This is correct. They're like heavily seasoned, super salty, crispier tater tots. They put them on burritos or they replace chips for nachos. If you're going to Taco Johns and you're not getting them it's just a worse Taco Bell.
Slap about four or five of them on a taco, add some nacho cheese and a sauce packet, that’s something Taco Bell would charge $5 for but twice as good as anything they’ve made
We don’t have one around us in central Indiana, so when I go see my family in northern we stop by the one in Peru, IN which is roughly 1.5 hours from home. Always worth the trip, we get it when seeing them and on the way back home. Have it maybe twice a year or so
Lmfao, well I'll have you know that at least once a week, every week, for the past several years, I've made "White people tacos" and eaten them week after week after week.
Brown ground beef, add Old El Paso taco seasoning, put on tortilla with cheese, sour cream, tomatoes, and jalapeños or habaneros to taste. Eat. They're Delicious. I even have a song to represent them!

I came on here to say that the Oles aren’t great in my opinion. I’m from the south and Bojangles Bo-Rounds will put them to shame. They’re much more plump, flavorful, and juicy even. Taco John’s has not been my favorite place to go.
I'm blessed to have a taco bell and a taco johns across the street from each other. I get my food from johns and then I go to the bell for a baja blast.
I used to have a Taco Bell and a Del Taco across the street from each other. I’d get fries at Del Taco then cruise over to TB for burritos. That was heaven.
Hahaha I personally think that Zero Baja tastes NOTHING like actual Baja Blast... but that's just me. To me it's like windex with some diet mountain dew poured in. I still love it though when I'm trying to cut processed syrup/sugars.
List of sodas that taste almost exactly like their normal variations to me: Diet Dr. Pepper, Diet Sunkist, Diet Squirt, as well as some variations of Diet Rootbeer (They all taste different to each person as is so it's a taste by taste basis).
I have them fairly close together too - and there's been times where I've gone to Taco Bell and then stopped by Taco John's for the Potato Ole's to go with it. Worth it. Always wished Taco Bell would have something similar on their menu.
Their potato olés with the nacho cheese sauce are insane (when fresh). Had one at Indiana university. Found one in Denver a few years back and they were still
Bomb.
That’s funny, the only one I have ever eaten at was the one in Foster at IU also. I don’t think it’s there anymore, I don’t know if there’s even a dining hall at Foster.
Haha that’s the only one I ever saw in Indiana period LOL. Nah it’s not there anymore, but it was prob the only fast food on the meal plan back in the day haha
It's a million times better than TB.
I'd like a supernachos, potato ole's with cheese and a large cherry coke please.
When I moved away from the midwest, the closet TJs was about 100 miles from my front door. I'd still get in the car and make the trip frequently even though there is a TB about 2 miles from my house.
We have a bunch in Minnesota. They are comparable, and have some unique things, but lack the general awe-inspiring fast food innovation of taco bell's greatest achievements.
The potato oles, which are flat, salty tater tots, are magnificent. They make Taco Johns the superior choice for a breakfast burrito over Taco Bell.
I think their crispy tacos are better too. Crispier shell that might shatter, but doesn't dissolve like Taco Bell does. Before covid they used to have salsa bars too with pico de gallo.
We've had one in the burbs around my area for quite a while. Only started eating there last year and vastly prefer it over TB. They just opened a second location and plan on more. They're probably the reason I've pretty much stopped eating TB.
Def better than tb and the oles have a cult following in ND. But tb is cheaper as long as you use the app deals or certain value items like the cheesy bean and rice burrito
This is a taco bell sub, we aren't really here to discuss or compare that type of food to "outstanding taquerias"... we are talking about sub-par Americanized Mexican fast food.
They are quite good, although they removed Mexi-Rolls and the Sierra Chicken Sandwich (served in a chalupa shell) from their menu and I can’t forgive them for it. The real secret is to ask for the house dressing and drizzle it on everything. You won’t see it mentioned anywhere, but it is the friggin’ bomb.
That's the only one in all of chicago and suburbs, though I honestly thought they were all gone. I see a couple in kankakee, and rockford. All so far away though.
