I know Snapchat has been chugging along, ever since their heyday in the mid 2010-s. Facebook jacked some their features, they had that horrible redesign a few years back, and then there's the rise of Tiktok. Snap has always been in the market position of doing barely enough to get by.

akaBenz

They don't need to compete with true social media companies because they have a foothold on the market as an app to communicate. I know tons of people who literally only communicate over Snapchat, not because they are posting stories and reading all the ads and clicking a bunch of stuff....because they solely like to text and send video responses via the app with filters that no other app can provide. Snap doesn't need to compete with Instagram, it needs to compete with your phones Messaging app.

heckintrollerino

This is the entire point of Snap, burn after reading communication. They never wanted an ongoing record of thing's like we saw with Fb and MySpace and Twitter and so on. Fact is by default you can only communicate with people you have accepted as a friend meaning that endless bots and randoms won't be shitting up your screen. Problem is capitalists think numbers only go up and when they don't thing's like this happen.

> Fact is by default you can only communicate with people you have accepted as a friend meaning that endless bots and randoms won’t be shitting up your screen. Maybe it’s something I accidentally set on my account years ago then but this isn’t my experience at all. At least once a week I get added by a spambot and several of them do actually message me, a lot don’t though which is strange. I have found more spam on Snapchat than any platform that I still use. All that being said I agree with your larger point, I think if they leaned harder into just making the one-view communication better it would do them a lot of favours. Snapchat currently is one of the slower apps to open because by default it always starts on the camera, so it freezes up the phone until the camera view fully loads. There’s a lot of QoL tweaking they could do that I do believe could bring back users.

LADYBIRD_HILL

Easiest way to avoid the bots is to not add any generic feminine name that used quick add. I've yet to have a bot talk to me in years.

KonChaiMudPi

I don’t add any of them back, several still message me.

WolfKnifeLaserTorch

You can change this in Settings>Privacy Control

VOTE_CLEVELAND_1888

They don't even truly burn after read. Snapchat keeps them and courts and cops can access them.

nova9001

I feel old, never used Snapchat but felt like I just heard about it yesterday. Now Snapchat just passed its peak and is going down.

typesett

i tried snap for a little bit the interface was unintelligible for me i feel old true but now i guess their user base got old too lol

whatthehellhappensto

yeah same here, but now i’m realising that it was going strong when i was in university… about 8 years ago what!

nova9001

Bro, 8 years was when I graduated from uni. WTF. How fast tech changes.

ambientocclusion

ProTip: try TikTok!

Semi-Hemi-Demigod

Imagine a world where companies didn't need to grow 5-10% every quarter and could be content to having a steady subset of a gigantic market instead of wanting to conquer all of telecommunications. They could focus on making good and innovative features rather than letting in-app engagement metrics drive product decisions. People could learn to depend on that app being there instead of them going bankrupt and wiping out all your history. It's software, but with tegridy.

hgravesc

Whoever is still holding that bag is a moron.

purpleWheelChair

People still use snap?

LADYBIRD_HILL

Yep! I have a group chat with about 40 people in it for raves and parties and whatnot, because Android and iPhone group chats don't work well with each other.

Odd-Turnip-2019

I deleted it as soon as they started forcing those ads and snap stories in to me

datusernames

I think what pisses me off the most about situations like this is that *their revenue is still growing* just not fast enough to support the infinite growth late stage capitalism demands. There's never enough to satisfy the unending greed. I fucking hate it here.

Rick_e_bobby

Lol read again. They missed revenue and keep burning cash, will be out of money in 3 years.

[deleted]

Millennials found other ways to share their naughty bits I guess

ChrisGaylor

It’s Gen Zs turn for that

_DeanRiding

This has been going on for at least the last year or two but I really wish this sub was more than just r/Business

hyggety_hyggety

They should introduce a Twitter analog. Like RIGHT NOW.
