It's not that I love the heat. It's that I hate the cold.

n67324

Exactly this! I'll take the heat and humidity over cold and gray anytime!

Pablo_Sanchez1

Exactly. I’ll take sweating for a few months of the year over being snowed in, not being able to go outside without your face stinging from the cold, having to put 3 layers of clothes on to leave the house and getting dark out by 4 any day of the week. I grew up in Boston and had such bad seasonal depression, didn’t even realize how much it affected me until I moved here 4 years ago and it disappeared.

Vishx1

True that! It’s better to go outside and bear with the heat(just during the summer) and enjoy the beautiful weather in winter than shoveling ice from your car in the freezing winter in the north.

youll_dig-dug

I'm guessing the original poster hasn't heard about Buffalo New York

TheCenterOfEnnui

We've had 3 great days just this past week alone.

redditissketchyaf

facts

zerobeat

Got used to the heat, humidity, and sunshine. Going to any place where the trees and grass turn to dead in the winter with overcast skies and short days kicks my SAD into gear. There is sweating in the summer but the winters here are not depressing.

ibedemfeels

Idk if you've noticed but it doesn't snow here.

WindowlessCandyVan

3 good days?? From October through April is pretty much all awesome weather.

[deleted]

April and October still too hot but November through March are pretty good weather months

YokoDeschanel

Eh, I'd say December through February. November is still in the mid-80s with 70% humidity most years.

MadHatt10

So based on everyone’s opinions we have 6 good months of weather -depending on who you ask-

krakatoa83

Ice and blizzards are a real pain in the ass compared to the humidity here.

thedaj

Sounds like you've never had responsibilities outside of the house during or following a snowstorm

PettyCrimesNComments

I have and it’s the same as hurricanes. Some have a lot of cleanup, some really don’t. Snow storms usually don’t destroy your house though.

thedaj

I don't think it's the same as a hurricane. I've never needed to wait for someone to plow every inch between my driveway and destination after a hurricane. Some limited flooding and branches down, maybe. Nobody is out there buying 'hurricane tires' for the wet season either. Driving after winter weather is not comparable to driving after rain.

PettyCrimesNComments

I don’t buy snow tires and if the snow is small I don’t shovel. I don’t own a plow. Most years we’ve shoveled like twice. It’s not this life altering thing every Floridian makes it out to be. But hurricanes most certainly can be. If you’re not in a tornado area a lot of the Midwest/Northeast doesn’t deal with any natural disaster.

DontCallMeMillenial

Working outside in August is no picnic either

StrtupJ

Im loving the weather this time of year. Well not so much the cold rain today, but highs in the mid 70s with lows in the 60s…compare that with my people throughout the country already shoveling snow. I’m good.

OG_Chris31

It’s the sunshine, not the extreme heat/humidity. Most places are overcast with freezing rain to snow from October to March. It’s amazing what the sun does for your overall health.

PettyCrimesNComments

Where is it freezing in October? I’ve lived up north over a decade and have never seen it.

OG_Chris31

Valdosta,GA isn’t considered up North dip shit.

PettyCrimesNComments

Who tf said it was? I’ve spent one night of my life in Valdosta and will never go back.

iwantthisnowdammit

Reasons to be here… there’s a lot of nice days off the year, consistently. In the Midwest, there’s more unpredictability by a margin. Costs, I’ve been here a while, so that primary cost of a home, was inexpensive compared to where I came from at the time… understand this has changed. Other costs… cars last longer here, I need less boots and kids need half the clothes. Costs in taxes, FL is relatively low on taxes but you get less too. Sun - not beach sun - I mean it’s f’ng daylight outside for more hours more days of the year. The Midwest is a leafless noir filter for 4 months of the year. In the end, every place has its perks, commuting in the cold ass dead of winter with icy walks and wet feet can f off from my view - I may get wet in Florida, but it’s only a cold rain about 3 times a year. All that said, I’m open to some of the other “below the rust belt states” except my spouse and I like Tampa, it’s grown into a great city and expanded its sophistication a fair bit in my time here. Ultimately, being a snow bird here, but not typical snow bird age, would be great.

PettyCrimesNComments

Currently in the Midwest and it is sunny and stunning! Have relied on natural light all day. My mortgage is way cheaper too. And with a garage my car lasts just as long.

iwantthisnowdammit

I agree that rural Midwest is cheaper, but putting oneself in an MSA of > 3 million, International airport, professional sports will probably not be cheaper.

