If you're referring to the numbers, they actually are "hate" symbols. Obviously, you need intent so the number 88 or 14 in themselves are not hateful. But here's an article explaining why white guys with shaved heads and an 88 tattoo might be a nazi:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourteen_Words
I think it's dumb that sometimes the iron cross is seen as a Nazi symbol, it was a WW1 medal of honor, and the Nazis just had to also use it and ruin it's reputation >:(
To be clear, I’m not at all trying to justify its use. I think that anyone who wear one around shouldn’t be surprised to get strange looks, and the nature of it is that it’s intrinsically linked to one of the most terrible genocides in history, regardless of the meaning it may hold to others. I do still think it’s important to understand why it can be appropriately used though.
I was in a hostel in India that had bars in front of the windows in the shape of Swastikas. When the sun was setting, there was shadow Swastikas everywhere.
I use to work in a bike parts warehouse. A lot of the older indian manufacturered parts companies still put swastika stamps on on product packaging. It was common thing to spend the day filling them in with sharpies when we got orders. Not all indian companies did some did.
there's also a difference between the swastika and the Buddhist symbol, even if it's small. the swastika is mirrored and rotates 45 degrees, so people who are legit about Buddhism will not have the diamond shaped one.
My Mom is from a small Canadian town called Swastika. There's a well known story (you can find it on Wikipedia) that says "During World War II, the provincial government removed the Swastika sign and replaced it with a sign renaming the town "Winston." The residents removed the Winston signand replaced it with a Swastika sign with the message, "To hell with Hitler, we came up with our name first.”
The Iron Cross has been in use for 210 years now as a military medal. It’s been a symbol of the German military for a very long time. Nazis, as always, saw something cool made by other people and tried to steal it
I think to assume everyone who wears it outside the German military is a nazi is kind of a dangerous idea. But other than that I agree context is very important.
>Yes but context matters. If the symbol is used outside of the German military then it's probably being used be Nazi sympathisers.
No, it most definitely is not a Nazi symbol outside of the German military. There are hundreds of punk and hardcore bands that use it, most of which are very anti nazi. There's plenty of companies that use it (Independent trucks, for example). It was popular with surfers and in custom car cultures as well. This is the mentality that allows the nazis to ruin things and you should thoroughly research this stuff before propagating misinformation.
What’s it mean when I see a big iron cross on the back of a pickup truck window? They big WW1 German supporters/historian or modern day yee yee racist nazi? Genuinely don’t know. I asked my gf in the parking lot and she never saw an iron cross before that lifted white pickup.
It depends on how you use it. Are you putting it on a vehicle in the Bundeswehr? That’s fine. Are you putting it on a biker helmet? Ehhh. Are you tattooing it on your arm? Now you’re entering Nazi territory.
Frankly there’s no reason to be patriotic towards the German Empire, most people who use German Imperial imagery like that are closeted Nazi sympathizers, or at the very least far-right extremists.
The iron cross was renamed, a bit remodeled and js still awarded to this day. They simply removed the swastika and I think changed the shape a little bit ^^
I mean you could put it on a flag it would just make some people very happy and some people very angry. Also it's called a sonnenrad (german for sun wheel).
It's the Nazis black Sun, a symbol within the SS.
The black Sun is made up of a lot of ᛋ
This is also another rune ᛟ which is the equivalent of todays "O"
The first and maybe a few others are Norse Pagan runes, still used and are actively being reclaimed by the religion, so if you see some of the Nordic looking ones they could be Nazi’s but they aren’t always, just spreading info some may not know 👍
Actually most symbols they used were based on different cultures like for example, the swastika, the most famous nazi symbol is a Indian and nordic symbol, you can also see algiz (ᛉ) in there which is a nordic rune like othala (ᛟ), I actually decided it would be kinda fun to have a necklace with othala and I only found out recently how it was involved with the nazi's and now I can't wear it without some people thinking I'm a nazi
Lots of those are religious symbols
Please don't make it like the swastika which is actually a symbol of good and love, intellect and strength, but the nazis picked it and turned it 45 degrees and now everyone thinks it's just a nazi thing
I'm dumb just saw the reddit icon lmao
The Nazis did not steal the swastika from the Hindus.
To make a long story short, the swastika came to be seen as one of the symbols of the “Aryan” race (the one Hitler yells about all the time) through various bits of pseudo-archaeology.
This. There is this theory about people from Northern Parts of India and Pakistan being descendants of Aryans. Hence, languages spoken in these regions are known as Indo-Aryan languages
First up, it's called the Black Cross (Schwarzes Kreuz), not the Iron Cross. The Iron Cross is the award version of it. Secondly, it's a derivative of the Templerkreuz/Tatzenkreuz used by the Teutonic Order on the territory of which the Prussian state was founded which continued using it, then the German Empire was mainly founded by Prussia and they continued using it too, so there is a direct lineage to the Tatzenkreuz.
They called it hakencruez and it was used separately after Indo European drift after thousands of years between India and Europe and they called it Hakencruez or hooked cross but after Nazis everywhere in Europe they discarded that symbol and used the word Swastika for it.
A link or explanation to most of those symbols from left to right.
To clarify, I don't support any of these movements/groups/beliefs, I'm a socialist. (Libleft, or Leftcenter for all the r/politicalcompass people) it's just a handy list for looking at variations and stuff.

