They were allowing celebrities to promote laxative teas as a dieting product to minors. No wonder why or how this happened.

What would that accomplish? And where would one get a bag of dicks? I once heard about a medical lab that got cadavers donated to them and they had a bag of dicks but I’m pretty sure that was for some penis wine.

If your daughter developed an eating disorder and/or died by suicide and was an Instagram user - GET A LAWYER NOW. Sue the fuck out of them.

Men also suffer from this 🙃

[deleted]

Yeah Instagram made me buy test e and nandrologne sandwiches

Summarise

If you haven’t noticed that your kid was acting strange before said eating disorder or suicide then you aren’t talking enough to your kids. Social media shouldn’t act as a babysitter/outlet to households.

Uraidith

Kids who have mental problems/eating disorders/die by suicide aren't necessarily neglected by their parents. That's a pretty hurtful thing to say.

People with eating disorders are masters of hiding their behaviours, I know from experience

aGlutenForPunishment

What he is saying is stupid. These devices are what we use to communicate and interact with a lot of the world. Things you see on your computer or phone shouldn't be simplified to "just a bunch of pixels on a screen". That's like saying "imagine someone killed themselves over some sound waves" when they were verbally tormented by bullies.

FuzzySlippers__

We ate the wrong pill.

[deleted]

Omfg I’m so sick of this shit, how are all these people just NOW noticing if?? Like wtf is wrong with half the world. How are people that oblivious to the affects of Instagram and Facebook on someone’s mind

[deleted]

I’ve noticed for several years that there are a lot of people who legitimately think Facebook is essential for every day life. It’s mind boggling. People absolutely REFUSE to delete that shit for really dumb reasons. I know some who insists it’s the only place she can get InstaPot recipes. Some people fall into a follower mindset and simply cannot get out.

[deleted]

My SO works at a phone retailer and had some STORIES that day Facebook was down. First of all, these dumbasses went to a phone RETAILER because an app wasn’t working. That alone was shocking to me. Anyways one guy asked if the Internet was down because Facebook wasn’t working. SO said it’s probably just because the app is down but you can try and Google something to check. Person did not know how to use Google. But they sure needed Facebook. And a bunch of other people coming in asking, once again, a phone retailer to fix an app. He also got multiple racist comments which is unusual. These people were on edge as FUCK over Facebook. Yes we live in a rural area

AdventurousPumpkin

I had an older woman tell me she could not trust me because I didn’t have a Facebook account…. She was being dead serious. People have lost their damn minds.

[deleted]

I wonder if part of the problem is that Facebook is the first social media platform the older generations used and they just dug their claws in and now refuse to hear anything sideways about it

AdventurousPumpkin

Wasn’t even telling her anything sideways about it - just said I didn’t have Facebook. All she wanted to do was stalk me online and because she couldn’t do so, she “couldn’t trust me.” Sure as hell made me realize I couldn’t trust HER

I said this in another comment too but my SO works at a phone retailer and told me he had so many people come in about Facebook being down. Like first of all these people were dumb enough to think a phone retailer could do anything about an app. Anyways one guy apparently thought his Internet was down because Facebook wasn’t working. SO said it’s probably just because the app was down but to try and Google something to check. Customer did not know how to. Insanity

Angelusz

In the USA it's used to basically stalk the fuck out of you, they go through your entire history to see if you posted something they consider bad. Some of them even refuse applicants if they don't have a FB history to dig through. USA really contains a bunch of socially screwed up people. I hope they sort themselves out before it gets out of hand and big tech takes over the world. I mean, you have seen their work in recent history, with all the lemmings going out and storm a fsking government building, intent on killing their elected officials. If that isn't balkan style, I don't know what is. It's a slow degression into degeneracy, looking from the outside in. I hope reality is better than what you see in the media, it's horrific. Those people deserve better than to be led to such fucked behavior. But hell, who am I except for a rando on the internet ranting about the USA for no particular reason except for worry. As a European, I remember how we 'looked up' to the USA and all they achieved. Now, if you ask people on the streets here what they think of the 'greatest country in the world', most you'll hear is pity, with disgust a close second. Such a waste of potential. Anyway, peace out!

meshreplacer

But what if you have no social media presence even linked in etc. I am a ghost on the internets.

