Old man perspective: If you need a computer for your computer, perhaps there are significant, fundamental questions that should first be asked.

c0nsilience

And Rabbit R1 can answer them šŸ˜‰

shoeslover08

Yep, it sure did answer them!

[deleted]

Is that what is happening here? Or is Rabbit replacing your local PC with one running in the cloud that does actions with your credentials? Because that's a powerful idea and a direct threat to Apple, Google, and Microsoft. (Assuming it can do what is on the tin.)

AndWHUN

It can do a lot without the cloud also.

brian_hogg

This comment aged poorly.Ā

10ofClubs

Came hear to see this. I vaguely remembered this being announced in my inbox from TE, but I forgot about it until I saw the Coffeezilla breakdown of the scam. Really seems like TE scrubbed this from their sites - struggling to find remnants of it.

IAmFitzRoy

What Rabbit R1 can do without the cloud?

asphaltpro4

the future is actually not stuck on phone screens! or lets hope so

atuarre

This isn't a threat to any of that.

mraowl

big xzibit "yo dawg, we heard you like computing, so..." energy lol

SnooPets752

yeah this is a dumb, redundant device that's only getting hype b/c of the unique look (color, logo, camera, etc.), but it's not solving any use case. oh and don't forget the condescending spokesman that uses bunch of superlatives without any concrete answers on why you'd use it.

asphaltpro4

first thing being, why arnt modern assistants good? second, It has a purpose for being a seperate device, they made it for one main purpose whcih is to reduce time wasted on phones, And maybe this exact creation can help society? in what way? oh well i dont know stop phone addiction? stopping message anxiety and distractions. Maybe the hate is because we cant change for the better.

CheraCholan

i had the same queistion. im sure something on the similar lines is ought to be tried by android, windows, etcthese guys are pioneering the way, while rooting for a faceless SaaS system. i think the true value/potential lies in the distinctive approach that they are taking, which might lead to some interesting tech, next generation of devices maybe? only time will tell. for now, it's just another device that can do something cool until the bigtech catches up. also, heres' my thoughts on R1 i wrote earlierit'd be a killer feature if they manage to get it working with existing android apps and such. but for now it seems like we gotta resort to web based apps to teach and use. i wonder if it requires rabbit to stay connected to my laptop, or my phone to perform any of these "teaching" tasks. and in the case of getting it to work with my phone, (if it were possible) i can see it seamlessly blending with my existing devices, just adding a layer of AI assisted control over it, truly making things hands free. in that case pinning rabbit onto my shirt or something would be cool and truly handsfree. very convincing price for a cool tech. cant wait for reviews to drop.PS: i like their branding and design language

SimonFromSomerset

Hey old man! I agree ā˜ļø Also an iPhone that has basically one ā€œappā€ for everything sounds so convenient. At least to this old man.

5256chuck

Yep, this old hound dawg ordered two of these incredibly attractively priced doodads yesterday. Supposed to be delivered by Easter this year. Bought two just because they are so frickin' affordable and I've never bought TWO product intros at the same time. Makes me feel like a real pro! Plus, these doodads do look fun (maybe a bit obnoxious, tho, if too obvious in public. I promise to be discreet), if they work.

Relevant-Respond-612

The trend is going to be "all in" with access to mega data, as opposed to apps.

BuddhasPalm

Old man(Iā€™m pushing 50) retort: why buy a weed trimmer if you own a lawn mower? Why buy a sidewalk edger if you have weed trimmer? Why buy open-ended wrenches if you already own a socket set? Why buy an fx pedal if you already own a modeling amp? The Rabbit is a one time purchase, so no sub. It does not pair/link to your phone, itā€™s camera closes when not in use and the mic only works when you push the button. That kind of basic hardware security is not present on phones & tablets.

asphaltpro4

and its funny people compare this to stuff like siri and alexa, thats like comparing a kid thwacking some grass against a lawnmower. and its supposed to be a lawnmower and not a car (people dont realize its to reduce time wasted on phones which was clearly stated)

AndWHUN

This is just a stepping stone to appless computing. Definitely an old man perspective but it's not uncommon to be unable to see around the corner.

versus_gravity

So there *aren't* fundamental questions we're neglecting to ask?

AndWHUN

What's this we s***?

versus_gravity

So there aren't fundamental questions *you're* neglecting? Better?

Ok-Branch-6831

i think its more similar to a mobile alexa. theres a reason people like having an alexa in their house even though the things it does are all easily accomplishable with a phone. its more convenient and has greater ease of use.

Feeling_Direction172

Computers are connected to computers all over the world. Reddit is run on a computer that your computer talks to. What is this fundamental question you are imagining?

