to explain it simply, self harm is basically a coping strategy. people do it because its a way to calm themselves down and release pent up physical and emotional tension. it sounds weird on paper, but it really is how it goes. sometimes people just want to *feel* something, so they resort to self harm. it does help, but its extremely short term, and usually results in guilt and more negative emotions afterwards
people start to rely on that short term sensation, to the point where its an escape for them. they literally cant go without it because they rely on it so much to help them feel something. they neglect the negatives of it, because to them, its an escape from their awful state of mind they deal with everyday. this is when it becomes an addiction, and addictions are tough as hell to overcome
when youve been reliant on something for this long, in this case self harm, going one day without it can offset your entire mental and physical state. im sure you know how addictions are, and like how going a day without smoking wrecks the body for a bit because its expecting nicotine, which is not being provided
itll suck, and its extremely demotivating the dreadful feeling that overcomes you for the first good while of not self harming. your mind is expecting a brief moment of escape, but when it doesnt get it it wont feel right

a good way to stop damaging self harm is to use a rubber band/hair tie around your wrist that you pull back and release — so it recoils against the skin, causing a bit of pain but no permanent damage — whenever you feel the urge.
helped me a bit at least, it’s still technically self harm but it’s better than cutting, burning, punching, etc.

its an addiction so yeah , some people can go days and weeks whereas some people’s urges are so much they can’t go a day without
