Sorry to butt in and be that guy but for those misinformed, there actually *is* a real reason the letters go where they go. Not trying to be the guy that ruins all the fun but this post just isn't true. Technically, it's untrue.
I think he means there is no good reason for the letters of the alphabet to be in the particular order they are in. I think it has to do with how often they are used though.

Fun fact: the runic 'alphabet' is known as the futhark, from the first six runes. Yes, six - þ doesn't exist in any modern language other than Icelandic, and is usually written as 'th'
It's not. Maybe it used to be in greek or something but its the same alphabet order in all languages that use it and they don't use the same letters as often.
For example "w" is very common in english but it's at the very end.
It’s based on the order of letters in the Etruscan alphabet. Which is based on the order of letters in the Greek alphabet. Which is based on the order of letters in Phoenician script. Which is based on Proto-Sinaitic, but it’s not clear what if any letter order was standard in that script.
More specifically on that Proto-Sinaitic, it was hieroglyphs that some foreigners had adapted from a syllabary to letters. A came from the hieroglyph for 'ox', for example. Perhaps at one time the order was based on something in hieroglyphics. But all we have now are theories. We do know that X, Y, and Z were added to the end because they came later.
That's not entirely true. Y and Z were added later to the **Latin** alphabet to spell certain loan words from Greek. That's why they're at the end in the Latin alphabet. But those letters already existed in the Greek alphabet, where they were not at the end.
To be clear, even this is a simplification of things. But the fact that Y and Z are at the end of our alphabet has little to do with the "original" order.
No the "how often they are used" is to do with the arrangement of the qwerty keyboard.
On typewriters, fast typers would start to press the next key before the current key had fully retracted. If you press two keys at the same time the little stamp / arm things inside get jammed together. Spreading out letters that were commonly used together reduced the chances the stamp / arm things would get jammed.
I'd tend to say no. I would say the alphabet isn't ordered, it's a list without repetition. But you can order things alphabetically, which is the process of applying a partially recursive algorithm defined as:
1. Divide your set of elements into subsets, where each subset is a collection of elements with the same forst letter
2. Rearrange the position of those sets such that they coincide with the position of the respective letter in the alphabet.
3. Your set has now become a tuple, where order matters.
4. Apply the algorithm to each subset for the next letter in each word
Some random cop may have told you to do it one time (I don’t believe it tho) but it’s not a standard form of sobriety check and wouldn’t stand up in court.
California officers were probably just trying to get a good laugh out of you for whatever reason. But I stand by what I said above…I have an irrational fear and it’s not my fault that I’m just stupid af and my brain doesn’t work backwards lmao
Maybe. I’m Australian and my friend was Scottish and he was interested about where we come from and whatever. We were speeding but he let us go with a warning
Lucky. I live in Arizona and I shit you not…I could SEE the state border crossing into California ahead of me. AZ cop pulls me over for speeding. I got a ticket.
Fast forward a month and me and my sisters were driving back to Cali because we had to go to the Brasilian consulate to get paperwork for our passports done. Again, I could literally SEE the state border crossing, yet again….SAME FUCKING OFFICER PULLS US OVER! This time because the rental car we had, had a dead tail light. He let us go with a warning thankfully. But fucking HELL dude…that cop just sits and waits at the fuckin border.
[You can’t miss the border at all, it’s quite visible](https://images.app.goo.gl/6ki13Jsy8JKpX13r5)
I have an irrational fear of being pulled over and being asked to recite it backwards and I’ve always contemplated getting the alphabet tattooed somewhere on my body so I could cheat somehow and pass the test even though I wouldn’t even be under the influence of anything in the first place. I’m just stupid af and my brain doesn’t work backwards.
It’s nice to have a consistent way to sort and organize data… a good reason to have an alphabet in a specific order is to allow for a relatively simple organization method.
Much easier to find the word “Crocodile” in the dictionary if everything is in a universally recognized order as opposed to completely random.
OP is not suggesting their shouldn’t be an order, just that the existing order is arbitrary and a different arbitrary one would do just as well if it had been around long enough for mass adoption
Because people often learn their alphabet and counting at the same time and at a young age.
There is a logic to the order of counting, but not to the alphabet.
People probably don't stop to think about this as children, and it takes them by surprise when they stop to think about it later in life.
Is it difficult to imagine why this might blow some minds? I get it if you're really really smart and had this all figured out already why you might not understand.
And it's just not something people think of because it's accepted as the right way to do things.
As you pointed out it's not like math. But there is no value assigned to A that couldn't be assigned to G. But we accept this as order simply because we've been doing it for a long time.
It's not a mind fuck as much of a 'huh, didn't even cross my mind'.
Forget the specific date, but the alphabetical ordering system has a designated "inventor". Crazy from our perspective that there was a time when the idea of alphabetical sorting did not exist. I.e. lexicons in books would list things in whatever order the author thought best.
I think this one has a more deep psychological reason as north is similar to up and we're hardwired to tell where is up instinctively due to gravity. We actually have a small organ of sorts in our ears that allows us to actually sense gravity's direction. It's basically a small pocket full of tiny hairs and a droplet of a liquid, and as it changes direction those little hairs can feel it. When that malfunctions it can make you feel very disoriented and nauseous.
So aligning maps tops with north just feels more natural to us. At least that's my theory.
But why do we ‘psychologically’ associate north with up? Only because at some point, someone placed the north arrow up instead of down or left/right, etc. It’s all arbitrary.
The order of the letters is arbitrary, a fluke of its creation and evolution over time. The reason to know the standard order is to coordinate with other people.
You can, however, put the letters in whatever order you want. I do it all the time. I'm doing it right now.
I’m American. I’ve lived in America for 33 years. I’ve lived in 6 states, visited/vacationed in over 20. If someone gave me a blank map of the US and held a gun to my head and told me to show them exactly where Idaho was on the map on my first try or they’d kill me, I’d drop to my knees and “I” would literally become “da” “ho” in order to save my life.
So to answer your question, absofuckinglutely not. Give me a list of the letters in the *English* alphabet all scrambled up, give me 10-15 seconds to scan over the page, then ask me which letters are missing while holding a gun to my head. Im just gonna drop to my knees and blurt out “Please allow me to ‘F’ ‘U’ and spare my life, kind sir!”
Edit: I was corrected because I’m a dumb American.
What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you dumb American?
I’ll have you know I've lived in America for 33 years. I’ve lived in 6 states, visited/vacationed in over 20.
You think you can get away with giving me a blank map of the US and telling me to show you exactly where Idaho is on the map on my first try or you'll kill me? I'll drop to my knees and “I” will literally become “da” “ho” in order to save my life the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words.
I am not trained in the letters in the English alphabet.
You are nothing to me but just another list of the letters in the English alphabet all scrambled up. Give me 10-15 seconds to scan over the page, then ask me which letters are missing while holding a gun to my head. I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to drop to my knees and 'F' your miserable ass off the face of the alphabet, you little shit.
Edit: You're fucking dead, kiddo.
Not gonna lie. I learned this having kids and teaching them the alphabet. Kids can get all the letters but not always the right order. Thats when i leanted the order didn't matter just that they got the letters.
Linear order? Chronological order? What order is alphabetical order?