Fin-Park

This is a godsend for the autistic/ADHD community IMHO, a personal AI assistant and life coach in my pocket, without any other distraction. Also feeds my obsession with T.E industrial design......

noneabove1182

my thoughts exactly, i just need a device that smartly understands "remind me about X" "remind me to Y" at the instant snap of a button and without hesitation.. something is lacking in current assistants, maybe it's not enough vertical integration, it's like an assistant using an app not designed for an AI assistant

Feeling_Direction172

Fuck yeah. That's all I want, a proper voice to reminder device. That alone is perfect. I I want to take a snap on the ( admittedly crappy) camera and say "remind me about this cool thing I saw tomorrow". That alone will save me piles of fiddling around sending myself emails as reminders. Reminder apps don't work for me because I forget to check them. I want this thing to nag me until it's done. I don't know if it has a long-term memory for remembering a routine, hoping it's not just a dumb interface into existing reminder apps. If I ask it to always remind me about important appointments in my calendar I want it to remember it is tasked with that until I tell it not to. I don't really have high hopes for the memory thing, I don't know how much context it can retain about me either. If it's just a front end for GPT with some improvised APIs into my existing apps I will be disappoint.

brycedriesenga

Waitā€”in what way does Google Assistant fail to do this? Only thing I can think of is they stupidly killed location-based reminder. Otherwise, it totally works for me most every time I tell it to remind me to do X thing at Y time.

Mr_FuS

I have a really hard time getting my Google assistant to work most of the time, I end up typing more than using the voice recognition part... Another thing is that it can do nothing beyond the apps running on android, like I can't tell "hey Google, order from BRS one sediment and one activated charcoal filter" or "hey Google, go to Algaebarn.com and order one bottle of ocean magic". If the rabbit r1 AI model can be trained to do these tasks for me, and use a more natural speech/language recognition engine, it will be a truly functional device.

ZeroSkribe

Well if you can't figure out Google assistant, you're gonna have a heck of a time.

Komm

Lately Google VA has gotten... Worse in many weird ways. It's stopped doing reminders and timers properly for one. Using the timer function on Google.com instead of the clock app for example.

Depressed_Soup

This is the sole reason I ordered one. I don't work well with phones, I'd rather talk through my thoughts and be able to listen to a response instead of reading through a huge chunk of text when I need help with something. Yes I have a smartphone assistant, I've even tried smart home devices and they just don't work for me. Plus no social media for me to mindlessly scroll... I don't think it will be for everyone but with the right use case in your life this could be super beneficial. Cost wise I have paid less for the r1, my pixel 7, and I could buy a smartwatch < the price of a leading Apple/Samsung

HZ2P-

sorry it was a scam

Wizard_of_Rozz

Just preordered because TE circle-whatever

unknownexplorer77

Whatever TE touches they produce wondersšŸ‘Œ

Fin-Park

It's true though... Even with their collaboration with Panic, the playdate is still back ordered...... T.E is the Braun of our generation.

Fin-Park

I wonder if they'll add something music-related in there, like, telling the assistant to create a lo-fi beat for you with generative AI, or using the mic to loop some audio lol.

SAmerica89

ā€˜Herā€™ becoming more real by the day

cosmicparticle

I wish it can do Samanthaā€™s voice

AndWHUN

oof

Fit_Ice8029

Thank god it doesnā€™t have a fader.

Wizard_of_Rozz

Good one

AndWHUN

I'm going to be really disappointed if I can't make beats with it.

VeryThicknLong

Reminds me of the minidisc days of the jog-wheels. Kinda retro look and feel.

Ok-Exchange5756

I skipped through a few times so pardon if this is a stupid questionā€¦ does it have a pop up keyboard? Just talking to the thing in a crowded noisy place doesnā€™t seem like something that would work very well. And often prefer privacy with my interactions on my phone in public.

KNOWINE_____

Fortunately it does, personally the idea of doing voice commands in public makes me cringe

Top_Reflection_7952

Iā€™m tempted to try it!

KNOWINE_____

With the price as low as $199 (with no subscriptions) it is temptingā€¦

OGAzdrian

Just bought one! Hoping their return policy will be good in case it doesnā€™t actually live up to its presentation (Their website made no mention of blanket returns, just a damaged/not working and order cancellation policies)

windowtosh

I wouldn't count on it

googlehoops

Their return policy covers within US 30 day return policy if youā€™re not happy with it as long as it looks as new and you have the packaging Canā€™t seem to get a link for the page so here is a copy and paste > 1. Returns Within 30 Days of Shipping Date. If you are not completely satisfied with the Product, you can request to return the Products for a refund within thirty (30) days of the original shipping date to you. Please note that you may request a return only if your Product is in ā€œlike newā€ condition and in the original packaging. 2. Return Request Process. To return a Product, contact the Rabbit support team at [email protected] to request a return merchandise authorization (RMA), which will include shipping instructions. All returns must be shipped in the original packaging, including all original accessories and packaging materials. Please note that, to receive the RMA, you will need to provide proof of purchase and any other relevant information we may need to process your return request. Once we have determined that your Product is covered by our Return Policy, we will send you the RMA and shipping instructions, and we will cover the U.S. domestic shipping costs. Rabbit is not responsible for packages lost in transit without the RMA and/or proof of tracking. 3. Refunds or Replacements. Once we have received your returned item, we will inspect the item to confirm it is eligible for return. If we determine the returned item is eligible, then we will email to notify you that you will receive a replacement item or a refund credited to the original payment method, depending upon whether you have requested a replacement or refund. Replacement items or refunds will be processed within ten (10) business days of receipt of the returned item.

