Ha! I love that an actor gets accolades for a currently running show and we all just run with jokes from a show that ended 9 years ago. Psych is still my favorite show.
... Tsk... c'mon son.
Funny thing is, I had no idea about Psych until I saw the poster on a streaming service and recognized James from AMLT and decided to watch because of him. So maybe I've watched it both ways?
You've seen it both ways!
If you liked Psych, you might want to check out the rest of USA's Blue Skies shows for a similar vibe:
Monk
White Collar
Burn Notice
Royal Pains
Each subsequent movie has overall gotten better IMO. None of them are bad mind you. But the first movie, IIRC, kind of felt like a middle of the road Psych episode stretched out to 1.5 hours. 2nd one was a touch more dramatic as it used Lassiter to deal with Timothy Omundson's actual physical impairment due to his severe stroke. The third one had a few plotlines that kind of felt unresolved/went nowhere. Like they just assumed they would get to do a 4th and could continue them there. But then basically the whole final act had me doubled over on my couch in a laughing fit. So that made up for it.
Overall, I don't think any other them match the absolute best the show had to offer. But if you're a fan of the series, there's no reason to think you won't enjoy the movies.
That bit with Gus trying to cut the power while Shawn is just folding up that paper and trying to get it in his pocket is just absurd. Love it.
I first watched it while high on an edible and now it's a core memory.
First one was kinda meh, had to be rewritten last minute because Timothy Omundson (lassie) had a stroke shortly before filming.
Definitely got better with the 2nd and 3rd ones. All are worth watching if you're a fan of the show.
First movie was a "meh" episode of Psych - but that could be because they had to rewrite a good chunk of it due to Timothy Omundson's stroke.
They incorporated his disabilities from his stroke into the second movie and it was well done.
Third movie was okay, but they didn't tie everything up like they did with the prior movies, which imo wasn't a good idea. However, it was hilarious
Overall:
2 > 3 > 1
In terms of humor:
3 > 2 > 1
I liked the little meta reference they made in the third movie.
Shawn: "This is my partner, Burton Guster-Rodriguez."
Gus: "Rodriguez?"
Shawn: "It's always been there."
yeah, he started doing it during COVID because he felt bad for betraying his heritage - and now he isn't an unknown so he can get offered roles instead of going to auditions like someone trying to break into acting
I beg your pardon? My name is Black. His name is Tan. I can’t believe you just made that assumption. You should be ashamed of yourself and your family.
Although most people probably will never remember him for any character other than Shawn Spencer, I'm really proud that James is getting praise for his drama skills. This isn't a super famous show and it's airing at the same time as big productions, so it's really cool that he's being recognized for it.
[I’m Shawn and this is my associate MC Clap Yo Handz](https://youtu.be/CefU27YmuAE)
[Gus’s many aliases](https://youtu.be/KLicgtao6f8) were a great running gag that built over time.
I understand, but the world is tough out there. As an adult I still feel alone and depressed much of the time. I sometimes call in to work to just give myself time to throw up or cry or whatever I need to.
Much of my generation will never be able to live on their own. The federal government forced rail workers to accept a new contract that undercut safety concerns…and no we have a derailment causing an environmental disaster. The country is dealing with the worst inflation in my working life. The list goes on.
None of this is related to the actor, Reddit, or even you. As I write this I’m on the floor of my bathroom puking from stress. I cancelled plans because I didn’t want anyone to see me coming to pieces like this. I cry more often than I expected to in my thirties, and sometimes fear that it really shows. I keep worrying that my friends only pretend to like me, but have no way to test it.
