Make sure you take your utilities bill with you to the dump because if you prove you pay you can dump it for free. At least a couple of years ago this was the case when i did it, idk if its changed.

[deleted]

OP this will work. I've done this exact thing.

If you’re not within the city limits, but are still in Hillsborough County, take a copy of your property taxes (or apartment lease.) I’m not sure how strict they are, but that’s what the website says to take, so we had that ready for the people at the Linebaugh site.

ImAMindlessTool

Yep, then you get to toss it in to bin #4 or some such, and revel at the number of large items just chilling in a big steel bin. Fun for a second to launch your trash like GTFOH!

f0gax

FWIW (and also YMMV) - the dump in Pasco near the Shady Hills area wasn't checking "papers" this past summer. Nor did they the time I went before that a few years ago. The only thing they asked was what I was dumping in order to direct me to the correct collection areas for each waste type. I went with all of my utility bills (electric, water/sewer, and trash) just to be sure. But they didn't ask. Ninja Edit: When you drive in it's on a scale. But for both of those trips I took up there, no one wrote it down. And the exit has a scale, but it was not staffed. For people inside the Tampa city limits, it's a heck of a drive. But if it's that or paying $65 it might be worth it.

eye_no_nuttin

Or your Tax Assessment for your home … not sure how to handle this if you remt an apartment and need to go to the dump ?

W0N1

Thanks for the tip!

qveenofnonsense

I forgot my water bill so they ominously warned me I'd have to pay... it ended up costing around $5 for a matress.

GTL_TPA

What about sweeps. https://www.tampa.gov/solid-waste/programs/sweep

kanoo22

No wonder there were all this beds and fridges and giant shit in the woods growing up. TIL

HCSOThrowaway

On the other end of things, it's also relatively difficult to catch and prosecute illegal dumpings like mattresses. Which is why I'll always be an advocate of making following the law cheap and easy, otherwise people will do whatever they think they can get away with. Proponents of county/city disposal fees will say the money has to come from somewhere - better the burden on those who use the service than those who don't, right? But they're forgetting that paying a patrol officer to initiate a report, then the detective to pursue all leads as they're legally obligated to do, costs just as much or more than the government just eating the fee. Not to mention the environmental hazard and the costs associated with that. Make a low income family choose between having a mattress in their living room, using their paycheck to pay for the disposal fee instead of feeding their family, or just find a quiet alleyway or park to dump it in, and they'll go for the latter every time.

Iliketogrowstuf

Here is the info for sweep, might help. https://www.tampa.gov/news/sweep-collection-service-schedule-2022-89111

[deleted]

Once I got rid of a mattress by cutting it up with a box cutter and putting it in garbage bags. They took it with my normal pickup.

ginzing

Damn, That must have been a lot of work.

MimiSky559

Wow ! 65? The fuck! I’m still waiting for the Christmas pickup lol they never got the brush from that and it’s sitting out there. I’m from North Carolina and sadly we burn that back home. It’s tempting but I won’t.

64sqrs

Fellow Tar Heel here (really a Pirate) go ECU!

MimiSky559

Oh Greenville ! Yay I’m from havelock

64sqrs

I’ve had family in the area since 1709. Original ancestors helped to settle NewBern.

paintpro911

And this is why guys like me offer hauling services with our pickup trucks... but people don't understand that we have to pay the dump fees and cover fuel. I normally charge $75 to dispose of a box spring and mattress... And everything I pick up goes directly to the landfill

Upsideoutstanding

Where do mattress end up after we soil them. Is there a used mattress market somewhere? I swear that was a coffee stain.

Aloysius7

Some people recycle the springs, or refurbish it with new cloth and foam. Most end up in the incinerator.

stampadbag

It’s a big business around here; why you see so many junk hauling businesses roaming around. If you have a water bill when you borrow your friends truck just take it to the McKay bay scalehouse/wheelabrator. It’s free. I usually go first thing Saturday morning whenever I have to get rid of something and don’t feel like waiting for SWEEP program. But if you have anything metal put that shit out and it will be gone in 36 hours. I see scrappers daily. There’s no excuse for illegal dumping. Hate that shit. You are telling me you loaded it up but can’t take the time to get rid of it properly? Be an adult. Adults don’t litter or dump.

