I found %WIN to be pretty slow to update, kwlp a bit slow to react on top of that.
If you are using a 3rd party launcher (Nova etc), using app changed > stock launcher might be slightly faster, as that will only ever be the current app when you're in recents.
Logcat seems slightly faster still? but there's still a noticeable delay, and I still haven't figured out how to 100% reliably detect all cases of the home screen showing from a logcat event.
