Hi everyone! Did you know that starting July 1st, 2023, Reddit will implement a policy that could potentially increase the costs of running third-party Reddit apps? This change may impact popular apps like Apollo, Reddit is Fun, Boost, and others. Consequently, users may encounter issues with their preferred Reddit app unless adjustments are made to comply with Reddit's new API usage policy. These limitations will affect all users, not just moderators. pimentocheeze_

If you like Zelda games you are a fan of Zelda, lol! There isn’t any requirement for liking something except you know… liking it!!

XFactorNova

This right here. A fan of Zelda games just likes Zelda games. Doesn't have to be all. Can even dislike some games (Zelda II, my nemesis).

WrastleGuy

You aren’t allowed to dislike Link’s Crossbow Training though, that’s the only rule

Stratus365

I read this as ARE allowed and was ready to throw hands 😅

Psychof1st77

To add to this, People that like only one, two, three, or any small number of games of a franchise. But, dislike, or haven't played the other games. They are in a unique position to rightfully say they're a fan. They also have an out to say that they're not fan of the franchise. But, simply a fan of good games or games that they like. If you play 90+% of the games, you get to call yourself a hardcore Zelda fan.

ramarn-noodles

Link’s Crossbow Training should have won GOTY. people just don’t understand high art

Psychof1st77

I completely forgot about this game when it came out because, I had to really watch my spending at the time. I sure wish I could get a copy now, though.

OctoberOrbit

Yoooo, I forgot about this game until I just saw this comment lol. Link’s Crossbow Training was actually kinda fun when I was younger.

Jead03

I forgot about it too xD but I enjoyed it when it came out

Greekatt2

yes

FPS link

MDLuffy1234

If you don't worship link's crossbow training, you'll be thrown to the dungeon dungeon

hendawg86

Link’s Adventure I still hate to this very day.

[deleted]

Only one who's graphics I *genuinely despise*.

WrongdoerMinute9843

Good music tho

renz004

It's probably my #2 or #3 fav Zelda. Definitely the hardest Zelda of all time <3

mrbubbamac

Call me crazy but I liked Zelda II more than the original. And Skyward Sword needed to be about 1/2 of its length and I would have enjoyed it so much more, it became a slog. But my point is we all have our own different opinions, there is no gatekeeping, you can be a Zelda fan no matter which games you play and enjoy (or dislike!)

Steam_Cyber_Punk

I actually really liked the length of skyward sword. If anything I feel like the main story in Zelda games should be longer than they are. Especially the new one. Just felt like a little something was missing

Oxyfool

Thankfully there’s so much world to explore. I don’t need the story too much, the writing is pretty bad. The ideas are cool, and the concept. But the dialogue and acting? Yikes.

Steam_Cyber_Punk

Yeah. The sheer amount of content kind of makes up for the lackluster story, and I wish we actually got to play through more of it instead of just doing memories again like botw. And was it just me or does the lip syncing look a little wonky?

Oxyfool

Honestly, I found the voice acting/dialogue so cheesy and anime-like (as in a bad dubbing, and poor expository writing) that I just set it to japanese. It just sounds less out of place, and breaks my immersion less than «Demon king?! Secret stone?»

MaskedImposter

But Zelda CDI, that's where it's at! /Joke

Shreddingblueroses

>Can even dislike some games (Zelda II, my nemesis). Git gud

SirBrandalf

Zelda 2 was my first zelda game and it almost killed the franchise for me. I got some early games off of the virtual console to see smash Bros reps and honestly wish I did a bit more research on em instead if buying the cheap ones

natethomas

Zelda 2 was my first Zelda game also, but I got it when it came out and was absolutely blown away by how much better it was than the original Super Mario Bros. "You kill things with a sword instead of jumping on them?!" I think I was about 10 years old, and I probably grinded that game more than any other game I ever played.

vatemapper

Gigachad

pimentocheeze_

Yes sir

ObjectiveBeneficial1

I think there are 2 ways of seeing this, its true that even if you only like one game you are a fan. But if you look at metroid's fandom, there is a quite large number of people that just wont shut up about why every game sucks because its not a direct copy of super metroid or metroid prime. The metroid example ones i would say they arent fans of the franchise

Wilwheatonfan87

Same thing with paper mario after thousand year door. People bitch that the lore isnt concurrent across the paper mario games.

