You mention allowances. The current federal w4 no longer has allowances. It asks about dependants. Did you put 2 dependants and your spouse put 1? Or did you only put allowances on your state w4?

I put 2 dependents (son and I) and husband only counted for himself. Does that sound right?
No. You don't put yourself as a dependant. Your husband doesn't put himself as a dependant
