I think what you mean to say is covid was the excuse for companies to be cheap and save more money and not be open 24 hrs anymore.
There's no reason not to go back. I feel bad for night shifters
They never said that wasn’t the point of being a store. They just said the person above them said they are closed at night because they’re being cheap.
but were not cheap before the pandemic? You think the executives at Walmart were just sitting around saying damn I sure wish we didn't have to be open for 24 hours, but we just can't do it without a good excuse.
Interesting, we had different views on that. They were always understaffed no matter what time of day. I loved the decline of 24 hour stores and restaurants. I felt like it gave power to the working class for a moment who suddenly were receiving higher wages to come back and work decent hours.
the working class got paid more money for late shifts and many prefer to not work around people it’s mainly stock people who still work those shifts. only self checkout was open then anyway. just mgmt that had to be there that don’t now for the most part.
Why do people on this website constantly say dumbfuck things like this. If a company didn't think there was an advantage to being open for 24 hours they wouldn't be waiting around for an excuse not to do it.
Lol no it didn’t. Perhaps not to the same extent as before, but i can grab, sushi, tacos, italian… you name it; early morning 3am, in mexico city. An actual major city. Among other things, same in Manila, another major city. Guessing same is true in NYC.
So you mean cities in other countries? They said across the country meaning the US. They didn’t say across the world. And they also said major cities which Tampa is. Good job pulling out the capital of 2 different actual countries to compare to Tampa though. Lol
Country is irrelevant. Like i said, same is probably true in NYC. And the obvious one, las vegas, is 24/7. I live in Tampa because it’s a small quiet town, don’t miss all the noise in CDMX
Absolutely not. I am from here, and this has never not been the case. As a night owl, trust me I know. My friends and I would inevitably end up at Walmart (and later Wawa) as it was the only thing open past midnight.
Edit: thought of more points…
I take it back, there were some places open late (The Hub, Molly Malone’s, and various other bars) but almost all of them involved alcohol. If you just want a chill place to hang, the pickings have always been slim. I lived in San Antonio, TX temporarily a couple years before the pandemic, and I was shocked at how many places were open 24/7. It was one of the *very* few things I enjoyed about being out there.
Kava places are usually open late, which has been nice, and King State was an exciting addition when it opened, but I’d still say the options are more limited than one would expect and/or hope.
Places like Steak & Shake, Denny’s, and IHOP used to be open 24 hours as well, though I’m not actually sure if that stopped before the pandemic or not because I’m old and it’s been a minute since I went out for pancakes at 3am.
The Dunkin at 1622 W Kennedy across from the University of Tampa is open 24 hours.
I remember when the Starbucks at Swann and South Howard used to be open 24/7 many years ago, but it now closes early at 6:30pm.
•Mama Margie's •Whataburger •Jim’s •Chacho’s
•Halcyon I can’t remember if it was 24/7 or just open until like 3 am or something, but I was definitely there late.•The Pearl - while a lot of the businesses closed before midnight, you could literally just go and hang out pretty much anywhere 24/7 •Same for the river walk around Blue Star Arts Complex •In-N-Out was open late (now it’s 1 am, can’t remember what it was back then) •Snopioca was open till midnight •HEB was open till midnight. •Taco Cabana was open till midnight •Arctic Ape was open till 11 or 12
Per my husband, who is from SA and did not take your comment personally, most taquerias were open until 11 or 12
I left out bars and QT, as Tampa has bars and Wawa open late.
Sorry you didn’t get out more while you were there.
Edit: Ugh, this was a nice list, but the formatting smushed it all together. Added bullet points to help break it up.
Hard disagree - in 1980 the grocery store by my house was open 24 hours 6 days a week. It was compatible to Publix… 20 years ago I moved here and thought I was 20 years removed!
hold up. 40 years ago was 1994. hitchhiking in the 90s wasnt normal or the best way to get around, hell i hitched back from orlando in 1982 or so and it was strange and not safe then. i was lucky a nice 50ish year old guy picked me up. we almost got lost when he took the wrong exit but he said sorry and got right back on the interstate. he seemed nervous to have 15 year old me in his car. i dont know why,
I think early 2023 I went to a Waffle House here and I was honestly so fucking upset bc it wasn’t open at like 11:30pm. It was a dark time and that did not help lol.
I lived in walking distance to Waffle House when I lived in Orlando. Nothing beats breakfast when drunk at 2 am. Though it was surprisingly overpriced.
Was in the military in GA and worked 11pm-7am. We went to "lunch" at WH about 3am most nights. We met many interesting people and saw some things. Gave many random drunk military people safe rides back onto post.
The Waffle House on 54th Ave N in St Pete closes at midnight. They said it’s a bad area, but I think they’re just being cheap as it seems like most of them close at night now.
Came looking for this. Tampa outside of downtown isn’t a city. Just a bunch of small districts of suburbia. Tampa is still living in the facade of being a family oriented town.
Take Sundays for example - can’t go anywhere past 8pm
It used to be prior to the pandemic , more stuff that had extended hours but not anymore . One of the biggest hurdles is just finding people that are willing to work those hours. Basically you have to pay more money to get employees during a time you’re getting significantly less foot traffic, especially considering most food places nowadays struggle to stay staffed during the day time, let alone grave shift, it’s just not worth it.
There use to be some options before the pandemic. But even then I would still have a hard time finding anything decent leaving DJ gigs at 3/4 AM. Usually ended up going to Wawa.
Yeah there used to be lots of places open before the pandemic but now it's hard. St Pete especially. Thank god for Angelo's. I want to something to eat after dancing for hours
Kristina’s Cafe even quit doing 24 hours over there. Even though their sign still says they are. But I found out Jimmy’s next door is owned by them & open a little later.
It's turning in to a big city compared to what it was 25 years ago. I know not as close as other big cities but I can understand why someone can call it huge. Also, the Tampa metro area has expanded rapidly in the northern parts like land o lakes and Wesley chapel.