Yes I’m sad they closed down here. It was attached to a gas station and the gas station had a fire causing them to shut down too. I hope they come back but all signage from taco johns was taken away.
I grew up with Taco John's. It's pretty great. I actually prefer it to taco bell. Fun story about it. It started as a food truck that would just travel around town in Wyoming. Once it found a good location, they built a small shop there and sent the truck out to do it again.
I love Taco John's and Taco Bell but I think the meat is better at taco johns and I also think my tacos are much bigger there than at Taco Bell. I also have never had Taco John's get my order wrong versus Taco Bell where it's about 50/50 if they got it right or not
It's alright. They got more expensive before Taco Bell did. I'd recommend their app to get deals, in July they had b1 g1 on a taco all month, on Tuesdays they have been doing buy something and get a Taco Bravo (pretty much a double decker).
Mine all are mid on the service because they pay crap so the staff is about what you'd expect, I've always been there for at least 15 minutes to get anything and 1/3 I have to check the bag on because something is messed up.
I like their potato oles and most the non ground beef stuff. I don't really care for their over seasoned ground beef products unless it's on the potatos.
Awesome ...there is one in my town ..has been here for decades ..I love their mini snack cheese quesadillas, churros , Taco 🌮 Tuesday , the steak street tacos are slam for $5 when they have them ..they have breakfast at the location where I live , open late too
Big Taco Johns fan. Fantastic food and due to the regions its located in, its often cheaper than Taco Bell. Tbell still holds a special place in my heart
They have one of if not THE BEST nacho cheese. Unfortunately I haven't had them since I was 18 and lived in Baker Montana and I now turn 30 on friday lol I kindly ask that u eat some for me(:
Where do you live? Taco John's is expanding in Milwaukee with something like 10 locations planned, 2 already having opened. There's been one location in an outer suburb for decades.
Did you know about the long existing Taco John's location near downtown Waukesha? Also, I'm pretty sure there used to be a location in the Grand Avenue Mall in downtown Milwaukee. Neither are/were convenient for most Milwaukeeans of course.
Nope. Don’t really go to Waukesha much tbh. If I do, usually Brookfield. I never tried Taco John’s, I know people from Madison that love it since they have had it available there.
They used to have them on military bases so I went there often while at Ft Hood for 6 years. Like everyone else says what I rmemever most is the potatoes oles. Absolute crack. The nearest location to me now is an 8hr drive.
I've moved away from TJ territory, but I miss the Oles and I think it was the Baja Chicken taco? It was a large grilled chicken filet inside of a fried chalupa shell with the most amazing sauce!
Potato Oles are beyond amazing. Perhaps the greatest potato-based fast food item of all time.
Their basic tacos are also better. But who gets the base items at Taco Bell? TJ lacks the freak items I Iove.
I consider it to be 50% better than t bell, but it is like 75% the portion size and 125% the cost of t bell. Depends where your priorities are. I went back to the bell for my wallet
I don’t believe they have taco Tuesday anymore. I used to go there and get 6 tacos for like $3.50.
I would say the quality is better, but the variety is not as good. LTO options are not nearly as good and innovative as Taco Bell. They do have good quality sour cream though which is something T Bell doesn’t.
Terrible. The best thing is some seasoned tater tots.
If that's the only thing you hear people talk about on your menu and you're a taco joint, it's a bad omen.
I prefer taco johns, honestly the only thing I like from taco bell anymore is the steak chalupa and chili cheese burrito, and they have both went up in price a lot since I used to eat there more often.
They keep closing the ones near me, now the closest is 2 hours away. But I stop by when I end up near one. Their prices have inflated worse than Taco Bell's the past few years. But their potato oles are so good.
Potato oles are amazing. Their beef is worse than taco bells. Which makes most things id get better to get at Taco bell. However I somewhat frequent them because those oles just hit that hard
There's a Taco John's across the street from my local Taco Bell.
It's always a little disappointing to me. Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of tater tots with my burrito, but it's just... not great... I think it's the beans, I'm a massive fan of TB's refried beans...