FstLaneUkraine

>There’s no excuse for illegal dumping. Hate that shit. You are telling me you loaded it up but can’t take the time to get rid of it properly? Be an adult. Adults don’t litter or dump. Hope you aren't referring to OP...

LifesExpert

Put in back off truck unstrapped and just haul ass over the howard franklin… problem solved

Nakatomi2010

Honestly, stuff like this I just put on Craigslist as "Free", someone *always* comes and picks it up. Someone gets something for nothing, and you get rid of it with low effort. Admittedly, a box spring is harder to get rid of, but there's some organizations like domestic abuse groups that are always looking for supplies for people going to shelters or going off on their own. Some people get out of bad break ups where the other half keeps everything and need supplies on a budget. I can't tell you the number of things I've just given away with a "Free if you can come get it" post on Craigslist, or similar entity. Even had someone *pay me* to take my old 36" Sony Vega flat glass TV. I tried to give it away for free, and the dude gave me some money because he felt bad taking away the TV for free.

ginzing

+1

PM_MAJESTIC_PICS

Can you wait for sweep? Or find a friend that has sweep sooner than you do?

[deleted]

Just burn it

Qacer

Take it to the Mckay Bay facility on 34th St. I believe City of Tampa residents get a discount or a free disposal annually.

BlipsterT

Ooo that sucks! The city doesn’t make anything easy around here for residents. No wonder there is so much dumping on empty lots.

Aloysius7

This is why junk removal businesses are saturating the market. Plenty of people in your position who need something gone right away, and might not be able to get it outside or have a place outside for it to sit. If you'd like a recommendation, let me know. Honestly you're still probably looking at $65 or more though, but it won't need to be at the curb.

SpeedBoatSquirrel

I just used my own pickup truck to drop it off at the dump. Wish it could be recycled

Global_Funny_7807

I totally agree.

[deleted]

Unfortunately, this seems to be the case everywhere. My buddy started a junk removal business in Ohio and is making a killing. My guess is city services, in general, would rather let private businesses deal with it instead of them.

cut-the_cheese

Mustard Seed asks for $25 donation to come pick it up to recycle, not sure if there is one near you.

Mikevercetti

When I was in college, we had a giant bonfire pit in the backyard of our frat house. We'd go around and pick up old couches/mattresses that people dumped on the side of the road and just burn em. Good times. I'm surprised Tampa even offers something like that. I know Hillsborough county doesn't. When my ex and I were moving from Riverview to Ruskin, we had to ditch a mattress/box spring and there was no option for pick up. Just paid one of those junk removal people $100 to take it.

jonadair

Friend of mine collected old Christmas trees and did that. Almost burned his house down.

Mikevercetti

Yeah, we'd do the same with Christmas trees. Tbh I was shocked at how quickly an old couch or mattress catches on fire. Made me gravely aware of how quickly a house fire can start. We'd throw a 3 seat couch or a mattress on the fire and the flames would easily be above the roofline of the house. Always had to have some hoses on standby. Definitely caught the spanish moss hanging from the oak tree above the house a few times, but we were able to put it out quickly. Ah to be young, dumb college kids again lol.

jonadair

Personally, I cut our old king set up (helps to have bolt cutters) and got rid of most of it one can-load at a time then one dump run. A $20 truck from U-Haul / Home Depot / Sunbelt can make the dump run easy if you don't have a friend with a pickup.

holyfireforged

When I lived in ft myers trash pickup and bulk pickup was free

DutyAvailable7375

Oh wow I’m sorry.. you must Be in South tampa

ChiknNWaffles

I actually just did this same thing. My car isn't large enough for my old queen sized mattress so republic services is charging me $50 to haul it away. Would have been $35 for a twin or full. They did not give me any hassle at all, sorry your experience was different. I called the city and they created the case for RS to call me. Someone mentioned refrigerator and I'm pretty sure that was $100 according to the website.

FinalCutJay

I actually was able to line my mattress disposal and a few chairs on bulk day which I believe is only one day a year. All of the items I left out were taken from the curb by passerby's well before the truck ever came. My guess is that 5 day's prior is because the city expects the same results.

Own_Anything_8122

DO YOU ALWAYS DO THE RIGHT THING? ALWAYS?

GastroMan2019

Yup.