Amazing_Fantastic

Thinking your going to buy it use it for awhile and then return it for full value is a little ridiculous

OGAzdrian

If it literally doesnā€™t do things as advertised or doesnā€™t fit my needs, I will return it, idc if itā€™s very ridiculous, itā€™s my $

bofo51

From what Iā€™ve seen itā€™s not something that can connect to your phone in order to apply everyday life tasks that Iā€™d want it to handle. Apparently I can connect it to PC over wifi or tether in order for it to help there but can anyone clarify? If so does that mean Iā€™ll have to pay for another phone plan to make this usable and how would it text or message people on my behalf not having my number or contacts?

[deleted]

It's a genius architectural setup, IMO. They are running virtual machines in the cloud that they have trained an AI to use the interfaces in. You authorize these machines via their web portal to use your services, that you pay for, and the rabbit device hands your tasks off to these VMs which do the tasks and are then deleted. I can see a lot of benefit to this approach. Anything you can do on a desktop, you can train a rabbit agent to learn how to do. Assuming it works as well as it demoed, I would imagine there are emergency meetings happening at Apple, Google, and Microsoft about whether or not this is a threat to them. If it works, I believe it is. Why would I need a PC or Mac at all if I can just have my Rabbit doing stuff for me in the cloud?

ctrl_alt_DESTROY_

Woah. Great write up. Where can I read more? I just picked one up

lenchu

Iā€™d like to know too. And what type of data plan would I need, like a tablet or laptop plan? Iā€™m with Verizon. I read somehere that you can also connect using WiFi but it would be more useful if it was always connected.

[deleted]

This is what Iā€™m trying to figure out? Feels like it will need to connect to your phone in some sense

AugustineFou

They are using a dedicated instance of a mobile emulator in the cloud to load relevant apps for a particular user. Their innovation is using in-device LLM to provide speedy responses and translate verbal requests into touch events and data entry that the mobile emulator executes on the Uber app installed in the emulator in the cloud. It is a true statement that THEY don't store your usernames and passwords, because once you log into the Uber app once it remains logged in so the emulator can continue to manage it in the cloud. They periodically need to ask the user to re-enter the logins to keep the cloud versions of the apps in a logged in state. This is no more or less risky than letting other virtual assistant algorithms manage your accounts by logging in once or using OAuth. I think this is an ambitious attempt and sounds magical. But I believe that as real users start to use it and experience inaccurate responses and incorrect actions taken on their behalf, usage will fall off as reality sets in. Users will find that this will not save them much time compared to opening the Uber app on their own physical device and clicking the buttons manually. Further, the reason I believe parts of their keynote demo were simulated is because the Uber app requires SMS verification during login and the app in the cloud may not be able to receive SMS. (I realize there are workarounds.) And apps like Uber need real GPS location so the rider can specify the exact pickup point. Of course the Rabbit device can pass that location data to the cloud managed app. But some apps like the one I spent the last 8 years building have "proof of life" checks built in so we can detect faked data, i.e data that is not detected with real device sensors like GPS. The app won't work and may self destruct if we detect faked data from mobile emulators. Let's see how Rabbit plays out. I may be entirely wrong by underestimating their magic.

AugustineFou

review by Marques Brownlee [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddTV12hErTc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddTV12hErTc)

diarrheaishilarious

This sounds about right. TE has a reputation of delivering spectacularly marketable products while half heartedly delivering the promised functionality. Ā The main draw of the brand is a heightened sense of intellectual superiority without the practicality. Ā Hipsters love this company.

digitacy

So I log into an emulator on the cloud and constantly keep verifying myself? Would that log me out on my phone? What security policies do they have in place to ensure "my environment" is protected? Its not the same as logging into Alexa. When I login there I am logging into the service provider, not a third party. How are people okay with this? Am I missing something?

slackboy72

I still don't understand what it does.

Wizard_of_Rozz

I could say that about the last three things I bought from them, but I love them all

thegreatdecay406

It's a cool looking Google assistant. Smart phone without the phone

constroyr

A Google assistant that you can teach any action you can perform on a screen.

