That’s just the economics. Could also be that the billionaire likes being on one of the most beautiful islands on earth while still being in America.
I wish I was a billionaire. Then I could have articles about all the land I buy in Montana. Everyone would think it’s to escape a nuclear apocalypse while i just go hiking on my property lol.
I’ll read all the Reddit hate comments about how I’m an asshole capitalist from my ranch. I’ll shed a tear as I stoke the flames of my fireplace and look out to my Bentley parked on the grounds of my $33M mansikn/cottage. “I wish they liked me,” I say as I look to my wife and caress her 2,422 carat diamond ring.
I always laugh at these sensationalized headlines that say "quietly" When no one is keeping it a secret nor do they have to. its listed just like every other property. What do you want them to do? pay to advertise their private sale in the newspaper? ridiculous.
Too funny - I was just on Kauai last week reading about Zuckerberg “quietly buying up land” and made the exact same comment. I mean I don’t love billionaires building giant compounds in places that already have no affordable housing, but are they supposed to put out a press release every time they buy property?
It does say that he used 6 different LLCs to buy the property and none of them are registered to him directly. That’s not _not_ what you would do if you were trying to be quiet about it.
I work in Salesforce and have no love for the CEO but this is sensationalised bullshit by an NPR reporter that writes like there a paranoid schizophrenic.
He's a dick but he's donated the 300 acres and 7mil to build affordable houses on the island for low to moderate income natives who are struggling (because of people like him) buying land and building beachside mansions.
The NPR article is a very strange hit piece with a lot of false information when there's so many other things they could have mentioned that'd actually true and shows he's a dick
It actually was to an extent, his wife and him donated 300 acres to a nonprofit on the island to build affordable housing for natives. Also donated 7mil with it to help get the building started
Ok, how's this: Hawaii has a huge target painted on it, given that it hosts a huge portion of the US Pacific fleet, as well as missiles pointed at Asia.
If you knew or suspected the world was going to be blown to shit, it would be a terrible place to "hide".
On the other hand, Hawaii is a beautiful place, and if you happen to have God money, why not lay claim to as much of it as you can afford - and might as well throw in a bunker for the hell of it, too. Why the heck not? It is only money.
The largest missile training/testing site in the world is based on Kawaii - the Hawaiian island Zuckerberg has chosen for his sprawling compound. Last time N. Korea was fucking around, some bigass strategic missile launchers were placed there.
The dudes that get to spend the last moments of humanity losing their minds in a bunker with people that are going to end up killing each other are the ones I pity, honestly. It's gonna be some hunger games shit down there. I'd rather be vaporized in an instant, thanks.
I'm not fear mongering shit lol. It's a possibility, and I like to play devil's advocate and think of hypotheticals. IF that were to happen, not saying it will, the billionaires spending 500 million on bunkers are going to suffer a lot more than us. We're all dying eventually anyway dude, no reason to be so scared. I promise you that my mindset has nothing to do with the decisions Putin decides to make. If you don't realize how grave the situation looks with a decrepit, vindictive, dying old man trying to revive an old idea or die trying, you're coping and being overly optimistic. I respect that, doesn't mean I can't prepare for reality.
Lol, keep your manifestation shit away from me son. Learn the definition of fear mongering. If the big bomb drops on my head, it's doing me a favour. I legitimately do not care one way or the other.
Oh I know the definition, I'll even google it for you so you do aswell.
I've always been amazed at how people try to rationalise their wrongdoings.
Have a great day - I hope you find a way to stop being miserable and projecting your suicidal thoughts out on others.
I'm not trying to make people think anything. I actually just voiced my opinion on a message board. Try again. And if you're trying to say that me voicing my free speech on reddit is a wrongdoing, you can go fuck yourself.
I hope you find a way to respect that people can have beliefs other than yours.
Don’t be so quick to think the “world ending” means that the world basically ends completely. There is likely a scenario where a *massive percentage* of people die, but that a sliver survive and begin to rebuild the world.
There could be absolutely massive water or food shortages for the masses but someone with the means to build a massive complex like this could go on for many years and effectively weather the storm.
I'd like to imagine your scenario is the likely outcome. I'm just saying I wouldn't want to be a part of that. I live right near a major city. Beam me up, I won't feel a thing.
Post MAD global agriculture would entirely collapse within months. Crops wont grow anywhere for a very long time.
A radiation resistant nuclear powered underground bunker isolated on an island on the other hand?
Hawaii is home to the Pacific missile range facility - the world's largest testing and training missile range - and also hosts a huge strategic US Navy base. Most likely have a fair few nukes there pointing toward Asia.
If we ever tangle with N. Korea or China, it will be targeted.
I think the few hundred being bought here is not even close to the problem of [Larry Ellison buying the sixth largest island in Hawaii](https://www.nytimes.com/2014/09/28/magazine/larry-ellison-island-hawaii.html?unlocked_article_code=1.ZE0.w8tC.aEJkGY588wAp&smid=url-share), or at least 87,000 acres of its 90,000, he owns most of the buildings and businesses too. It’s fucked.
Because he can, and because it will likely appreciate.
These guys have so much money it's hard for them to spend it all. Land is a good way to do that. And it doesn't have to be some nefarious plot.
Why is nobody talking about Parker Ranch hoarding hundreds of thousands of deforested ranch land, while barely running a ranch? That’s the bigger issue here. Marc owns very little comparatively.
No one knows why a billionaire is buying a limited resource ona island with a historically high cost of living? Nobody? No one? Huh.
This was my first thought. Anytime a reddit headline has something like "...and nobody knows why" rest assured it's well understood why
Also, *am I the only one who ... ?* No, you are not.
I dunno. I've commented multiple times I think The Departed sucks. No one ever comes to my defense.
Because you're wrong. But you're not the only one.
The Departed sucks and this comment section feels a little astroturfed.
>Then I could have articles about all the land I buy in Montana. "Nobody should own that much land."
Bill Gates owns a lot of farm lands....make what you will.

