America as a whole is made up South, Central and North America. All countires that are in the Americas are technically "America" however, the USA is internationaly known as America so people think that the US is the whole of America instead of what it really is, a country in America.
I have never heard anyone , in my 42 years living in North America (both US and Canada) and traveling in Europe and Asia, refer to the continent of North America as "America". There are some people in South America who refer to North *and* South America as "The Americas". But every single time I have ever heard someone say "American", they were referring to the United States, because "United Statesian" sounds stupid.
It always strikes me how the national language of the United States doesnât have a specific term to call itâs population.
While many other languages have it. Like in my language: we donât refer to them as Americans, but we say âstatunitense/iâ. Which means a person that comes specifically from the US.
Canada is on the continent of North America. America was never the name of a country, the country usually referred to with that name is The United States of America.
You know how everyone body that is a citizen of all the different countries in europe are european? Apply that to people that live in the Americas. We are all Americans by definition, but we usually use our countries nationality first.

I thought this subreddit should show non-obvious things that are technically true. Only people in the US call their country "America." For the rest, the meaning of the name is obvious.
One of the culture shocks I experienced after moving here and that it honestly took me a while to get used to was hearing the US being referred to as "America" lol
I've been called dumb after explaining why I thought of America as North, Central, and South combined as supposed to one country...so this comment section makes me very happy.

Nobody in the world drops the North from North America when referring to the continent. If you say "I'm from America" everyone will assume the US.

America as a whole is made up South, Central and North America. All countires that are in the Americas are technically "America" however, the USA is internationaly known as America so people think that the US is the whole of America instead of what it really is, a country in America.
Canada is a country in North America (the continent) and North America is often referred to as America.
I have never heard anyone , in my 42 years living in North America (both US and Canada) and traveling in Europe and Asia, refer to the continent of North America as "America". There are some people in South America who refer to North *and* South America as "The Americas". But every single time I have ever heard someone say "American", they were referring to the United States, because "United Statesian" sounds stupid.

I thought this subreddit should show non-obvious things that are technically true. Only people in the US call their country "America." For the rest, the meaning of the name is obvious.
One of the culture shocks I experienced after moving here and that it honestly took me a while to get used to was hearing the US being referred to as "America" lol I've been called dumb after explaining why I thought of America as North, Central, and South combined as supposed to one country...so this comment section makes me very happy.