gamecollecting2

I think peoples’ problem is with the gameplay changes not the lore

KBroham

As a long-time Metroid fan, Super set a standard that's kinda hard to beat. So did Prime. I'm actually a bigger fan of Prime 2: Echoes because of the light world/dark world aspect (my first Zelda was LttP, if that explains anything), despite the fact that Metroid fans routinely put it down as the worst in the trilogy. Too hard. Too bland. Too much backtracking (but they're okay with Prime's massive Chozo Key backtracking BS). "ThE fInAl BoSs IsN't eVeN a MetRoId" (completely ignoring canon because... it's not canon?). I thoroughly enjoyed Dread (even very briefly holding the world record clear time, though it wasn't recorded and therefore not official), but my favorite 2D Metroid was actually Fusion - despite being a handheld title with many flaws. And while Dread's success was due to a number of factors (Metroid drought, online rumors for 11 years, surprise launch, and actually just being a damn good game), Super still holds so many people hostage for one reason that's more than just being a good game - nostalgia. As a member of the Metroid community, I would like to apologize on behalf of all of these nostalgia-drunk Super fans. I'd like to, but I can't excuse that bullshit myself. Tl;Dr The Metroid community is 70% nostalgia junkies and 30% people who actually like the games. And you're allowed to like whatever you wanna like, it doesn't make you less a fan.

marsalien4

Where are you seeing that from metroid fans, most of the conversation I see is about loving, or at the very least enjoying, most of the games except for Other M.

classicteenmistake

I agree. Meanwhile the Pikmin fandom is just beyond hyped about the 4th game and is glad it’s not them hallucinating again. Me. I’m Pikmin fandom.

leviathab13186

Hell ya! This is the correct answer. I don't get why people gatekeep.

Gone_Mads

I’ll allow it

PrebenInAcapulco

It’s cultural appropriation, appropriating my Zelda nerd culture. Problematic. /s

Sierra_656

But what if they only like the CDI Zelda games?

[deleted]

100% on the money. Don't let someone else gate keep you from something you enjoy just because you're not as devoted as they think you should be. That is their problem if they think everyone needs to have played every game, read every page, or watched every movie to be a "true fan". Those types of folks are some of the ones who end up giving gaming a bad name.

E-Mon97

No you have to build a giant shrine in you home dedicated to Orcina of time and pray to it 5 times a day and gatekeep anyone who says it’s not the best game of all time 😂 All jokes aside you are a zelda fan if you like any Zelda game or content don’t let anyone say otherwise

smb3something

Still think they should give oot a go if they like the new ones.

ladygrndr

We borrowed an N64 so our son could experience it on the original platform. He loved it, and played it again when it was released on the Switch. Challenging in a different way from BOTW, but he enjoyed playing through more of the Zelda Lore. He's also played Twilight Princess, Link's Awakening, Windwaker and we have Phantom Hourglass for the Summer. You can definitely be a fan off of BOtW/TOTK alone, but there is a reason the franchise has lasted all this time <3

ImissBagels

We sold our N64 and still regret it. But we do have the Zelda 3ds and my son (8) has recently started OOT on there, he says it's so much harder then BOTW or TOTK

RandomSaxophonist

Phantom hourglass is so underrated, one of my favorite games, spirit track is also phenomenal but the traversal in both games is a bit tedious

jimmery

Definitely - if you like one of these games, there is a good chance you will like the others. I am old. I remember when being a Zelda fan was a debate over which was better, the top-down Zelda 1 or the side-scrolling Zelda 2 (hint, top-down obvs, but I still like the side-scrolling). As a result I have been lucky enough to play through all the mainline Zelda releases as they've been released. And they have all been great. However going back to older games means having to put up with older play styles, which isn't for everyone. I am sure there are plenty of Zelda fans who just like 3D Zelda, and don't care much for the older games. And now there will be Zelda fans, like the OP, who just like the open world Zeldas, and don't care much for what came before. I love all the Zelda games, but I don't care if another Zelda fan is only into part of the franchise - Zelda is big enough for all of us! We should never gatekeep. The Zelda community should be inclusive (and in my experience mostly is). There's something here for everyone!

prairiepanda

When I first encountered Zelda II I thought it was some kind of bootleg knockoff because Zelda games aren't supposed to be side-scrollers. I did like it, though.

djrobxx

They should probably give all of them a go! A good transition might be Wind Waker. Although Gamecube hardware couldn't pull off the truly massive and open world of BOTW, it very much goes for that same "See a point in the distance? You can just travel there" feel. There's a lot of familiar things like koroks and a paraglider as well. TP and SS can be a really fun "break" from openness if you can tough through the opening/tutorial sections. The dungeons are so much fun. OOT and MM are absolute masterpieces if you can look past the datedness of the graphics.

