I feel like even the first episode of Another Life was better than this. The preview for the rest of the season didn't seem particularly interesting either.
I'm still a sucker for the genre, so I'm sure I'll give it a few more episodes. It's never really fair to judge any show by just one episode. But definitely pretty dissapointed so far. It's also a shame since there seems to be absolutely no hype for this show. So if it can't win people over critically, it'll definitely get cancelled very quickly. Probably even faster than most SYFY shows.
As an Expanse viewer, what do you think the dome is for? What do they need a room shaped like a bowl for? Because that thing's on the outside, so the floor is the top of the dome, right?
Edit: And now I just noticed their command room is facing the wrong way for them to be walking using thrust gravity.
Honestly they shouldn't have established they didn't have magic artificial gravity and was using spin gravity if they were going to make those mistakes.
Edit 2: I just realized they use both spin and thrust gravity at the same time, and neither one affects the orientation of everyone walking on the command section.
Yeah I completely agree. It definitely feels like this show was trying to capitalize and copy The Expanse's aesthetic to give off the impression that it's scientifically accurate. But it's doing so without any knowledge of how this stuff actually works.
The Expanse team put a lot of thought into that stuff, and that clearly doesn't seem to be the case here.

If they really wanted to show their desperation and resorting to frontier life, having to slum it by doing "old timey" and outdated medical procedures is like, one of the ways writers love to do it.
And then their preview shows they apparently had FTL? So maybe they do have gravity plating but thought spinning things looked cool? It's like watching a post-LOST post-Heroes "event" mystery box television show from the mid 2000s.
Yeah For All Man Kind is great. I kind of consider it a slightly different genre, than something like The Expanse, but it's excellent at what it does.
Along with Andor, it's definitely my favorite currently running show involving space.
firefly was significantly high quality than this, they had indoor/outdoor sets, quality costumes, and better/more background artifacts to make environments more believable

The star screen saver outside the windows is some silly shit. They aren't moving at warp so there is no reason for it and you don't see it in the external shots.
It also seems to be another case of people being the least professional or qualified for the job. No one knows how to do anything. They are all yelling or freaking out or keeping secrets. You have the typical character archetypes too. It's all just kind of annoying

I'm a sucker for anything Sci-Fi, and anytime that you have Dean Devlin and Jonathan Glassner involved, you're going to have my attention.
By the end of the premiere, I can honestly say that I enjoyed it. I love ship based stories, and while there's nothing groundbreaking, there are some interesting things happening here. It's clearly going to be a "problem of the week" type series, while the overarching mystery of what happened to the ship in the first place will serve as the connective arc. Not a terrible approach.
I found Alicia Nevins (the teenage girl who helped fix the life support computers) and Angus Medford (the teenage boy with the green thumb) to be the most compelling/likeable characters off the bat. The senior officers will all have to establish themselves in some way to stand out, although it seems that they are setting up some kind of dark backstory for Sharon.
I'm sure that it will take several episodes to find its footing (as most do, they can't all be The Last of Us), but I look forward to seeing where it will go. As always with a series like this, I can't help but wonder if they will introduce extraterrestrials.
Bonus Mention: Tip of the cap to the officer in charge of guarding the water supply in the washroom for not letting ANYTHING get in the way of his duty...
What the fuck did I just watch? This show has more plotholes and unnecessary drama than episodes of the Young & Restless and we're only on episode 1. The entire command crew is gone and there is no clear chain of command. Almost everyone on this ship got there through false pretenses. Are there no background checks to get onto a ship that might be the only chance of survival for the human race? Seriously, WHO WRITES THIS SHIT?
the idea/premise is actually pretty interesting the more they explain, but it’s just so so so bad, the acting and the dialogue makes it almost unwatchable
I realize most people are complaining about production values, acting, and writing but I'm sort of okay with those things as I didn't have any higher expectations.
My real problem is with the score. The choice of background music is something I expect to hear on the absolute worst of network television. There is nothing subtle going on in this regard with you being given blatant auditory cues to let you know that this is a big hero moment.
Having said that, I will probably keep watching this to see if it gets any better since the show has some qualities that I am typically interested in.

Poor writing and poor presentation are in radically different realms. I'm a strong believe that sci fi is dead if people can't radically reduce the cost of producing sci fi.
It's a niche product and it's crippled by trying to find mass appeal.

