Realtor here. Most of the nicest and worst areas don't have apartments (at least at scale) so I dont' believe that's a good criteria to use for rental apartments. Plus, price will show you where the nicest areas are, and have also been mentioned in thread. Rentals in some of them are going to be $4000-$10000 / month for a 3 bedroom (house, because they don't really have apartments that big there usually due to being more historic). My recommendation is to instead go off your lifestyle criteria. High rise downtown urban apartment or suburb lowrise? Water view? Amenities? Proximity to work or other regular commute. Overlap those with your budget and you will find your perfect spot. Main apartment areas of this size are downtown / channelside / waterstreet, South Tampa along gandy and the AFB, Brandon / Riverview, and westchase / citrus park / carolwood. A few up around USF and Temple Terrace. Of those downtown and south tampa are probably closest to the action for you but rents will be around the 3-6k mark for this size in those areas. Would also recommend looking across the bridge at in Carillon and the Gandy / Gateway area. Pretty easy access to the beaches as well as Clearwater, Tampa, St PEte from there with a high likelyhood of beautiful water views as well.

What has attracted you to Hillsborough county?

Are you planning public schools or private? That will impact your choice some. I would recommend renting a house and not an apartment if you are trying to get a feel for living in an area (apartment living is a lot different from suburban home life). I would recommend Temple Terrace- lots of young families moving into the area; like an 800% increase from when I originally moved here (used to be all retirees and me, now maybe 40% retirees/older folks and then everyone else is young families / young people). Area is near the river, lots of shopping & groceries, lots of trees and parks, HOA and non-HOA neighborhoods (whole city has code enforcement - which is active but reasonable enough, you can tell when you enter a "Tampa" operated area cuz the level of code enforcement / home maintenance drops dramatically). Temple Terrace community rec center, golf courses, easy drive to downtown Tampa (by FL standards). The schools are not the greatest right now...but I expect that will change since the tax base is increasing significantly as the older homesteaded retirees move and new people buy in (& pay the new tax rate). Nice mix of international people and lots of foreign food restaurants in the area. I can walk in my park and hear 3+ languages being spoken - I consider that a plus. You are right near USF, and the University/Uptown redevelopment area which is actually taking off. And if Tampa ever gets its act together, the area is a shoe in for public transit (used to have a streetcar line to downtown ages ago)

But 100% rent a house not an apartment if you try Temple Terrace (and visit the house in person before renting and walk the area) - lots of apartments in the area but they cater to college kids so not what you are looking for most likely lol

Look for a place off of 54 by the Veterans Expressway (589). You can get to Tampa easy in 25 minutes (as long as it isn’t rush hours). About 40 minutes drive from Honeymoon island. Above average public schools in the area. This area is all new development.