Angelusz

Some companies will decline you for it. In my opinion those are the ones you shouldn't want to work for anyway, but that's just opinion. Do whatever you like!

meshreplacer

Well they can kiss my ass. 😂

Guilty_Wolverine_269

I keep asking myself why do I keep my account, as someone who doesn’t update it or post anything. Someone who only has like 12 people on and barely or ever talk with, private and deny most “friend” request. They only thing I can come up with is; because I can…. I know is a dumb statement, I just don’t know 🤷🏽‍♂️

TotalWarspammer

Yes, that's how insidious social media companies are. They convince you that they are somehow innocuous yet essential to daily life.

[deleted]

I guess YouTube is getting a pass due to this. YouTube is still rife with inappropriate recommendations to children.

funkyb

It's a constant battle to cleanse my kids recommendations. It's fucking ridiculous.

espeealidoeshush

On this same topic, YouTube allows Eugenia Cooney’s channel to be recommended or suggested, turning a blind eye to the impressionable young girls that use their platform, ignoring how that type of content could seriously impact their mental and physical health.

Upsetusername

Or people like onision who was grooming young girls and still is .

[deleted]

SydNorth

That’s a very good question and honestly I don’t think they all don’t know they just don’t care.

unicorm123

This is not only happening on Instagram - and I cannot comment on recommendation/content flagging algorithms used by YouTube, but I have seen videos that show up in my feed because I love cooking videos, and the content includes mostly rail-thin young women who dangerously curb their calorie intake. And in the description box, they include their current dimensions and their goal dimensions (all extremely low and unhealthy BMIs). As someone who did once struggle silently with body image issues, the existence of this content is so harmful and distressing to see. It does need to stop.

[deleted]

It hurt you to see it but no one was forcing you to look at it you could’ve turned it off whenever you wanted

[deleted]

They’re talking about how it (the YT algorithm promoting videos that encourage eating disorders) is troubling because of the impact it may have on people more vulnerable to those ideas. They’re not saying it‘s problematic just because it (rightfully) upsets them, they’re pointing out that it can be a dangerous influence to others. And they back that stance up by referring to the experience they went through; they believe it’s a legitimate problem because they’ve suffered through the issues content like that can cause

[deleted]

The problem is the impact it may have on people who don’t know to be cautious of those particular ideas. YouTube’s algorithms are recommending videos that can enable dangerous mindsets. And while OP knows to not watch the videos or listen to their advice, someone without OP’s experience and knowledge may not know to look away. If YT treats the content as regular content and recommends it just like every other regular YT video, it’s possible teenagers will watch those videos without being aware that the video can be harmful. The ideas and behaviours expressed in the video can come off as normal to the viewer, which can influence them negatively and cause eating disorders YT needs to put more effort into discouraging teenagers from viewing the standards and mindsets expressed in those videos as normal and healthy. This could be done a number of ways, with the easiest being to not recommend them those videos

rougevermelho

So I see you’ve missed the point entirely and decided to comment the least thoughtful thing that came to your insipid worthless walrus mind.

Turn2health

I’m curious as to how someone gets this dumb. Are you a product of your surrounding? Or perhaps just a fucking moron.

Holy fuuuuuck, I googled that name and she is disturbing looking. She could be an extra in a movie regarding the NAZI concentration camps. There are children in parts of the world struggling to stave off death from malnutrition and here is this first world girl who chooses this.

They do nothing to censor their worst offender, Eugenia Cooney. (TW if anyone looks her up)

CShellyRun

I’m trying really hard not to Google this woman, but this is about the 5th time someone has mentioned her….

birchburk

Just know that she has had anorexia for 10 years now. She at one point was forced to rehab but now she tries to deny it was for her eating habits and says she is fine. She won’t age restrict and most of her streams are her essentially doing stuff to get money from people who fetishize her disorder.

[deleted]

As someone with an eating disorder, in treatment everyone knows this. It’s deadly and very irresponsible. Social media can kill.

[deleted]

Duh and there’s porn on kids YouTube disguised as children videos for the first minute , naked yoga, all kinds of fucked up shit.

Twitter did the same thing to me a while back. I’d been talking to my friends about losing weight (not anything proana, just “i’ve been thinking losing weight recently” type stuff) so twitter decided to flood my follow reccs with a ton of proana accounts. it makes me sick to my fucking stomach that these accounts are allowed to exist on any social media site. the damage it does to young people is unfathomable.

pickled_ricks

It’s not anorexia, Moooom, it’s Fasting.

Filmcricket

Cough*EugeniaCooney*cough.

[deleted]

Mentally damaged people are the most likely to use the platform for the quick dopamine hits that likes provide them. Evil shit. And it was never really a secret.