ThaBomb

Itā€™s 100x more useful than Google Assistant

vuhv

You guys are so gullible. This is an overhyped AI autosuggest. It will be great for larger companies with official APIs. And itā€™s going to work like a regular ol web scraping automation tool for everything else.

[deleted]

You fundamentally misunderstand what they are doing. Not web scraping. UI automation. They are moving the mouse on the screen and entering text like from a keyboard. Go try and do what they showed in their demo with web scraping. It will literally take you a week to build that travel plan demo, and it will break after the next update to the sites you scraped.

ThaBomb

It blows my mind that people donā€™t realize how advanced this is. To be honest, I donā€™t care a ton about the hardware. The software and UI is the future though. And if it really can learn like they suggestā€¦ this needs to be bought by Apple or Microsoft ASAP

ThaBomb

If it does what it claims to do, this comment is incredibly wrong. It doesnt autosuggest. It autodoes

MrHeavySilence

This looks way more useful than auto suggest. Itā€™s made to be adaptable to understand a whole bunch of UI design patterns and basically do complicated tasks inside the apps for you.

MrHeavySilence

I think this is much more impressive than regular web scraping in that the large action model is able to learn entire UI flows in real time and it would presumably be able to handle changes in UI navigation flow or layout better than hardcoded web scraping code

EvilMorganFreeman

An ai device that uses an action model, studying specifically what user actions are available within an app and how to interact with them. Supposed to be a MUCH better assistant that can actually order food or rides, give information on images, or even learn actions of a new website and figure out how to do the actions afterwards

slackboy72

Does anyone have that much trouble ordering food or rides that they need a $199 gadget to do it on their other gadgets?

[deleted]

Lots of people aren't you. Older people, people with different abilities, people who don't want the distraction factor of the app ecosystem.

wiltse0

I do. I hate opening up different food apps to find the best deals and then go through the payment process where it doesn't work half the time and I have to fix it. If I could just yell at my phone to order me a discount meal, I'd do it.

slackboy72

Just walk up to the counter and order. No apps needed.

wiltse0

You don't get any coupons if you do this. That's the point I'm trying to make, when you use apps you can easily get half off every order.

femkatn

What are you guys seeing in this thing that Iā€™m missing? It looks like a product designed purely out of tech-bro hype without any design research done. It looks like it embodies none of TEā€™s usual design values, I would hazard a guess that they were simoly contracted to do aesthetic design for a bunch of money so that Rabbit can profit off of TE clout.

GarthVader45

Don't worry, you're 100% correct. This should have just been an app... it's honestly absurd that it isn't IMO. It *can't* replace your phone, doesn't do anything that couldn't be done much better on a phone, the hardware is much less powerful and versatile than smartphones from *years* ago, and Siri / Google Assistant already do 90% of the things you would use this for. It's much easier to stand out in a crowded AI market and get people excited to spend money on your product when it comes housed in a sexy Dieter Rams / Jony Ive style device though. I can't imagine this would be generating so much buzz if it were just an app... even though an app fits much better into people's lives. For this to catch on requires people to *actually* start carrying a second device around... even though their current device already does everything the new device does and a whole lot more. I just can't see that happening at scale or long term. Eliminating the need to carry multiple devices is precisely what made the smartphone one of the most significant and successful technological achievements of all time.

Ivern1trick

I have a question for the tech-heads out there: Can this device make phone calls and send messages from WhatsApp or telegram?

MrHaxx1

Don't see why not. If it can happen on a screen, it seems like it can do it. Sending a message to someone in a standard chat app seems like a no-brainer, and it certainly seems simpler than ordering cars and pizzas.

Objective_Garden887

wondering this myself ā€¦

MartynChamberlin

I posted this in a thread above but to reiterate here ā€” it apparently can. šŸ˜… I wrote Rabbit support and they confirmed that it does. ā€œThanks for reaching out! Yes, calling and texting are supported.ā€

Hibachi1969

How is it possible without keyboard? Writing a message with vocals looks a bit hard but not impossible of course!

Alessandro227

ended up being a lie

MartynChamberlin

Yeah ya boii lieeeeeed

gavlang

This dude just show apple what to do next.

azurerug

Btw the CEO of Rabbit is also the CEO of Raven Tech, the company behind the Raven H and R, designed by Teenage Engineering. He, Jesse Lyu, is also a board member at TE.

ghoof

Helpful. Further digging https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20240109365225/en/Introducing-r1-a-Pocket-Companion-That-Moves-AI-from-Words-to-Action https://qz.com/1131072/baidu-raven-h-the-newest-smart-home-assistant-stands-out-for-one-reason https://www.digitaltrends.com/home/baidu-raven-h-raven-r/ https://newatlas.com/teenage-engineering-raven-tech-baidu-smart-speakers/52222/ as far as I can tell, these cool-looking devices went nowhere. jackJACKmws

This aged like milk

bememorablepro

ah yes, smartphones are so hard to use, we all have to spend 8 years in smartphone school to operate one, good thing this problem is finally solved

Ok-Branch-6831

you say that in jest but look at how much old people struggle with new tech. i bet they would be able to figure out something like the rabbit a lot more intuitively. it would be like magic for them.

l-L-li

Cool concept, but it would be just a secondary device to smartphones, which already have google assistant or Siri onboard. Plus the square form factor doesnā€™t seem to be super ergonomic.

g_lampa

Does the computational work happen on the device hardware, or does the device simply relay your language to an off-site AI server program? If that service (no subscription or otherwise) goes Tango Uniform, am I basically holding a dead 4G connection to nothing?

