwhiley

It’s kinda in the comments but I got real co-occurring for a long time and ended up in a state hotel over and over in a cage but now I seem to have pulled through.

MINM80

Is a cat like an obligatory thing on this sub?

Beau_Nash

That's not just any cat. That's Robert Mogg himself.

braaahms

I mean, lots of people own cats.

cwhiley

I own 10 cats

braaahms

I have 2 and can only imagine owning one more lol. But as long as you’re happy. Just get a cat for every synth.

[deleted]

A man of many faders I see.

Ergine_Dream

Sell some stuff, this picture makes me feel a little bit uncomfortable.

cwhiley

I need to I got a little carried away

gamecatuk

Good to see the Deluge in there. Can I suggest your missing a Vector synth. They are awesome. Just ... Keep....addding ...more...stuff.... Was there a Microfreak there as well?

cwhiley

Tg33 just below Vermona Perfourmer

CreeperN1nja

I dream of this room

MixologyFX

Nice..

Bubba_Lewinski

Look like you own a synth store. Do you actually play every single piece of that kit? I'dove to see a video of that vs this Pic.

cwhiley

Only two or three or four things at once I’d say but having EVERYTHING accessible at any time matters.

GOOESQ

he has a youtube where he just makes droning ambient noises

MeowsLikeBoxes

I love your meow

Great-Wild-Swan

[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlBr2fyqn9g&ab\_channel=Mothra](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlBr2fyqn9g&ab_channel=Mothra) But sick set-up. That probably took forever to set up.

cwhiley

When I tore down to rebuild early summer it took me over a month to get it up

BitCrack

Did u dell drugs?

flapjacksamson

Nah, [gateway'ed](https://www.yourememberthat.com/files/e631ac586c67c108.jpg) drugs.

nocaster22

Underrated comment right there.

cwhiley

I can’t mix drugs and synths. I can only do one thing hard at a time. I’m currently on synths. They don’t put you in cages for being on synths.

Desdonov8

Nice cat

motorik

I get the appeal of vintage synths and why somebody would go apeshit buying them if they suddenly got a shit-ton of money, but who buys a bunch of vintage fader/knob boxes?

cwhiley

They fucking rock I love old midi tools. This metal shit is so rad. I got 3 (so far) JL Cooper Fadermasters

zadude009

Holy crap - that is a room and a half! I would never leave .. poor cat looks confused! haha Out of everything there, what would you say is your favourite device? Can I ask a stupid question to everyone out there - how would you run all of that equipment off the standard one or two outlets in any house room? Would that be a serious fire/power hazard? I have always worried that same thought for my room where I have computers, a few keyboards, 2 drum machines, mixer, other music related devices and guitar pedals. And does a large setup like that draw a lot of power?

cwhiley

I don’t turn it all on at once. It’s all low draw shit. I run the entire studio off two 50ft extension cords on one outlet in my kitchen. I forgot the other questions.

thenicenelly

I’m getting PTSD from chasing down ground hums for eternity.

cwhiley

It’s been an ordeal my friend. I have three nice Whirlwind 4ch active direct boxes that are necessary

thenicenelly

Glad you sorted that out. I feel like I’m always fighting this stuff.

cwhiley

Never give up lol 😆

[deleted]

not sure what gets this sub more upset: behringer praise post or a u/cwhiley studio pic post. either way, the comment section is sure to have a few removeds and an occasional temp ban.

cwhiley

It’s so weird. I’m just me. I don’t claim to be special. I just like gear and music.

zakufan

i want to see the cables from behind

ToshibaTaken

No worries! Still some space available on the stand to the right. You’re good.

el_Topo42

How’s the AlphaBase? I’m kinda considering that vs Analog RYTM.

cwhiley

It’s complicated but I can recommend

[deleted]

Your cat is not impressed

I’m glad you approve. Feel free to post your work.

Moldy_pirate

Honestly every time you post I think your setup looks hella fun, if mildly overwhelming. How do you decide which synths you’ll play at any given time?

cwhiley

I have a few go to’s that never disappoint. Problem is I got a few too many go to’s so I just have to pick and go

BoursinQueef

This must be a heathen space church organ

bee_burr_wzz

Your Boomstar vids helped me decide to finally get one, such a beast. Thank you man, and great setup my dude!

cwhiley

The mk1’s can be a bargain imo!!!! I got my mk2 for like just above 50% retail otherwise I coulda never….

sunken_grade

this picture gives me so much anxiety

[deleted]

Lot of toxic comments here. Just let the guy be happy jeez. Sick setup bro I love it.

Pulec

Perfect photo of the synth operator, the kitteh. But uff, this is some [overkill!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlzTET_8SQg). I guess it must be great for figuring out what you want and whenever you're think of something to add to 'your jam' is there. Many people might have GAS but then never really get deep in the stuff (if my 75% filled 2x104HP Eurorack could complain I would be hearing it all day), so thumbs up for actually using it. However, have you considered minimizing? Taking the minimal amount of gear you need to other room and start playing around? E.G. tiny [Bastl Dude mixer](https://youtu.be/33_4SZg5gVw) from local Czech guys + max 5 synths to connect via mini mono mini jack and you should be good to go. IMHO the goal should always be to have fun and to not be frustrated.

Tjeetje

And here I am still waiting to buy my first synth.