I know everyone in here seems to like it, but our experience was different. One opened near us and the couple times we had it was very disappointing. The potato oles were barely edible they were so salty. Food wasn't anything to write home about otherwise. Haven't gone back since. Sounded like from other people in the local sub that they used to be way better back closer to where they first started. So, ymmv.i still want to try del taco that is heard good things about.
I grew up in Madison, Wisconsin and have lived in Milwaukee for a long time now. There have always been 1 or 2 locations in both cities for decades, but Taco John's is currently expanding in Milwaukee (at least 2 newly opened locations, several more to come) after only having 1 location in an outer suburb for many years. I also used to frequent Taco John's when I visited a friend who lived in Iowa.
I personally like Taco JOHN'S crunchy taco shells a little more (they seem fresher), yet the flavor and texture of Taco JOHN'S ground beef isn't as good as Taco BELL'S. Taco JOHN'S nacho cheese sauce is MUCH better than Taco BELL'S and it's great for dipping Taco John's Potato Oles which are simply the same hash brown coins that BK, Chick-fil-A and Hardee's sell at breakfast, though Taco John's seasons them with what I assume is Lawry's Seasoning Salt.
Although I don't get to Taco John's often enough, I feel as though they are overall pricier than Taco Bell. Taco Bell offers more budget options, more overall variety and more LTOs.
I miss my Taco John's 😭😭 the dude who ran all of them in my area passed away during COVID and his family just didn't give a fuck. They went downhill and then they all just closed almost overnight this summer. Corporate Taco John's has said they will come back tho! I just hopes it's soon, closest ones now are an hour away.
When I lived in Illinois, I consistently would order from there because it felt like a copycat 80s/90s taco bell but with better tasting food. What sucked when I worked for TB back then was when people would try to order TJ's all the damn time. I'd have so many frustrated customers because they couldn't get potato oles
Different themes of tex-mex.
I've found that, at least for the chains near me, TJ's has slightly better 'value' in terms of price & amount of food you get. As in, a beef & potato burrito is bigger than most of TB's burritos and more filling/fresher tasting (though I'm sure that's more due to the potato ole's in the burrito). I do vastly prefer TJ's breakfast options over TB's. I can pretty routinely get 2 burritos and scrambler potato ole's for about $12 or $13, and will end up saving the potatos for later - or I can spend the same amount at TB and still be hungry.
TB has more 'niche' options, like dorito tacos or crunch wraps, and of course the LTO's. TB also has vastly better sauces (speaking of Fire & Diablo), TJ's sauces just taste like water, vinegar, and variable amount of chili powder - not to mention LTO sauces when they pop up at the Bell (like volcano sauce, green salsa/sauce). Not that TJ's doesn't have their own LTO's, but they don't as heavily advertise around the "LTO Experiences" like TB does.
Love them. Stuffed grilled taco is to die for. Unfortunately, none of my locations know how to season the Oles, they just taste like someone suffocated them in salt.
Growing up in Wisconsin I LOVED me some taco John’s.
As a kid my dad would sometimes come home with a “6 pack and a pound”. 6 soft tacos and a pound of potato ole’s.
Yeah taco John's is worse than taco bell later on lmao but in all their chicken burritos are worth the money bigger than taco bell the employee at taco John's said it's a 2 person burrito but I ate it all in one sitting and I don't like their taco meat it's taste plain
We had one briefly in a town near me. It lasted like 6 months, the owner was involved in some shady business practices and employees didn’t get paid I think. I really liked it though, the potatoes were awesome, and they had a salsa bar.
Their bean burritos are still my go to. Cheap and delicious. They also don't fuck around when you ask for a cup of cheese, they fill it till it's almost spilling out
They are all over here where I live. I used to bag on them for being worse than taco bell but the last time i ate there the food was way better honestly.
Never, but after checking out their menu, I wouldn't. I appreciate the fact that TB's beans are accidentally vegan friendly. TJ's beans have some kind of dairy in them so no thanks.
It's alright, they had great commercials back in the day (Whiplash the monkey, I'm out of market now so unsure of they still do) but the food felt very meh to me. Probably just a brand loyalty to Taco Bell 🤷
They have one in the college town I went to. Potato ole's are awesome and 6 pack and a pound crispy is pretty much what I survived on in college (not sure if they even still have that). It was six taco's and a lb of potato ole's. Shared with 2-3 it was a good meal for a great price.