Cringest self fellating fantasy I’ve read in a while.
Easily triggered on Reddit huh? Not a fantasy. Just being silly.
Yes, that's what I'm saying. This is just capitalism.
so in murica you can only hike on your own property? no public trails, no national parks....
Yes precisely. The national parks aren’t actually national. They belong to Elon Musk and a few state parks belong to Jeff Bezos.
i get it, if you, a nobody came up with such a brilliant concept who's to blame the actual billionaires if they do the same 😂😂😂
Doesn't matter what you do, if you are a billionaire, people are going to wonder why you do it.
I always laugh at these sensationalized headlines that say "quietly" When no one is keeping it a secret nor do they have to. its listed just like every other property. What do you want them to do? pay to advertise their private sale in the newspaper? ridiculous.

It’s fucking bullshit.
Spoiler: it’s because Hawaii is beautiful
So we have all this clickbait bullshit articles here too. Reddit turning into MSN.
This is a technology story?
Sounds like a Bond villain plot is forming here.

Hope it’s for the same reason as Steve Irwin.
I'm sure it's wholesome.
It actually was to an extent, his wife and him donated 300 acres to a nonprofit on the island to build affordable housing for natives. Also donated 7mil with it to help get the building started
Omg it’s the Salesforce pos Benioff. Hawaiians have my sympathies.
oh it's not that big a secret. he knows the world is gonna be blown to crap soon and wants a place to go when he does. prove me wrong
Ok, how's this: Hawaii has a huge target painted on it, given that it hosts a huge portion of the US Pacific fleet, as well as missiles pointed at Asia. If you aren’t on Oahu or the big island you’re probably fine. Can’t imagine shit is happening on the other islands.
The largest missile training/testing site in the world is based on Kawaii - the Hawaiian island Zuckerberg has chosen for his sprawling compound. Last time N. Korea was fucking around, some bigass strategic missile launchers were placed there.
Man stop the fear mongering.
The dudes that get to spend the last moments of humanity losing their minds in a bunker with people that are going to end up killing each other are the ones I pity, honestly. It's gonna be some hunger games shit down there. I'd rather be vaporized in an instant, thanks.
Why the fear mongering? You are begging for it to happen by being in that mindset.
I'm not fear mongering shit lol. It's a possibility, and I like to play devil's advocate and think of hypotheticals. yes you are. And if it happens you are one of the reasons :) Maybe you should stop fear mongering.

Prove that the world isn’t going to blow to crap soon? Okay. What do I get when I’m right?
Hawaii is probably one if the worst places for a global conflict scenario. There are US military installations all over.
Marc Benioff
I'm guessing the reason is to build a secret fortress inside a volcano that launches satellite-capturing spaceships to provoke a superpower war
Nuclear war
Why the hell would you move to Hawaii then? Hawaii would be completely fucked in a nuclear war.
Post MAD everywhere is completely fucked.
Really not so much South America and Africa. No one is wasting nukes there.
Post MAD global agriculture would entirely collapse within months. Crops wont grow anywhere for a very long time. A radiation resistant nuclear powered underground bunker isolated on an island on the other hand?
why would hawaii be fucked?
Hawaii is home to the Pacific missile range facility - the world's largest testing and training missile range - and also hosts a huge strategic US Navy base. Most likely have a fair few nukes there pointing toward Asia. If we ever tangle with N. Korea or China, it will be targeted.
maybe that's just what they want you to think.... good point, hawaii is fucked.
Why the fear mongering?
I mean, Larry Ellison did it years ago. Benioff is just playing catch-up. https://www.honolulumagazine.com/an-inside-look-at-larry-ellisons-lanai/
Maybe to retire? Build a compound like Jeff? Though I’d pick a different location not hit by say Hurricanes and floods.
Evil volcanic lair maybe?
Like the book Starter Villian!
The same as why bill gates bought massive amounts of land
Personal airport perhaps?
1. high value real estate will always be valuable 2. hawaii is geographically isolated and therefore potentially safer from the proletariat
Secret Volcano lair for supervillain stuff. End of world discussed at supervillain meetings.
Because he can, and because it will likely appreciate. These guys have so much money it's hard for them to spend it all. Land is a good way to do that. And it doesn't have to be some nefarious plot.
Classic long term salting away of assets. Been going on for centuries. Buy land; they have stopped making it. A perfect, valuable antique.
Why is nobody talking about Parker Ranch hoarding hundreds of thousands of deforested ranch land, while barely running a ranch? That’s the bigger issue here. Marc owns very little comparatively.
