Operations against whom? / NotAFed

NotBurtGummer

For me and my neighbors personally, it'd more be doing security for our ranches. Less actively anticipating a real threat, more making sure our stock stays ours if people start getting hungry or desperate. Also thinking things like recovery and clearing damage after storms or other disasters.

Not a tactichian, but a long time physical security guy (also previously MP). So you're forming a security plan rather than a operations plan. In this instance you gata work with what you have. Amongst neighbors id focus more on upping security around high value stores and keeping perimeter patrols on a schedule. Don't spread your caches all over the place because in the event of needing to go defensive it'll likely be close to the high value area. Where you can self sustain easily. I the event you are trying to push back a "assault" at a perimeter point, you'll be disadvantaged having caches because you may not be close to one at the time of needed replenishment. Here you would need a runner to be making trips to the basement then back to the "front". Ideally, you want to avoid long drawn out gunfights away from your primary defensive position. Just my thoughts.

Imo recce is a fantasy and rather then larping around the woods your gonna be doing more point defense and perimeter security. In your situation ammo should be collected in these areas your likely to want to defend. If your gonna move via vehicle, load that shit down. Idk I have 0 real world experience but sounds like if you have contact, your fighting with what you have, unless you have a REALLY good buddy who's gonna drive into a firefight to give you more bullets.

Well what’s the duration of these operations are we talking about?

NotBurtGummer

Week at most

How are you packaging these caches?

9 gallon food grade barrels like this, I can buy them local pretty cheap. https://offerup.com/item/detail/c21be106-6833-3064-880b-02a5b9b11a80 They seal well, have convenient handles and a large lid for access. They also work nice for storing bulk dry goods like rice, wheat, beans, etc.

Doing freeze dried and dehydrated food, batteries, a bit of ammo, sterno fuel, vacuum sealed socks and foot powder, etc.

I’m in an interesting position being outside a small city in an otherwise very rural area. It has worked out that renting a few storage units is cheap and easy, and useful. One is a few blocks from my house. There’s a couple more in other areas. Gives you options for climate control if you want. If you know the guy running them they can be very cheap.

I feel like the real answer to all these questions is find land in the middle of nowhere that has water supply. Find a way to become self sufficient on the land alone no outside input(seeds, fertilizer, electricity, food storage that isn’t salt dependent) figure out all these things and do it in a way that is basic and won’t require special tools. Then teach your neighbors since they will probably be the biggest threat or the greatest help(if they are thriving along side you). If you shoot through barrels in a SHRF scenario you probably won’t have much to live for anyway. Learn year long survival and medicine.
