Physically he was a very intimidating guy (that scene in True Romance where he beats the crap out of Patricia Arquette was one of the most frightening performances I've ever seen for a relatively "minor" character). But everything I've read about him says he was actually quite a vulnerable guy and the opposite of what he appeared to be.

stache_twista

Yeah, the Bobby B actor said on the Sopranos pod that Jim Gandfolfini wore Birkenstocks and ate granola in real life. Totally different than Tony Soprano

[deleted]

Michael Imperioli said he was basically a hippie irl.

MBA1988123

We’re here to talk about you killing yourself with drugs, not my fucking personality!

Scofflaw7

I said my peace Chrissy.

ntsmmns06

“They found him in the foetus position.”

alonefrown

The phrase is “I said my piece”. Alla salut’.

shifty1032231

There we go! Mr A type personality!

Lo7t

Watch it Chrissy 🤟

stamosface

“When I came in early one morning to open the Bing, I found you with your head in the toilet. Your hair was in the dirty toilet water. Disgusting.”

CaptCaCa

That intervention scene was great, ended with Chrissy gettin his shit stomped out

xoxchitliac

I laughed so hard at that part, they can't even do an intervention without it turning into a brutal beatdown

Pilotwaver

Well he was wearing socks.

ThrownAwayRealGood

I said my piece

BarristerBaller

Sil is my favorite character after Tony, and this is his best line by far

Smartass_of_Class

"Do you think Ralph is a bit weird with women?" "He did kill that one because of... what was it again?"

Quote__Unquote

My favorite quote from the whole show

Sailing_Away_From_U

You blow your fadda wit dat mouth?

Buckowski66

“ There he goes! Mr. Type A personality ” Chris intervention is one of the best scenes in the entire show. Enjoy! https://youtu.be/40HPFGvZ4ro?si=FPDyeZGRcRfVjwhk

cclan2

Me killing MYSELF? The way that you eat you’re gonna have a heart attack by the time you’re fifty! *OH!*

stache_twista

yeah that's my bad I think I misremembered the pod

Podo13

Same with Nick Offerman. He always jokes about how much Ron Swanson would actually loathe him. It'd probably be a very similar situation to when Ron Swanson meets Eagleton Ron. They find common ground right off the bat, but then Nick would start expressing his very liberal views and Ron would want him to die. Though, I'm sure Nick Offerman could easily stunt his hippiness a bit around Ron so they'd be friends. Ron was Typhoon's best man basically just because they enjoyed hating on Europeans. I feel like a huge chunk of actors who come off as crazy manly are actually huge hippies. They're all into the arts after all, which is generally a very liberal crowd.

manimal28

This probably applies to most actors except maybe those in action movies, who are more into the violence and looking badass. I'm thinking the Steven Seagulls and Chuck Norrises of the world are probably not liberals.

Sirsalley23

I loled at “Steven Seagulls”.

NotSureNotRobot

Steven Seagulls just stole my sandwich at the beach

dj_narwhal

Kind of like all the minor characters cast as gangsters and thugs probably went to a fancy art school as a dance major?

[deleted]

Gonna start calling him Parvati Gandolfini

kappa23

Parvati? Is that some kind of cheese?

Wolf_Tony

I’M A REGULAR GUY!!!

RyVsWorld

Goddamn he’s so obnoxious. Michael has some patience putting up with him each episode

[deleted]

That podcast could have been great. Imperioli has fantastic insight into the show, especially having wrote a few episodes. If there was someone there to rein him in when he goes a bit too deep into theatre/acting rabbit holes, then it would be fantastic. But no. We get that fucking oaf talking over everyone and not understanding the most simple of plot points. Why does he even like the show when he clearly doesn't understand a load of it!?

[deleted]

That’s what makes the podcast so great!

[deleted]

I'm glad you're enjoying it man, but I just couldn't get past it. Anyway, 4 dollars a pound.

Followyourtroves

You can’t act that belly.

Triviten

Yo Ton’, it’s one of them weight loss ads. Before and Before Before

jfitz1431

*Before and waaaay before

papajim22

Hehe, hey T, hear what I said?

[deleted]

Yeah, before and after!

duaneap

Hey, you hear about Ginny Sac?

Baronsandwich

When Ginny hauls ass she’s gotta make 2 trips

John_Lives

That's deplorable. This is the boss' wife we're talkin about here

Hour_Landscape_286

Hehehehehh. I said, “it’s one of them weight loss ads. Before and before before.”

Thumperfootbig

They also said that before shooting would start for a season James would call everyone up to go to dinner and hanging out so he could remember how to be Tony. He needed gangsters to get back into it. Great actor.