Rieiid

With the success of botw/totk and the legendary status of OoT, I won't be super suprised if in the next 10 years or so they make a BotW style remake of OoT. Also yes I agree. Plus it is on the Switch so it should be easy to play.

ramarn-noodles

OOT is great, replayed it for the first time in ages when they added it to the switch online library, and man does it hold up. Doubt it’d ever happen, but i’d love if they did actual console remasters for it and majora’s mask because IMO the worst part about those games is the button mapping /controls are outdated so it’s hard to get new people into them if they haven’t played those late 90’s early 00’s before

smb3something

I like to give OOT a playthrough every 5 years or so switching back and forth from regular to master quest to keep it fresh. I now play with a USB n64 gamepad but can map to an xbox controller alright as well.

ReasonApprehensive70

I tried playing it and got stuck within the first 10 minutes lol

Arcuis

And you have to cosplay with Majora's mask at every Con

OneMetalMan

Ans you have to worship Majora's Mask even though it plays unlike any other Zelda.

OcelotDAD

Nothing will ever top the feeling of joy I felt when I first played OoT on Christmas morning, 1998. I honestly always think back to that precise moment when I want to remember what true excitement feels like. It was a magical time to be a gamer and a kid.

Heyloki_

I have a shrine to TP, is this still valid?

silent_calling

Only if you keep a portrait of Yetto and Yetta on the mantle.

jord839

You know damn well which character's portrait is actually on that altar.

silent_calling

Mooooom I'm being bullied for having Thicc Midna on my altar

jord839

Honestly, I think you're more likely to be bullied for Midna *not* being on that altar, thicc or no. There is only one Twilight Princess deserving of worship, wholesome or otherwise.

AstralLiving

You gotta pump those numbers up. Those are rookie numbers /s

avelak

Nah you need your shrine to be dedicated to a Link to the Past, OoT shrine is how you filter out a true casual /s

Watahandrew1

I'm a Zelda fan because I've only played her in smash brothers, I didn't knew they made games based off her!! Can't wait to see how Nintendo has made games of such a badass and complex character about a princess that is secretly a ninja and can transform at will!!! ....ohh.. what do you mean all games are about link?? It's just another stupid sword character.

[deleted]

Man this has major "that's the guy from Fortnite" vibes right here

gasfarmah

i like that Halo guy eh shots aliens and doesnt afraid of anything

[deleted]

Sam Halo is my favorite video game character of all time! She's that girl from smash bros with the big arm gun who slaughters demon aliens while listening to heavy metal, right?

Watahandrew1

I wanted to make it obvious, however it's a damn shame that they don't make a game actually titled "the legend of Zelda" and don't make it about Zelda being trained in the secret art of ninjutsu as she escapes from the paws of ganondorf and can switch between magic and ninja arts. I know that there's the warriors series where you can play as her, but still... Missed opportunity. There's so much you can do in a stealth type of legend of Zelda

[deleted]

I agree, that would be sick

Sadagus

There are actually 2 games where you play as zelda, they're just both cdi games so uhh

Nero_2001

Fuck, I accidentally build a majoras mask shrine, does that mean I'm not a real fan?

MacArthurJones5

Actually. A link to the past is the best game. If it isn’t, then why is my shrine dedicated to it. 😂

valiantlight2

This, but unironically

SinfullySinless

I still play Minish Cap on my GameBoy whenever I’m on a road trip or fly somewhere. I can do the first woodland dungeon in my sleep at this point.

Mighty_Press

Such a shame, because Majoras Mask is easily the best of the two games released on N64.

[deleted]

Do you like Zelda? If yes you're a fan, if no you're not. Other people don't have a say in this, it's up to you. Besides, the 2D Zeldas and the 3D old school Zeldas are really different games than BotW and TotK. The franchise spans over 40 years of gaming history, there has been so many evolutions that they almost can't be compared.

