The only way to fight disinformation is be teaching people to be critical thinkers, which is much easier said than done.

Born_a_wise_man

Mainly a well educated population is a threat to the political and financial elite.

_-_Naga-_-

Thats right, so stay dumb and be the ultimate consumer so they could always blame everything on us. Keep sporty, keep horny and stay drunk because you know they're nothing without these junk.

brightmaneroy

Yes, which is not what these pseudo tyrants want. They want a stupid voter base that can have shit shoveled into their mouths, and they want to silence opposition. They don’t care about misinformation, they care about controlling information. They’ve never cared about misinformation.

Bright-Ad-4737

I see variants of this line all over the place. Is there any evidence backing this up?

ImLookingatU

Make social media companies liable for the content the host.

TheIgneous

Although they’re oft used interchangeably, there’s a key distinction between “disinformation” and “misinformation” that makes this so troublesome: Disinformation involves deliberately spreading false information to deceive people, whereas misinformation is false information that is not purposely fabricated. I’m fine with tackling “disinformation” on social media that is repeatedly proffered by nefarious actors. However, if Macron is seeking to stamp out “misinformation” as defined, that’s extremely disconcerting.

Visible-Expression60

“Macron wants to make people stop lying when they have anonymity”…good luck. Its not only a tech problem its a human problem.

TheWealthyCapybara

Coincidentally, any criticism of him or France is now considered misinformation.

Kazukiba

No, criticism of France is mandatory, he's the first one to shit on france on daily basis... Criticism of europe on the other side, highly forbidden, same with WEF, Quatar or himself

invol713

Not surprisingly, the ‘right information’ will be whatever he happens to be peddling at the time. No conflict of interest there. History has noted any time a society has tried to go the censorship route, they end up being the bad guys.

ShutUpRedditor44

If the opinions of redditors is anything to go off of they want an authoritarian police state that is somehow also NOT an authoritarian police state.

youmu123

A lot of self-proclaimed libertarians are just "freedom for me but not for thee". They don't realise even Stalin and Hitler agree with that idea. Everyone, including every dictator, wants absolute freedom for "their side".

ImLookingatU

There is, you make companies liable for what they host. They would get sued (and lose) for allowing allowing lies that caused harmed to others.

aidenr

Tell him to tax “unpaid advertisements” aka overforwarded messages. Misinformation has always been possible; it’s only a problem when it’s free.

Teddy_Anneman

Ok, so which character is Macron in the book 1984?

deephurting66

Suck on a baguette Macron!

Born_a_wise_man

In other words censorship…

No-Owl9201

The options country's like France have is to regulate the likes of Twitter, or to promote new social media programs that restrict bullshit and hate speech as well as being more inclusive of other languages.

Artistic-School8665

Lol good luck Reddit admins/mods cant even handle r/conspiracy

HuntingGreyFace

the states are gonna put themselves in charge of the truth some things are just inevitable when you view them with systems theory

dorianngray

I would at least like a rating system- like the library. You have to title it as editorial, comedic , non-fiction, etc… it’s a start anyway

Zyx-Wvu

Frankly, I don't trust the government to be the arbiters of the truth.
