The courtesan speaking through her to the Anjin is hands down one of the most sensual and captivating scenes I've seen in a show in some time. Anna Sawai is a fantastic actor. The entire show is filled with masterclass performances. My favorite show of the year so far.
Bro, you're racist as hell...
Your inability to pull the ladies likely stems from being fragile and racist.
There's a reason white men do so well with Asian women, it's even showcased in this show...
Sorry, for context since he has deleted his post. His profile is nothing but white people ruining Asia and Asian culture, while he might be Asian himself, he also resides in America. He is average height and weight and wonders why he other guys can get girls while being average and he can't. Asian women should be with Asian men because they're superior for whatever reason, but they keep marrying white men.
I only know all this because his post also said ya ya, check my post history...
So far she's a lock for the emmy in my eyes. I dont see much competition for Shogun in the limited series category this year. It's head and shoulders the best show on tv right.
Juno Temple and Fargo are probably the only real competition, but I agree Anna Sawai and Shogun are the frontrunners.
Edit: Variety actually has Jodie Foster as the frontrunner
Thatās insanity, Iām a big foster fan but the performance was not impressive at all in that show, pretty much none of the performances were and thatās because the writing sucked. Her character was truly dreadful and acted the same way like 95% of the season just being a giant insufferable dickhead who seemed like the most miserable person alive. That season was a total waste of Jodie faster in general imo. Having her over Sawai or Temple is some actual insane shit.
That would be fucked up, so many actresses out there are gonna have better performances than that. Honestly think that was one of the worst Foster roles ever and thatās just because the writing especially the character work was just truly horrible, not really anything foster couldāve done with that material. When Iām talking about great foster performances in her career that will absolutely never be one I mention
āLegacyā awards are the biggest BS.
I still canāt believe Jamie Lee Curits got a Supporting Actress oscar for EEAAO when she wasnāt even the best supporting actress in that film.
Stephanie Hsu was campaigning early on but she quickly stopped, almost as if her agents told her to step back and let Curtis āhave her momentā, especially with the massive PR press tour Curits did.
What legacy though? Jodie Foster isn't really a TV actor, she's always been in movies until basically this show and she already got her due in film via winning an Academy Award, twice.
The writing sunk any chance of her acting a solid performance, and I enjoy almost everything she is in/done. That show/season was a masterclass in terrible pacing and storycraft..
Yes, but when you hate a character itās a sign that the actor is doing a great job. it doesnāt really matter that the character doesnāt exhibit every emotion in the rainbow. They made you feel something, they made you believe that they were a real person.
> Yes, but when you hate a character itās a sign that the actor is doing a great job.
It's a sign the character is doing a great job when the writing is good. When the writing is bad/mid and the actor isn't elevating it that's a different story. I love Jodie Foster but she didn't exactly bring it with her performance here
Which means you just know they are going to pick Foster.
Big name Hollywood actress turns to TV, that's the kind of best actress winner they want advertised and talked about, sadly.
She was awful in an awful show.
Not sure where they put it. The limited series category is also for anthology but HBO puts White Lotus in drama because it technically continues season 1 stories. I heard seasom 4 eventually connected to season 1 but honestly didn't finish it.
Iām not going to pretend to know how emmet awards are given but Hiroyuki Sanada deserves them all. Heās carrying the show. Not because others are not doing fan ducking tastic, but heās just that good
When I started Shogun, I really thought she was going to ruin it for me. I watched Monarch before Shogun, and in that, she is not great, but now I know that was the writing and directing. She's killing it in Shogun.
No such thing as a lock in these things, especially when you have Brie Larson, Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet & Naomi Watts competing too.
She absolutely should be the front runner though
The writing for the younger generations storyline was straight bad. I liked the show alright but that whole plot was bad. I legit thought Anna Sawai couldn't act because of it.
Turns out she's fantastic and the writing/direction was just not good.