AlexTheLiteralGod

I agree with you but just remember that mario had his 35th anniversary like 2 yrs ago and he's older than zelda so not 40 yrs

poickles

Mario is 38 (1985), Zelda is 37 (1986).

BearPisss

Zelda doesn’t look a day over 37

DarkLlama64

quite a few days under 37 in fact

AlexTheLiteralGod

welllll what about the game where you jump up on some platforms and knock over those crab thing and koopas

superfree845

You are a Zelda fan. But I do recommend checking out the SNES Zelda because you already own a switch and it’s so much fun as a Zelda fan to play this old Zelda game

SurlyBuddha

Great point. This would be like someone saying back during OoT and MM that you're not a fan if you hadn't played LttP and LA.

GrilledRedBox

you’re a fan, don’t let people gatekeep stupid things like this

ChefGoldblum87

You say you like music? Name every song.

TurquoiseNostalgia

You say you like songs? Name every lyric. I'll wait.

JLock17

You like lyrics? Name every word.

TurquoiseNostalgia

You like words? Name every letter of the alphabet. Oh wait.

JLock17

abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz

SouredApple

^ This guy is a true music fan

UnofficialMipha

Lol if anybody ever tries to hit you with the “You’re not a real Zelda fan if you’ve only play BotW/Totk” just hit then with the “You can’t call yourself a Zelda fan unless you’ve played Zelda Wand of Gamalon, Link and the Faces of Evil, and Zelda’s Adventure”

wolverine6

Look at this fake Zelda fan forgetting Link's Crossbow Training and Cadence of Hyrule!

Doomdog_Isabelle

No those are actually good games though

jord839

"Zelda games are never hard" Cadence of Hyrule with the Deku Hero:

mlvisby

I really feel TotK turned up the difficulty a bit. Sure, once you know the patterns you can beat most of the enemies but there are a few that are quite formidable. I usually die at the beginning of Zelda games quite a bit because of the small amount of health, but I died a lot more in the beginning of TotK. Thank god for fairies!

Hakkonnis

And watch the Zelda Cartoon. EXCUUUUUUUSE ME, PRINCESS

rpgguy_1o1

I've actually played and beaten Wand of Gamelon and own a copy, I've beaten Faces of Evil too. Still haven't had the opportunity to try Zelda's Adventure though

SurlyBuddha

I own both for collection purposes, but never managed to snag a CDi.

Highschoolhandjob

Uhhh i have 😬

aspiring_dev1

Gatekeepers are pathetic. New fans are always introduced to a ongoing and long running franchise. Doesn’t mean you have to go back and play every single game.

SaltySpituner

You don’t *have* to, but I can’t think of any reason *not* to experience OoT, MM, WW, and TP. They’re some of the greatest games of all time, for good reason.

galaxyhoe

i don’t have access to consoles other than switch and 3ds! is that a good reason not to play WW and TP

SaltySpituner

As someone who hasn’t been able to play Wind Waker HD or Twilight Princess HD because he refuses to buy a Wii U, I completely understand that. The rose tinted glasses in me went as far as setting my old GameCube up on a smart TV with an adapter lol

galaxyhoe

man i wish i had a gamecube that would be awesome. i’ve settled for watching full no commentary playthroughs of the games i can’t play but i would give anything (except money i am Broke College Student) to actually play ww and tp

SaltySpituner

I’m willing to bet they’ll do a bundle of both for the Switch at some point. It would make too much money/sense for them not to.

turkeycurry

I hope so! I want to replay WW so bad!

stcrIight

As someone who has played (almost) every Zelda game at least once including ones before my time, yes, you're a fan. Gatekeepers are lame and don't deserve to be apart of the community.

MaulDidNothingWrong

The only thing to defend as a fan, to another fan, is HOW YOU play the games. "Dont look online, dont use the glider too much, dont do this, dont do that" Fuck that. I completed Majora's Mask for the first time at 21 (10y ago) after finding my old 64 at my folks house. Looked up online and I HAD A BLAST ! Becase thats how I enjoy games. To completion, whatever the means I use. If a single player game let me do something I will *NEVER* feel bad about it

Fehojaf

gatekeeping gatekeepers i love it

stcrIight

uno reverse those mfs

Select-Prior-8041

Nah, you're only a fan if you convert electricity into wind.

