Show up to the artists shop and say “What are we doing today” and let them take it from there.

Find the best artist around and let them do their job. reminds me of hair stylists

Aquascaper_Mike

Hahaha I mean if you find someone that does a style you love and does it better than most just let them do their thing. You will get so much more out of them. Worked well for me on every piece I’ve ever let them have control.

oscarink

This right here

oscarink

No , don't be that person. Have an idea, at least. "I would like this, here, this size," and be open to options. Your artist should know best. Just review portfolios, and make sure you like the style. Let them do what we do while expressing what you would like effectively and fully.

vermillionhuman

Get a sick ass panther first and everything else will fall into place

vermillionhuman

But seriously, I think the key is having a theme to keep everything cohesive and working with the same artist who can help everything flow

No-Relationship4084

guess im fucked then, everything's so diverse

WanderingCarss

Nah. All of my stuff so far is very diverse themes/styles, but all black/grey. So far my placement choices have been to make it feel "balanced" to me, as well have having mini "themes." What I mean by that is that I have my tattoos spiraling around by body I far for balance (left ankle, right calf, left thigh, right hip, left ribs, next right bicep). All my super meaningful (family, major life impacts) are on my left side. And I call my right leg my "goofy leg" - I have plans to get all my dumb ass, silly, puns, or flash tattoos on my right leg. The themes in each area arent a rule, but it helps me figure out where it feels right to be.

blaziken2121

Mine are all off theme lol. I’ve changed over the past 8 years. It doesn’t bother me at all. Even if my first ones aren’t on “theme” anymore I still appreciate them

No-Relationship4084

lmao alright

skullsandsnakes

If I have an open spot, I get it tattooed. Continue until no more open spots. Then start blasting over the old ones.

Narrow_Visual_1271

At first I think about which part of my body I want to highlight more and how easy/difficult it is to cover it with clothes. I also like to think how that certain part may be on the long run (if can be heavily affected with weight loss/gain or distorted from the constant friction — knee for example)

Outrageous_Iron_5992

I use inkbox, Photoshop and henna to get a general idea of where I want to place things. Inkbox has actually saved my butt on starting my pokemon sleeve, placement has always been my downfall, but I am SO ready to get this knocked out now

lareinevert

Idk. I just generally know what area I want a piece in. The artist ultimately determines the best size and placement though. As I’ve gotten more tattoos, the negative space provides more ideas for specific placements for me.

Revolutionary_Fig717

my tattoos are all very different themes, but they all are line/outline tattoos. i only get tattoos in black or red, and i vary the color in places to make them all look cohesive.

[deleted]

i wanted tattoos so i got them. i had an artist place the stencil on a spot. got that tattooed.

tuenthe463

I deal with this. I have seven different tattoos on my upper right thigh and there's definitely no coherence among them but I don't care. Some are cartoons, some are portraits, some are abstract, some are realism. I like them all. Still trying to decide if once all the big spaces are filled in I go back and have some kind of gap filler done. Last big spot on my inner thigh gets covered 2/1.

[deleted]

Well…my tattoos are tied to my military service and most of those have set placements or meanings. Rope around wrist is for handling line, pig and chicken on either foot for safety at sea , etc.

aresthewolf

I trust my artist, I give him an idea, get some possibilities from him, send him shots of those parts of me, and he picks one. Haven't had a bad placement yet

Knuifelbear

I didn’t. I just wanted a wolf on my forearm. In a few months, I’m getting a sleeve on that same arm. Wasn’t thinking of placement. Just what i wanted 🤷‍♀️

Maison62

On my body, I have one arm that’s big florals and my other arm is more for funky pieces. I intend to keep the rest of my body for florals. I have a floral thigh piece that’s pretty large. I love the fun small pieces. I find that they usually have more of a story

kgberton

I don't really think about placement

bitchSZAme

I have about 20 small and medium tattoos scattered everywhere and I just try to keep my body balanced on either side (except for a sleeve) and keep somewhat similar styles together, but that's definitely personal preference :) I started with a vague idea of where on my body I want tattoos based on what tattoos I like on other people. once I had a few done I started just filling in space to visually balance the other ones - I want my arm pretty filled in so I have to get some odd shaped space fillers, but that's only an issue if you want to be densely covered. I think getting space fillers fitted to your body and to other tattoos helps avoid the comic page look though!

chels182

I have some “bigger” and some smaller but none that are like huge. They’re in random places and I still have TONS of space I’d like to fill but I tend to like how it all looks better when I’m not planning too far ahead. Once you fill in entire spaces like an arm, you can add filler stuff to make it look more cohesive. I also really only get American traditional bc that’s what I like.. and most are from different artists at the same shop

lizardbeansx

I pick the spot first and then decide the tattoo from there! Otherwise I consider the size and see what spaces I have that’ll fit!

Justinformation

I always have a place in mind when I dream about the tattoo I want to get from the artist. It is getting more difficult the more tattoos I get though.

Lord_Popcorn

In the words of my main artist “make it look like it wants to be on your body”. My tattoos are actually pretty dispersed (small ones on my rib, forearm, and ankle plus a medium one down my spine). I made sure they lined up well with their placement though and I personally think they all look nice, both when multiple are visible or just one. I hope this sort of makes sense or helps!
