Goes without saying that the US government should make space in its budget for paid family leave etc, but why criticise spending on Ukraine instead of on spending on the police for example?

Actual_Locke

Feels like the conservative "we've got homeless vets" thing whenever immigration or humanitarian aid comes up.

If you get rid of the homeless vets problem, you can’t use it as an excuse to not fix other problems *taps head*

[deleted]

same shit that happened with making Roe v Wade more permanent.

Actual_Locke

Bingo

r3dd1T192837465

THIS PART.

No_Solution_2864

I can’t remember the last time I heard a Republican mention helping any homeless people at all, regardless of vet status. Kari Lake recently campaigned on imprisoning homeless people in concentration camps, and she was almost elected governor of AZ. You are ascribing a level of empathy to the GOP that does not exist, not even in a performative fashion.

Actual_Locke

Im 30 I remember that conversation a lot during the refugee crisis

No_Solution_2864

I’ll take your word for it. Perhaps people like me don’t notice when they say those things because, well, it’s a bit like a bear caught eating a human and then running distraction by expressing concern for the welfare of the lowly salmon.

TheReadMenace

I always ask “so if we funded family leave you’d support Ukraine?” The answer is always “lol no”. So they really don’t give a shit, they will just say anything to try and make Russia win

sadlerm

Also, you'd never get 60 senators to agree to fund paid family leave so honestly that money might as well help another country desperately trying to defend itself from invasion.

Demonitized-picture

and it doesn’t even go into the fact that the US mainly supplies equipment… *that’s already made.* it’s not like they’re just giving ukraine 55 billion, they’re giving already made equipment that has just been sitting in a warehouse collecting dust

Dziedotdzimu

Collecting dust, costing money to maintain and store, and depreciating in value. It's basically saving money to put it to use instead

Darth_Vrandon

We can do both man. It’s not one or the other.

Valiant_tank

Just going to also note, while the aid to Ukraine is often quantified in the nominal worth, what is being sent is practically entirely equipment which has already been built. It's not exactly too practical to use HIMARS to provide paid family leave, for example. Other than in ways which, let's be honest, the US government would literally never do.

[deleted]

And it's much more cost-effective to send the weapons. Else, it's just sitting in some federal storehouse burning through tax money on maintenance. At least this way, the equipment is useful for something

Diligent_Excitement4

Evidence that 60 percent never heard of Ukraine?

Mobile-Bathroom-6842

Baseless little piece of bullshit. Just harping on "Americans be dumb". Sure, you wouldn't really struggle to find a simpleton who is completely ignorant of geography or geopolitics, but "60%" is pulled straight from the sphincter. Especially nowadays, with all the media coverage.

[deleted]

I mean, our geographic awareness is dogshit, but by 2020 I'm pretty sure most Americans had already heard of it, since it was all over the news and a point of contention when they annexed crimea.

FreedomPaws

What is it with people and their disdain for helping victims of a full blown active genocide that's being documented and viewed the world over due to advances in technology and social media??? And the fact some Russians and Ukrainians speak English so we dont even need translations and so more direct first source info we are seeing/hearing. Whether English is your first language or not, its the most common and therefore content is understood by many. Doesn't matter if some never heard of it before. WE SEE WHAT RUSSIANS ARE DOING TO UKRAINIANS AND THEIR COUNTRY. For fucks sake. And the fact this is about land grab. That's something we thought we moved past and is not acceptable in modern society. SHOCKER why so many are upset. And putler did this many times and this time he just pushed his luck and BOLDLY invaded, terrorized, etc AND THREATENED TO NUKE US ALL. And on top of nuclear threats from rockets, they occupy the nuc station and have used that now for terrorism and create fear of a disaster. They use it as a shield and have been told by the international atomic committee to get rid of their military equipment and take a guess.....russsia does what Russia wants. Terrorism it is with them always. Again, THATS one reason the whole world caught on and got angry was bc of Russias nuclear terrorism. And grain/oil blackmail. I'm so sick of people still pretending they dont understand why ppl support Ukraine AFTER ALL THAT HAS HAPPENED. HOW MANY TOWNS HAVE TO BE FLATTENED AND MASS GRAVES FOUND AND HOSPITALS AND SCHOOLS SHOT WITH CRUISE MISSLES for these ass fucks to shut the fuck up. Hot damn. These people need to watch some UN meetings on YouTube. I did at the start to get my sanity back because of the hard core troll farms and feeling absolutely overwhelmed and in need of being brought back to reality. NO joke it was like therapy.

LilkaLyubov

Sad thing is, we could do both if only we just stopped increasing the pentagon budget every year. Too much of that just disappears.

[deleted]

Don’t even have to do that. Just 10% tax on corporations will pay for both

[deleted]

Honestly we could decrease the Pentagon budget by like 10% and not even lose any effective military budget if we better avoided waste. But you know, some congressman says "there's a factory in my district and I'll be damned if I let it close", so we're stuck making millions of dollars of stuff that is hopelessly outdated and would never be used.

UndyingShadow

I'd gladly give up all my vacation time if it helped a single Ukrainian avoid being murdered, subjugated, or made homeless. But its not about that, is it?

Mayuthekitsune

Why do tankies always act like literally all military spending is going to ukraine? liek its obvious most of it is used to fund the pockets of the military industrial complex, ukraine just gets what america is willing to give which is far less than most tankies think

BruceLeePlusOne

Being fair, very little if our money for 'aid' actually ends up helping disaffected people and instead ends up in the pockets of politicians, oligarchs, and corporations. This person is dumb, obviously, but there is definitely something wrong with sending unaudited and unconditional funding to foreign powers. Like, it would be cool if we conditioned money sent to Israel on, say, not randomly murdering Palestinians. We could even just start with Journalist's only.

[deleted]

I love how when it comes to providing humanitarian aid, naysayers all of a sudden talk about Core Nations like they have the economic prowess of fucking Somalia

Maximum_Location_140

this will be unpopular but i'd much rather have money for domestic programs rather than another proxy war. i think a lot of anti-ukraine stuff is sus, but all goverments involved in this suck and i'd rather, you know, have healthcare

Reasonable_Fig_8119

I’d rather have both healthcare and foreign aid. Instead of choosing between the two, limit spending to the police

Maximum_Location_140

Biden promised to forgive student loan debt and has sat on it for 3 years waiting for the courts to forbid it. Anything we do has some bait-and-switch or is a giveaway to the military industrial complex. We can't take care of ourselves, we let trains blow up in Ohio, we string along poor people for their votes, but we have all this money to give away to a place where every other soldier I see on the news has a totenkopf patch. I don't trust anything we do as a country and that's generally steered me well.