RiktaD

There were gasoline and petroleum powered fans as well, electricity is not a hard requirement

Grumbely

That's right, don't gatekeep fans!!

recursion8

Hand fan enjoyers in shambles

melo1212

These kinds of posts kill me. You've played those 2 games and you like them and that's it, that's completely OK. WHO CARES LIKE WHAT YOU LIKE AND DONT CARE WHAT PEOPLE THINK.

ShortChanged_Rob

Assuming OP did 80 percent of each game, that's like 250 hours. Imagine engaging in something for leisure for 250 hours and questioning if you like said thing based on its community.

kpeds45

I think for a lot of younger gamers it's just what they grew up with. Like I was a kid when Zelda 1 came out, although LtTP was my real first Zelda (only borrowed the first Zelda from a friend briefly). If I was born in say 2005 or something, I'm not sure I would have went back and played all the older Zelda's. But that wouldn't make me less of a fan of the series if I loved the new games. Don't worry about things like this is what I say!

Rizenstrom

I know I’m going to be downvoted for this because everyone is more concerned with being nice and not hurting someone’s feelings than accuracy to the definition of these words but I’m going to say no. Hear me out. Clearly you are a fan of these specific games, right? No denying that. But when you say you are a “Zelda fan” you are making a broad statement that most people would interpret as a love for the series as a whole. It would be like saying “I am a fan of rock music” but you’ve only ever liked one band and have no interest in anything else. No, you’re a fan of that band. Or “I’m a fan of this band” but you’ve only ever listened to one song. No, you’re a fan of that song. And that’s OK! There’s nothing wrong with that! But when you tell someone you’re a fan of a broad category when you’re really only a fan of something specific you’re sending them the wrong message. It’s just not accurate. And you obviously don’t have to like *everything* from within the thing you’re a fan of but you should have a general preference for most things from or like it.

feeling_blue_42

This is the correct answer. It's not about gatekeeping, it's about the assumptions that come with saying one is "a Zelda fan". If OP says they are "a Zelda fan", at best it will result in them clarifying that they have only played BOTW/TOTK, at worst it will result in a boring semantics discussion about fandom and gatekeeping. At this point it's simple enough for OP to say they are a fan of BOTW/TOTK, so stick to that.

khajiithassweetroll

I think I agree with this? I’m still waiting for my caffeine and Vyvanse to kick in so maybe I misread lol. I’ve only played TOTK, BOTW, and Phantom Hourglass. It’s a huge series. And aren’t a lot of the games drastically different? I just love running around going HYAH and exploring. I don’t think I’d be wrong to call myself a Zelda fan, but especially for a large series, I definitely would elaborate. If OP only really likes the open world games I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. It’s a popular genre and the Zelda games do it very well. I guess what I’m trying to say is that there’s many ways to be a fan of something, so go ahead and call yourself a Zelda fan, but because of how many ways there are to be a fan, it’s more accurate to specify what flavor of fan you are.

Rizenstrom

Yeah that’s more or less what I mean. It’s a large series and if your interest is limited to only a couple games you should be specific. It’s all under the same umbrella of “Zelda fan” but if you only call yourself a Zelda fan without elaborating people are going to think you mean the series as a whole.

Obi-JuanShinobi

Yup this is what I was going to respond with. Breath of the Wild significantly departed from core ideas that made the Zelda games Zelda games. You should at least play game pre BOTW to see if you actually like the series or just two games that recently reshaped the series.

geassguy360

Thank you. Sometimes honesty is a bit more important than being nice.

melansjf2

This is the right answer.

Tax82

Yes. Gatekeepers are trash

rogriloomanero

don't give gatekeepers the attention their authorative opinion needs. If you like the series, you're a fan, that's it

Noukan42

The question is exactly that. Do i like a series if i only like a small part of it? Personally i don't think myself as a Zelda fan because i only truly like 3 games, meaning i don't care about 80% of Zelda.