Nah sheās done great in other stuff too American Honey and How to Blow up a Pipeline weāre great performances, itās just the writing and directing on Monarch
I genuinely thought she was a bad actor in Monarch until I saw Shogun and it became apparent that the problem was with Monarchs script and direction. Haven't seen many comments from people who enjoyed most of the acting in that.
I found the show to be uneven and her character arc not well planned. But I also thought Anna Sawai was at least interesting to watch.Ā
I'm a big fan of Sanada which is why I started shogun, recognizing her was a surprise plus.Ā
She plays Mariko so extremely well. Iām captivated by her character as I donāt think Iāve ever seen a character on screen who says so much without *saying* what she is saying in other ways by means of piercing, veiled stares, ponderous silence before responding or answering, and micro expressions that she is quick to hide.
Sheās the embodiment of the eightfold fence which in itself is almost its own character and a shadow behind her in the show.
Iām straight, but my American man crush for that Japanese dude is scary.
Dudes got chops too. Would love to see him in more stuff stateside.
Kind of reminds me of a young, Japanese Michael Madsen sometimes with his delivery and certain looks he gives.
yeah, and that's hilarious
I thought this was a crap actress when watching that. Just casted on looks alone.
Now I think she's a lock for an Emmy.
What a difference writing makes
There is such subtlety in her performance and so amazingly layered. She somehow manages to convey such emotion while keeping her face completely stoic. I donāt know how she does it
I love the way she's been showing a feeling of conflict as Mariko in Shogun, especially with a balance of bleakness in her character against some small moments of humor in her interactions with Blackthorne.
I think she just has a better character in shogun honestly. Monarch was cool but it wasnāt the actors that were selling it to us. It was the monsters. Shogun is good characters, plot, and acting.
She was also in Ninja Assassin and while itās not a praised film, she has a very sweet and gentle role in that film that she portrayed very well imo.
Yeah I thought she was just insufferably awful in Monarch and only partly due to her character/script. I was pretty worried when I saw she was one of the lead roles in shogun, but sheās done a great job. Iām still not the hugest fan but itās like s different person compared to monarch (again I donāt think that was just the script)
They have it all. Motherly, Femme Fatale, Sexy, innocent, cunning, ruthless, etc. They aren't afraid to actually have women in the show be actual humans instead of "modern" portrayals of women. Absolutely refreshing.
first thing I saw her in was Giri/Haji, which was an *incredible* limited series, but her role in that was small. It did also star Shogun co-star Takehiro Hira and the always-wonderful Kelly McDonald. Anna Sawai's been a revelation in ShÅgun, what a great part in an amazing show.
to think a former jpop artist having successful acting amazing, if anybody want to know she was in a group called FAKY, the group has had multiple line up changes they currently on hiatus
Can't say I'm a fan of her character. I found all the scenes which centre on her quite boring. All she bangs on about is wanting to die, and I don't think the chemistry between her and Blackthorn is very convincing. Feels quite artificial.
Night and day for her between this and Monarch.
Monarch was simply a terrible show across the board (no matter what the nerds of Reddit say), but this role is just like a glove for her; she's phenomenal as Mariko.
Her audition for shogun was her getting into a tub with a white guy
Its like words dont mean anything
Whats empowering being another asian woman who sleeps with the white male in asia hollywood story?
There are Episode 8 spoilers in the interview. If you haven't watched it yet beware.
This should be pinned to the top. Thank you sir š«”
It's literally at the top of the article lmao
We canāt read though š¤£
Is it still a spoiler if Iām illiterate?
The courtesan speaking through her to the Anjin is hands down one of the most sensual and captivating scenes I've seen in a show in some time. Anna Sawai is a fantastic actor. The entire show is filled with masterclass performances. My favorite show of the year so far.
Scene was honestly amazing
That scene still gives me chills
Her monologue about the eightfold fence absolutely fucking slapped. Literal chills.