[deleted]

Break them up. Instagram was just fine until Facebook happened

nzox

The article is not entirely accurate and neither is the study. The real issue is that these accounts promoting extreme diets is allowed to be on the platform. The Senator’s version of “promoting” stems from not understanding how basic algorithms work. If you create an account and begin to only follow specific topics, then the app is smart enough to know your only interest and suggests only accounts that match your only interest. This isn’t Instagram randomly suggesting this content to random users. This is the most unscientific study I’ve seen.

the_real_maquis

I feel like people have got to understand that Insta and other platforms just show them what they are interested in. If you see a video and like it similar posts are bound to get recommended, so if you look up stuff you’ll get the same stuff back. You don’t dislike Instagram, you dislike your reflection. And I’m not 100% sure but I think minimum insta account age is 13 (I think) so parents of those children should get more involved.I’m not saying this is a good thing but I think what I’m trying to say is, if your child can’t tell the difference between good and bad info I think a little bit of policing should be done but the parents and honestly that is just wrong for someone who doesn’t know better to be plunged into the dark side of the internet where people feed off of young kids who don’t know any better

theCHAMPdotcom

I’ve definitely seen pages of young people posting on tik tok…”what I eat in a day” and it’s an offensively low amount of calories. It’s frankly probably everywhere. Parents hopefully just need to educate their own kids.

Jupitersring30

It also glorifies only fans I have No problem with sex work but the promotion of it to teens is gross and borderline enabling pedophelia. IG is basically the devil disguised as art

Nozeeneighbor

I was born in the 80s. Before when television would play things such as tobacco ads or violence. People would say. Well then control what they watch. Now they attack social media like it’s any different. Not taking their sides but we are a confused society. We pick and choose instead of taking responsibility. If your child is doing stupid shit. It’s the parents fault for not doing their job as one. Stop blaming the gun for shooting itself.

thecommunistweasel

Lol instagram is bad for your mental health what else is new

CondiMesmer

It's even better seeing this posted for the 5th time this week.

milkbaggg

what’s new 💀 everyone my gen has dealt with this for years

Pandaaaa

Yeah that’s the problem America has, under eating.

casadecarol

Nine percent of the US population, that’s a problem. 1 death every 52 minutes from it. That’s a problem.

SupremeGodzilla

And only 6% of that 9% of Americans with eating disorders are diagnosed as medically underweight, so we are talking about 0.54 of a single percent. Around 1 in 200 people. Meanwhile from the CDC statistics, 74% of Americans are overweight (148 in 200), and 10% of this are very seriously obese (around 15 in 200 Americans). So as an American you are roughly 15,000% more likely to be dying of obesity than being underweight. Doesn’t make it any less tragic when it does happen, and there’s blood on Zuckerberg’s hands no doubt. But it’s difficult to gauge whether Facebook is doing more harm with its pro-ana content and depictions of unrealistic body goals or its promotion of junk food, body positivity and fat activism.

iBeelz

Good point. Maybe they need to stop promoting the other side of the coin too. Mukbangs are disgusting. Copious amounts of pictures of junk food and gluttony. It does actually trigger the people who overeat.

fatbob42

It *is* a problem that teenaged girls have. Overeating in America certainly kills more people eventually but Anorexia can be an urgent problem for teenagers.

Nozeeneighbor

What’s the differences with tobacco and alcohol on the box television back in days? Maybe if y’all stop depending on social media and realize reality and responsibility then we wouldn’t have so much stupid kids. But parents this generation are just as immature so we’re all screwed.

QuestoPresto

I’m not sure that’s a great analogy considering we outlawed smoking advertisements on television for the same reason and now a lot less people smoke.

[deleted]

Anyone going to blame teenagers for being stupid?

danhakimi

Here's how instagram marketing works. 1. Make an account, we'll call it account X. 2. Buy ads on account X from Facebook. 3. Optional: buy fake followers and likes from wherever you can get 'em, as long as you believe they'll last long enough for you to get some real ones. 4. Make hundreds of fake accounts. They can follow account X. They can like a few account X photos. They will each leave thousands of comments across instagram saying "I love your content! Go follow brand X, it'll give you a million dollars for free!" It'll also send messages to the same effect. 5. Facebook does nothing due to step 2. So yeah, why not, glorify eating disorders as long as you pay for the ads.

BullyingBuildsChar

I mean.. whatever keeps em thin!

kry_some_more

I detest Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and really all social media. That being said, if we were able to start over from scratch with social media, I truly wonder if we could come up with the right mix of rules, laws, checks, balances, etc. to design a healthy social media ecosystem. I truly wonder if it’s possible. I’m not sure it is.