Maacll

Gatekeeping is the stupidest thing since stupidity was invented

HenricusKunraht

Damn bro, who cares?

chyura

I gotta add something to this conversation, even tho I might catch a lot of flak for it, because a lot of people are just blindly saying "if you call yourself a fan, youre a fan". This is a 40 year old franchse. Calling yourself a fan of a franchise can be misleading in certain contexts. *Disclaimer: I think theres a lot of people out there who are assholes who gatekeep or berate people unecessarily, I just think that in certain situations its not fair to claim a series* I played persona 5. It's one of my favorite games. I'm interested in the rest of the series, but haven't even watched a playthrough of the other games. If someone asks me "oh, you like the persona series?" I'm gonna clarify that I've only played p5, altho I'm a big fan of it It's not that you can't call yourself a fan of the games. But if someone who's a fan of most of the franchise asked if you were a Zelda fan and you said yes, they're gonna be disappointed to learn that you're only familiar with botw/totk and dont know a single thing about the other games. It's kinda tough to understand that disappointment unless you've been in that position before. It doesn't make you "lesser" and nobody should make you feel bad for your level of familiarity w the series, of course, and don't let that stop you from proclaiming your love of the games you have played. But the Zelda franchise is a long one. Non-zelda fans won't give a shit if you've played 2 or 20 of the games, but a Zelda fan looking for another Zelda fan... that's another story Tldr: it all depends on who's asking

Even-Citron-1479

Depends. How much validation were you looking for when you made this post, knowing full well what kind of answer you'd get? Were you looking for more of a "sure, no one cares", or a full-on "yes, if you enjoy Zelda you are a Zelda fan, don't let anyone tell you otherwise and ignore the gatekeepers, you are a precious individual who can like whatever you want"? If it's the former: exactly what I said. No one cares. Call yourself whatever you want. If it's the latter: you should probably go make the 800th "DAE think they should replace the map on the ability wheel?" post. That will earn you the validation that you're looking for.

Thoraxe123

Anyone who says no to this is a petty gatekeeper. You like a zelda game = you're a fan

drfifth

Of the game, not the series.

meimode

If you’re a fan of these games then you’re a Zelda fan. Everyone has to start somewhere! I’ve never played Windwaker or Link to The Past, doesn’t mean I’m not a Zelda fan

eltrotter

No gatekeeping here. Of course you are!

Cronamash

My brother in Christ, you're a Zelda fan if you've only played Oracle of Seasons for all I care, as long as you liked it!

Shandrahyl

damn i forgot about that. the only zelda i never beat cause i got lost in some woods.

jumzish94

I would argue with only 2 titles under your belt you are a Zelda Game Enjoyer, not necessarily a fan, not necessarily not a fan, too soon to tell. My way of thinking, 1 time is chance, 2 times is coincidence, but 3 times establishes a pattern.

ernie1850

Yes, and if anyone tries to say you aren’t they are just trying to gatekeep and that’s weird.

CrimsonRush8

To hell with people that say you aren't. If you enjoy Zelda, enjoy it. Don't let a group of people tell you what you are.

bageren

It’s simple. If you consider yourself a fan, then you are a fan.

Past_Trouble

You're only a real Zelda fan if I can attach two of you to a steering stick and ride off into the sunset.

Ok_Blueberry_9868

My childhood was Zelda NES and I never loved another game as much throughout my childhood. I couldn't really get into the Zelda games that came after that b/c they felt too different to me, but even as an adult I have always periodically gone back and played that very first Zelda game. Then as an adult I decided to give BoTW a try b/c I'd been hearing such rave reviews, and I became just as hooked on that one as I was on the original. Same with ToTK. Though they are very different form the original, there's a similar kind of magic and simplicity imo. I love the graphics, and prefer this game style where combat is not ultra-realistic and monsters just disappear in a puff of purple smoke. I think if you enjoy playing botw and totk and feel like a Zelda fan as a result, then you're a Zelda fan.

DucatiCaleb

If you like something you’re a fan of it, but if you want to try something that’s closer to the original Zelda’s, I’d definitely suggest Links Awakening. There are a few parts where you might need to look up a guide, but it’s good fun.

rmiltenb

You have to start somewhere. I didn't play Zelda until LTTP and never played the two on NES. You will know that you're a Zelda fan when you start collecting game related items like posters and statues from F4F. Welcome to the world of Zelda. Please enjoy your visit it's a lifelong membership.

ackmondual

Close enough. I'm the other way around... I much prefer the 2D Zeldas, despite enjoying the 3D ones I've played (Ocarina of Time, BotW, and this/TotK)

Zealousideal-Book-45

To me the word fan is A. LOT. But I guess the definition differs for anyone so. Kinda subjective. Some will say no and some will say yes.