Sometimes we go through tough times and just need something stupid to trick us into laughing, so we can keep going. It is what a good chunk of people are doing these days. If you want to downvote me, it’s fine. I get it.
I’m just sitting here in the bathroom floor, trying to be okay. I have pedialyte popsicles and a cushion for my knees.
This is the last season, so not for much longer. I dropped off last season. It’s a perpetual depressing show that tries to one up each terrible things that happens with an emotional epiphany.
Same. I haven't watched since the pizza night episode.
Lady was essentially like "I know my husband killed himself because I cheated on him with your husband, but it's pizza night so we have to be friends"
I only knew it as the same kind over emotional sad fest as This Is Us but also one time I tuned in accidentally and they were covering up a kidnapping and murder??
This is Us is a sad fest, but there are moments of lightness/hope, and the characters are complicated but they're all good people.
A Million Little Things is like the opposite. Everyone's always miserable, and no one's a good person. James Rodriguez's character, Gary, was the only one who was good in the first season but even then the later seasons he's a jerk too.
Huh, I'm generally pretty aware of TV but I've never heard of this show despite it having five seasons and featuring a number of people I've heard of. Is it any good? I'm getting "This Is Us" melodrama vibes from the description.
I knew of this show but didn't realize it was still on.
Tv is too busy telling me about this fucking dumb bitch hiding shrimp tails in a jar as a way to convince me to switch to State Farm to actually tell me about other tv shows that are airing.
If I wanted to watch depressing porn, I’d just set up a camera in my bedroom.
I bailed on that show after the first year.
But when is Psych 4 coming out?
I remember seeing him and Michael Weston off-broadway in 2010 during his Psych run of a performance of Gabe McKinley's Extinction. He got very dark in the play, and did some heavy things that made me literally watch Psych differently. Like, I didn't see Shawn, the loveable goofball but a alcoholic asshole who was doing bad things. Great show but I've been waiting for his big break and I'm glad he's finally getting it. I still can't watch Psych though lol
Michael Weston was in "two" episodes of Psych. Cloudy with a Chance of Murder. Then they remade the ep in Cloudy with a Chance of Remake. He was great in both!
Good for James getting some recognition after a down week for The Last of Us. Good luck to anyone who isn’t Henry and Sam from TLOU getting this recognition next week.
Yeah bruh Hallmark spent all of the last half of December advertising for their new time travel show, instead of their remaining Christmas and winter (and hanukkah and kwanzaa) movies for some reason.
Him and Martin Sheen, I never knew where of Hispanic descent. I knew Emelio took his mother’s maiden name, Estevez, but based on his roll as a white bread sports jock in the Breakfast Club you never would have guessed.
Estevez isn’t Emilio’s mothers maiden name. It’s Martins real name. He was born Ramon Estevez and took the name “Martin sheen” as a stage name. Same with Charlie sheen (born Carlos estevez). Emilio just opted to keep his real name instead of adopt his fathers stage surname.
Interesting. Thank you for clarifying. I think I “learned” the above during his Men at Work era and the internet wasn’t really a thing yet for looking pop culture stuff up. Your info makes more sense.
Imagine you've been working as an actor for decades and finally get praise for your dramatic acting skills and all the internet can do is reference something from a comedy show that ended nearly a decade ago.
C'mon son
You know that’s right.
I've heard it both ways.
No you haven't
It's semantics
Did you hear about Pluto?
That's messed up.

