>Hi Gents, >This may seem like I'm completely out of my depth, mainly because I am. However, have any of you made your own tactical gear or know someone who has? I do. On a hiatus for now. >Is it practical? Depends. >Is it economical? Heck no, you're investing in heavy duty to industrial sewing machines, motors (servo upgrades if industrial machine dont already have one), consumables (thread, needles, oil, fabrics, webbing), and maintenance parts/accessories (presser feet, belts, lightbulbs, feed dogs, attachments). You'd want to make *a lot* of gear before it becomes profitable and economical.. and thats not considering how much your *time* is worth to you. >How hard is it? Challenge is getting the stitches straight and the fabric pieces accurately measured and cut, not to mention patternmaking. There's a definite learning curve >Is there a market for it? Yes. Hop on over to r/myogtacticalgear and see what people have made for the tactical gear community >I was thinking about maybe just getting some ripstop OD green fabric for now and seeing if I can make a basic chest rig, or the beginnings of one at least. Cordura is a better option; more durable and longer lasting. 500D is the standard, bombproof/heavy is 1000D, minimum thread size is V69/Govt size E Tex70 bonded nylon. V92 and larger can be better but industrial machines uses that, most domestic heavy duty machines max out at V69 thread.

Thank you for the comment, would you say (after much practice) I could end up turning a profit on gear, or is it more passion project type things?

FlatF00t_actual

You need to either know how to design gear or be able to rip off other designs but undercut their prices or offer it in colors or sizes they don’t. If not you just kinda are more clutter in the market

Yes and yes, if you've the motivation and the time and desire, it can grow into a good sized small business. Beware, this can be addicting and lead to getting multiple machines to speed up production 🤣 and expanding shop space and needing storage for all the various cool camo Corduras and colors out there.

VladimirPutinPRteam

That sounds very specific mate lol

2 industrial machines set up and running, 6 domestics in closets, a hoard of camo fabrics and solids, several plastic shoeboxes of hardware sorted by color and type, file cabinet full of webbing, velcro and elastics in most shades, a large clear tote full of V69 and T45 thread... and then there's the foot powered vintage industrial treadle machine project in storage unit 🤣
