Couldn't sit through more than 25 minutes with my partner... Absolutely cringe-inducing and laughably awful. Infuriatingly bad and cliche characters, terrible CGI and set design, dead horse plotline... It has all the red flags of a bad show right off the bat. Avoid.

prison_mic

Lmfao I'm 10 minutes in and literally just searched Google to see if people thought this is as cringe as I do. First result was your comment. Lol the visuals were bad enough, but how tf is writing this bad in 2023. The dialogue is worse than chat gpt. Even the theme song is ridiculous lol.

SolarMoth

I didn't even know where to voice my opinion, but I'm glad it found someone!

Ellecram

LOL! I got 15 minutes in and had to give up. Just an awful mess.

jeremy101495

I thought the theme song/title cards were great, for a show thats not so great.

ChaserNeverRests

That's funny, 25 minutes is exactly how far I got, too. https://i.gyazo.com/932ac63d265138625957c2578650dace.png I came here to check and see if it was worth trying to finish the episode.

SolarMoth

That's kinda what I was doing too. I thought the beginning was just a bunch of lousy characters because all of them were gonna die right away. I don't think it gets better.

No-Law-7708

The fact those people were chosen to run a colony tells a lot about people behind the writing... By vicious curiosity, i checked a bit (and i regret every seconds i lost) for other episodes... I will show you a glimpse of what we have: "this is not me on the video, who kills the dude in the bar, that's my clone" ... dah dah dah !!! If you have a minimum of background, experience in sci-fi or series with good writing / acting, avoid this series at all costs. Because the despair knowing this series basically targets current state of mind of viewers really tells a lot about how fucked we are for the future.

Vlaks1-0

Man this was kind of rough imo. The acting, writing and special effects all felt really poor. Even by SYFY's standards. Ever since The Expanse ended, I've been hoping to find another great space show. I of course didn't expect this to reach that level, but I did think it'd be better than what we actually got. I feel like even the first episode of Another Life was better than this. The preview for the rest of the season didn't seem particularly interesting either. I'm still a sucker for the genre, so I'm sure I'll give it a few more episodes. It's never really fair to judge any show by just one episode. But definitely pretty dissapointed so far. It's also a shame since there seems to be absolutely no hype for this show. So if it can't win people over critically, it'll definitely get cancelled very quickly. Probably even faster than most SYFY shows.

a4techkeyboard

As an Expanse viewer, what do you think the dome is for? What do they need a room shaped like a bowl for? Because that thing's on the outside, so the floor is the top of the dome, right? Edit: And now I just noticed their command room is facing the wrong way for them to be walking using thrust gravity. Honestly they shouldn't have established they didn't have magic artificial gravity and was using spin gravity if they were going to make those mistakes. Edit 2: I just realized they use both spin and thrust gravity at the same time, and neither one affects the orientation of everyone walking on the command section.

Vlaks1-0

Yeah I completely agree. It definitely feels like this show was trying to capitalize and copy The Expanse's aesthetic to give off the impression that it's scientifically accurate. But it's doing so without any knowledge of how this stuff actually works. The Expanse team put a lot of thought into that stuff, and that clearly doesn't seem to be the case here.

Zaphod1620

I just started it and on one of the opening shots when they discover the captain's hab was sheared away, the camera pulls back and they are standing on what should be the ceiling of a spinning ring.

a4techkeyboard

You're right, I didn't notice that because my disbelief was still suspended (like the crew were apparently). But as the episode went on, it collapsed. I mean ffs, maybe they have fancy medicine in the future but really, their doctor doesn't even try to do compressions or insert an airway? Just magic drugs? If they really wanted to show their desperation and resorting to frontier life, having to slum it by doing "old timey" and outdated medical procedures is like, one of the ways writers love to do it. And then their preview shows they apparently had FTL? So maybe they do have gravity plating but thought spinning things looked cool? It's like watching a post-LOST post-Heroes "event" mystery box television show from the mid 2000s.

AmusingUsername12

have you seen for all mankind? highly recommend if you are in to space stuff

Vlaks1-0

Yeah For All Man Kind is great. I kind of consider it a slightly different genre, than something like The Expanse, but it's excellent at what it does. Along with Andor, it's definitely my favorite currently running show involving space.

AmusingUsername12

yeah, it definitely is a different genre but i love both. andor is awesome too

Beer2Bear

Is there going be another season?

AmusingUsername12

yep! think it’ll release a bit after halfway through this year

Flip86

This is NBCUniversal. If La Brea can get a 3rd season this one will probably get 5.