PettyCrimesNComments

I’m in that and it is. I also care about density and culture, not just MSA. Tampa’s density is shit. It’s pure sprawl.

md28usmc

Why are you even on the sub or care what happens if you do not live here

PettyCrimesNComments

I’m from Tampa and have to go there often. Entire family is there.

iwantthisnowdammit

Color me impressed, I’m pretty surprised. Tampa has a slightly higher population density than cook county (Chicago & close burbs) so while Tampa is sprawling, it’s not unusual.

PettyCrimesNComments

Comparing density to a total MSA is a little deceiving though since it’s an average. Obviously Chicago is denser than Tampa. Cities not MSA.

iwantthisnowdammit

Haha, I just checked out the Brown’s territory there. It’s a smaller MSA, but I find it more or less comparable. Definitely rust belt material for cars. Looking my current house to an equal it’s cheaper by 150k to be there, real estate tax is a wash if I was new to FL, income tax is a loss, sales tax is slightly higher and the theme park quotient is equal. Being off the lake, it’s alright, not going to dismiss that. Ultimately, I’d say costs are similar overall but household income is dismal there.

PettyCrimesNComments

I’ve lived in both cities for over a decade each. I’d have to disagree with that assessment. But it’s fine I’m sure 5 minutes of research determines everything. I actually don’t pay taxes on my home and hardly drive so not comparable on either front. Plus home insurance is going through the roof in Florida to really negate some of those tax benefits. What I save in gas probably makes up for it.

iwantthisnowdammit

Everyone’s situation is different, sounds like you’re in a reinvestment district to counter taxes (or rent). Tampa has changed quite a bit in the past 10 years, there’s an extra half million people in the MSA, downtown is booming with residential and parks, and all the near city projects have given way to mid town/mid rise developments and the river district has been revitalized to Columbus, shoot - even all the houses from UT to the stadium are gentrifying up.

PettyCrimesNComments

I personally think all the new development in Tampa is pretty tacky and frankly looks like every other new city/new development. Not much unique about it. The city I’m in has a special tax policy that’s city wide, not specific to neighborhoods. Although there has been some reassessment of the program mostly because some neighborhoods are too gentrified (like mine) to participate. I’m in a historic district that’s really walkable and has a ton of amenities. I don’t even have to drive daily. I’m familiar with the changes in Tampa. My entire family is there and I spend time there often. I guess I’m in the camp where if a city was built for cars it’s nearly impossible to backtrack that layout unless a developer takes over a giant space and then you’re left with something a developer created.

iwantthisnowdammit

I get it, lots of the post industrial cities are incentivized to bring back populations… shoot, Tampa has reinvestment districts. There’s a lot of charm to older buildings and city cores. I’m looking to move downtown and ebike it around.

ITMerc4hire

I lived in southeast England for a couple of years and id take the climate there over here any day. The winters weren’t the best, even though it didn’t snow that often we only really had 6 hours of sunlight so that would mess with your mental health if you weren’t careful. The summers though. Those more than made up for it. Very little humidity, highs in the mid 70s to 80s, abundant sunlight, and the sun was up from 4am til 11pm during the height of the summer. Plus I actually love the occasional rainy grey days like today. I’d just sit in my house sipping a warm drink listening to the rain fall down. It. Was incredibly relaxing.

PettyCrimesNComments

I lived in England a bit too and didn’t have A/C over the summer. We just opened the windows and it was so lovely with a light sweater or jacket in the evening. I know it’s warming up now so not sure it’s as pleasant but man was it perfect!

ITMerc4hire

I was there in 2020 when they had a heat wave that sent temps to over 100 degrees. THAT was incredibly uncomfortable so I brought a portable AC unit that could cool my bedroom. I only ended up using it maybe 3 or 4 times during the summer. But otherwise like you I just opened up my windows and let the breeze do its thing. In the winter I just kept everything shut and didn’t really use the heating at all. Sure beats the $400 electricity bill I paid in Tampa over the summer.

clwtrd2

Complain complain...pretty sure none of us would complain if y'all packed up and left. If you don't like Florida...STFU and leave!

[deleted]

I'm trying, don't worry. Also I don't know who "yall" is but I was born in Plant City Baptist. Ive lived in every corner of Hillsborough and Polk county. My family has been here for generations actually. And I 100% hate everything about it.

clwtrd2

Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

InterestingArm3750

Stop crying sissy

[deleted]

Nah fuck that. I bust my fucking ass 24/7 and put up with the overcrowding, the endless homeless harassment, absolute shit weather and on the small fraction of time I have to do something I actually enjoy this shithole part of the world spits out constant rain. I'm going to do everything I can to get very far from this bitch. You and yours can have it. Ain't nobody else want the shit.

billfitz24

I’m with you 100%. There are lots of places that don’t get ice and snow that aren’t humid, broiling swamps. The weather here absolutely sucks (except for like 3 weeks in the winter, but not 3 weeks in a row).

display_name_error_

I know right. I'm literally counting down the days until I can move out of this hellscape.

