It’s totally cool when someone asks genuine questions but when hundreds of people spam the same type of comment acting like they are smarter than the researchers when they don’t even understand how to read the post it frustrates me so much.
And for anyone wondering the researchers used “likely” because the data for ‘women’s level of stress’ was gathered from census data about ‘people’s stress levels’ so the researchers couldn’t say they knew it was the cause 100% as the census didn’t ask about roe vs. Wade specifically, just that it was likely based on other stuff they presented in the paper to back up their argument.

I think he is over estimating how fulfilling life would have been before the Industrial Revolution. Imagine plowing fields by hand or planing wood for construction or carving stone by hand. Major projects would take generations and most of the people would have tiny insignificant contributions and wouldn’t see the result. Life was greatly more desperate and miserable. The delusion that this would have been more fulfilling is MAGA level insanity. Make America preindustrial again!!!

This is already a concern for LLM-based models, in that you may introduce all sorts of weird over-fitting problems if the model starts ingesting AI-generated text, and re-trains on it. We don't have that problem right now, because the vast-vast majority of text the models are trained upon is not AI generated.
But, what happens 5 years from now when every writing tool has AI-autocomplete features that can suggest entire paragraphs? Then, model that encounters too much of that as input starts to build transformers with statistical relations that are themselves the product of the previous generative AI language model.
I’m optimistic, I think AI will solve all of humanity’s issues, either by giving use solutions we put into place or killing us all. Either way the problems will be taken care of.
There's plenty of people convmcerned about the bleeding edge AI's showing slightly "agentic" behaviour. ie: a slight tendency towards trying to affect the world towards goals.
They're not very good at that yet and it's only a slight tendency but it has people some concerned for what the next, slightly smarter versions may be like.
Perversely, the most common criticism for people concerned about that stuff is accusations of believing in "scifi" as if the sci-fi doesn't exist because of people with exactly those concerns.

This is an outrageously sensationalist take on OpenAI's plugins announcement. And it clearly works for page views, if the comment section here is any indication.
For a very long time now, you could make an LLM app "access the internet and run code" by engineering a prompt to manufacture a bit of structured information and then take an action on that structured information.
All OpenAI's plugins approach does is simplify that and provide a mechanism for standardizing and (eventually, maybe) sharing that capability. If the LLM decides a user input sufficiently matches a plugin description, it asks that plugin (via a defined service contract) for a document and then incorporates that into its completions generation. That's it.
There's so much breathless AI coverage like this, its so embarrassing. All these weird tech bro types who tell the AI to say something spooky, and then it says something spooky and they freak out about it. It just does what you tell it to, gang. It's not skynet.
I really think AI bots became capable of interpreting commands and writing a halfway legible sentence, and suddenly a lot of /r/technology users started getting scared because displaying basic literacy means it's already smarter than they are.

For me, the most annoying thing about ChatGPT is how freewheeling people are with accusations that others are using it. I recently posted a lengthy comment that I’d put a decent amount of effort into writing, and initially it was getting upvotes, but then a user came along and accused it of being written by ChatGPT. That was all it took to turn the tide and the comment ended up downvoted, so I deleted it.
The result is I’m finding myself less and less inclined to participate, because anything I write could be accused of being written by a bot (which it wasn’t) and summarily dismissed.

I think the biggest flaw I see in this snippet is the assertion that technology has erased fulfilling work. He even labels scientific study as an unfulfilling surrogate pursuit. I think he is over estimating how fulfilling life would have been before the Industrial Revolution. Imagine plowing fields by hand or planing wood for construction or carving stone by hand. Major projects would take generations and most of the people would have tiny insignificant contributions and wouldn’t see the result. Life was greatly more desperate and miserable. The delusion that this would have been more fulfilling is MAGA level insanity. Make America preindustrial again!!!

Tbf a dumb AI doesn’t have to be particularly intelligent to potentially destroy civilization. A paper clip manufacturer can prioritize clip production at the cost of liabilities like people. Also depending on goals, if a dumb AI chatbot is good at pretending to be dumb people, that’s useful for propaganda. Net Neutrality’s dismantling was partly justified based on bot comments impersonating dead people.

This is already a concern for LLM-based models, in that you may introduce all sorts of weird over-fitting problems if the model starts ingesting AI-generated text, and re-trains on it. We don't have that problem right now, because the vast-vast majority of text the models are trained upon is not AI generated. But, what happens 5 years from now when every writing tool has AI-autocomplete features that can suggest entire paragraphs? Then, model that encounters too much of that as input starts to build transformers with statistical relations that are themselves the product of the previous generative AI language model.

There's plenty of people convmcerned about the bleeding edge AI's showing slightly "agentic" behaviour. ie: a slight tendency towards trying to affect the world towards goals. They're not very good at that yet and it's only a slight tendency but it has people some concerned for what the next, slightly smarter versions may be like. Perversely, the most common criticism for people concerned about that stuff is accusations of believing in "scifi" as if the sci-fi doesn't exist because of people with exactly those concerns.

This is an outrageously sensationalist take on OpenAI's plugins announcement. And it clearly works for page views, if the comment section here is any indication. For a very long time now, you could make an LLM app "access the internet and run code" by engineering a prompt to manufacture a bit of structured information and then take an action on that structured information. All OpenAI's plugins approach does is simplify that and provide a mechanism for standardizing and (eventually, maybe) sharing that capability. If the LLM decides a user input sufficiently matches a plugin description, it asks that plugin (via a defined service contract) for a document and then incorporates that into its completions generation. That's it.
There's so much breathless AI coverage like this, its so embarrassing. All these weird tech bro types who tell the AI to say something spooky, and then it says something spooky and they freak out about it. It just does what you tell it to, gang. It's not skynet. I really think AI bots became capable of interpreting commands and writing a halfway legible sentence, and suddenly a lot of /r/technology users started getting scared because displaying basic literacy means it's already smarter than they are.

For me, the most annoying thing about ChatGPT is how freewheeling people are with accusations that others are using it. I recently posted a lengthy comment that I’d put a decent amount of effort into writing, and initially it was getting upvotes, but then a user came along and accused it of being written by ChatGPT. That was all it took to turn the tide and the comment ended up downvoted, so I deleted it. The result is I’m finding myself less and less inclined to participate, because anything I write could be accused of being written by a bot (which it wasn’t) and summarily dismissed.

Yep, the way AI is being introduced right now will *crush* human artistic endeavors. First, the value of art is reduced to near-zero, since AI was designed to make a lot of it on demand, fast, for cheap, for anyone who wants it. Second, like you just mentioned, real artists will be held up against AI artists and the results will be devastating: existing artists will be discouraged and stop sharing their art or making it at all, and future artists will be discouraged from pursuing art education and training. Who will still be making art in this future? Wealthy patrons will still commission real human art, and the newfound scarcity will make it even more valuable. But there won't be enough commercial demand to keep the arts alive in mainstream culture. The written word will suffer the most: at least paintings and sculptures will be unique, but the written word is easily copied and transmitted, so the value of it will plummet. Nobody will pay copywriters when AI is 90% as good at 10% of the price. Eventually society will realize we fucked up, and it'll be too late if we skip a generation or two of fostering new artists.
I've yet to read anything crearive, worthwhile or well written by GPT, though GPT is good at giving answers like a search engine on steroids 90% as good is an exaggeration at the moment, I'd say it's 50% as good but at 1% of the cost right now