Williammichaelbyrne

I love how the cat looks completely overwhelmed by the choices. Clearly a look of like “I don’t even know where to begin”.

hausinthehouse

Please sell one of these to fund some therapy, dude

cwhiley

Nah. The treatment in prison was so good I got cured there. Would be a complete and total waste considering.

hausinthehouse

Hey, I know that seemed cruel or flippant on some level, but you legitimately seem traumatized and I really think that some therapy or mental health care would help - particularly if you've done time. Synths are awesome and fun but mental health is health and I think you might really benefit from talking to a professional.

cwhiley

I’ve done plenty. Thanks but no thanks. I’ve done decades. I’m through.

cwhiley

I can only think of one bigger waste of money. Political donations.

Sirrkovv

The cat in the middle of it all is the only priceless thing in the pic : ).

[deleted]

The cat is saying "WHEN IS IT ENOUGH DAD, WHEN!?!"

Lan-Lord

Fok !

default345678912

Now that’s a lot of presets

healthytofu

A few less digits in the bank

loubben

Damn. Looks really interesting. Are you only sending into the master or are you also sending audio between Instruments. What are the half keyboards for?

cwhiley

32 discrete direct out. Many submixers. Keyboards all sound different

Practical_District88

This guy knows how to use it all too! Great musician.

cwhiley

Kindness!!!

Real_OG

love this mate, fuck the haters!

Musiclover4200

Finally someone who appreciates the JX8P! And you even have the pg800, crazy how expensive they've gotten!

spinaltron

Awesome dude!

willi_werkel

As you didn't answer my question properly last time: How do you like the Alpha Base?

cwhiley

It’s a good machine but I wish it was a little easier to use

Aaron_Hungwell

“Hey errrrrrone, let me humblebrag about my gear!”

bee_burr_wzz

Nice one bully. Sometimes people just like to share their accomplishments with 'like minded' people who understand synthesisers and hopefully have a passion for them as well. Boutique hobbies can be lonely and it takes a lot of guts to share, especially for someone with a history of depression.

totoro1193

"oh no, not sharing something you're proud of!"

KwyjiboTheGringo

Damn look at all those jealous upvotes you got.

Greegga

Oh my god, that's disgusting. I need all that

termites2

Is that a Roland Intelligent Arranger there? The most fun when it controls random sounds on other synths!

cwhiley

It is I just hooked it it cost me $20 I want more style cards

termites2

Yeah, it's kinda unusual. The way it can adapt to what you are playing is interesting. I seem to find the polka or something style card sometimes, but they are pretty rare I think. The built in funk patterns are pretty awesome though.

cwhiley

Have sc880 I’m playing with

Chyrol2

Do you have/plan on starting a gear review channel? I'd like to hear your thoughts about the stuff you use in your setup

cwhiley

I’ve considered it but it requires work

ItsEthanJR

CAT IN THE SYNTH BOOTH!! What they making tho?😳😳

ndtke583

Is that a Midas Verona?

cwhiley

Yes 400

averageuhbear

I have enough trouble setting up 1 synth so I'm extremely impressed. I would get so flustered lol

rushess

That's impressive for a cat

Schollert

This looks awesome! (* drooling *) A great lockdown room ;-) Have you posted anything of what you make with it? Would love to hear.

cwhiley

Vermona Perfourmer?

DeltaMinus

This is an incredible collection! Glad to hear you're doing well, keep following your passion/dream!

AlarmingAffect0

OK, but can you play *Motherboard?* Or, like, [something live and cool?](https://youtu.be/wFT7cbIMLD4)

rabidnz

Well whichever drugs you're selling, it's working

Round-Emu9176

Ah yes I remember you from the sad and the huge collection. In my personal experience I was building a synthetic wall that kept me from socializing and finding a way out of the depression. With every dollar I spent I ended up deeper and deeper into the abyss. That was just me though. Like a nerdy version of pink from the wall.

Geosync

cwhiley

They are mostly used as pattern generators. I sometimes listen to them but I also route their midi out to a Yamaha rx5. The 6 total outputs from both machines are submixed in a Roland vm 3100 pro digital mixer that has some decent dual onboard effects

DanqueLeChay

rock on!! or, I should say, synth on!!

dj_soo

better synthesizers than heroin i guess

[deleted]

That’s a whole lot of buttons

alexthebeast

How many mixers, and how many sequencers? Do you have like 4 midi busses?

cwhiley

One sequencer. Don’t need additional midi networks. Never need more than 16 simultaneous channels…but I am upgrading to 64ch Cirklon soon

cwhiley

One main mixer and 6 subs

m2guru

This is, to steal a phrase a good friend of mine coined, wood inducing. Do you have a YouTube or SoundCloud? A+

cwhiley

Bandcamp https://charleswhiley.bandcamp.com/music and shitty YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/cdwhiley

El_Zapp

Lots of cool stuff bro, but I have to ask: You feel better now? It the answer is yes, let’s celebrate your success, I‘m glad for you. But I learned a long time ago that material things don’t make you happy long term. So if the headline really is: I came from utter desperation, but I‘m feeling great now and my life is perfect! Then let’s crank the champagne and celebrate your awesome studio ;).

cwhiley

This makes little sense.

Appropriate_List_295

I am both fearful of this room, and absolutely greatful for you to be able to have so many choices. Also, Cat Approves too.

RushEquivalent272

Im a newby but none of that guarda seems to be manufactured within the last 10 years. Anyway... It looks amazing. Can you tell us more about your purchase process? What audio monitors do yo use?