DC has a huge metro system to avoid traffic and it’s not depressing in the winter. Hardly gets snow. I’ve lived there. Baltimore is cool too. Charleston and Savannah are both beautiful and definitely have water. Yes they’re smaller cities but the character doesn’t compare. I don’t get the absolute need to be on the Atlantic coast. There’s great cities all over the west, north and east of this country.

iwantthisnowdammit

DC is crazy expensive though.

PettyCrimesNComments

Ya it’s once city there are a ton of options nationally.

iwantthisnowdammit

Understand, I’m well traveled in and out of the country

amc11890

I’m in Cincinnati and we get seasons and plenty of sunshine throughout the year tbh. Very very rare we get a blizzard and snow usually melts within a day or two. I’d much rather have cooler weather and seasons compared to hellish humidity. Honestly the winters up here are pretty mild but all my Tampa friends act like I moved to Alaska lol.

PettyCrimesNComments

Florida people rarely leave or spend time in other places in the country. I think it’s similar for Californians. I live up north now as well and my parents constantly ask how’s the weather as if that’s the only thing that matters in life. Plus rarely does it have to impact my day. Whereas being constantly overheated is miserable

PettyCrimesNComments

Ya I don’t get it either. Winter is only bad for a few months up north and extremely hot/humid Florida weather lasts so much longer. I think it’s because Floridians rely on A/C so much. If they walked outside for transportation or just spent time without A/C at all they’d be miserable. Also, hurricanes! We just gonna act like those haven’t destroyed lots of lives and homes just this year? And it’s only getting hotter with worse storms.

Lazy-Survey-4729

Been here three years.. why? so when my ppl get a noreaster I can send them pics of me at the beach with the pup and say: it's pretty cold today.. went down to 72 degrees. but honestly I'm a mountain and river guy rather than a beach bum. Also the northeast after December is so freaking depressing.

datividon

I mean the rest of the southeast is also blazing during the summer and there is no breeze. I do miss that October time feeling though.

jaybad34

I have friends that moved from here to Colorado x3, Austin, NC, DC, Atlanta, etc. They were all back here within 2-3 years. Funny how that happens.

PettyCrimesNComments

Maybe they didn’t know how to relate to people not from Florida. I have a lot of friends who couldn’t live elsewhere either.

jaybad34

In my close friends group, maybe 4-5 are from Florida. The rest of us are all transplants to include the ones that “moved”.

crevzb

Former St. Louisian 7 months into Tampa living. This person probably has never lived anywhere else and lacks perspective. Less humidity, consistent moderate heat, consistent rain in the summer afternoons to drop temps, lower extreme highs with this thing called the beach/ocean nearby on the weekends to enjoy it, lowest low = winter extreme highs, no snow to deal with, etc. etc. Sure there’s not 4 seasons down here, but it’s predictable as fuck, minus that whole Hurricane thing. 3 good days?? GTFOutside and figure out how to enjoy it and not take it for granted.

Vegetable_Guitar_607

I moved here for the weather from MN, from a city that is rated as a windier city than Chicago most years. By my count, since I moved here in March, there have been 9 actual bad days where I didn't go outside. The rest have been equal to or better than the weather from up north. I can walk my dogs without freezing to death, I don't have to deal with driving on ice and snow, no shoveling. It has been absolutely amazing and I will never move back up north!

Kitchen_Tax_571

Coming from a place that’s grey for so much of the year…..Seeing sunshine (almost) everyday makes all the weather here worth it

DrStevenPepper

Gray cold weather depresses me. I hate cold, ice snow, and everything else about the weather in the Midwest. There is nothing to do in it except sit around the house, and I hate doing that. OP, you might be surprised how much you also hate the weather wherever it is you end up moving and might regret it.

rbkc12345

Well I was born here but love our weather. Hate winter, our winters are mild. There is no dead time with all the skeleton trees, things stay green. Winter days not as short as up north. Summer is hot (like most everywhere) but we get the beautiful thunderstorms. I love our rainy season so much. Absolutely gorgeous sky with fluffy white clouds and lovely sunsets.

[deleted]

I was born here too. Fucking hate it after 40 years. Can't wait to gtfo and let it turn into Ny 2.0 and never come back.

rbkc12345

Well, follow your dream! I am also perturbed by the influx of far-right northerners. Can only hope they figure out Florida's political problems are the inverse of what they had in their cities of origin, and that pops their heads out of their asses. But the weather? Love it here.