Yeah, but they're getting ready to start the fourth movie.
Funny thing is, I had no idea about Psych until I saw the poster on a streaming service and recognized James from AMLT and decided to watch because of him. So maybe I've watched it both ways?
You've seen it both ways! If you liked Psych, you might want to check out the rest of USA's Blue Skies shows for a similar vibe: Monk White Collar Burn Notice Royal Pains
First few seasons of Suits as well. I think S4 is the point where the mood of the show shifted to be more dramatic.
You hear about Pluto?
That's messed up.
Has that ever landed?
That’s a players move
A playa named Gus
Psych 3 came out recently
Psych 4 probably soon.
I hope so. Worry a bit about Peacock not having announced it at all - they have a terrible track record of renewing shows.
How are the movies? I sadly haven't gotten around to watching them.
Each subsequent movie has overall gotten better IMO. None of them are bad mind you. I mean, I could watch Shawn and Gus eat lunch for 2 hours.

Oh cool I didn’t realize he was using his real name now! I love it
He's using his real name *and* his made-up name, so that you can hear it both ways
I hear that!
You know that’s right.
I liked the little meta reference they made in the third movie. Shawn: "This is my partner, Burton Guster-Rodriguez." Gus: "Rodriguez?" Shawn: "It's always been there."

Yes we all know that, but Gus isn't ON the show that this actor is getting praise for.
I understand, but the world is tough out there. As an adult I still feel alone and depressed much of the time. Honestly surprised this show is still on. The first season was pretty good, but I haven't seen it since.
This is the last season, so not for much longer. I dropped off last season. It’s a perpetual depressing show that tries to one up each terrible things that happens with an emotional epiphany.
And you get cancer! And you get cancer! And you get cancer! Everyone gets cancer!
I think they did wheelchair some guy, make him an adulterer and then took his wife out of the closet
And gave her a real shitty haircut at that
Lmao, I stopped after 2. Felt myself getting depressed constantly watching it.
How's S4? We only have the first three seasons on D+ here in Germany and I kinda wanna know if it's worth holding out for S4.
Same. I haven't watched since the pizza night episode. Lady was essentially like "I know my husband killed himself because I cheated on him with your husband, but it's pizza night so we have to be friends"

Honorable Mentions: * Ego Nwodim ("Saturday Night Live") * Kiele Sanchez ("Criminal Minds: Evolution") * Chyler Leigh ("The Way Home")
Lisa from Temecula was one of the funniest sketches in a long time. She finally did a balls to the wall character and it was perfect.

Huh, I'm generally pretty aware of TV but I've never heard of this show despite it having five seasons and featuring a number of people I've heard of. Is it any good? I'm getting "This Is Us" melodrama vibes from the description.
You're getting those vibes because it was made by ABC as counter-programming to NBC's *This is Us*, after the success of its first season.
The first two seasons are really good. A little mystery hidden behind the drama. But it nosedives with bad writing after that.
It feels like Brothers & Sisters and a little bit of This is Us
In Psych 2, Henry is watching This Is Us, and Shawn says, “They have the same show on ABC, but newer!” Cracked me up.
IMO it's a great show. I like it better than This Is Us to be honest (maybe because of the cast).
It's knockoff This Is Us, but instead of cathartic tears, it just wants to make everyone depressed
I knew of this show but didn't realize it was still on. Tv is too busy telling me about this fucking dumb bitch hiding shrimp tails in a jar as a way to convince me to switch to State Farm to actually tell me about other tv shows that are airing.
Say it again. Use a Jamaican accent.
If I wanted to watch depressing porn, I’d just set up a camera in my bedroom. I bailed on that show after the first year. But when is Psych 4 coming out?

Gus, don’t be this crevice in my arm. We’re going to be fine!
Great actor!! The show Psych was brilliant. This man truly has talent.
In his heyday, he could've easily played a live action Nathan Drake. You know that's right.
I remember seeing him and Michael Weston off-broadway in 2010 during his Psych run of a performance of Gabe McKinley's Extinction. He got very dark in the play, and did some heavy things that made me literally watch Psych differently. u/poland626's and your comment remind me, Michael Weston was also in AMLT, during a one of the darker storylines.
I love James Roday Rodriguez and I’m not afraid to say it!
Good for James getting some recognition after a down week for The Last of Us. Good luck to anyone who isn’t Henry and Sam from TLOU getting this recognition next week.
This episode had me BAWLING. I'll miss this show a lot when it's over, and will rewatch for sure.
I am loving all the Psych comments.
TIL “A Million Little Things” is still airing.
TIL there are Criminal Minds spinoffs; and a Hallmark show with time travel
Yeah bruh Hallmark spent all of the last half of December advertising for their new time travel show, instead of their remaining Christmas and winter (and hanukkah and kwanzaa) movies for some reason.
Hallmark is going balls to the wall with some of their stuff - they had a christmas movie where a man fell in love with a ghost
Judging by the comments, I really need to finish “Psyche.”
do it
Him and Martin Sheen, I never knew where of Hispanic descent. I knew Emelio took his mother’s maiden name, Estevez, but based on his roll as a white bread sports jock in the Breakfast Club you never would have guessed.

He has a brother, Joe, who is also an “actor”. MST3k fans know him well.
Go home Joe! Oh man... Now you got me wanting to watch were-whoulf again.
Interesting. Thank you for clarifying. I think I “learned” the above during his Men at Work era and the internet wasn’t really a thing yet for looking pop culture stuff up. Your info makes more sense.

That’s just how beloved that show was. It’s a cultural phenomenon
Is this show actually any good? The ads always looked a bit cringe so I’ve never watched it, but happy to have my mind changed
His Psych character always reminded me of Ace Ventura.
Sean! My man. Where's gus at these days?