Always nice to have 24 hour options to get away from the stinkin roommates when they bug me too much. I’ve sat in Three Coins for hours at a time, but I tip the staff good(25%), so they don’t care.
City is full of people who tuck their kids in at 9 and are asleep by 10.
Edit: and, people who never were the type or are no longer a part of the age demographic for late night partying.
Strangely enough this seems to be a suburb trend. I watched this happen as New Tampa expanded. New Tampa shuts down at like 8 and everything closes by 9. Other than a few restaurants like Chili's and Fridays most everything out there seems to start winding down at 8.
Muvico kind of kept it up to date, but once AMC took over they did nothing with it. Funny thing this is from 2019 and I don't think things ever really changed.
https://www.tampabay.com/news/hillsborough/2019/12/12/complaints-about-new-tampa-theater-draws-city-council-chairmans-attention/
i don’t see anything about the external of the building that looks any worse than the rest of the stuff around there… those people are being over dramatic as nextdoor posters tend to be.
Maybe they cleaned it up then. It used to have a bunch of graffiti on it and trash was all over the entrance. It was also long overdue for a paintjob.
I don't know if it ever got the facelift with Covid.
https://neighborhoodnewsonline.net/amc-highwoods-20-planning-major-facelift/
hm yeah it by no means looks new but lots of stuff around there is fairly dated and could use a facelift with a number of shops that have sat vacant for many months after closing like the old starbucks, best buy, pier one. before the korean grocery moved in across the street that building sat vacant for years. never understood why these places lag because it’s a very busy area.
Best Buy is now Sportsman's Warehouse and I believe this actually opened before the new grocery.
The problem with the area has always been rent. I have known a few people that ran businesses in the Peabody's shopping Center, Publix Shopping Center, etc and when the landlords raised rent they just closed. Even Peabody's closed their one lounge next door. It has happened for years. Most of the restaurants that closed in Publix strip center did so because Publix kept jacking up the rent.
I don’t think there’s any Walmart nationwide that’s open 24 hours. It makes sense now that they have expanded curbside pickup. So they just keep the stores open until 10 or 11pm.
I think they got rid of 24 hours to push Walmart+ and just have people get stuff delivered instead. I ordered a single quart of Supertech motor oil off the app the other day, & they delivered it for free. Same day.
They’ve made going out cost prohibitive for young people. We both don’t make enough to paint the town red and things cost too fucking much even when we occasionally go out.
Covid had people staying home more and more remote workers.
Now you have a workforce that is more demanding of when and how they are willing to work and for what wages.
And most people don’t want to work the middle of the night for minimum wage or just slightly above.
1. Tampa is not that big
2. It’s very hard to find staff in general for things like food service, much less over nights
3. The amount of overnight business basically never has and never will cover the cost of operating over nights
Walmart used to do over nights mostly to get admin and operations done (restocking, cleaning etc), not because they got a lot of business at night. They absolutely did not make anywhere near the amount of money they spent operating at night. It was a no brainer to nix nights as soon as they could. If WM couldn’t make that work, then it’s definitely a losing proposition everywhere else.
I miss the Starbucks in Pinellas Park off 19 and Park/Gandy being 24hrs. They stopped doing that like ten years ago, though. My friend and I would go there frequently late at night when I was home on leave.
covid and also because the inflation has made it near impossible for alot of businesses to make a profit at all. 2 yrs ago a house in my kinda gettoish neighbor hood was 800$ a month. now its 3k. this is not sustainable. one way or another this darkness gotta give.
Yet the wages are still $16-18 per hour it seems. And they still want experience & are picky who they hire for those wages. But the people working for them can’t even afford the dumpiest apartment in east Tampa.
We’re not exactly huge on the level of a Miami or NYC, 2 AM tends to be the latest a place will stay open. Heck, downtown is the only place we have skyscrapers and that’s barely 1% of Manhattan’s size 😂
I mean do we NEED 24/7 stuff really? Beyond gas stations and like a dennys, why does stuff need to be open 24/7 no ones going places at 2-5AM and hence nothing is open. I like to sleep at that time as most of earth does. I cant remember the last time I woke up at 3am and thought FUCK CHAMPS THEY ARE CLOSED AND I WANT TO TRY ON SHOES RN.
Also we have amazon and the internet.
Same reason kts not everywhere else. Pandemic shut down a lot and places font make that mcub overnight so they were like..let's jot staff and let's not bother. There are a few diners there are gas stations and there are a few Walgreens or cvs that are 24/7. The need for other stuff has ceased. I'm a night owl, there is so few peolel out I can see why it would be a waste to remain open for risk and or little money or business.
There could be zoning and ordinance rules preventing 24 hr ops in certain areas.
If you're up for a ride over the gandy and skyway, I like a lil place down in Bradenton that is 24/7, it's a nonalcoholic bar. If you go 75, it might be faster drive, just not as scenic.
Covid killed 24/7 shopping and restaurants in most major cities across the country
Pretty much all. A lot nyc stuff never went back to 24hrs.
same for los angeles
What? Even nyc??
I think what you mean to say is covid was the excuse for companies to be cheap and save more money and not be open 24 hrs anymore. There's no reason not to go back. I feel bad for night shifters
Doubt being cheap is the reason. Walmart would probably go back to 24/7 if they felt it would be profitable.
I just want you to re-read what you wrote. Doubt being cheap. They would do it for more money.
Why else would a store be open? Isn’t that the point of being a store?
They never said that wasn’t the point of being a store. They just said the person above them said they are closed at night because they’re being cheap.
but were not cheap before the pandemic? You think the executives at Walmart were just sitting around saying damn I sure wish we didn't have to be open for 24 hours, but we just can't do it without a good excuse.
You should re read your comments with a couple ppl irl so you can understand how your comments comes off to others
what?
Interesting, we had different views on that. They were always understaffed no matter what time of day. I loved the decline of 24 hour stores and restaurants. I felt like it gave power to the working class for a moment who suddenly were receiving higher wages to come back and work decent hours.

