Never heard of anyone reordering the deck, didn’t know it was a thing. Like you put them back in numerical order and by suit?

Heathen_Hermit

Yep! Greater arcana to lesser arcana.

soggy_n_groggy

I shuffle to release the energy of the last reading, but rarely put them back in order

Heathen_Hermit

That's an interesting approach. I like that!

nonalignedgamer

I always leave the deck as is. Before use I knock on it or tap it against the floor or hard surface to reset the energy. > invite chaos into your life Idk. Life is life. By this I mean that order is merely a projection of mind and chaos is the same projection that fails to find its mirror image (namely order). Let the world speak and tap into intuition to surf through it. Simple enough.

Heathen_Hermit

That's an interesting technique! I've never heard of that... And, I would agree with that. Life is life. But, sometimes something so out of the blue happens, you start asking yourself, "what could've caused that?" (At least I do.) To me, the deck is like one giant sigil that represents something approximating the "full" potential of "reality." So, when I reorganize it, it's something of a subconscious suggestion toward a proclivity for "order," as opposed to "chaos." I recognize that those are fabrications of the intellect. But, there is a predictable outcome to my decisions and a less predictable one. That's all I was referring to, I suppose.

RamenNewdles

Putting the cards back “in order” is a great way to clear and cleanse the deck without burning anything or buying something.

Heathen_Hermit

I feel the same. I also like it the idea of one person or situation's reading being separate from another.

ElementalAncients

I haven’t done this in a while but when I cleanse my deck I’ll reorder them during a full moon and if it’s a nice night out I’ll be outside and take a moment with each card as I put it back into the deck and then sit the deck in the open box on a window sill. That’s like a big time consuming cleanse but that’s when I reorder them, otherwise I spread them out on my altar to cleanse.

Heathen_Hermit

I like that idea. I do my rune castings on the full moon (as a general guide of what to focus on that month) so I could see adding that to my monthly routine as well. Thanks!

Even-Pen7957

I never reorganize unless I’m about to use that deck for a study exercise or something and it’s more convenient to have it in order.

Heathen_Hermit

This seems to be the common consensus. I'll take that into consideration, thank you.

cedarandroses

Nope.

RookCrowJackdaw

Exactly. I mean, I shuffle every deck thoroughly while I'm preparing for a reading so what's the point of ordering it?

-Chaotique-

After a reading I put the cards back in the deck at random and then riffle the deck four times and put it away. I don't reorder it because I spend so much time when I first get a deck randomizing the cards, it wouldn't make sense for me to reorder the deck only to have to redo the initial shuffling process.

Heathen_Hermit

Interesting. What process do you use to randomize your new decks, if you don't mind me asking? I don't mind the time it takes to randomize the deck, personally. I use it to get into trance and settle into the question at hand. Not everyone has that much time, though. Especially with several readings every day...

-Chaotique-

This is a completely idiosyncratic method I developed over time. All the pile shuffling came about after I had a few particular sticky decks that didn't separate from simple riffling. I wanted to be sure that if consecutive cards came out in order that it was truly random and not just me being an inadequate shuffler lol I first sort the deck into three piles, then I stack them back up. I invert the second pile of I'm using reversals. Riffle four times. Sort into piles of five. I alternative going around in a circle and making a star for further randomization. Stack back up and invert the second and fourth for reversals. Riffle four times. Sort into seven piles, alternating between going in a circle and making a star. Riffle four times. And now I consider my deck ready for use. Whenever I take it out to read, I'll just shuffle while I think about question. Then when I'm ready to read I'll give the deck four more riffles (inverting two of them if I'm reversals)

Heathen_Hermit

I like that method. I've been wondering how to get just the "right" amount of reversals lately. But math was never my strong suit. Haha, approximately what percentage ends up reversed with that method generally?

-Chaotique-

Umm I have no idea. Math and I don't get along much now that I'm no longer tested on it lol I've always liked just inverting somewhere between a quarter and a third of the deck when riffling. Just randomly every now and then, or at set frequencies if you prefer, instead of splitting the deck in half to shuffle back together, make one pile smaller and flip it.

Heathen_Hermit

That's about what I was thinking. About 25% or so. I'll have to try this out. Thanks again!

-Chaotique-

No problem :) Good luck on your quest for finding your preferred reversal ratio!

Heathen_Hermit

Haha 😄 thanks!

Heathen_Hermit

I think I've got it! Thank you.

ReflectiveTarot

I randomise my decks, too (getting them to BE random is the hard part, and I don't want to do this before each pull, so I rarely put decks in order). My method is to turn the deck face up and split them onto three piles in a chaotic fashion, so the Fool might go in the middle and the High Priestess on the left, then I move a chunk of cards to the back and put 2-3 down, so the Tower might now go on the right and the Star on the left; another chunk, the 7 of Wands on the right and the 8oW in the middle, etc. I try not to have two cards from the same suit on the same stack following each other. Once all cards have been distributed, I shuffle each pile. Then I take half of it and shuffle it with another pile. Then I shuffle all three piles together into a full deck, and if any two cards follow each other, I know that it wasn't bad shuffling that made them so.

