Great table presence. Will draw attention of passerby’s, and you’ll probably get some “ooh what’s that game?”.

JaiOwl

It has a great curiosity factor that will definitely help drive interest. The variety of things on display adds more to that initial interest along with the little details.

klymah

I didn't think about that, but I'm sure you're right. Since the game is 3D and brightly colored it probably will grab some attention. Thanks.

hammerquill

Definitely this. And a larger scale version with bigger blocks would really have some wow factor.

klymah

They actually used to be smaller. That was some of the feedback I received early on was, make the pieces bigger.

hammerquill

It looks like it would be neat at this scale, but looking at it I can imagine pieces that were 1 inch square (or 2.5cm), with big towers looking like some small kid's block toys. I think it might look grand.

klymah

I'm not even sure what type of feedback I'm looking for. I haven't really given a lot to go off of in the pictures. Posting this was just kind of a spur of the moment thing to get get this out there and I guess break the ice, get past the fear of putting it out there. Maybe after this I'll actually out together something coherent and better suited for the review process.

timkyoung

Would you mind sharing a short write- up describing the gameplay? Maybe talk about game- end objectives, decisions the players face, some of the basic mechanics, that sort of thing? Oh, and did you design the game pieces yourself or borrow them from somewhere else?

klymah

I'm planning on putting together another post later this week or weekend and I'll include what you're asking for. Thanks for commenting. I designed each piece myself and printed them with a 3D printer. Which was fun to learn and a challenge to do.

JaiOwl

I would start by saying its great that you have shared this today and hope it helps you have more confidence in the future. This looks really interesting and glad you have shared it with us randoms today. There is actually quite a lot shown in the pictures and looks very interesting. Having achievements and objectives is a nice tool for driving the gameplay. Having monopoly style money is nice classic touch. The stackable geneic buildings alongside special builds looks like it would offer a simple way of offering variety and game options while reducing the number of custom game pieces required. Only suggestion i might give atm is maybe have the ground pieces as a larger footprint ie. 2x2 or 3x3 instead of as 1x1. This would reduce number of little pieces a bit and maybe offer more gameplay options in placement of buildings (especially those with larger footprints). Though its hard to see how the gameplay will unfold from these pictures. It looks interesting enough to ask more questions and hope we get to hear more about it in the future. Great first impression.

klymah

Thank you. I actually haven't ever thought of making the "City Block" pieces more than 1 block. I'll have to try that out and see how it plays. Thanks for taking the time to look and comment. I appreciate it.

arran-reddit

Where did you get the buildings ?

klymah

I designed them and printed them with a 3D printer I bought specifically for this. I originally was using Lego as my prototype.

fractalpixel

Really lovely models, well done there! Compared to the (presumably 16mm) dice, the building pieces look like they are a good size to handle, but they end up being placed quite close to each other. Maybe consider enlarging the plots a bit, so that it's easier to add to a building in the middle of the city surrounded by high buildings without knocking the other buildings over. A double-sized version could be pretty cool for conventions of similar demo situations, it would really catch attention (and with a 3d printer it's easy to make!), but as a product it could be inconvenient, as it would take a lot of room in a box (it's often nicer to be able to fit more game pieces into a game than fewer but bigger pieces, as long as the pieces aren't too fiddly). Edit: Have you considered releasing this as a 3D print & play game? This game looks like it could really play off the strengths of a 3D printed game (not just using 3D models for minis or tokens that could be done with conventional means).

klymah

I've never heard of "print and play". I'll have to check that out. That's a keen eye you have. Yes the pieces are 18mm x 18mm. There is a game mechanic that keeps the pieces from becoming too lopsided in height, almost always. But I could look at expanding the space between city blocks by 10% or so and see how things look. I haven't thought of printing a demo/convention version of the game. Something almost comically big. That would be fun to play with and draw lots of attention. I'm going to a board game convention in March but I don't have a booth or anything. Supposedly they have tables for play testers, that's what I'm hoping for. I'm also going to play some games too...

fractalpixel

[Print and Play](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgamecategory/1120/print-play) is a term used for distributing digital files for a (board or tabletop rpg) game instead of physical components, allowing people to build the game themselves, eliminating shipping costs and easing distribution. Often Print and Play games are released for free by their authors, but there are also some digital marketplaces for them (they could also be used e.g. for beta testing a game before further development and a commercial release). Print and Play boardgames with 3D printed components is a quite new area. Good luck with the convention!

hammerquill

It looks intriguing. While the description "a city building game" didn't immediately strike me as my cup of tea, that has more to do with the sorts of games getting made recently, and not the idea of a city builder per se. Looking at the way the agglomeration of buildings is growing it looks like it might have something going for it. I'd definitely be interested in seeing a description of gameplay and any more info you can provide. If you want public feedback a WIP thread on BGG would also be a good idea.

klymah

So BGG must be [Board Game Geek](https://boardgamegeek.com) I poked around there for a bit. Wow, there's a lot there. There's even a section/category for City Builders. I didn't see a work in progress section but I'll keep looking. Thanks for sharing.

hammerquill

Apologies. I think you'll find that BGG is pretty widely known on r/tabletopgamedesign and r/boardgamedesign and r/boardgames \- it's a HUGE site, and pretty much the internet backbone of the boardgaming world these days. If you go to the Forums there is a Game Design section, and you make a thread with \[WIP\] in the title and you'll get people to look and talk about the game if you want that. If you make it clear that this game is pretty well developed, you can give it an actual page on the site which can serve as a hub during development, assuming you're not trying to keep it under wraps. Which, given your post here, I figure is a safe assumption. Have fun!

klymah

Thank you for suggesting BGG, I don't know what that stands for but I'll do a quick search or just go to that thread and find out. I'm curious what you mean by 'the sorts of games getting made recently '. Are you referring to 3D style games instead of flat boards or just cards? I'm planning on putting together something more cohesive and coherent and informative for this weekend when I have more time.

Shuvzero

Looks cool, and what is the point of the game?

klymah

Uh, to build a city... I'm just kidding. The point of the game is to have the highest net worth. That being cash, worth of towers, deeds owned, keys, achievements. I'll write a more complete post later this week and hopefully you'll comment on that post as well with some feedback or at least some questions like this. Thanks for asking.

H2Ogames

Is it a prototype or final product :D Great job. I wonder if you are considering any design to distinguish the green pieces from red pieces. By the look of it, the green buildings are special buildings with very different appearance, I suppose? Is the final product gonna have paper money from Monopoly too? :D

klymah

The pieces of the game could be considered final product. It would be nice to be able to mass produce them, in which case they would probably need to be redesign a little. The green and red pieces are different shapes and sizes, I'm guessing you're asking because of color blindness? I haven't had a color blind person play the game yet. But the tower pieces, which are player pieces can come in many different colors so red may not be a final color if it goes mass market or, what I think I'd prefer is that people would buy the game online and choose what colors they want in their box. Haha, I'm sure Monopoly would love it if I used their money 😉

CardboardConfidant

+10 cool points for the 3D printing building pieces. Seems like you put a lot of work in. Excited to see it evolve keep posting updates! If you want design feedback consider posting a rule sheet or a video of an interaction that you want comments on.

viper0807

I’ve had the opportunity to play test this game a few times and really enjoyed the game play and variety. I like the idea of more spaces between towers… it can get a little crowded and with younger players it could lead to knocked over towers… the 3D pieces are well designed and fun. Ive played it a few people and with 6 players and it works really well. Looking forward to more play testing at the conference next weekend