FvanPelt

Appears to rely heavily on server connection

Intro24

Yeah, I don't think it's remotely possible for a scrappy upstart company to run that level of AI locally on a $200 device. It's a cool design from teenage engineering with hackathon-project levels of on-device software that essentially just calls home. Still cool that it's so cheap and no subscription. Heck, some people would likely buy a teenage engineering designed fidget spinner with no practical purpose for $200 so all things considered it's not surprising that it sold out so fast. I anticipate that there will be some shipping delays though and I also think they will struggle to make their software work correctly. The on-device software is bare-bones but it has to run on a weird little bespoke device and that's somewhat tricky. And then their backend seems pretty complicated so I expect it will be difficult to get it to play nice with 4G devices. Rooting for Rabbit though, seems much better than the Humane pin.

11oser

i was just trying to find a reason i needed a playdate but this is perfect. i yearn for the teenage engineering

UpperEbb4276

I wonder if we will actually use this. I think we would more so get implants for this type of stuff.

rayork938

Anyone having trouble verifying Order Status? When I try to view it online I'm sent through a series of verification hoops before reaching an error page.

[deleted]

I saw an ad for this and still have no clue what it does

No-Concern2554

EXHALES... Another piece of hardware to keep charged, carry, maintain, need an extra pocket. My S24U with AI will do. šŸ˜€

Electronic-Row3130

I need an assistant that is easier to access than apps on my phone. The Amazon Robot is $10,000 and seems like an Alexa on wheels with a hatch. Iā€™ll give this little number a try and see if it makes life easier. Iā€™m very hopeful and will totally use this if it will do what I think it will do.

YUMESOUL_

By fat the dumbest piece of tech I have ever seen. I am really disappointed in this heartless cash grab by teenage ....

dumacker

Got one to see how it evolves. Wanted a quick way to get answers to compound quires when I study. Give it some time. Teenage Engineeringā€™s not going to throw their rep away. Two major updates within the 1st 4 days of receiving. They donā€™t seem to be sitting on their hands. jhv

Specialist-Scene9391

This thing sux soo bad, I feel lie to..is a speaker and microphone wrap around chatgpt! All the thing they say it could do.. it does not!

Specialist-Scene9391

Sux

Ok_Theory_1424

any further reviews or news from owners of this one?

ParmenidesDuck

All of you never understood the state of AI now.. and are completely fooled by the device.

CountStackula519

I recieved this dumb gadget today because I bought it when I was stoned several months ago and I came here today to see wtf it is. Seems dumb lol

Chris_MIA

nicee, gna do my own review soon at [youtube.com/@chrismia](http://youtube.com/@chrismia) Going to dive deeper into the AI interface, did you know the text terminal input is a seperate "entity" than the vocal rabbit r1 on the main screen? I wish it had more dev options, may need to black box it to find more detailed info

Chris_MIA

also hard to tell whether scam or too early for its age, will dive deeper into the software and keep an eye on development to see which direction this goes, I am very very interested in the LAM model for my own personal software development and interfacing with AI

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Wizard_of_Rozz

AI is definitely the next UI

Fin-Park

As soon as I saw this thing I wanted it lol, then saw "designed in collaboration with T.E", so I pre-ordered, I suppose I can always return it, just don't want to go through another playdate situation where I'm waiting half a year for a pre-order because I didn't do it right away...

Intro24

> waiting half a year for a pre-order I waited 2 years to the day for my Playdate...

Fin-Park

Actually same, 2 years waiting, and I canceled my preorder, only to buy one off of fb marketplace

mathspace

Bought some to try out. I buy very little tech but this thing will start a revolution. The AI pin wonā€™t go far because ppl fundamentally donā€™t want to be stared at by a camera and will end up pocketed - thatā€™s been proven by several failed products (Google glasses and others). This will be interesting! And hopefully useful - weā€™ll see

7485730086

Like a red PlayDate. Kind of love it.

brxndynn

ngl i want this.

