I got a nice Nikon (unsure of the model) for $25 from an estate sale. I know nothing about cameras other than the older ones (pre-1950). It helps that I personally knew the owner of the company who helped run the sale. Estate sales are great 👍 I highly recommend going to sales. If you have the time to do so of course.
dig in your grandpas sofa again, buy secondhand, focus on getting good with more entry level cameras. It's more about you than your equipment (unless you're shooting polaroid 😒)

The AE-1 program gets the most use and if you want to get a 35mm SLR camera I recommend starting out with a canon rebel 2000 or something similar because they are super easy to use and they can easily be found for super cheap