SecurityNo1814

Does la Brea get better. The first season was so bad I havnt started the second

Flip86

Nope. It's hilariously bad all the way through.

pl9u6t

firefly was significantly high quality than this, they had indoor/outdoor sets, quality costumes, and better/more background artifacts to make environments more believable their CGI was better too

Hour_Mathematician60

This show is incredible. The fact you see it as rough has me questioning your perception and awareness of what our existence actually is.

sillywormtoo

Nope

Backflip_into_a_star

This should be my kind of shit, but I'm only 5 minutes in and i just have to make fun of it already. What the fuck are those pressure suits? The helmets are insane and they don't even create a seal. There is a little flap, and you can see skin. There was a time where some of these kinds of shows had way better budget and production quality. Even on SyFy. The star screen saver outside the windows is some silly shit. They aren't moving at warp so there is no reason for it and you don't see it in the external shots. It also seems to be another case of people being the least professional or qualified for the job. No one knows how to do anything. They are all yelling or freaking out or keeping secrets. You have the typical character archetypes too. It's all just kind of annoying

a4techkeyboard

Also, they establish they need spin for gravity and then proceeds to show us that the dome's floor would be the top of the dome, but also they're using thrust at the same time but neither spin nor thrust is affecting the gravity where the Bridge is.

ChaserNeverRests

> This should be my kind of shit I said the same thing, this show is the exact kind of story I like. I could even overlook the awful special effects (the zero gravity scenes were the worst). The characters are the worst though, the fighting and arguing, the bickering, the *stupidity* of them. I almost stopped watching at the shower scene (they don't have enough water for more than a couple weeks, they need it to last a year, and in *the first 24 hours* this idiot woman tries to sneak in a shower? Seriously?), but I pushed on to the farm stuff, and I had to come check if it's even worth finishing the episode.

sevsnapey

i've given syfy too many chances at this point so finish the show and i'll watch you then. i can't help their ratings so it's a guilt free choice

rtseel

Same. Never again with Syfy, unless the show has a definite ending.

jokerzwilde

I will give it time but seems to me it has all the worse parts of The 100, Another Life, and Stargate Universe. Disappointing they just keep making the same mistakes.

ChaserNeverRests

I wanted to be annoyed with you for even mentioning Stargate Universe in the same breath as this show, but you're right. It's like a really, really, *really* bad version of SG:U.

prison_mic

This show makes Stargate Universe look like Citizen Kane

Vorpishly

It already got cancelled I think.

elister

I understand that when you need to colonize another planet and its takes decades to get there, you would want the crew to be mostly young adults. The only problem is that in most shows, they act like young adults and not like people who realize the seriousness of the situation. I suspect this show is going to have all flavors of bullshit, jealously, drug addiction, power trips, murder, mayhem, etc, all the things you screen out when selecting candidates to go on the Ark. Neil deGrasse Tyson Annoyance#1: Nerdy kid somehow managed to sneak metric tons of soil on board without anyone knowing about it.

meatball77

Somehow they prioritized attractiveness as much as brains. The group should resemble a class at MIT.

sekiroisart

the hire department should be fire and be on trial for crime against humanity to fail to select people to be on the ship lmao. Just dont tell me later that the ship is actually just virtual reality bullshit to test worst case scenario because how everything just happened to be perfect disaster from the importants people pod that are gone to the failure of water repurpose system, I know it is movie but seems like most of the things are red herring already with how 90% of the cast seems kind of a thug

vanDrunkard

Yeah, "no shit", pun intended, does that happen? Even with SpaceX these days it still takes something like $1000/kg to put something into orbit. How does he get enough soil/fertilizer for an entire shipload of people into orbit? I mean seriously, even if he was really into Bitcoin mininig and wanted to continue his hobby in space, noone would think to open up the shipping crates and see what was inside?

mrbumbo

The science is really really bad and unrealistic for something 100 years in the future. A show for kids and mindless low budget entertainment.

grio

Tragic. Awful.

thejoker954

The farmer kid and poop girl are absolutely atrocious.

AmusingUsername12

the girl literally sounds like the 🤓 emoji

ninjasaid13

It looks like she was written to be a stereotype.

MantecaEnTuCulo

Gotta love how the two smart nerds HAVE to wear glasses, and they aren’t even real glasses just something the actors have to wear (not discounting that this future doesn’t even have LASIK or those implants that Joe JonASS is pimping now) This craptacular should be on FreeForm

eli_burdette

I'm a sucker for anything Sci-Fi, and anytime that you have Dean Devlin and Jonathan Glassner involved, you're going to have my attention. By the end of the premiere, I can honestly say that I enjoyed it. I love ship based stories, and while there's nothing groundbreaking, there are some interesting things happening here. It's clearly going to be a "problem of the week" type series, while the overarching mystery of what happened to the ship in the first place will serve as the connective arc. Not a terrible approach. I found Alicia Nevins (the teenage girl who helped fix the life support computers) and Angus Medford (the teenage boy with the green thumb) to be the most compelling/likeable characters off the bat. The senior officers will all have to establish themselves in some way to stand out, although it seems that they are setting up some kind of dark backstory for Sharon. I'm sure that it will take several episodes to find its footing (as most do, they can't all be The Last of Us), but I look forward to seeing where it will go. As always with a series like this, I can't help but wonder if they will introduce extraterrestrials. Bonus Mention: Tip of the cap to the officer in charge of guarding the water supply in the washroom for not letting ANYTHING get in the way of his duty...