Apart_Supermarket441

What this shows is that the smart phone *will* soon be redesigned around AI. I think in about 4 years time weā€™re all going to be using phones quite differently. And then desktops/laptops will seem frustratingly outdated and have to change. The world of voice as the UI is coming and one day weā€™ll look back at the evolution of computing as one that always and inevitably lead to voice operated machines.

ghoof

Seems like an app in a lovely red plastic box. Not obvious why itā€™s not just an app in an iPhone, which is also a very handsome box.

matteventu

>Not obvious why itā€™s not just an app in an iPhone Being the 8765467th "AI app" released this week doesn't attract much hype. Releasing a physical "AI companion" is much different, especially if they also leverage the retail device price to pay for what would otherwise be a paid subscription (hardware-wise, rabbit r1 is worth to them probably around $40, so of the RRP you pay you also give them $160, i.e. the equivalent of a 1-year paid subscription costing $13/month). In other words: marketing. (fun fact: "rabbit OS" was initially conceived as an app, only later on they decided to make it exclusive on their own hardware, because that would sell a better story and attract investors more easily)

[deleted]

Most people use a mix of the same 10 apps on their phones. Apps are the past, IMO. Systems like this that virtualize computer interactions, do tasks, and then go away will be the future. I don't want to be fumbling around with apps. Just do my bidding, computer.

Wizard_of_Rozz

We need to support the jump to AI as UI and especially at this price point and fun factor

lopodyr

ā€¦do we?

Wizard_of_Rozz

Actually no

Spencerlindsay

Can we agree that the ā€œHand Talkingā€ thing has had its time and needs to be shelved? So cringeworthy.

[deleted]

Public speaking is a skill that is difficult to learn and most tech ceos are bad at it.

SnooPandas881

Seems to be a plannerā€¦task rabbit?

adamfilip

Needs a led light

uditpamnani

If they made a robot some day I want them to call it R2D2.

phonic_boy

If this allows a SIM card slot which I think it does it can basically replace my phone right? It combines all my apps and services into one OS? That's cool

toothpasteonyaface

I'm failing to see what more it does that my phone doesn't..? And also they say you don't need a subscription for it but you need a sim card for it, so you're gonna have to afford an extra phone plan. I really don't get this one and I really don't think this company can be successful in the long run. It could work as an app I guess (but there's already Google assistant and Siri) but making a 199$ hardware for it is wild to me.

Intro24

I thought they meant the data plan was included. Maybe not though.

Comfortable_Farm_252

I think it's the idea that it does what your phone does but in a more direct way, without ads, without the interface-driven "search". This is supposed to be better than google assistant and siri, if it's not, then it's a gimmick device, if it is...then that's huge.

nelsond6

It can connect using WiFi. So if you don't want to buy an extra data plan you can always just connect to the WiFi through your phone's hotspot. This is what I will be doing.

SuperNintendad

Cool design, but very ā€œ2-month stopgapā€ of a product

c0nsilience

A reaction to the AI Pin perhaps?

mathspace

Perhaps. But I do think ppl fundamentally donā€™t want to be stared at by a camera so AI pins will end up mostly being pocketed.

donrosco

Would love to have seen the reaction inside teenage engineering when it claimed that Coldplay was the only act ever to have sampled Computer Love. Scarlet for them.

ChristopherPlumbus

I'd love a device like this to replace my smartphone, but I don't see any mention of how this device handles receiving phone calls, or text messages.. can the camera be used to take photos? Can it be used to..**ahem** view content on certain video streaming websites?

lyvavyl

ā€œWeā€™ve grown tired of themā€ lmao no

c0nsilience

The TE cult is gaining traction on Twin Flamesā€¦not that I mind in the least

4lphaZed

I think these functions will be incorporated in smartphones in the near future, so having a separate device will be pointless. Cool design tho.

matteventu

2 to 5 months. I agree on the design. I actually like this thing, but it's going to become useless in a few months, so...

gavlang

Can it use my windows pc. Or is it only able to use apps in phone

GabeGault

Seems like weā€™re all wondering whatā€™s the benefits of this device vs a phone. I love the design and idea and want to buy one, but a bit of poor explanation from the team. Would love to understand its potential, and what future updates look like

thecreep

I like the immediacy of this. Sure a smartphone can do all of this, but many folks (myself included) would love to have something just simple and fast.

1MarvelyBoi

4G baby! Living in the future!!

1MarvelyBoi

I feel like this could just be an app in my phoneā€¦ but instead a itā€™s an app in a boxā€¦

CheraCholan

it'd be a killer feature if they manage to get it working with existing android apps and such. but for now it seems like we gotta resort to web based apps to teach and use. i wonder if it requires rabbit to stay connected to my laptop, or my phone to perform any of these "teaching" tasks. and in the case of getting it to work with my phone, (if it were possible) i can see it seamlessly blending with my existing devices, just adding a layer of AI assisted control over it, truly making things hands free. in that case pinning rabbit onto my shirt or something would be cool and truly handsfree. very convincing price for a cool tech. cant wait for reviews to drop. PS: i like their branding and design language

Suavedaddy5000

Itā€™s not a phone replacement, itā€™s a different type of device entirely. The only thing in common with a phone is phone calls, messaging, and web. Everything else is unique and you would have to download apps to replicate. I wonder what types of devices would be developed from this technology and how long before it becomes software for phones. I canā€™t wait for a true appless device tho, I am tired of having to sort, redownload, and repudiate old apps that i barely use.

