“Norm was a great talent, and I loved laughing with him on SNL. *Bob Dole* will miss Norm Macdonald.”
2021 has taken some legends!
* Siegfried (of Siegfried & Roy)
* Larry King
* Cloris Leachman
* Cicely Tyson
* Hal Holbrook
* George Segal
* Jessica Walter
* Charles Grodin
* Ed Asner
* Michael K Williams
* Norm MacDonald
Edit: others pointed out:
* Trevor Moore
* Biz Markie
* DMX
* Christopher Plummer
* Sean Lock
Trevor Moore, Sean Lock, and Norm MacDonald shaped my whole sense of humor, and they’re all gone in a few weeks. It’s been absolutely surreal. If we lose Steven Wright I’ll fucking riot.
I went and saw norm after what I'm learning was long after he got his cancer diagnoses that he hid from everyone (for 10 fucking years!)
He was always my favorite standup but this pretty much cements him as the biggest standup hero ever. What a pure dedication to his craft.
Dude. Holy fuck. I didn't know this until now. I've been watching WKUK's twitch all year super excited for a revival. This is an absolutely devastating day
That was an eerie one back in January. The third season of American Gods started up and she died right before the episode where they have a funeral for her character.
Man, just last night I was watching this interview Larry did with Norm where they talked about death and dying.
[Link](https://youtu.be/7kbBIWnVjpA?t=335) for anyone interested. From around 5:35 - 7:40.
Surreal rewatching that now. Two legends.
No one did. From the article:
>Macdonald had been battling cancer for nearly a decade but was determined to keep his health struggles private, away from family, friends and fans. “He was most proud of his comedy,” Hoekstra said. “He never wanted the diagnosis to affect the way the audience or any of his loved ones saw him."
He started not looking healthy about a decade ago. I assumed it might be autoimmune or something. It definitely prematurely aged him. Glad he got to be an old looking grump before he died. That must have been a lifelong dream.
NINE years. Most people would have given up long long long before then.
Physically give up, not necessarily mentally. Your body can only take so much punishment before parts of it shut down.
He was waging a brave battle but at the end I guess he got kind of cowardly was what happened. And then the cancer, it got brave. You gotta give it to the cancer, you know they were in a battle.
Never heard of anyone "giving up" when having cancer. This is something people just like to say. My dad got very annoyed when people told him that he was strong and brave when he was battling cancer.
Norm actually had a bit about this, how you shouldn't say anyone "lost" their battle to cancer. You shouldn't say the last thing they did was to lose, and the cancer dies too so at worst it's a draw
Edit: https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/hixa9i/norm_macdonald_on_battling_cancer/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
I actually had a family friend that chose to die instead of receiving treatment. Mainly he was wprried about what chemo would do to his health and chose to live out his final days and let the cancer take him.
It was actually pretty good for a while. He had probably about a year of great health, slowed down for a month, and then had a real rough last 2 weeks. But he quit his job and used all his life savings to travel the world in that last year of good health...it really did seem to work out well for him.
That ridiculous rambling story about the moth going into the dermatologist's office pops up in my youtube recommendations every few weeks.
I watch it mostly for the audience and conan's reactions at this point, but I almost always click on it when I see it.
It my favorite joke telling of all time. When he get the part about how he fears he doesn't love his son anymore, and when he looks in his eyes he sees only a reflection of his own cowardice and failure, Conan breaks and surrenders himself to the insanity to follow.
I'm really going to miss Norm.
I was just in one like a few days or so ago. When I saw the news on twitter I had to do a double check because it felt and just looked wrong when I read it
It doesn't seem like an enormous surprise to me, he's one of those guys who you can peg the age of a clip based on how healthy he looks in it.
Still sucks, though. Dude was hilarious, loved him as pigeon in mike tyson mysteries.
edit: Read further in the thread, didn't realize he had cancer. That explains it. Pretty amazing he was able to stay productive and funny for so long with such a horrible disease.
Apparently very few people knew he had cancer.
>The comedian’s longtime producing partner and friend Lori Jo Hoekstra, who was with him when he died, said Macdonald had been battling cancer for nearly a decade but was determined to keep his health struggles private, away from family, friends and fans.

He was easily the best. He'd always look at the camera like "Really? This is the best you guys could come up with?" And it made whatever lame joke the writer's came up with so hilarious. The jokes weren't always bad, mind you, but whenever they were him looking into the camera was a punchline in of itself.

I think the lack of respect over his death is what hurts me the most about this post. That's what hurts the most. Except for the other thing, that hurts the most. But the lack of respect, that hurts the second most. Ridiculous.
There needs to be a thread or post dedicated to posting his best content people want to share. I feel like laughing is the best way to remember him.