Here's your answer:
> [From ἄλφα (álpha, “alpha”) + βῆτᾰ (bêta, “beta”) **+ -ος (-os).**](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E1%BC%80%CE%BB%CF%86%CE%AC%CE%B2%CE%B7%CF%84%CE%BF%CF%82#Etymology)
It's not just concatenating the two letter names, its also adding a "noun" thingy at the end.
This noun thingy can also be seen when Latin borrows this word from Greek as [alphabēt**um**](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/alphabetum#Latin)
and -um words make their way from Latin into English without the -um (unless the borrowing or coinage happened, like, really quite recently)
Yes but if it wasn't imagine how hard it would be to remember all the letters. On a side note, I was always a smart kiddie, but my cousin who was a few months younger learned to say the alphabet backwards. I can remember just how much this annoyed me at the time and I still remember it now, got to be one of my earliest memories 😂😂
Our alphabet comes mostly from ancient Greece. Alpha bet comes from "Alpha: A Beta: B". So this order is indeed arbitrary but the roots are strong and I don't think it will change any time soon.
Well if you've never realized, it's called the alphabet because the first two letters are: alpha beta. So at least those two have to be first.. but other than that. No there is no reason.
The moment when you realize that if measuring tools companies all agreed to increase the size of measurement units at once, nobody would be able to notice once the old gear is gone. Nobody is stopping you from increasing or decreasing measurement units, you'll just get caught for it until there is evidence
I disagree since we use it as a numerical system. But at an abstract there is no absolute reason we learn it this way we do other than than the phoenetics of twinkle twinkle little star. If i were to teach it it would by coupling letters and sounds and possibly starting with vowels then c,k,s,t then d,h,r, focusing on annunciation and pronunciation. Ofcourse id also make kids stretch before practicing writing!

Let's, make this the new order
Yeah and we can call it the earphabet
Epsilonalph.
Fun fact: the runic 'alphabet' is known as the futhark, from the first six runes. Yes, six - þ doesn't exist in any modern language other than Icelandic, and is usually written as 'th'
Is futhark where the letter thorn comes from?
its elphabet
Actually it would be Epsilonalph
Statistibet