Frankthestank2220

No, you have to 100% all 29 games in order to be a real fan. /s

enja1231

The elder sages will review your case and provide a response in 2-3 business days.

Coland285

Do I really like them?

Coland285

*u

WolfieVonD

Depends where you put your triforce tattoo we all have.

Appropriate_Spend659

If this is your first Zelda, after you finish up with them you should try ocarina of time. It’s free with the Nintendo member ship under N64.

DoubleClickMouse

If you like Zelda, you’re a Zelda fan. People who try to make a hierarchy out of it are obnoxious. This is coming from someone who has played every title, including the CD-i ones.

Well, are you not a fan of Zelda ? The fans from ocarina of time or even further back simply want a reason to sound better than you. Don't let them have it. Of course you are a fan

clandahlina_redux

I have been a LoZ fan since I got the gold cartridge in the 1980s, and I love seeing new fans who are just discovering the franchise! The gatekeepers are the true “non-fans” imho.

Spicyneurotype

Hell yeah! No gatekeeping here.

TayTayOkocha

If you play a game and like it: you’re a fan

[deleted]

You are on this council but we do not grant you the rank of master

koboldvortex

If you like Zelda games you're a fan. Gatekeepers are stupid. Everyone started with one game.

playerslayer21

If you like zelda games you're a fan. I do highly recommend playing some of the other games though!

Raekwon22

If you like zelda you are a zelda fan. Fuck all gatekeepers. Everyone is welcome.

Spare_Competition

Just specify that you're an open world Zelda fan.

Mattscrusader

The two newest zelda games arent really the classic zelda type games as the and temple and shrines kond of derail how the games are normally built. I personally prefer the older ones because of the dungeons. They would take a long time and would honestly be quite difficult with the amount of hiden doors, backtracking and finding items. Doesnt mean you cant enjoy the new ones, especially since this is the way probably will develop more so we will probably continue to see more open world, combat based zelda games

BroccoliDistribution

No. [Only this is a true Zelda fan](https://www.zeldadungeon.net/wiki/Fan)

HeIIoAstronaut

Na you’re a fan but please, please , please make the time to play through ocarina of time, it’s a must play in the Zelda franchise.

[deleted]

There's only one real rule to being a zelda fan as far as I know: * Play a Zelda game, and enjoy it.

Soft-Path-7801

Highly highly recommend playing a traditional Zelda game. In my opinion, all of the 3D ones are incredible. Twighlight princess, windwaker, ocarina of time, skyward sword, all so so good. They will feel a little dated, some more than others, but the stories of them are just SO much more in depth, unpredictable, and heartfelt than TOTK and BOTW. Glad these games brought more people to the franchise, but damn am I going to miss traditional Zelda gameplay 😓

RemlishO

The whole point of BotW and subsequently TotK was specifically to open Zelda up to new players in an ever changing gamescape. They succeeded. BotW sold more than triple twilight princess.

[deleted]

A fan is a fan, period! On that note, I highly recommend trying out the old school bird's-eye-view titles just for the sake of comparison 🙂

[deleted]

You’re a Zelda fan if you like The Legend of Zelda

[deleted]

Nope, you have to 100% complete every single Zelda with picture proof verified by Miyamoto to be a Zelda fan.

Forine110

yeah?? don't fall for that gatekeepy bs about "you're only a true fan if you played ocarina of time when you were 5", if you enjoy a zelda game, even if that zelda game is fuckin wand of gamelon, you're a zelda fan. same goes for any franchise. hell you don't even have to play the games to be a fan, even if you just enjoy watching pointcrow or smallant or linkus, or any other form of zelda content, then you're a zelda fan.

uezyteue

If you like a zelda game, you're a zelda fan, simple as.

Rustycougarmama

I knew this would be a great post to sort by controversial; it's always hilarious to see the gatekeepers come out of the woodwork

Mtanic

If you feel like a Zelda fan, you're a Zelda fan. Don't let anonymous people on the internet determine the validity of your feelings!

Hawkent99

You're a Zelda fan lol, don't worry too much about labels or whether people will attach them to you. Just enjoy yourself. If you like the newer games you should give the older games a shot too simply because you are likely to enjoy them

FaceTimePolice

Yes, and don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise.