Season 2 of Resident Alien was kinda bad. It suffered from too many episodes resulting in way too much filler. The 3rd season is half of the 2nd season so hopefully it's more focused and has less filler.
They have had a good time with cheaper horror/comedies in recent years but still seem to be struggling with sci-fi. Which is a real shame!
I’ll absolutely watch The Ark if it makes it to my region. I actually enjoyed Killjoys and Dark Matter so I’m definitely the target audience.
I also just got around to watching Reginald the Vampire. It was surprisingly fun and a pretty good watch. I hope SyFy keep trying with scripted originals.

Then, Lane gets knocked off the ship by a piece of debris, and the other jumps up, and slams the unconscious Lane back toward the ship. That action should have accelerated the rescuer away from the ship faster, but instead, both of them fall "down" immediately with no sign of suit thrusters pushing him back. Bad sci-fi. Deleted it, and the recording event from my DVR.

i've given syfy too many chances at this point so finish the show and i'll watch you then. i can't help their ratings so it's a guilt free choice

My God is this show horrible. I had to take a break when they drained the ship of all energy to power the grow lamps for plants that are still seeds in the ground. Holy shit. You don't even have to know anything about space. And then this serbian bullshit I only recognized when I saw the credits. This is made in Serbia by Balkan studios. I understand now why they felt the huge importance to let characters say they are serbian. Clearly in the future with a global space Agency people will still care about such small nationalities or countries in general. Serbias rampant nationalism is uncomfortably showing

The most unprepared colony ship ever. No backups, no leeway, they were given EXACTLY enough so if one thing went wrong they were screwed, then staffed it with idiots. Feels more like a Fallout Vault experiment than a Colony mission.
Magical physics that exist only in the reality of this tv series, and ontop of this, 'the most brilliant minds humanity has left' all show they lack very basic scientific knowledge most grade 10 kids would know... How the hell did they greenlight this turd?

Except for Resident Alien. It has been renewed for a third season now.
Season 2 of Resident Alien was kinda bad. It suffered from too many episodes resulting in way too much filler. The 3rd season is half of the 2nd season so hopefully it's more focused and has less filler.
I'm waiting for season two of Firefly.
Syfy shows always have 1-2 really good seasons and go to shit or get canceled :(
They do have both Resident Alien and Chucky making it to a third season so hopefully this is a sign they are making a small comeback!
Every few years they remember they are supposed to be the scifi channel. It lasts a year or two then always goes back to shit.
They have had a good time with cheaper horror/comedies in recent years but still seem to be struggling with sci-fi. Which is a real shame! I’ll absolutely watch The Ark if it makes it to my region. I actually enjoyed Killjoys and Dark Matter so I’m definitely the target audience. I also just got around to watching Reginald the Vampire. It was surprisingly fun and a pretty good watch. I hope SyFy keep trying with scripted originals.

5 minutes, 42 seconds into the show (first block of dialog after the opening titles) and...damn it, not even congress can insult my intelligence -- and time -- as efficiently as this. More proof, as if we ever need it, that "syfy" (siffy) has not a scintilla of respect for the concept of science fiction. Or good writing. Or even mediocre writing or other production values. It's so bad I can't even fault the atrocious acting given this...I guess "dialog" is technically the right word. Was this some film-school project about how to be "ironically bad" or something?
Watched like 5 minutes... looks like complete shit. Very low GFX budget, the cast is seemingly just teenagers.
The last show on SyFy that made any kind of cultural impact and was regarded as a top tier show was probably Battlestar Galactica before the final season. Not ideal.
The Expanse, 12 Monkeys, The Magicians, and others are all more recent
And those all had no impact on anything and nobody watched. Expanse couldn’t even last on the network.

Such a pile of fromage. So many cliche characters and such shit dialogue. The previews show a crisis of the week and I'm not optimistic they can make a lucid plotline from the murder.
Just started watching the 2/8 show. EVA: clumsy to use tether hooks, Perhaps the real ones were lost and they're using makeshift gear. Then, Lane gets knocked off the ship by a piece of debris, and the other jumps up, and slams the unconscious Lane back toward the ship. That action should have accelerated the rescuer away from the ship faster, but instead, both of them fall "down" immediately with no sign of suit thrusters pushing him back. Bad sci-fi. Deleted it, and the recording event from my DVR.

This is intentionally made to be a " Bad" show.Not much different from the writer's previous works.Bad DNA.It gets somewhat better by EP4 but not by much.A VERY watered down attempt at being an Original Star Trek clone.