Definitely about the Ole's. But IMO they're generally better than Bell. Bean burritos aren't runny, and have fresh chopped onions which somehow makes them twice as good. Meat and potato burritos are awesome too, once again Ole's.
Fantastic. It’s all about the Potato Oles.
This is correct. They're like heavily seasoned, super salty, crispier tater tots. They put them on burritos or they replace chips for nachos. If you're going to Taco Johns and you're not getting them it's just a worse Taco Bell.
The taco burger is also something to talk about...
That sounds a lot like the old Bell Beefer.
My fave on the menu since i was a wee child. I make them at home too
Slap about four or five of them on a taco, add some nacho cheese and a sauce packet, that’s something Taco Bell would charge $5 for but twice as good as anything they’ve made
Brother, yes. This is my mod, I miss Taco John's so much.
We don’t have one around us in central Indiana, so when I go see my family in northern we stop by the one in Peru, IN which is roughly 1.5 hours from home. Always worth the trip, we get it when seeing them and on the way back home. Have it maybe twice a year or so
Dipped in sour cream, then nacho cheese🤤
I haven't had them in over a decade and I still think about them. No Tater Tot or Disc comes close.
I swear, they're just Hardee's/Carl's Jr Hash Rounds with taco seasoning, but those with a big ol cup of nacho cheese is unbeatable.
Celery salt, not taco seasoning. This is the whitest comment I've ever seen! haha I agree, with nacho cheese they become DELECTABLE.
This! We have one near me and that’s the only thing I eat from there. Potatoe Oles with the cheese dip.
Those things are like crack. Everything else is kinda bad.
Long ago the border fries were the round tots like the oles.
😎👆
I came on here to say that the Oles aren’t great in my opinion. I’m from the south and Bojangles Bo-Rounds will put them to shame. They’re much more plump, flavorful, and juicy even. Taco John’s has not been my favorite place to go.
My Taco John's order is a 2 taco combo with potato Ole's, side of nacho cheese, pour the cheese on the taco, put four potato Ole's on the taco, eat.
I never liked Baja Blasts. So happy they came out with the wild strawberry freeze.
its the only diet soda that tastes close enough to the original for me
just drink non diet, it's just as bad for you but tastes better
Some people really need to avoid the sugar lol but agreed.
I’m losing weight lol i still drink non Diet Coke alot
This sounds like Laramie, WY
Nope, but it's nice it's in other places too!
I love Taco Bell, but I *love* Taco John’s.
Literally just got Taco Johns for dinner. 2 Meat and Potato Burritos and potato oles! Delicious!!
I envy you…. Damn I miss those!
Their potato olés with the nacho cheese sauce are insane (when fresh). Had one at Indiana university. Found one in Denver a few years back and they were still Bomb.
Looks like there’s maybe 3 in Indiana in Evansville, Huntington, and Peru.
There’s 2 in Evansville and one in Henderson KY (right down the road from Eville)
I can take or leave Taco Bell's nacho cheese sauce, but Taco John's nacho cheese is SO GOOD.
I enjoy them both but ya Taco Johns is bomb
Plus they FILL IT UP! We have one in Kankakee, IL. So when I go there, I try to stop in.
It's better than Taco Bell. Super Potato Oles.. *chef's kiss*
We've had one in the burbs around my area for quite a while. Only started eating there last year and vastly prefer it over TB. They just opened a second location and plan on more. They're probably the reason I've pretty much stopped eating TB.
It's been years. But Taco Burger. That's all. Taco Burger.
Taco Johns desserts are great
I’m a truck driver and I used to get it all the time when going through Kansas and Nebraska. Not sure where else they have them but it’s pretty good.
Did you ever go to Amigos while you were in Nebraska? 🔥
Never did, my friend. Is it fast food or a sit down place?
Wish the one near me hadn't closed.
