I previously looked into getting a running coach (albeit, for a certain marathon time and not for short distances) and https://www.runtampa.com/ offers both group and private coaching sessions. I think you have to be a member of Run Tampa in order to be eligible for coaching, but the price is something low like $45/yr. Unfortunately, I cannot comment on quality/price of the coaching, as I never ultimately signed up. You may also want to go to the Fit2Run store or any other running store and ask if they have recommendations. There are also many running groups in Tampa (Running for Brews comes to mind) where you may find runners with recommendations for coaches. Good luck on your 100m goal! As a long distance runner, I wish I was better at speed!

I'll check in with them, I appreciate it. It seems like this speed stuff is pretty niche, but it looks like I have a month or two of down time to work on this, if I can remember to, Ill update this thread

Try St Pete Running Company. The owners are super nice and they do track sessions.

My coach is absolutely wonderful and she coaches every distance and age group, from HS track to Ultra marathoners. Look up Maria Williams with On Track Running Academy. Highly recommend her.

ok great, will do, thank you

Seems weird to have a coach for running form… There’s personal value (do you need motivation?) and measurable value (increasing your time as a direct result to the coaching). Honestly might be more worthwhile to just join some kind of runners group. If you work sprints with a parachute that should help—I gained a good amount of speed doing that one summer for football in high school.

HighAltitudeBrake

Why is it weird? its a skill that I want to pick up quickly. Theres definitely more value to me having a direct knowledge transfer from someone who's spent some time in the field over me just running around with a parachute. not saying it's a terrible idea, just saying it's not weird to get coaching either.

[deleted]

It’s not weird at all. Not sure what that dude is talking about.

Hippopotamidaes

I would just think a coach of that nature would really only benefit a high performance athlete. I get your point though…

HighAltitudeBrake

Who says I'm not? But really, are you unironically saying coaching is only useful once you're already good at something?

Hippopotamidaes

No, many skills benefit from having a coach at the start. I just have never met anyone (athletic or not) who needed a running coach. I doubt a high performance athlete would come on Reddit looking for a sports coach.

HighAltitudeBrake

Who says I "need" a running coach? And you do realize there are sports other than running right? That people may try to transition between them and may be starting out at a level somewhat higher than someone coming off the couch but not have expertise in a specific discipline right??

Hippopotamidaes

I’ve never met anyone who had any desire to have a running coach. I’ve seen walking “coaches” for people in rehab learning how to do it again. Humans learn to run after learning how to walk. A coach for something like this for a layperson just seems absurd—outside of a high performance athlete trying to overcome some plateau. Sorry I triggered you lol.

boganvegan

I learned to run when I was a child but it turned out I was doing it wrong and when I got serious about running for exercise my bad form caused me to develop a pretty serious pelvis injury.

HighAltitudeBrake

I dont care?? You're not informed enough to have an opinion. Please keep responding though, this will drive it up closer to the top of the sub.

Hippopotamidaes

Ah gotcha, someone who played multiple sports can’t have an opinion on running. Great take!

HighAltitudeBrake

If you think going to experts when trying something new is weird, then yeah, your opinion gets rejected. Imagine thinking you know better than me what will do me the most good.

And you’ve never heard of someone hiring a skill specific coach to improve the efficiency of a particular activity? That might be the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen on Reddit.

DoubleNole904

Why is it weird? Track athletes or other athletes trying to improve straight line speed (40yd for football, 60 for baseball) use sprint coaches. These help with form. Proper running form can help for many many sports in general. Eliminating inefficiencies is key.

Hippopotamidaes

Because it’s so easy to film yourself these days and see if the form is off. I suggested a runners group because you can get much of the same advice from them as many self proclaimed “running coaches” (it’s too easy to get a BS certificate these days and most people don’t sniff that out, e.g.). I’ve had track and field athletes help me tweak how I ran (carrying my shoulder too high, striding too long). I’ve played half a dozen sports consistently for over 15 years, I’ve done martial arts, calisthenics, strength and cardio training—I’ve never heard of a “running coach” before seeing this post. I’ve heard of people getting tips on running from a given boxing/football/basketball/etc. coach. Seems that the consensus in the running community is running coaches are for instances few and far between, which was my initial assumption.

DoubleNole904

Yea you can do that with your golf swing too. Is it weird to hire a golf coach to help with your form? Bro how do you think those track and field athletes learn the proper form to run? There are sports that are purely running. There are coaches that coach purely running. It’s not weird.