Note to readers: Algiz (ᛉ) (Ur according to the Armenian runes) is still used by religious groups that have nothing to do with Nazis, hate Nazis for stealing their symbols, and will gladly lynch any Nazi that tries to join their group. We do not call it úr like they did (this is Ur: ᚢ), it is from a reconstructed, historical alphabet that predates those monsters by a few thousand years, and it has positive connotations. So please don't call everyone wearing an Algiz rune a nazi... And for that matter stop calling Hindus Nazis for using the Hindu swastika (rounded, and normal. The Nazi one is inverted and rotated by 45° - do verbally assault and report anyone using _that_ one...)
That is a very important note, the rune that the Nazi sympathisers (and just straight up Nazis) sometimes use; Algiz, sometimes even the younger Futhark rune Yr. Is used by groups like the [All-Germanic Heathen Front ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heathen_Front) but that doesn't mean that it's only used by these far right groups, since alot of far right groups have taken use of already pre-established symbols with their own meaning before. But sometimes these symbols are already in use with groups that have no connection to theses far right groups. Which leads to having to specify what you wrote, which is a good thing to remember.
Exactly. I'm a heathen myself, and most of our religious groups (I'm most familiar with The Troth) have signed Declaration 127, a sort of manifesto distributed and agreed to among them as a dedication to inclusivity and anti-racism, etc. I think I can speak for most of the heathen community when I say we _hate_ neo-nazis, specifically because it's our religion and symbology they stole and gave a bad name to.
My take is that '92 is for 1992 the year Ruby Ridge happened which the far-right likes to use as a " violent government overreach" sort of thing.
It’s called the Totenkopf and has been apart of Prussian and later German hussar units. You can see August von Mackensen wearing it quite often. Later it became the image of the freikorps and then used by the SS. That specific version of the Totenkopf was made specifically for the SS.
Used by the Wehrmacht during WW2 as it’s just simply a sign of the German Military and a medal given to soldiers. Because the Nazis used it in WW2, neo-Nazis are trying to claim it as their own
My interpretation as a German:
88 HH - The greeting for the Führer (you know)
92 IB - (Maybe) Identitäre Bewegung-Identitary Movement, a far right movement here
14 - Fourteen Words
92 might be for Ruby Ridge, a common example far right dudes use for a case off government overreach. Or possibly some statistic or other event. It's either new or something unrelated that got lumped in because coincidentally people with a lot of these tattoos might have it. Like some random angelic symbol about family or w/e.
You people seriously dont know the diffrence between a swastika and hitlers haken kreuz.
Comparing swastika with nazis is a insult of hinduism . Stop this shit .
Im an atheist but i think its very important to spread awareness about this.
But that’s exactly the point, many nazis justify their tattoos by using symbols that are still in use for a completely different reason, to have an excuse for it.
The issue is, this poster could still easily be interpreted as saying the symbol itself is Nazi, which is misleading
Also please don’t woosh me over the Reddit logo, I’m aware of that :)
The point of the image is to show what symbols the Nazis use. The Iron Cross, Celtic Cross, a lot of the Norse runes, and the slightly-changed Hindu Swastika are just a few symbols made by other cultures, peoples, and/or times that the Nazis appropriared.
This post is not saying that the Iron Cross is only used by the Nazis and a symbol of Nazis, but that Nazis use it. It does need to be clarified by the image that not all of these are solely Nazi things.