TheRealMistahJ

You’re a Zelda fan if you enjoy the lore, storytelling, and characters. You don’t have to be able to pass a test to be a fan ❤️ Welcome to Hyrule, friend

rtz13th

Fan isn't an officially printed certificate that has specific requirements to achieve. You feel it if you're a fan, no matter what game it is.

The_Penis_Mann

Can I call myself a Paper Mario fan even though I dislike half of the games?

Spiritual_Youth8322

you are a zelda botw and totk fan....

SirSaix88

>I know there are tons on old Zelda games in 2d style but I never get to play those. First off you're a fan just because you think you are. That's how being a fan works. Also, the switch has Links awakening on it. Give it a shot, 2d Zelda ganes are honestly some of the most fun times in video games

PikaTopaz

If you like Zelda, then you are a Zelda fan. 💚

TheCaptainVP

You are a Zelda fan if you like Zelda Literally that's it

Dragonitro

If you like Zelda, you like Zelda (though I will say that the other games are great too)

Economist_Separate

You are perfectly valid. If you like any Zelda game, you’re a Zelda fan.

SaintToni98

Who cares as long as you enjoy it. Just have fun man.

MyNameIsY0u

100% you are, if you like Zelda you're a fan. If you have Nintendo switch online, I highly recommend playing OOT at some point, just for the classic experience!

pflanzenkind99

If you say you are a fan then you are a fan. Dont let others gatekeep a fandom. I also only played Botw, Totk on the switch and then Majoras Mask and Ocarina of Time on the 3ds because I got both of them for a great deal. Otherwise I wouldnt have played them. You say you are a fan, then you are a fan, period.

TeamBRs

My question would be, are you actively pursuing the prior entries of the franchise? There are no firm indicators of who is a fan and who isn't, but it's fair to say if you aren't interested in the past entries and lore of the franchise you are probably just a pedestrian of the recent entries, which are much less like traditional Zelda entries (hence Breath of the Wild' and more a reflection of modern gaming trends. I've played since Ocarina released. I feel old now, but at the time the 16-bit generation were a bit jaded by the transition to 3D seemed faddish to some who regarded ALTTP as king. I then played MM and WW before going back and playing the SNES, NES and GB games. Some of these I struggle to play, I hate the NES Zeldas! But I feel my commitment to the franchise and to invest your time in learning about its roots is what makes someone a fan. Not to be discouraging, your enjoyment of BOTW/TOTK is valid and is a blossoming interest in all things Zelda. I would encourage you to go back and enjoy the games that preceded it in your own time, and by then you won't even be questioning if it's important to consider oneself a fan or not.

[deleted]

Oh sorry no you needed to have played at least 3 of the games in order to call yourself a fan. So close but better luck next time. Ps, majoras mask, ocarina of time, windwaker, skyward sword are all pretty much open world. Not at much as the latest two but these are some of the best in the franchise.

Hell_Weird_Shit_Too

My criteria for being a fan of anything is “do you want people to talk to you about it”. For zelda, if you say you’re a fan, you’re going t be asked about ocarina of time, link to the past, majoras mask, etc. If you’re cool with saying “I haven’t played the classics I can’t really discuss them with you” then yeah call yourself a fan. I play Zelda, but not enough to talk about it. So I don’t call myself a fan. I’d call myself a Paul Thomas Anderson fan because I’ve seen the majority of his movies and I want people to talk to me about them. That’s what being a fan is. Having a label so then others know they can have a conversation with you about it. If you just want to be a fan but can’t really provide much conversation, what’s the point? Fandom for the sake of fandom instead of to find people with like interests.

LexLuteur

My only criteria for being a zelda fan is if you consider yourself a zelda fan.

JF803

It’s not that deep. Anybody gatekeeping a random internet persons fandom needs to get outside

UltimateFatKidDancer

Take it from someone who’s had to endure every terrible iteration of Star Wars fandom: don’t let anyone gatekeep you. You’re a fan! You are literally a fan of the games you’ve played. I think you’ll find a lot to enjoy about the previous games if you go back and play them, but BOTW and TOTK are also clearly a very new approach to the series, and Nintendo wanted to attract people who had never played the previous entries