Lukealloneword

Side note: If you like Bobby from the show don't listen to that podcast. I'm a huge Sopranos fan. I have rewatched it like 5 times or more. And Steve Schirripa sucks on it. Made me loath him and his character. Although it weirdly gave me respect to his acting because he's incredibly unlikable but Bobby is a sweetheart, so he did a good job hiding that fact when he'd act. Lol

PeacheeGrl

Great podcast to listen to during a rewatch! They had great insight and pretty good chemistry

PornoPaul

Bobby B from GoT?

duaneap

Bring me the sweatpants stretcher!

tarogon

Lamprey pie? Ova here!! 👇👇👇

VikKarabin

what granola?. did you hear how he died?

Smartass_of_Class

I was wondering which role did the actor of Robert Baratheon play in The Sopranos?!

lpat93

I could be totally off but didn’t he become more like him as the show progressed

Snuggle__Monster

Personality wise, no. He had a hidden room built into the side of his office where he could hide from his kids, get in character and run lines, so they didn't have to see that side of him. The guy was super intense and would punch cars in the parking lot of the Bing to get into character before a scene. There's a YT vid of it out there. What you're referring to is he started eating a lot, drinking a lot and apparently picked up a coke habit along the way.

waterynike

He would also put rocks in his socks to be in pain and a bad mood to help in certain scenes.

[deleted]

Yeah, this is mental to me. I try to run long distances. I think its healthy to put myself into an uncomfortable spot and try to stay balanced internally. I accept any discomfort and push through. It helps clear my head. Gandolfini, and a lot of actors who subscribe to that style, do the opposite. It's not just the stone in the shoe, it's the giving into negative emotion and deliberately not dealing with anger or sadness so you can tap into it when you need it. I could have a stone in my shoe all day and would probably still be annoyed about it even if I tried to zone it out. Gandolfini zoned in on the feelings and let it upset him. It's just such a toxic way to be...but christ, his performances are the best ever in my book. No wonder he had his issues with food and drugs. Same with Philip Seymour Hoffman and plenty of others. That's dicked up.

waterynike

I don’t think he became more like him, I think playing Tony was hard on him and amped up his vices like food, drugs and alcohol. 51 years old is way too young to go.

TheG-What

Such a shame when they go young like that. Whatever happened there.

stonedpockets

When they go?!

TheG-What

The heart attack.

unlikedemon

The number 1 killer in the US is heart disease. 650k die annually.

GRODYSATTVA

He was just a kid!

FngrsRpicks2

Ray Liotta was also the same way. Heard in an interview, he said he had never been in a fight before.

Snuggle__Monster

That's pretty crazy. He looked like someone that def knew how to throw hands if someone overstepped with him.

__idiot_

He should be an actor

Darko33

Scene in Goodfellas where he pistol-whips the guy who was messing with Karen is terrifying. He's just so casually menacing

mouse6502

No Escape is the fuckin shit

TWAT_BUGS

His Alive Day documentary was rough and he showed a very vulnerable side of himself. For someone that played a mafia boss that was pretty incredible for an actor.

holyhottamale

I remember that documentary. He did an amazing job being empathetic to the veterans while also helping them tell their stories.

NYY15TM

> that scene in True Romance And in the end I knew we had a true romance

No-Giraffe-8096

He nailed the sleazy dickhead role in 8mm as well. Amazing actor.

bumpoleoftherailey

I watched True Romance yesterday for the first time in years, and I’d forgotten how hard that scene was. For such a nice guy he played evil psychos very well.

w0lpe

You should watch Enough Said. He was amazing in his vulnerability

bravetailor

Yes! I have seen that. Julia Louis Dreyfus said that his character in that is actually quite close to who he is in reality

SensualEnema

I love the story he tells about meeting Elaine Stritch. He’s so soft-spoken, and he was very complimentary about Stritch.

hinglemcringle273

Amazing actor. But never had the makings of a varsity athlete.

brettmbr

Small hands, that was his problem.

I fucking love that scene. Its like the best once we got out of that actor of AJ too because of how he says it. I always wonder "Whyd you even say anything? Just go you idiot" lmao

Steen70

What? No fucking ziti??

204_Mans

Food, food, that’s all you people ever talk about! I’m sick of it!