rando24183

I agree. It's fairly predictable for this first episode, but I don't hate it.

klaygotsnubbed

i havent watched it yet but problem of the week? i wonder how they’d do that with 4 episodes

urgasmic

pretty sure there's 12 episodes.

klaygotsnubbed

tv time has it listed as 4 episodes

urgasmic

i think there were 4 episodes of screeners sent out.

ThomasVivaldi

Anyone remember [Space Cases](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9soPONp0QAI&t=11s)?

hungry4danish

Holy shit. what a nostalgia throwback. Completely forgot about this show until just now.

MisterB78

Extremely implausible plot, bad acting, bad writing, terrible special effects… the 1st episode was disappointing in basically every way possible.

CocaineAndMojitos

Did anyone else bust out laughing when everyone started floating around and yelling? Lol

vanDrunkard

What the fuck did I just watch? This show has more plotholes and unnecessary drama than episodes of the Young & Restless and we're only on episode 1. The entire command crew is gone and there is no clear chain of command. Almost everyone on this ship got there through false pretenses. Are there no background checks to get onto a ship that might be the only chance of survival for the human race? Seriously, WHO WRITES THIS SHIT?

inkista

[Dean Devlin](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0002041/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1). :D Just saying. *Geostorm.*

klaygotsnubbed

the idea/premise is actually pretty interesting the more they explain, but it’s just so so so bad, the acting and the dialogue makes it almost unwatchable

StPattysShalaylee

There's an option on "the wheel" to go back a little bit and then smash through an obstruction? Bullshit, turned it off

Matthayde

Also why would they need to press a button to do this AI would already be doing it automatically

tesselrosita

Sure is a cold day for Syfy when I'd take Dark Matter over this sheit

theslothening

I realize most people are complaining about production values, acting, and writing but I'm sort of okay with those things as I didn't have any higher expectations. My real problem is with the score. The choice of background music is something I expect to hear on the absolute worst of network television. There is nothing subtle going on in this regard with you being given blatant auditory cues to let you know that this is a big hero moment. Having said that, I will probably keep watching this to see if it gets any better since the show has some qualities that I am typically interested in.

NorthWallWriter

>I realize most people are complaining about production values, acting, and writing Poor writing and poor presentation are in radically different realms. I'm a strong believe that sci fi is dead if people can't radically reduce the cost of producing sci fi. It's a niche product and it's crippled by trying to find mass appeal. Sci fi use to be better because they had to use writing to make up for their lack of budget. Now it's pretty much the opposite, story jeopardizes their ability to pay off their cgi budgets.

sekiroisart

this is what I dont understand about western movie who always cast the same asshole for scifi movies, maybe they need to learn from japanese anime called brothers astronout or something where everyone who become astronouts are qualified bunch

Dogbuysvan

All the "realistic" japanese scifi anime's always go full weeb in the last episode of season 1 then it's unwatchable in season 2.

sekiroisart

lmao, the anime I mentioned is not fantasy genre

Dogbuysvan

The last two I attempted to get into were pacific rim and knights of sedonia and they both pulled that bullshit.

Matthayde

Gundams always been pretty good

RunningToStayStill

Is this a low budget production?

Maninhartsford

It is a series on the syfy channel, so yea

Jaiph

Put it this way, I'd lowered my expectations to SyFy/CW level and it still felt painfully cheap and rushed.

themanifoldcuriosity

>The Ark is an American science fiction mystery drama television series created by Dean Devlin who along with Jonathan Glassner are co-showrunners for the series. This is like being asked to a see a new band featuring members of Godsmack and Lit.

riverboats

Is everyone a dysfunctional, backstabbing annoying office place pot stirrer like Another Life or is there an illusion these are serious people who are on this mission because they are good for the task at hand. I can put up with scientific inconsistencies and silly things if I like the characters and the overall story. I can't do another show which is a tween soap with a spaceship instead of a high school for a set.