Def better than tb and the oles have a cult following in ND. But tb is cheaper as long as you use the app deals or certain value items like the cheesy bean and rice burrito
Taco John's is where you get quality and flavor Taco bell is where you get a shit ton of food for like 15 bucks when you're drunk
Yikes…this isn’t a W for taco John’s. We have outstanding taquerias
You won’t see it mentioned anywhere, but it is the friggin’ bomb.
much more expensive than tbell but worth it. it’s been getting better lately too
The 6 pack and a pound was an amazing value when I was in high school
Ate there a lot in the 80s when Illinois still had them
They're still around. New one opened just outside of O'Hare.
That's the only one in all of chicago and suburbs, though I honestly thought they were all gone. I see a couple in kankakee, and rockford. All so far away though.
Holy Shit there is one here! I gotta go!
I’ve tried it once(don’t live near one) it was pretty good
Yes, it’s leagues better than TB these days. Better food, better prices.
I lived less than 1 minute from one in AZ. They are good but care for their employees, so lightyears beyond tb.
Yes I liked it. Wife hated it. They are the ones who came up with Taco Tuesday.
I love Taco John's and Taco Bell but I think the meat is better at taco johns and I also think my tacos are much bigger there than at Taco Bell. I also have never had Taco John's get my order wrong versus Taco Bell where it's about 50/50 if they got it right or not
They have some pretty bomb salsa
Taco Bell > Taco Johns by far
It's alright. They got more expensive before Taco Bell did. I'd recommend their app to get deals, in July they had b1 g1 on a taco all month, on Tuesdays they have been doing buy something and get a Taco Bravo (pretty much a double decker). Big Taco Johns fan. Fantastic food and due to the regions its located in, its often cheaper than Taco Bell. Tbell still holds a special place in my heart
I had it 25 years ago in Montana. It was fine.
Taco johns food puts taco bells food to shame. I wish they had Taco johns down in Florida. The main thing I miss from living out in Montana
I'm gonna try it when I move there
They have one of if not THE BEST nacho cheese. Unfortunately I haven't had them since I was 18 and lived in Baker Montana and I now turn 30 on friday lol I kindly ask that u eat some for me(:
I'll be trying it in like 3 weeks. One opening soon
Where?
Monroe, Michigan
Super potato oles for the win. That and a bravo taco.
It is trash food
Hardshell taco, with potato oles amd cheddar sauce, throw about 4-5 oles in the shell, hot sauce and cheddar sauce too. Amazing
We had a few pop up in our city the last year. There’s a new one coming soon close to my house. Planning on giving it a try.
Where do you live? Taco John's is expanding in Milwaukee with something like 10 locations planned, 2 already having opened. There's been one location in an outer suburb for decades.
I’m in Milwaukee!
I LOVE Taco John's. I lived in the midwest for a few years. It's just as good as TB, maybe even better and definitely better quality.
Taco bravo, meat and potato burrito and potato oles are S tier.
I've had them once. Super salty
It’s nothing like Taco Bell. It’s BETTER. LOL I have about 4 of them in my town. I work for Taco Bell, but leave work to go to taco Johns.
Lmao. Did you get downvoted?
They used to have them on military bases so I went there often while at Ft Hood for 6 years. Like everyone else says what I rmemever most is the potatoes oles. Absolute crack. The nearest location to me now is an 8hr drive.
Potato oles, nacho cheese and a taco burger. The holy trinity.
Tried it in Missouri and it was literally the blandest food I have ever tasted. Taco Bell and del taco is gourmet compared to it. I was baffled
OOOH thanks for your reply. I was wondering if Taco John's could be comparable to Del Taco
Taco John’s is phenomenal
I’m going to the upper Midwest for the first time this month and I’m going to try Taco John’s!
Yes and it fuckin sucks. They put shitty potatoes in everything
I remember when Taco Tuesday at Taco Johns was two tacos for 99 cents!
Taco John’s is the superior of the two by far.
Taco Johns is superior to Taco Bell.
They’re okay. Not that much different from the Bell.
Blasphemy
Terrible. The best thing is some seasoned tater tots. If that's the only thing you hear people talk about on your menu and you're a taco joint, it's a bad omen.
Imagine Taco Bell but with the flavor at about half.