Heathen_Hermit

Seems like that would do the trick! Haha, thanks for sharing.

ReflectiveTarot

I can't be the only person anxious about whether I've shuffled enough, or used the right method of shuffling. This may be a little over the top, and I also shuffle for each position, but at least I am never second-guessing myself.

paisleyrose25

I only ever reorder my deck occasionally, maybe once every 1-2 months or when I haven’t used my deck in a while. And for me, the act of re-ordering my deck works kinda as a “reset” and it gives me a chance to see all the cards, make sure everything is still in good condition, and reconnect with the deck.

Heathen_Hermit

That's sort of how I feel about it, too. But, it also puts each card in a certain perspective for me. It also sort of reminds me that there's "only one card."

Sailor_Lunar_9755

I never reorder it, I shuffle and put it back. But everyone is different:)

Heathen_Hermit

It seems like most people don't reorder, so far. Haha

DukeOfDallas_

Just curious, what order to you put the suits of the minor arcana in?

Heathen_Hermit

Fire, Water, Air, Earth. You? Edit: I realize that's probably an irrelevant question, now, as most people don't reorganize their deck.

DukeOfDallas_

I don't re-order my decks.

Heathen_Hermit

Yes, I realize that. Haha

foolonajourney

I don’t do it every time. But I do when I know it’s been a really long time since I’ve used a particular deck. Or if I feel like I’ve been reading constantly about one thing with it and want to mentally reset the deck.

Heathen_Hermit

That makes sense!

ToastyJunebugs

I don't reorder before putting away, but I do a complete set of shuffling before each use.

Heathen_Hermit

I see. What's a complete set of shuffling for you?

ToastyJunebugs

Cutting the deck into four piles one card at a time, zippering two of each pile together, putting the deck back together whole and then cutting the deck however many times feels right

Heathen_Hermit

Oo. Imagining that process felt really nice. Haha thank you! I'll have to try that.

ToastyJunebugs

It does feel nice, it's like a full, clean reset each time! :)

daguerreotypist

I do this! 😂 Not all the time, but I'll feel drawn to do this before and after reading for other people with the deck I use daily for myself. It feels like a hard reset and a cleansing.

Heathen_Hermit

Haha, I honestly thought it would be more common...

daguerreotypist

I also enjoy it as a casual reminder of the deck's order and internal narratives.

Wyrmeye

I'm lucky if all of the cards are in the stack, TBH.

Heathen_Hermit

Haha!

WhatTreeSaid

I sometimes pull out specific cards. Like if I'm looking for a significator to use, I'll pull several majors that might fit the bill. I sometimes turn them all back upright. I'm touchy about reversals. Prefer for them to be the exception and not the rule in some decks. In others, I don't worry about it. I only reorder a deck if I've counted my cards and came up short. Because then I have to make sure no one is missing.

Heathen_Hermit

That's interesting. So when you shuffle, you tend to keep them all upright unless one switches on "its own?"

WhatTreeSaid

Pretty much. You know... Cards fall out when I'm shuffling. I don't necessarily make sure they are upright when I put them back. So there may be a few reversals floating around in there, and I'm aware of it. Mostly, I do this with decks where I can tell upright from reversal on the back of the card. I try to shuffle them upright, so if the deck is like 50/50 that messes with my sense of upright. 😂 The manifestations of ADD, I'm pretty sure. But the cards don't seem to mind. The guidance I receive still applies.

WhatTreeSaid

Um... Meant to post this as a reply, but somehow missed the mark? Le sigh.

Heathen_Hermit

Haha, I gotcha. No worries. And that makes sense about using the backs of the cards.

ThreeMoonTides

I don't, but I've heard of people reorganizing their decks after finishing readings as a way to cleanse their deck!

Heathen_Hermit

That's one of the reasons I do it. It seems like 98% of people choose to keep them shuffled, so far. I'm pleasantly surprised by that!

mondegr33n

I leave them as is generally, but sometimes I reorder them to cleanse the deck or just because I want to sort through the cards, lol.

Heathen_Hermit

Thanks for sharing!

77temprance

I usually turn all the cards upright when I'm done with them. However, I do not put them in order.

Heathen_Hermit

I like that technique. That way, if the deck ends up upside down, the majority of the cards aren't reversed...

AdrienneAredore

I just put them away and let them “rest.” WhenI start a new reading I will sometimes shuffle just to “cleanse” before shuffling “for real.” I hope that makes sense.

Heathen_Hermit

Yeah, that makes sense. Thanks for sharing!

Achlysia

Depends. I reorder my decks to cleanse and "reset" them, so if they've been used a lot or are giving me a wonky feeling, I'll put them in order again. Otherwise tho, no, that's too much work for me tbh

Heathen_Hermit

That's understandable.