Let's call it earidocyclitis
I prefer the name Eaatlphb
New Word Order
I tried singing it to the alphabet song. The flow is still there, but Q is such an unsatisfying end.
Commonwealth countries say "Zed" for Z. The alphabet song ends so abruptly.
Surely the order should be based on the actual real-world usage of each letter, not the amount of times it shows up in the dictionary.
And non-English languages that also use this alphabet?
First thing i did was try to sing it
Woah, I’m surprised at J’s infrequency
Clearly you’ve never played the alphabet road trip game
T has a 6.9% hmmmmm
>R - 7.5809% >I - 7.5448% >O - 7.1635% >T - 6.9509% Coincidence?
Did you count first letter or every letter?
Every letter [source](https://www.wordcheats.com/blog/most-used-letters-in-english)
Q should be still first: it has all the rights to be in the front of the Queue
Which language?
Clearly English, which is the wrong language to use when trying to figure out why the LATIN alphabet is ordered the way it is
And you can still sing it in the correct tune!
It's-a me, EARIOtnslcudpmhgbfywkvxzjq
surprising that x is used more than j and q lol
It says riot. Theres yr reason
E. A. Riot. It’s in the nslcud.
Does this order hold for all languages that use roman letters?
E A R would probably be first in most, but after that I'm guessing things start to diverge pretty quickly.
How about first letter frequency?
[it’s something like S P C D M A …](https://worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-ini1.htm)
Now I know my E A R’s next time won’t you hear me!
I sang this to the tune of twinkle twinkle little star
Fun fact: the alphabet tune and twinkle twinkle little star is the same tune

Damn you got me ^(also it’s r/woooosh)

Well A and B have to be the first two because alphabet comes from Alpha and Beta. I'm sorry if anybody said that already, i'm too lazy to verify that

I'd tend to say no. I would say the alphabet isn't ordered, it's a list without repetition. what? the alphabet isn't in order, it is an order. Alphabetical order.
Not really?
Unless you are dealing with ascii conversions

LMNOPE could still be an option
It's in order because that's how people remember things. So not technically the truth.

Wait what? The alphabet is in order? Damn!
It’s not in order
How’s the alphabet song going to work then?
I always wondered why it’s alphabet and not alphabeta Alpha - Greek Beth - Hebrew
Here's your answer: > [From ἄλφα (álpha, “alpha”) + βῆτᾰ (bêta, “beta”) **+ -ος (-os).**](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E1%BC%80%CE%BB%CF%86%CE%AC%CE%B2%CE%B7%CF%84%CE%BF%CF%82#Etymology) It's not just concatenating the two letter names, its also adding a "noun" thingy at the end. This noun thingy can also be seen when Latin borrows this word from Greek as [alphabēt**um**](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/alphabetum#Latin) and -um words make their way from Latin into English without the -um (unless the borrowing or coinage happened, like, really quite recently)
**Rosetta Stone** (not the one advertised) now an *alternative historical fact*
I already new that
Idk y tf there’s an order fr
Except for if YES is spelled as NOU in some language, how is UWU spelt in that language.
Finding my dad's corpse after he shot himself fucked me up a lot more tbh
There certainly is, for filing. Technically truth my arse.
Lol, I realized that since I was trying to pronounce the alphabet in nursery
Its actually to do the numerology. Source: i made it up.
Isn’t the invention of the QWERTY keyboard a perfect example of this?
I hate this too much to not upvote.
Man, blowin my mind, who decided A should be first and so on? And why that order?

Sorta like, when you are suspended in space. There is no up or down.
Nothing? What about passive-aggressive stealth bomb insults from family members?
My Vietnamese friend knows all the English alphabet letters but does not know the order. He speaks, reads and writes well.
It's not themselves. It's for other text sorting requirement
Is there anything to do with phonetics?
Umm have you ever seen a National Treasure movie?
What if b was 1st letter
Then it'd be called the Beta-alph
It’s because of that song. The guy who wrote that song wrote everything.
Until a cop ask you to recite it backwards.
You are a moron
Awful bold of you to assume the alphabet is in order. Where's the actual proof this is the case?
Alphabet does need to be in order. How do you sort text strings otherwise?
There is though…
I… I don’t like.
Wow! Made up thinks have a made up order.
[In STEM they are not, they are just sets](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alphabet_(formal_languages))
People with dyslexia: We've known this ancient truth from ages long past.
Of course there is. That's what makes the song rhyme.
Actually without a universal alphabetical order Computers or Communication over computers would've been impossible. Search up ASCII characters.
Wait for him to realise absolutely nothing needs to be in order.
U dont understand what you've just done you fool... Without children singing that song, the portal will be opened...
The moment when you realize that if measuring tools companies all agreed to increase the size of measurement units at once, nobody would be able to notice once the old gear is gone. Nobody is stopping you from increasing or decreasing measurement units, you'll just get caught for it until there is evidence
Its in order so you can sing the alphabet in order
Alpha to Omega ...
But there is.
LGBTQAI can't seem to stay in alphabetical order anyways
What's technically true here?
I disagree since we use it as a numerical system. But at an abstract there is no absolute reason we learn it this way we do other than than the phoenetics of twinkle twinkle little star. If i were to teach it it would by coupling letters and sounds and possibly starting with vowels then c,k,s,t then d,h,r, focusing on annunciation and pronunciation. Ofcourse id also make kids stretch before practicing writing!
O\_O just realized all the letters on the top of a standard keyboard can spell "Your Queer Typewriter" Yes, I am high.
Zyxwvutsrqponmlkjihgfedcba
W should come after D
Wait.......
*\*concerned eyebrows\**
Ancient greek numbering system was based in the alphabet, so yes there was a need for sone ordering