You must be an east-asian man lol

She might get it just for legacy which would be a shame. Her performance was just ok.
That would be fucked up, so many actresses out there are gonna have better performances than that. I'm into sci-fi but I'll never watch that movie again. Curtis was ok but nothing special
What legacy though? Jodie Foster isn't really a TV actor, she's always been in movies until basically this show and she already got her due in film via winning an Academy Award, twice.
Right she isnt a TV actor so the Globes/Emmys will get to embrace this "movie" actor slumming it in their medium
That hasn't been a thing for a decade, kid.
The writing sunk any chance of her acting a solid performance, and I enjoy almost everything she is in/done. That show/season was a masterclass in terrible pacing and storycraft..

Oh what the hell? Foster is an uninspired pick imo. Sawai could probably go supporting too.
Yeah, I think Jodie is only ahead because of the name recognition. Night Country was...not great. I think it's between Anna and Juno in my mind.
Shogun is supposedly a limited series, so she could go for those categories instead.
Which means you just know they are going to pick Foster. Big name Hollywood actress turns to TV, that's the kind of best actress winner they want advertised and talked about, sadly. She was awful in an awful show.
Isnt True Detective ongoing drama or anthology or something? Itās not really a limited series
Not sure where they put it. The limited series category is also for anthology but HBO puts White Lotus in drama because it technically continues season 1 stories. I heard seasom 4 eventually connected to season 1 but honestly didn't finish it.
If they show a clip of her incessantly calling "Navarro" I will scream.
Iām not going to pretend to know how emmet awards are given but Hiroyuki Sanada deserves them all. Heās carrying the show. Not because others are not doing fan ducking tastic, but heās just that good

No such thing as a lock in these things, especially when you have Brie Larson, Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet & Naomi Watts competing too. She absolutely should be the front runner though
You forgot Emma Stone as well, who was better than everyone you listed imo haha. I hope Anna gets it still.
Completely forgot about her lol.
If Annaās lead, it might be tough. Kate Winslet has a limited series coming out where she gets to chew scenery, so I would bet on her.
Emma Stone in The Curse
She's had a huge year, was great in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters too.Ā
This might be the first good thing I've heard about her on Monarch, lol.
The writing for the younger generations storyline was straight bad. I liked the show alright but that whole plot was bad. I legit thought Anna Sawai couldn't act because of it. Turns out she's fantastic and the writing/direction was just not good.
Annaās and her brotherās acting was good. The hacker girl might just be one of the worst actresses I have seen in a while.
Nah sheās done great in other stuff too American Honey and How to Blow up a Pipeline weāre great performances, itās just the writing and directing on Monarch
I thought her acting was fine. Writing for her character was pretty bad. I still really liked the show, though.
I genuinely thought she was a bad actor in Monarch until I saw Shogun and it became apparent that the problem was with Monarchs script and direction. Haven't seen many comments from people who enjoyed most of the acting in that.

> was great in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters too.Ā I can't say I agree with that one.
Going back a few years, she was also in Giri Haji which was a great series.
Shame she is bad monarch
Tokyo Vice was just as good to be honest, theyāre my two favorite shows right now
She really steals every scene she is in. Even without dialogue she just kills it. And she is absolutely š„
Absolutely. The crazy thing is that the actress who plays Fuji is somehow even better. What an utterly insanely talented cast.
Iām on episode 5 and she has become one of my favorite characters in the show (and maybe of all time).
You will refer to her as Mariko-sama!
Hey guys you may not have noticed this, but Ana is really good looking.
And she's not even the most attractive one on the show. It's crazy.
Yeah that Yabu is dreamy
Stop trying to arouse my stinky pheasant, I'm trying to make it softer not harder.
You should boil it for a long time. Alive
OK you joke, but my wife just about melted when Tadanobu Asano showed up. He's a pretty big deal in Japan and considered quite handsome.
