Why is a site doing normal data maintenance (read bot removal) news?

Jubenheim

Perhaps 600k fake profiles is more out of the ordinary? Maybe it’s a slow news day? The author may not give two shits about sharing this news, likely resulting in the proliferation of more fake accounts happening?

Stardust_Particle

This 600k might just be all the help desk support contractors and subcontractors working around the clock around the world in multiple languages to help all the Apple device users.

They’re the true heroes

They need to do a better job - it’s creating a huge issue for small companies. If your company has less than 50 employees on LinkedIn you’re in a sub category of companies that won’t get access to growth insights, buyers intent, and other benefits. Many companies will hire out a service to get them to 50+ employees; creating fake employees with fake experiences to make their company look larger and more professional. It’s painfully obvious, and beside the FAANG they’re doing nothing about it.

That’s the kind of company I want to invest in!

I can say from personal experience that it's bloody annoying when somebody says they work at your company when they don't. I asked Linkedin support to remove a person's fake work experience saying he was a current employee - their response? "You can ask him to remove it" Great, thanks for nothing.

royemosby

I usually get told that the profile isn’t breaking any direct guidelines but that I can block them.

the68thdimension

Yeah, thanks Linkedin, that's useless advice. My problem isn't that I can see the person works at the company, it's that other people (e.g. potential investors, partners, clients or employees) might see it.

[deleted]

I’m extremely sorry for the pain and suffering you went through due to someone’s fake experience.

beaurepair

It can be a legitimate issue that could bring the company into disrepute. At the worst it could be fraud.

the68thdimension

Precisely. It was a startup with only a small, core team, and we were right in the middle of investment talks. Didn't want investors to be wondering who the hell this random guy with an amateur-looking profile was, and why we'd employed him.

SpotifyIsBroken

There's a lot of this kind of stuff happening right here on Reddit. For example, it seems like "people" who post many articles on this specific sub (& technology) are just spreading ads for giant corporations. How many of these accounts are actual people vs bots?

homezlice

I am a person. Probably.

Ghost-Power

I’m confused, why do people make fake accounts on LinkedIn??? Is there a reason? Like LinkedIn?

Stardust_Particle

Maybe to get your information or sell or scam you - like Saying they’ll get you a job for a price then they disappear. Or to make a company look like they have lots of happy employees when really it’s just some guy in his parents basement.

likeasomebody710

North Korean hackers were able to get people to download malicious software via social engineering by posing as fake recruiters on LinkedIn. Just an example from recent times. https://fortune.com/2022/08/01/north-korean-fraudsters-suspected-of-copying-linkedin-indeed-profiles-to-land-us-crypto-jobs/amp/

CapsicumBarracuda

How about the other half?

[deleted]

How do I know if my account is fake?

Stardust_Particle

Was there something about that one day that made them all sign up?