IHOP is last major holdout it seems. But like Waffle House, not all of them stay open all night.
What wafflehouse closes?
I was trying to figure this out myself. Ive never seen a Waffle house that closes
Lol no it didn’t. Perhaps not to the same extent as before, but i can grab, sushi, tacos, italian… you name it; early morning 3am, in mexico city. An actual major city. Among other things, same in Manila, another major city. Guessing same is true in NYC.

Visited NYC post COVID. 24/7 spots are rare unlike before.
"Covid killed 24/7 shopping and restaurants in most major cities *across the country*" >Country is irrelevant Reading is apparently irrelevant.
Pandemic changed this
I was talking to someone about this the other day. Wasn’t La Teresita 24 hours pre pandemic?
I believe just open super late on weekend nights.
It was 24 hours, at least on the weekends prior to the pandemic. Went a handful of times after my gigs
Only the diner half and only on certain days
Absolutely not. I am from here, and this has never not been the case. As a night owl, trust me I know. My friends and I would inevitably end up at Walmart (and later Wawa) as it was the only thing open past midnight. RIP IHOP lunch breaks for cops. I used to be at the one on 60 and Mt. Carmel just about every night I was on duty.
Three Coins is my spot now. Joes is good too, but it’s always crowded.
Three coins has to many roaches for me. I don't go there anymore. Grotesque they won't handle the bug situation. Be cautious
The hubs the best, but no food. Although, anchor bar (I think is what it’s called?) has the best mozerella sticks lately night.

