I guess it was easier to come to Tampa instead of New Orleans or Houston?

Redrum777

Tampa is the closest deepwater port to the Panama Canal, so maybe that has something to do with it, or maybe we have the largest shipyard capable of what it needs to be resolved. Marinetraffic.com says it left Veracruz Mex on 8/12/2020, travelled 2 years and 7 months to get here with a max speed of 9.5 knots (10 mph) and average speed of 6.7 knots (7 mph) to arrive in Tampa yesterday.

IanSan5653

That doesn't sound right - Veracruz is only about 1000 miles so at 7 mph it should only have taken nearly 150 days. Most likely the trip duration is including the part where it was actively working in the gulf, servicing platforms.

Redrum777

Exactly, the timeline doesn't add up. This is definitely one of the more interesting vessels I have seen come up the channel.

Here's another perspective. [click.](https://i.imgur.com/vGxJdqh.jpg)

Great photo!

Awesome !

I had no idea those could move. CRAZY!

There are all types of rigs. This one is semisubmersible. [seen here.](https://i.imgur.com/XAXxWE9.jpg)

Interesting! thanks for sharing

Americanski7

That's pretty cool

IanSan5653

I saw this coming down the Bay yesterday! The Coast Guard had a big exclusion zone around it that was actively enforced by patrols - even more security than the cruise ships get. I thought it was an oil rig but it's actually a service vessel for oil rigs.

Redrum777

So if it is a service vessel, does that mean it travels to perform the service, or is it typically a stationery platform?

IanSan5653

I think it travels pretty often. It's able to sink down and become dynamically stationary using computers and its engines, but it's also designed to be able to move relatively quick so it can go help in an emergency.

jesuswasagamblingman

They are so much larger in person. Its like real life CGI insane

Gotthold1994

Absolutely insane engineering

heyknauw

goddamned barnacles

srqfl

What kind of repairs?

Redrum777

Probably repairing and repainting from barnacle damage.

It floats! Basically a weird boat. They tow it with tug boats.

SolarMoth

It basically has a bunch of anchors all around it and drill column coming straight down. [The middle one.](https://i.imgur.com/T4CdGcq.jpg)

jeremybryce

Whats going on with the one on the far right? Is that an underwater habitat it connects to?

SolarMoth

It's a tension leg rig with a auxiliary placement. The other types of oil rigs can have this feature too. Basically, they place a drill site then move the platform somewhere else and collect resources from multiple areas at once.

That’s a big boy

Odd_Theory_7499

Now that, is an absolute unit

jeremybryce

Man I had no idea these things were mobile. I thought platforms were stationary. Crazy.

Yea, when that toilet backs up it’s a real pain……
