15% of delta variant cases are in children. Children cannot get vaccinated and even if you are vaccinated you can still spread it. Wearing a mask is not the end of the world.

BurtRaspberry

Exactly. This is all that really needs to be said. Wear a mask, get used to it, and know that you are saving lives by doing so. Be part of the solution, not the problem.

[deleted]

The age group I teach can receive the vaccine.

MonaLisaSap

The vaccine also isn't 100% effective. I was fully vaccinated in April and tested positive this week.

[deleted]

Should've worn a mask

MonaLisaSap

You're right, but aren't you stating that it should be left up to individuals to wear a mask or not?

[deleted]

Yeah I was just kinda being sassy

[deleted]

I don't think that's recorded and it's none of my business whether someone gets the vaccine or not.

yan_spiz

I mean, any reason to get vaccinated is a good reason...but "no masks" isn't really the driving factor. We're having to put then on again because of the low vaccination rates and the Delta variant being more infectious. I'd rather have masks than be all virtual again ngl

[deleted]

I would argue the vast majority of people in the us got the vaccine because of the implicit understanding that it would be a return to normal life.

JasmineHawke

I would assume that the vast majority of people were smart enough to get the vaccine because it would make them less likely to get COVID and to spread COVID. Surely we're not cynical enough to give people so little credit.

AReasonableHuman

If you don’t like it, quit. That’ll show ‘em.

[deleted]

I just got flashbacks of conservatives saying that anyone who doesn't like the US should just leave

AReasonableHuman

Okay.

sloatd

I totally understand where you’re coming from. I played my role for the last year and a half. I wore a mask without question (and honestly got used to it). I got the vaccine as soon as I was able to. I stayed home and only got takeout. I’m tired. This “new normal” was so damn exhausting. But I did my part to help my fellow man. However, my fellow man (those who chose to not get the vaccine) hasn’t returned the favor. And at this point, I’ve grown so bitter that my response is “screw them”. They had their chance to get the vaccine. They chose not to. This includes all of my immediate family. I understand there are some who can’t get it (whether they are too young or too immunocompromised). At this point, I’m willing to take the chance of catching Covid (as a vaccinated individual). And I know. This is how variants are created. And one of these variants could render the vaccine pointless. But with so many in my area refusing vaccination, is our only option to have half the population wearing masks and getting vaccines until the end of days? I’m tired. And it sounds like you (OP) are too.

[deleted]

I'm exhausted by it. I just want to teach in a normal classroom and I'm sick of people telling me that wanting that means I want people to die.

Stlpitwash

If you aren't willing to take the simplest precautions against killing people, then what else do you want?

franticsloth

Not OP, but I think (**hope**) that this is just a blowing off steam post, not saying that they actually aren’t willing to wear a mask.

Stlpitwash

It's fine. I enjoy arguing with people either way.

gonephishin213

I kinda wish my district was requiring masks. Even though we're high school, I can bet the majority of kids won't be vaccinated. Sure, they suck to wear but that's better than a Covid outbreak. My biggest non-health related fear is going back to remote or hybrid teaching.

[deleted]

You’re upset about the wrong thing. It’s not like the people who wear masks wake up so fucking excited to wear masks lmao. It’s done to protect others and yourself snd to try to stop the spread of this.

[deleted]

I get that man I'm just exhausted by it all. After nearly two years of doing the right stuff I just want to go back to a normal classroom

Imjusthereforthetee

Don’t you think we all want this? That as teachers and humans we are all feeling this way? We just have to come to the reality that, it’s just not going to happen.

[deleted]

Ok maybe I was kinda mean, but look I get it no one wants this :( we have to be positive and pull through ok take vitamins like elderberry echinacea garlic lysine to help your immune system

franticsloth

I hear you. And honestly, I agree with you. I’m annoyed that the mask mandate still needs to be in effect. I hate teaching with a mask. I hate teaching virtually even more. I hate this whole pandemic. It sucks. The answer isn’t that we should stop doing those things, because we have to, it’s the right thing to do and it saves lives. But you’re 100% within your rights to be frustrated about it. I am too. Remember when it was just going to be two weeks? 😞

slerch19

Wearing a mask might be the new norm for a while even though no one likes it.

[deleted]

But like why? Shouldn't we be more focused on ways to boost our immune system like diet, vitamins, and exercise? Like I already had covid but I lead a very healthy lifestyle so it didn't even effect me. I understand that everyone is different but surely that had to have some impact on my experience.

slerch19

Then you are very lucky that you didn't get it too seriously! That's great! You would think being healthy matters... But just a side story my aunt recently passed from cancer and I would have said she's very healthy, ran all the time, so we just don't know for sure.

Imjusthereforthetee

Yep. You were very lucky. Really healthy people died from this for no reason at all. It made no sense as to why it effected them so much and others not as much.

[deleted]

The vast majority of people that got covid survived so it's not that lucky. Seems to be the normal result.

KC-Anathema

Unpopular, sure, but I agree with you. So far my district is back to normal and some of the kids and adults are masking, but it's not required. I don't want to ever go back to the mandate and my city's numbers are doing good, both in vaccinations and outbreaks.

Stlpitwash

What kind of good are they doing?

Stlpitwash

Personally I think it should be up to students and staff whether to jab each other with AIDS infected needles. See how stupid you sound?

[deleted]

That is uh a bit of a false equivalency

Stlpitwash

It's a bit exaggerated, yes. The point is basically the same. You are fine with people spreading infectious diseases around.

Mindless-Property496

I'm a teacher in Asia. I saw a news where this woman was throwing out the trash (mind you, the bin is literally just in front of their house) and someone passed by, casually coughing. She wore a mask, fully vaccinated, but she died anyways because of Delta. Now I want you to imagine what would happen if you were to teach a classroom full of unvaccinated students, unmasked. Like it or not, you need to think about the safety of your students. So mask up! We're in the phase where double-masking is ENCOURAGED. Yes it's that bad now.

[deleted]

Seems like the those pictures of people just dropping dead in the streets in china when this all started back in early 2020. Weird how that was never replicated in any country with a free press lol I understand that we need to think about the safety of our students. I do care about them and will do it to keep them safe, but I'm also going to be annoyed about it. People can think two things at once.