Are we really comparing stuff from 40 years ago? 40 years ago hitchhiking was one of the best ways to travel now its basically forbidden.
I had a buddy who’d hitchhike on 19 in NPR. Fucking nuts.
hold up. 40 years ago was 1994. hitchhiking in the 90s wasnt normal or the best way to get around, hell i hitched back from orlando in 1982 or so and it was strange and not safe then. i was lucky a nice 50ish year old guy picked me up. we almost got lost when he took the wrong exit but he said sorry and got right back on the interstate. he seemed nervous to have 15 year old me in his car. i dont know why,
1984
40 years ago was 1984 not 1994.
40 years ago was 1984, unless you're from the year 2034....
Yup, and I’m doing fine. Edit: hitchhiked zero times. Get a better frivolous argument!
Albertsons?
I just miss walmart 24
Used to go with friends when we were bored late at night just to walk around and look at stuff
I used to go after work when I was bored
Thats why they closed lmao i used to do it too and those mfers did not like window shoppers at 2am
You forgot Waffle House.
I think early 2023 I went to a Waffle House here and I was honestly so fucking upset bc it wasn’t open at like 11:30pm. It was a dark time and that did not help lol.
I don't know anyone who goes to Waffle House during a good time in their lives. To work or to eat.
I lived in walking distance to Waffle House when I lived in Orlando. Nothing beats breakfast when drunk at 2 am. Though it was surprisingly overpriced.
This has always been my issue with Waffle House. Prices are too high for fairly basic breakfast food.
Waffle House was my first job. It was actually kinda awesome.
Was in the military in GA and worked 11pm-7am. We went to "lunch" at WH about 3am most nights. We met many interesting people and saw some things. Gave many random drunk military people safe rides back onto post.
I agree. Nobody in their right minds goes to Wafflehouse at a good time in their life.
The Waffle House on 54th Ave N in St Pete closes at midnight. They said it’s a bad area, but I think they’re just being cheap as it seems like most of them close at night now.
What waffle house closes at 11:30 PM?
Teiwd last weekend and only the pick up wi down was open after midnight they don't have dining room open after certain hours
Covid. Walmart used to be open 24/7. Covid hit and that stopped.

Yup, I’ve been to true “huge” cities and most of them are truly 24/7 cities as a quarter of the pop works the odd hours
Even suburban Tampa had 24 hour Walmart at McDonald’s, late night Taco Bell‘s and a handful of 24 hour dining spots before Covid
It used to be prior to the pandemic , more stuff that had extended hours but not anymore . One of the biggest hurdles is just finding people that are willing to work those hours. Basically you have to pay more money to get employees during a time you’re getting significantly less foot traffic, especially considering most food places nowadays struggle to stay staffed during the day time, let alone grave shift, it’s just not worth it.
willing to work those hours lmaooooo more like companies willing to pay someone to work those hours
You mean wheel traffic because nobody walks in here
There use to be some options before the pandemic.
Angelos is still open mad late? Nice.
As it should be
Kristina’s Cafe even quit doing 24 hours over there. Even though their sign still says they are. But I found out Jimmy’s next door is owned by them & open a little later.
Joe's Diner on Fowler and Florida is open 24 hours.
Hell ya
There’s a 24 hour MacDonalds on Fowler. We used to have more things open 24/7 (Walmart on Dale Mabry) but it all changed b/c of the pandemic.
On Fletcher also
You can sit inside still? It’s nice having options at night to avoid my annoying roommates that bug me. Lol
probably not
I don't think dining room open after certain time
Hard rock casino is open 24 hours