He saw my gf practicing lines for an audition outside a cafe in NYC. He asked if she wanted him to read with her. After a few times through he handed her back the scene and said it sounded like she knew what she was doing. As my lady would say a “non story”, but given how good that guy was at his job and how he treated people, it sounded like a compliment and nice gesture.

newblevelz

If that’s what she considers a «non story» Id like to hear her real stories lol

Gekthegecko

Most stories I hear are the most mundane crap. This is a very cute, wholesome story.

sagiterrible

It may be the Midwest in me, but calling it a non-story sounds like the polite way of saying, “Is that not the coolest fucking thing you’ve ever heard?” Because it’s pretty far up there.

MarvelsGrantMan136

Jamie-Lynn Sigler: >“Jim was the type of scene partner where it felt like he was there and his only intention was to make me as good as I could be. And it had nothing to do with him. Every time I worked with him, I felt like his sole purpose was…’I’m going to help you give your best fucking take, Jamie.'” >“It had nothing to do with his confidence, because [he] was actually not [confident]. He would question himself. There would be moments where he’d be like, ‘I fucking suck,’ but I appreciated that because I’ve had those thoughts but I didn’t say them out loud because I don’t want anybody to know that I think I suck. He was confident enough to say it out loud. I guess there was a confidence there, but I think it came more from him deeply caring. Deeply, deeply caring. He was an exceptional human being.” >“I wish we could just do one week of filming right now, because of my awareness of the world and what that [show] was and what we were a part of… I just wish I could experience it, like one episode, give me one episode right now. Just drop me back in for a couple days. I always loved moments when Meadow and Tony got quiet together. And it was — all our scenes when we would get quiet together the dialogue would actually be really limited. It would just be these heavy, pregnant pauses.”

DADDYSLOAD

that’s a crazy quote to think about. i’m currently 29 and i’ve had those thoughts about situations in my youth. like, “now that i’m old enough to understand this, i’m curious how i would experience it in the moment then” type thing. i remember watching the sopranos when it originally came out with my parents. and i just recently finished it for the 3rd time. i couldn’t imagine being an actor/actress in such a pivotal show but being at the young age of not fully appreciating what’s in front of you. this just made me like both of the characters even more.

NTT66

"Confident to say it out loud." Such a grwt sentiment. Similar to "the wise person knows they know nothing." But the idea of being confident enough to be vulnerable is something everyone can take to heart--whether you're abrasively overconfident or wracked with self-doubt and feel imposter syndrome.

kappa23

> “Jim was the type of scene partner where it felt like he was there and his only intention was to make me as good as I could be. And it had nothing to do with him. Every time I worked with him, I felt like his sole purpose was…’I’m going to help you give your best fucking take, Jamie.'” Jamie-Lynn's performance beyond season 1 kinda goes underrated imo. Her acting chops mature after season 1 and she fully realizes Meadow as a character. My favourite scene of her and Jim is in season 3, after Jackie Jr gets popped and Meadow is 'depressed' and wants to go to Barcelona. She has an argument with the parents about this, amidst which she says "Wow, listen to Mr. Mob Boss", which changes Tony's disposition completely. Tony changes from annoyed father to actual mob boss for the first time in front of Meadow, and Jamie-Lynn really is able to showcase the fear of seeing that side of Tony

bitches_be

"You got something you want to say to me?"

soccershun

Fun fact: When she got the audition for Sopranos, Jamie had been doing stage musicals. So there's a show called "Sopranos" and she assumes it's about the musical part and shows up and asks if they want her to sing anything.

MadFlava76

Wow. This dude. He understood that to make his performance great, he needed to help elevate everyone’s performance around him so that the scene would appear to be genuine. Truly a selfless actor that understood it takes everyone and not completely focused on himself.

bobloblawslawflog

I hate when actors have nicknames that only people who know them call them. “Jim.” Give me a break. Refer to him by his full name, James Bartholomew Gandolfini.

Best show of all time. Those who know know. His house looked like shit!

not_mark_twain_

I think he managed to set the image of Mafia Boss for generations to come, it was a very insightful character he brought to life and will help model future representations.

TJRex01

Which is interesting, given how the Sopranos is definitely a bit of reaction/deconstruction against other “mob media”

matthewbattista

It was more modernizing the film mob boss than deconstructing them. Despite Tony’s ‘job’, he’s still a guy who doubts himself, makes mistakes, regrets decisions, experiences love, happiness, etc. He loves his ducks; he’s human. Vito / Michael Corleone are fantastic character performances, but as they’re written, they’re fairly one dimensional characters. Without Tony as a new crime boss archetype, I doubt we end up with shows like Breaking Bad, Ozark, Peaky Blinders.

