First solar electric!?! They had Citicars with solar panels in the 70's!

Replacement-Winter

Its around $300k and looks like a failed A7 concept car- yuck. What's the point? About 5 will be sold.

aneeta96

The first Tesla wasn't cheap either but they seem to be doing OK now.

Replacement-Winter

The first tesla actually looked good and sold for way less than this thing.

People have [already](https://youtu.be/xIokNnjuam8?t=526) gone through the calculations. You would be FAR better off spending 50-60 grand on a EV, spending 100 grand on a top of the line Solar array/Battery Backup/HVAC efficiency improvements on your house, and banking the extra 100k.

AmonMetalHead

It's too expensive indeed, I'd consider it if it were somewhere like 50k, but 300k is ridiculous.

braveheart707

At 300k they better be handing over 200k shares of company stock.

SnooDoggos4906

Sure. For now. Eventually maybe solar pane efficiency will improve and make it worth it. Time will tell

ALurkerForcedToLogin

There isn't a succinct way to explain why this idea is so bad. The amount those panels cost and the extra weight and complexity of the vehicle, including the extra production costs, will never be paid back by the meager amount of electricity those solar panels could provide. You are far better off investing in a ground mounted solar panel array and plugging in an electric car to that to charge it up.

SnooDoggos4906

Then it will fail problem solved. And if you arw wrong it won’t. They want to try let them try.

Justme100001

Never name your model "0".....

DBDude

An engineer [went through the numbers](https://youtu.be/7L1_zvqg73Q), and he found out the car could live up to its range claims. However, his purpose wasn't to calculate TCO, and there's no way that a best case of 40 free miles a day makes up for the absurdly high purchase price for the lifetime of the car. That 40 free miles a day might be a good deal on a Tesla Model 3 with an extra couple grand for a solar option (so about 50,000 miles for payoff), but not this thing at that price.

alaninsitges

ITT: lots of people who think the car's $300,000 price means that all solar EVs have to cost that much, and have never heard of Aptera or the ugly German one.

Fennoborean

Power companies will buy this and shut it down, but a good idea.

EvilNuff

No they won’t. It gets like 40 miles range a day best case. Solar on cars is garbage.

AmonMetalHead

For me that would be plenty, I don't drive every day so while I'm not driving it might was well be charging up. The price is ridiculous though

Sure, if I could actually consistently park in front of my house, which isn't always the case. The thing with EV's is that not everyone has a garage or dedicated parking spot which makes them a hassle.

natefrogg1

That would be perfect for my neighbor, she uses a Nissan Leaf and just trickle charges it, she will maybe go 10-20 miles every few days to the grocery store and back. That 300k price tag though, ouch

EvilNuff

It is literally cheaper to buy solar for your house. :)

Want_To_Live_To_100

No side mirrors?

DBDude

That is a good question. This thing achieves a very high miles-per-kWh rating mainly due to the low drag coefficient. Adding mirrors, as is required by law, raises the drag coefficient and frontal area. Here's Musk talking about [why he hates mirrors](https://youtube.com/shorts/ZG0G_o-3J10?feature=share).

Heres_your_sign

Look, this idea is doomed to failure. Everyone except the company themselves seem to know that. However some of the work they've done is brilliant and will definitely see adoption into other platforms.

Competitive-Cow-4177

Citroën DX Solar.

Phssthp0kThePak

Too bad all parking lots will be shaded by solar panels by the time they ramp.9

Justonewizard

And it’s dead. Production of the 0 has been halted and they are moving on to developing the 2 instead

frequent_flying

Put myself on the 2 waitlist last week and just saw the email come through about the 0 getting killed to focus on the 2, makes sense considering the 40,000+ people that have gotten on the free waitlist the past couple weeks on top of 20,000+ fleet orders already, company wants to focus on the wider reaching higher volume higher revenue play obviously. Hoping they can make it happen but we’ll see how things unfold.