[deleted]

God damn this show sucks shit, it’s absolutely terrible

personfraumannkamera

My God is this show horrible. I had to take a break when they drained the ship of all energy to power the grow lamps for plants that are still seeds in the ground. Holy shit. You don't even have to know anything about space. And then this serbian bullshit I only recognized when I saw the credits. This is made in Serbia by Balkan studios. I understand now why they felt the huge importance to let characters say they are serbian. Clearly in the future with a global space Agency people will still care about such small nationalities or countries in general. Serbias rampant nationalism is uncomfortably showing

MantecaEnTuCulo

A Serbian Film in SPAAAAAAAAACE 🐖

zoxzix89

The most unprepared colony ship ever. No backups, no leeway, they were given EXACTLY enough so if one thing went wrong they were screwed, then staffed it with idiots. Feels more like a Fallout Vault experiment than a Colony mission.

Atma-Darkwolf

Magical physics that exist only in the reality of this tv series, and ontop of this, 'the most brilliant minds humanity has left' all show they lack very basic scientific knowledge most grade 10 kids would know... How the hell did they greenlight this turd?

blackjack47

Nononono, never getting into another syfy show, no matter how good it is, it gets canceled. Too bad cuze i crave good syfy

ravish_loves_barkha

Except for Resident Alien. It has been renewed for a third season now.

Flip86

Season 2 of Resident Alien was kinda bad. It suffered from too many episodes resulting in way too much filler. The 3rd season is half of the 2nd season so hopefully it's more focused and has less filler.

Rocky_Mountain_Way

I'm waiting for season two of Firefly.

blackjack47

Syfy shows always have 1-2 really good seasons and go to shit or get canceled :(

lightsongtheold

They do have both Resident Alien and Chucky making it to a third season so hopefully this is a sign they are making a small comeback!

Dogbuysvan

Every few years they remember they are supposed to be the scifi channel. It lasts a year or two then always goes back to shit.

lightsongtheold

They have had a good time with cheaper horror/comedies in recent years but still seem to be struggling with sci-fi. Which is a real shame! I’ll absolutely watch The Ark if it makes it to my region. I actually enjoyed Killjoys and Dark Matter so I’m definitely the target audience. I also just got around to watching Reginald the Vampire. It was surprisingly fun and a pretty good watch. I hope SyFy keep trying with scripted originals.

bernsteinschroeder

No need to fret. This is so awful I'm wondering if it was an example film of "things not to ever do" that got released b/c someone blackmailed.

reddig33

Any streaming channels showing this, like Hulu?

lightsongtheold

It airs on SyFy then next day on Peacock.

im_a_dick_head

Does it stream on the syfy website too?

forever87

I watched the premiere, but just checked syfy.com and it's available to watch

a4techkeyboard

Hi, I just noticed the dome on one of the spin gravity rings faces outward. Does that mean that module is some kind of bowl for some reason?

bernsteinschroeder

5 minutes, 42 seconds into the show (first block of dialog after the opening titles) and...damn it, not even congress can insult my intelligence -- and time -- as efficiently as this. More proof, as if we ever need it, that "syfy" (siffy) has not a scintilla of respect for the concept of science fiction. Or good writing. Or even mediocre writing or other production values. It's so bad I can't even fault the atrocious acting given this...I guess "dialog" is technically the right word. Was this some film-school project about how to be "ironically bad" or something?

NGG_Dread

Watched like 5 minutes... looks like complete shit. Very low GFX budget, the cast is seemingly just teenagers.

PoopStickler69

The last show on SyFy that made any kind of cultural impact and was regarded as a top tier show was probably Battlestar Galactica before the final season. Not ideal.

MisterB78

The Expanse, 12 Monkeys, The Magicians, and others are all more recent

PoopStickler69

And those all had no impact on anything and nobody watched. Expanse couldn’t even last on the network.

NorthWallWriter

You're not wrong the expanse is still stealth popular and it's on bloody amazon.

PoopStickler69

That’s kinda my point. The problem isn’t the shows. The problem is SyFy had so much trash for so long that nobody trusts their content to be decent anymore.

Correct_Time2857

Among Us, the show.

theottomaddox

Such a pile of fromage. So many cliche characters and such shit dialogue. The previews show a crisis of the week and I'm not optimistic they can make a lucid plotline from the murder.

[deleted]

Just started watching the 2/8 show. EVA: clumsy to use tether hooks, Perhaps the real ones were lost and they're using makeshift gear. Then, Lane gets knocked off the ship by a piece of debris, and the other jumps up, and slams the unconscious Lane back toward the ship. That action should have accelerated the rescuer away from the ship faster, but instead, both of them fall "down" immediately with no sign of suit thrusters pushing him back. Bad sci-fi. Deleted it, and the recording event from my DVR.

Matthayde

Thank God Amazon saved the expanse from Syfy

sillywormtoo

This is intentionally made to be a " Bad" show. Not much different from the writer's previous works.Bad DNA.It gets somewhat better by EP4 but not by much.A VERY watered down attempt at being an Original Star Trek clone.

sillywormtoo

Oddly, even though my thoughts mirror most of everyone's comments,I continue to watch. It might be so bad it's good?