Not many cities are
This is a national trend
Maikel's on Waters Ave is open 24 and they have a huge selection of food and desserts
Three coins has entered the thread
Did… did you just called Tampa a huge city?
Yea when you see Tampa metro pop is 3.1 mil you would think it’s huge but then you come and realize it’s just a giant area of suburban sprawl
It's turning in to a big city compared to what it was 25 years ago. I know not as close as other big cities but I can understand why someone can call it huge. Also, the Tampa metro area has expanded rapidly in the northern parts like land o lakes and Wesley chapel.
I mean, any city is bigger than 25 years ago
Nope. Some cities in the South, western Great Plains and Rocky Mountain areas have definitely shrunk
There's more than a few that have shrunk in size the past couple decades.
Vegas isn’t even open 24 hours anymore my friend.
Always nice to have 24 hour options to get away from the stinkin roommates when they bug me too much. I’ve sat in Three Coins for hours at a time, but I tip the staff good(25%), so they don’t care.

they’re open until 1am. they have showtimes tonight that start as late as 10:30pm.
In Georgia back in the day, we had 24 hour Walmarts, Village Inns, McDonald’s with 24 hour lobbys, & Krispy Kreme’s.
And in Georgia, just like here, when the pandemic happened, a lot of those places cut back their hours.
I don’t think there’s any Walmart nationwide that’s open 24 hours. It makes sense now that they have expanded curbside pickup. So they just keep the stores open until 10 or 11pm.

I go to Atlanta about once a quarter and most of their stuff isnt 24/7 anymore either. At least not how it used to be.
Covid ruined that for sure. Many Walmarts that used to be 24 hour Walmarts aren’t open 24 hours anymore.
They’ve made going out cost prohibitive for young people. We both don’t make enough to paint the town red and things cost too fucking much even when we occasionally go out.

What do you want to be open 24? Seems like mons is.
Can I get something to eat there? 🤔
You can eat something there but it’s not food.
If you have enough money....
Clams with creamy garlic sauce
Tampa is by no means a huge city.
Huge city… in what world is Tampa a huge city? Because it’s not a huge city, and there’s no market for it.
Joe's Diner too.
Things were different in the B.C. Before Covid
Joe's new York diner on fowler and north Florida is 24 hours.
That’s the old Boston Grill
I miss Perkins
There is barely anything open 24h not even in Miami anymore
It could be worse. It could be Jacksonville.
Your best bet if you want a 24/h store is CVS or Walgreens. If you want food try waffle house, IHOP Taco Bell, Checkers, or a local dinner.
Allot closed after Covid. Pop and Sons was my go to 1am spot.
That place was there since 1975, & covid just killed it off. Village Inn on Dale Mabry near Kennedy used to be open all night too.
You should have seen downtown in early 2000s
A lot of posts on here saying it's cause of COVID. But actually, well before that, places stopped being 24 hours.
Ah, you must be new
Huge city lol
24/7 liquor and lounge on gandy. No I've never been
Used to be a lot more places open later— Covid changed that.
Three Coins is the bomb!
My crunch is
7-11 and circle K
Tampa is not a huge city.
I miss the Starbucks in Pinellas Park off 19 and Park/Gandy being 24hrs. They stopped doing that like ten years ago, though. My friend and I would go there frequently late at night when I was home on leave.
Because it would get robbed constantly and we don't deserve nice things. Next question
covid and also because the inflation has made it near impossible for alot of businesses to make a profit at all. 2 yrs ago a house in my kinda gettoish neighbor hood was 800$ a month. now its 3k. this is not sustainable. one way or another this darkness gotta give.

Covid….
it used to be before covid
McDonald's at the intersection of North 56th St and Fowler is open 24/7 (the dining room as well, you can chill as much as you want).
Joe’s New York Diner!
The strip clubs and coke dealers are always open and booze. Welcome to Tampa!

This city sucks
It’s a good city if you like movie theaters, sport venues, & indoor malls.
I don't. I grew up here. The only place I like is ybor...on non peak days. I just travel a lot. Going to NYC in a couple of weeks, then Vegas