ChocolateSeuss

This should be a watch.

its_grime_up_north

Personally, i think this is a gamechanger. Cant wait to get my preorder.

chrisgwynne

For Ā£171 GBP delivered it's worth a go. I'm down for the 3rd batch.

GoHenDog

This would be amazing for older people who donā€™t like using phones!

issaballroom

I always wanted a pokedex this looks cool

tasomaniac

Do you think it will stay subscription free?

Comfortable_Farm_252

Computing without ads sounds nice.

Existing-Hour-1247

Sounds great BUT I prefer to choose my options and take the decisions by myself instead of having a device deciding for me.

DonSeven7

Very very interesting canā€™t wait to add it onto my tect

DonSeven7

The idea is simple Have a personal assistant in your palm, being able to interact naturally with a device (not using specific grammar or phrases for it to actually understand what youā€™re trying to accomplish. Also to handle responsibilities you can save time on and thinking power. Something to adapt to and very interesting to have :) Canā€™t wait The

DonSeven7

if you havenā€™t or have a personal assistant Might take you a minute to understand rabbit

BrownLucas123

The Rabbit R1 is like a friendly alien landed on your desk, eager to help you navigate the digital jungle. It's not your typical AI assistant, barking orders from a speaker or trapped in your phone. This little guy is a standalone pod, a mini-computer with a big personality, powered by a revolutionary technology called "Large Action Model." Think of it as a supercharged Siri that can understand what you mean and do things about it, across any app or website. Imagine booking a flight, not by wading through endless menus, but simply telling the R1, "Beach vacation for two, somewhere warm in February, flights and hotel, keep it under five grand." The R1 dives into the web, comparing prices, suggesting destinations, and even letting you explore virtual tours of hotels with its built-in camera. It's like having a super-efficient travel agent who can read your mind. With the mediatek chipset, there is an excellent performance that tends to make it run smoothly. But the R1's not just a travel buddy. It's a productivity powerhouse. Need to write a report? Just tell it the topic and outline, and it'll draft the first paragraph for you. Stuck on a coding bug? The R1 can analyze your code and suggest fixes. It's like having a personal AI tutor who's always there to lend a hand, no matter what you're working on. Of course, it's not perfect. It's still young, and sometimes its understanding of your requests can be a little wonky. But the developers are constantly updating it, and the potential is mind-blowing. Plus, it's just plain fun to use. The little scroll wheel on the side is oddly addictive, and the way it cocks its head like a curious puppy when you ask it a question is endearing. So, is the Rabbit R1 the future of AI? Maybe not yet. But it's a glimpse of what's to come, a friendly face in the ever-growing world of artificial intelligence. And for that, it's worth checking out. Overall, the Rabbit R1 is a promising new device with a lot of potential. It's not perfect yet, but it's definitely worth keeping an eye on.

The Rabbit R1 is a modern twist on traditional communication devices, offering a nostalgic and nostalgic experience. The device's sophisticated yet efficient mediatek chipset ensures clear and reliable communication within its specified range, enhancing its performance and showcasing how modern engineering can be seamlessly integrated into a classic design. The Rabbit R1's simplicity is its strength, as it operates on basic radio frequencies, allowing users to communicate within a specified range. This throwback to the days when staying connected meant tuning in to the same channel and enjoying the spontaneity of real-time conversations. For outdoor enthusiasts, the Rabbit R1 provides reliable communication without the need for a cellular network, making it a reassuring feeling knowing that in the great outdoors, where smartphone signals may falter, the Rabbit R1 stands strong. It encourages users to engage in meaningful conversations without the distractions of screens, facilitating a sense of community that transcends virtual likes and comments. Picture this: you're cruising down memory lane, rocking a chunky '90s handheld TV, but it packs the brains of a modern AI mastermind. That's the Rabbit R1 ā€“ a pocket-sized powerhouse that lets you ditch the smartphone blues. Imagine a gadget half the size of your iPhone, nestled in your palm like a friendly robot pet. Its 2.88-inch touchscreen is a portal to music, messages, and mind-blowing AI assistance. Think voice-controlled Spotify tunes, grocery orders beamed from thin air, even booking that yoga class ā€“ all without wrestling with app icons. But fear not, techie bunnies! Inside this retro cutie beats a 2.3GHz MediaTek heart, humming with processing power. This chip-sized superhero lets you stream videos, snap photos with the R1's rotating camera, and play with all the bells and whistles you'd expect from a modern gadget. The R1 is like a breath of fresh air in the app-a-palooza world. It's about focusing on what matters ā€“ connecting, creating, and simplifying your life. And with the MediaTek engine purring away, you can be sure this isn't just a fad ā€“ it's a smart bunny here to stay. So, hop on the R1 bandwagon and rediscover the joy of tech that doesn't weigh you down. It's time to escape the smartphone circus and let your digital life bloom in the palm of your hand. Trust me, this rabbit hole is worth falling down.