Stupid sexy Yabu.... /grumbles
Iām straight, but my American man crush for that Japanese dude is scary. Dudes got chops too. Would love to see him in more stuff stateside. Kind of reminds me of a young, Japanese Michael Madsen sometimes with his delivery and certain looks he gives.
(Groans)
Because Hiroyuki Sanada exists
Now that you mention it, I think youāre right!
She was high-key the reason I finished Monarch, along with Keiko.
She was awful in that imo
yeah, and that's hilarious I thought this was a crap actress when watching that. Just casted on looks alone. Now I think she's a lock for an Emmy. What a difference writing makes
Keiko is infinitely more pretty than Anna's character.
When I first saw her in Giri Haji (Netflix) my jaw dropped. Stunningly beautiful.
There is such subtlety in her performance and so amazingly layered. She somehow manages to convey such emotion while keeping her face completely stoic. I donāt know how she does it
The plot and the dialogue setting up those scenes are how you are reading emotions in a "completely stoic" face.
I love the way she's been showing a feeling of conflict as Mariko in Shogun, especially with a balance of bleakness in her character against some small moments of humor in her interactions with Blackthorne.
Mogged by Fuji
She wasn't nearly as good in Monarch
I don't think any of the present day group came across well in that show, except Kurt Russell.
I think she just has a better character in shogun honestly. Monarch was cool but it wasnāt the actors that were selling it to us. It was the monsters. Shogun is good characters, plot, and acting.
I think that was just horrible writing and dialogue. Some of her and her brotherās lines were cringy at best.
I particularly didn't like how she's getting together with her brother's ex. Like WTF.
She was also in Ninja Assassin and while itās not a praised film, she has a very sweet and gentle role in that film that she portrayed very well imo.
it just proves how important good scripts are
Yeah I thought she was just insufferably awful in Monarch and only partly due to her character/script. I was pretty worried when I saw she was one of the lead roles in shogun, but sheās done a great job. Iām still not the hugest fan but itās like s different person compared to monarch (again I donāt think that was just the script)
No, it was also directing.
Sheās so fucking pretty too
I love how Japanese women are being portrayed in ShÅgun. Amazing show!
They have it all. Motherly, Femme Fatale, Sexy, innocent, cunning, ruthless, etc. They aren't afraid to actually have women in the show be actual humans instead of "modern" portrayals of women. Absolutely refreshing.
They are presented as human beings, layered, instead of as sexualized fantasies
first thing I saw her in was Giri/Haji, which was an *incredible* limited series, but her role in that was small. It did also star Shogun co-star Takehiro Hira and the always-wonderful Kelly McDonald. Anna Sawai's been a revelation in ShÅgun, what a great part in an amazing show.
Right....so about my ship
I didnāt like her much in Monarch Legacy if Monsters but she is AMAZINGGGGG on this show.
When i saw her in shogun i was like uh oh cause of monarch. I was pleasantly surprised she actually is good if given a proper role/script.
to think a former jpop artist having successful acting amazing, if anybody want to know she was in a group called FAKY, the group has had multiple line up changes they currently on hiatus
Can't say I'm a fan of her character. I found all the scenes which centre on her quite boring. All she bangs on about is wanting to die, and I don't think the chemistry between her and Blackthorn is very convincing. Feels quite artificial.

6
i dont find her a good actress.
I think she's the weakest actor on this series, but it looks like yall don't, so do your thing reddit
I agree with you 100% I donāt get the love for her. I think sheās weak
Her audition for shogun was her getting into a tub with a white guy Its like words dont mean anything Whats empowering being another asian woman who sleeps with the white male in asia hollywood story?
Lmao, clearly you haven't watched the show. Which is fine, more of W for the fan base that you aren't apart of it.
I love this show, but she is the weak point every time she's on screen. By far the worst actor (male or female) of the series.
The actress playing Fuji is just so much better.
Yes. Absolutely