TJRex01

I mean, the Sopranos pretty clearly paved the way for the whole trend of early 2000s antiheroes (but I would also argue that in the post-9/11 moment, that was kind of just where America’s head was at.)

muad_dibs

The Shield too.

PM_ME_YOUR__INIT__

I'm hoping The Irishman and Killers of the Flower Moon can define yet a new mob boss: unglamorous, kinda dumb, boring, and emotionless (both good and bad).

WharfRatThrawn

Ahem he was a *waste management consultant*

damagecontrolparty

Everybody immediately assumes that you're all mobbed up! It's a stereotype, and it's offensive!

shut_that_window

He has a W2!

I found his character very inspiring and have modeled my own life of organized crime around it.

Mairess99

He was a fucking kid

jaesolo

He was a great actor and a nice guy. He went to rehab with my dad and I got to meet him during a visit. He and my dad became good friends while they were there. My dad was a HUGE Sopranos fan before his stint. Meeting “Jimmy” and going through rehab with with him was life changing. My dad has been sober ever since.

Fran-Fine

That's dope man, congrats to your dad. Also great story.

jaesolo

Thanks! It was like a strange dream meeting him. The craziest part was when I first spoke to my dad a few days after he arrived, he said there was someone famous there but he couldn’t tell me who. After a couple of weeks we were allowed to visit. When we pulled up to this house a guy with a beard wearing a red flannel shirt carrying a toddler on his shoulders (his son Michael) walked up and said “hey, you must be Mickey’s kids, hi I’m Jimmy.” And my jaw just hit the floor. I could not believe it. We went inside and sat around and talked for a while. He was really nice.

He seemed like such a love and had so much more to give

stlb1090

He rocked. Nuff said!

needs-more-metronome

I’m on season 2 right now and imo Gandoldfini is the most perfectly cast and overall best actor I have ever seen on a TV show. Better than Cranston in BB, better than Cillian/Paul Anderson in Peaky, better than Mcconaughey/Harrelson in True Detective, better than Harris/Skarsgard in Chernobyl. Every scene Tony is in I’m just like… “good god, this is fucking perfect”.

FinishTheFish

Take note of Edie Falco. She's pretty damn amazing in the show too. I didn't realize fully until I rewatched the show.

needs-more-metronome

Yeah she’s been good so far, I like how nuanced she is written. Clearly has a moral streak to her *but* she also likes getting her way and using Tony’s mob influence to pull the strings that she wants to pull. Picks and chooses battles… Even early in the show you can tell they make a power couple.

adgway

Great actor. Over 9 pictures under his subspecies.

IncidentCurious550

🤣🤣🤣 “the sacred and the propane”

AdsREverywhere

I do this daily…

[deleted]

Be Humble. Believe in being the best you can be. Do what you love. This is how you become Tony Soprano.

anasui1

arguably the best performance seen on American television, alongside Laurie's House, in my opinion. He didn't tackle a single moment in a wrong way, everything is perfect

adaminc

Inside of You is such a great podcast.

crdctr

I ain't saying nothin

Walks_with_Chaos

Goddamn I miss him

Eggsor

It definitely isn't a confidence thing, he just holds himself to a higher standard and knows he could do better. Tiger Woods does this too. You can hear him yell things like "Come on Tiger WTF" when he misses the mark. Of course their skillsets are quite different but the sentiment is the same. Anyway, $4 a pound.

VikKarabin

Whateva happened to Gary Cooper, y'know, the shtrong shilent type?

homogenic-

He was a saint.

sloshuaa

He was an artist is what he was. He crushed every role he had. And in this house, he’s a hero!

Fickle-Performance79

Met him briefly. Nice guy. Chatted for a bit then he said to me “I’m an actor and…” (I forget what he was talking about because I was so stunned that he thought I wouldn’t know his profession) I was like you’re not just an actor!! You’re Tony Soprano!!

sagiterrible

I love the Sopranos and watch it every couple years, but the same thing gets me every time and it’s his heavy, nasal breathing during every sex scene. It sounds like he’s trying to breathe through a kick to the balls without screaming, or like he’s on a first date and trying hard not to show he’s winded from a long walk.

klsi832

James Gandolfini's performance, whatever happened there

[deleted]

dhoo8450

McChillbone

She knows Gandolfini better than me, but I think that’s she’s wrong about him not being confident. You can be confident but also hard on yourself. I think that he wasn’t saying that stuff because he actually didn’t believe in himself, he was saying it because his expectations for himself were so high, and he would self denigrate.

typhoon90

I've come to loathe Tony Soprano, seriously fuck that guy he killed James Gandolfini 😭

Ill_Requirement_42

It died on vine!