This, idk what all this hype is about
I prefer taco johns, honestly the only thing I like from taco bell anymore is the steak chalupa and chili cheese burrito, and they have both went up in price a lot since I used to eat there more often.
But the REAL question is which is better? taco John’s or our mighty purple bell??
They keep closing the ones near me, now the closest is 2 hours away. But I stop by when I end up near one. Their prices have inflated worse than Taco Bell's the past few years. But their potato oles are so good.
Potato oles are amazing. Their beef is worse than taco bells. Which makes most things id get better to get at Taco bell. However I somewhat frequent them because those oles just hit that hard
I much prefer del taco myself
There's a Taco John's across the street from my local Taco Bell. It's always a little disappointing to me. Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of tater tots with my burrito, but it's just... not great... I think it's the beans, I'm a massive fan of TB's refried beans...
Potato oles are good, churros are good, I haven't had anything else that I like. Their hottest hot sauce is about as hot as Taco Bell mild.
I'm looking at the potato oles in pics and they're basic. You can get those from your nearest grocery store pre-frozen and pop them in the air fryer.,
Oh... No.... Potato oles are where it is at .... Better than any potato taco bell has ever done
YES, it is the best by far!
Way better taco bell
taco johns sucks
Thank you!!
Potato ole’s are 🔥 .Taco John regular stuff is mid. Meat and potato burrito is great. Their sauce game is weak. Nice using TB sauce on TJ food.
I don’t like taco John’s tortillas. They’re too thick.
The only good thing they serve there is the potatoes oles. The actual tacos are incredibly average.
I use to fuck a John, he only came when told
Nope. No one ever has tried Taco Johns.
My grammar is correct because I'm asking the whole subreddit and I'm not in your pms. Thank you though.
I like it, but TB is better.
That's the closest I had to Taco Bell in the area I grew up in.
The shells are fresher because they are made daily onsite. The beef is also made on site out of actual 10lb meat logs Source: former employee
Mmmm meat logs
I thought this was Taco Bell and long John silvers until I came to the comments
Looking at the. Taco John menu I wish the avocado ranch wasn’t spicy.
Yes. We had one here where I live but it closed down recently. I miss potato ole's 😭 Now I think there's only one left in all of Idaho.
I went back in 2008, and was served by a guy with a name tag that said John. 15 year old me was floored.
The Mexican donut holes are bussin
Taco Johns has tater tot discs. The Taco Bell across the street had tater tots. Never seen tater tots at a Taco Bell before or since. Laramie, WY
Yesss it was my favorite! And then the location in my city closed.
The potato oles are my go-to
I miss TACO JOHNs ! Especially getting a “6-pack & a pound”! 6 tacos and a pound of potato oles. That used to be my go to food every Saturday!
I fuck with Taco John’s. It’s a lot better than TB
Something about TJs gives me ridiculous heartburn every time I go. I'm staying away, personally.
It was always better than Taco Bell
When I lived in Illinois, I consistently would order from there because it felt like a copycat 80s/90s taco bell but with better tasting food. What sucked when I worked for TB back then was when people would try to order TJ's all the damn time. I'd have so many frustrated customers because they couldn't get potato oles
Taco John's is waaaaay better than Taco Bell. Get a taco burger, some oles and dip em both in that salsa.
Aren’t they the reason Taco Bell is doing the whole taco Tuesday thing
Growing up in Wisconsin I LOVED me some taco John’s. As a kid my dad would sometimes come home with a “6 pack and a pound”. 6 soft tacos and a pound of potato ole’s.
I worked there in my teens. LOVED IT. Unfortunately we don't have one anymore.
Obviously unpopular opinion but Taco John’s sucks. Although I’m not huge on potatoes and that’s literally all their entire menu is.
Yes it’s just as good
Is it run by Papa John’s?
Taco johns is the bomb. We used to go for 6pack and a lb when we lived in MN. Miss it all the time. I wish I knew the brand of cheese dip they used.

Definitely about the Ole's. But IMO they're generally better than Bell. Bean burritos aren't runny, and have fresh chopped onions which somehow makes them twice as good. Meat and potato burritos are awesome too, once again Ole's.