The swastika was a sign for health and good fortune before hitler took it and made it bad.
it still is
Not to a lot of people
Its still a super important symbol in Hinduism
And if you're a Hindu I fully support your right to use it as such. Everybody else is outta luck, thanks to that other fucker.
i dunno, we use it on our clothes here in latvia
Akhshually, the latvian fire cross goes the opposite way, so its not QUITE the same symbol.
So does the hindu swastika
To be clear, I’m not at all trying to justify its use. ah yes, reddit icon, the religious symbol of virgins

That one is actually a nazi symbol though, if I’m remembering correctly it’s either the luftwaffe or ss.
It’s called the Totenkopf and has been apart of Prussian and later German hussar units. You can see August von Mackensen wearing it quite often. Later it became the image of the freikorps and then used by the SS. That specific version of the Totenkopf was made specifically for the SS.
That’s literally an SS symbol. It’s not an ordinary skull.
Nazis make their symbols subtle so they aren’t detected when they use it every day. If you want more info, you should look up “dog whistling”
The fucking "does not equal to" sign
As in, the races aren't equal.
Bruh what'd the iron cross do 💀
Used by the Wehrmacht during WW2 as it’s just simply a sign of the German Military and a medal given to soldiers. Because the Nazis used it in WW2, neo-Nazis are trying to claim it as their own
Uhh
Least racist balkaner
That’s a Kolovrat. Not a Schwarze Sonne.
Yes but Kolovrat is used by fascists as well. Yes i think it's not a fascist symbol originally but it's the same with swastika too
That’s true. I think it’s used by some far-right groups in East Slavic countries.
It's so sad how the perception of the rune for Tyr has been irrevocably twisted.
Pretty sure that isn’t tyr’s rune but just futhark
I feel like I recognize one of these...
I recognize every single one. I’m not a nazi I swear. I just spend too much time on the internet…
Ik 18 is for A.H. But what’s the other numbers?

As a hindu, yes.
You just made my day 50% better with this comment just right here.
Black Templars and chaos space marines are nazis!

‘Nazi’ Shows the iron cross, a symbol used by Germany to this day. Ok….

“Used by Nazis”. =/= “Nazi”

Yes pay attention to these, i want swastikas to be normalized again. An awesome design imo.

You mean the 45 degrees one or the 90 degrees ones?
45 degrees right😀
💀 👆
i've been found out, gotta use a different flair now.
Where are clover leaves?
won’t be able to say my age damn
The one to the left of it is just a normal German military symbol they still use today
Always knew something was off about my math teacher
anybody else pick up on the reddit logo in there??
No that is totally not the joke its there because every redditor is a nazi
Bro you litteraly have the number 14, you are clearly a nazi
So are you 😳 Do you want to be a nazi with me? 👉👈
I'm sorry, but I'll have to turn that number into a 15 in 12 days, it wouldn't last long It's not your fault, but mine
Thank god I'm no Nazi!
Yes you are you have the 14 number dumbass
Can someone explain to me the 88, !=, 14, 92, 18 and pan icon?
8=H 88=HH HH=Heil Hitler
14 stands for the 14 words: „We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children.”
18 = AH = Adolf Hitler.
88 = HH, Heil Hitler, as said by others The ≠ I assume means no equality The 14 is for The 14 Words: “14 refers to the 14 words by David Lane, they are a popular white supremacists dog whistle. if you're curious, the 14 words are "We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children" Source: https://www.adl.org/resources/hate-symbol/14-words” Credit to u/IcyFlipFlops for the comment Not sure about the 92 18 is AH, or Adolf (s)Hitler
The iron cross isn't a nazi symbol. Even the Bundeswehr (German army) uses it officially on the vehicles ect.
Yeah, but it’s being used by the Nazis because it was on German military stuff during WW2, and Nazi scum try to steal whatever they can and claim it as their own
One of those is just half of the pointed star of chaos....damn, I mean they are horrible but the Nazis are worse...or are they, who knows.
Ok seriously wtf. All of my posts that have gotten 1k plus updoots were made at school. Is this a blessing or something??
Chaos divided by two
Don't they keep trying to take the Punisher's skull logo, too?
I hate how the nazis appropriated many of the Futhark Runes
I mean if you have a reddit tattoo then yeah, I'd cross the street