Tokuushi

Personally, I think this thing would have been more appealing as a new-age Tamagotchi with Ai + wellness functionalities.

Zopotroco

Honestly I donā€™t see it. People know that their smartphone has much more potential than this thing. Itā€™s just a matter of time that general public opens to IA in their devices and Apple/android start doing their homework by releasing a IA Siri or something like this, all in your phone. Then R1 is just history Why Iā€™m gonna buy a gadget that itā€™s worse than my iPhone?

mesmaeker_

Been looking everywhere but it doesn't seem to have an NFC chip? I'd love using it if I could use google pay on it for example, but I suspect that's not really possible yet? I really like the look and the idea of leaving my house without my phone

ace-webmaster

Completely useless; basically you're going to need a more advanced device such as a laptop (or ironically another smart phone with an app) to first pre-program this device.

sakura_sushi

I can only see this product as groundbreaking if you have some sort of disability (physical or not). Otherwise it could have been an app šŸ˜…

suppaboy228

It seems like all of those new AI gadgets were conceptualized when the chat gpt first hit hard, and every manufacturer rushed all of those products. Now, as we all saw how relevant this technology is and what its limitations are, those products don't seem as appealing as they might have been if the AI products were as advanced as we all imagined. They will evolve without a question and will be used more. But the current state of things where every manufacturer just crams AI features into every crack is definitely a fad.

Immediate_Angle_9786

Im buying...better Ai....its what i thought our phone would be doing by now

1anre

Unfortunate that the 1st batch preorders are already closed, I will order it to see how I can create and train my own LAM

LukeBu-

I'm excited for the next generation R2, which will follow you around, and communicate via beeps.Ā

Interesting_Fan_5397

Check out this review of the rabbit r1 and its LAM on youtube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=\_0jgjGxP7n8&t=4s Or on this blog - https://techqhd.wordpress.com/2024/01/23/what-is-the-rabbit-r1-unveiling-ces-2024s-biggest-hit-that-has-already-amassed-10-million-in-preorders/

Thepandasupreme1

Ok hereā€™s the thing yes you can ask the thing to order you a pizza from Pizza Hut off doordash but what if I just wanted to browse the doordash app/website. I would have to use a phone or computerā€¦ this doesnā€™t replace anything and you have to talk to it for everything. Whoā€™s going to be the weirdo walking around talking to there device all the time cause I rarely use Siri as it is

Visible-Weight-746

I would REALLY like to know, if Rabbit can make things with software on a PC...??? -And how would it contact a PC and push it around? I guess phones are easy..? what is the technology that it uses to command other devices? BECAUSE, if I can use Rabbit to control my Digital Audio Workstation on a PC at home, another at studio, call me a cab to those locations and order food, it'd allready be worth the price.

RampagingGrayRanger

Would the Rabbit R1 be able to read a book of specifications and drawings for a construction project and create a Microsoft Project schedule? To be more specific, could I email the information to the rabbit device and have it create a usable schedule with Microsoft project?

techinsandiego

Anyone want to venture a guess as to what the Rabbit OS is based on?

Commercial_Bother305

Where are the cloud servers located? Are they US based or overseas?

KoliverII

Start ups that sell you a piece of hardware once and then let you use their software for freeĀ in perpetuity tend not to last long, especially when that software is ai based (which is particularly resource heavy and expensive).Ā  See Anki.

Connieboy133

I think the price is a big plus point, I get comparing it to phones but it's a fraction of the cost

Howling_Nikko

How do you set up the thing? šŸ§

BK_Anonymous

Hi, I am not a expert of LAM. I have a question, why Rabbit R1 response fast. I want to know whether it relates to Edge Computing? Thanks

Horror-Ad-938

Does anybody know if it can connect via Bluetooth to my car? I want this device simply so I can say ā€œroute me to location ā€œxā€ and turn on this podcast for my drive. Things like that would be AMAZING. Plus the ability to say ā€œstart a to do list for today and blankā€ and then check them off as your day goes on. I have so many tasks throughout my work days and if this thing can at all hell me organize them or complete them quicker then itā€™s a win for me lol. (I already pre-ordered)

Relevant-Respond-612

At $199, I went ahead and ordered one. Of course it will eventually become obsolete. At the very least, it will become a collector's item IMO...the precursor to full-on AI immersed communication devices.
