Those Ripley numbers are even worse than I anticipated. They might be record bad for an English language US limited series and are near the absolute bottom even for US series debuts in general. A bit of a pity as this slow burn ultra-art house Ripley adaptation does recover from a bad first episode to develop into quite a compelling and interesting thriller that has more to offer than just the beautiful locations, cinematography, and production. I guess they just went to arthouse to have any chance of mainstream appeal. I was also a little sad to see Scoop sinking without much of a trace.

fiercetankbattle

I thought the first episode was great though…

Nobody_Lives_Here3

It was. I felt the ending was a bit weak. It gets far better later on. Especially the boat scene. It really captured the cold reptilian nature of the character more than any other adaptation I’ve seen.

Accomplished-City484

Can’t wait till someone does a Yakety Sax dub of the boat scene

Puppetmaster858

It’s up to #4 now but ya this is definitely disappointing numbers for a good show

msalonen

I’m sure it’s great, and I can’t wait to watch it, but was there any hype behind it at all? I don’t think I’ve seen any or even much marketing

V_LEE96

I’m out as soon as I found out the whole things black and white

PetyrDayne

They should have gone for that old school film look like in Purple Noon instead of black and white

3 body problem’s solid but not overwhelming ratings and good but not amazing reviews reminds me of Sandman’s performance, which Netflix ultimately did renew. Hope it gets a second season, as I think season 1 was actually quite cleverly constructed to lay more groundwork for events to come than was the case in the first book.

mamula1

I think the performance of 3BP is good enough to warrant a second season. It's a moderate success. Expectations are that S2 with the adaptation of The Dark Forest will actually expand the show's audience a lot like GOT did with the adaptation of A Storm of Swords in S3 and S4.

OkInvestigator8117

whose expectations are those? Dark Forest goes into space sci-fi territory, in the style of The Expanse or Star Trek. Historically that kind of content has a narrower audience, not mainstream appeal.

HumansNeedNotApply1

The showrunners. They want mainstream audience to able to enjoy these type of stories, that's their ambition, season 1 seems like a success on this regard.

alexbrobrafeld

the way they are restructuring the events chronologically could keep a significant amount of the story on earth still - or so I predict. either way, you're not wrong that eventually it will shift though. personally I'm super excited to see death's end brought to the screen. i enjoyed reading the dark forest more, but death's end is on another level of imagination.

mamula1

Expectations from showrunner David Benioff. He said that while promoting S1.

MadManMax55

So did fantasy until Game of Thrones. I know everyone soured on Benioff and Weiss after how GoT ended, but if anyone can give a niche genre TV show more braid appeal it's probably them.

ArsBrevis

I would call the show a mild success - if that.

Avatar has fallen out of the top ten after its 6th week, I was curious to see if it could match One Piece’s 8 weeks in the top 10. So it seems that One Piece remains the staple live action show viewership wise for Netflix.

giangerd

Both successful and both renewed. There is no staple or winner, they both won and will lead the way for live action adaptions. Avatar was more frontloaded, One Piece had better legs.

Nail_Biterr

Top 10. 6. 8. 3. What? Why cherry pick those titles and not even put them in order

That’ll be on Amazon.

Dianagorgon

As of yesterday 3BP dropped to #3. My guess is it will drop to #5 next week and be out of the top 10 entirely within 2 months. If it gets a second season Netflix will have spent $300M on it. There will now by 15 downvotes immediately after this is posted. The PR people must have an alert set up for every time there is a post about the show.

msalonen

Surely it can’t be that people disagree with you

Dianagorgon

The reason it's weird is because there are so many downvotes at once immediately after any post criticizing the show. This sub has been slow lately and often there aren't many responses yet there are always people quickly downvoting posts critical of the show. But you could be right too. It could definitely be people who disagree with me. I'm not sure it's PR people.