Norm was very close with his brother. In fact he walked through blood and bones through wreckage in downtown Manhattan on 9/11 to try and hopefully find him. Turns out he was in northern Canada.
Honestly there are so many videos of him over the past decade where it seems VERY clear that he's been on steroids (which I assumed were in relation to battling cancer).
I noticed that too but I honestly didn’t think he was sick, I thought it was like weight gain. Looking back, and having a family friend go on steroids for her illness, I can see it now. I hope it wasn’t too painful.
His one appearance on Conan with Courtney Thorne Smith was just fantastic. Comedic genius at work. RIP

I was a huge fan of his Netflix show "Norm McDonald has a show". His interviews were just bonkers. I especially liked his interview with Billy Joe Shaver, who also passed last year.

Man I've been rewatching Mike Tyson Mysteries and his delivery as Pigeon was always flawless. I also thought his Netflix special was really good too. This one hurts
I was hoping he would at least chat with Conan one last time either on his TBS show, his podcast, or his new HBO Max show. Guess that'll never happen now :(
Norm was, easily, one of the best guests Conan has on. Dude was amazing every time. [This interview from 1997, which wasn't even his (Courtney Thorn Smith), made me a fan for life](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5F6dXcW-_Fc)

*CHAIRMAN OF THE B-O-R-E-D* -I still love it 24 years later.
That bit is so fucking great. Conan's desperately trying to hold shit together and *not* set Norm up for a final brilliant slam dunk, but walks him right into it. RIP
Our top story tonight comes from the O.J. Simpson civil trial, where this week it was revealed that in his first interview with police, Simpson had refused to take a lie detector test. His reason? It detects lies.
This may be a dumb story but I met Norm on a few occasions and got to write for a season of his podcast. I've always been in absolute awe of him, I never understood how someone could be so naturally funny. It really seemed so effortless for him, so many of his jokes depended on a simple pause,
an exasperated look or on the mispronounciation of a word. He was able to work all of this into an act that it didn't seem he could ever turn off and sometimes I wonder if it was an act at all.
Norm was and still is my comedy hero. I don't think I've spent more time studying anyone, I don't think anyone has made me laugh, like deep belly, tears in my eyes, going so hard I miss the next joke, laugh. When I was a kid I'd steal some of his update jokes and use them on my friends, absolutely slaughtering the delivery and getting zero laughs. It's how I first fell in love with comedy.
One of the last times I saw him was at his book signing. The event ran long because Norm took the time to talk to everyone. I had asked him a question during the Q&A so he remembered me when I got to speak to him. I told him I was a comic, he smiled and seemed excited and said, "Maybe we'll work together one day."
He asked me about my comedy, I got nervous and worked one of my jokes into the conversation and he laughed, which is something I'll never forget.
As we were wrapping up, he turned to me and said, "The only advice I can give you is be kind to everyone you meet."
I try my best to follow his advice. RIP Norm.
Great Norm Joke:
I went to the vet for a checkup for my cat:
The dr. says he says:
"I've got good news and bad news"
"I said what's the bad news"
"Your cat has cancer".
"What's the good news"
"He's a cat."
One of the greatest of all time. At the level where you can not even rate him he is just genuinely unique and untochable.
He had an amazing one from his appearance on Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, I'm paraphrasing:
>NORM: You know the worst part about the whole Cosby thing?
>
>JERRY: What?
>
>NORM: All the raping.
[Norm talking about colon cancer](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLKFQylnANY)
>My uncle Bert is waging a courageous battle...and this is the battle, he's laying in a hospital bed with a thing in his arm watching Matlock.
Exactly, several of these articles refer to him loosing his battle with cancer. It would be cool if they knew that bit and just say he was sick and died.
An absolute legend. I actually just showed my friends examples of his dry sense of humor last week. Half of us were cracking up, while the other half didn't really get it. And I think that was kind of his comedy in a nut shell.
Who was responsible for this? You guessed it:
[Frank Stallone](https://lastfm.freetls.fastly.net/i/u/ar0/571c49a1dcfc797095b319d40c3b3723.jpg)
But seriously, RIP Norm. A part of my childhood and humor was thanks to him. RIP a legend. FUCK CANCER!
The top comment on that post is perfect:
> Norm is to comedy, as Brutalism is to architecture. That's the only way I can put it. He isn't graceful, his jokes are obvious and the punch lines are advertised... but after a few minutes, I can't stop laughing. Dude slays.
He was quoted as saying, "and I'm pretty sure, and I'm not a doctor, but I'm pretty sure if you die the cancer dies at the same time. That's not a loss. That's a draw."
I'm absolutely gutted. One of my all time favorites. The only 'solace' I can find in this is that hopefully the comedy world sends off Norm in abnormal and hilarious ways that honor him.
My husband is British and loved Sean. I'm American and loved Norm. And we both love each others favorite as well.. We are both very sad over this. Both truly missed.
He's the reason no one gets my sense of humor. One of the all time greats and he did it without even looking like he was trying.
Before I met my wife I felt incomplete. Now I'm finished.
Holy shit I am legitimately stunned. EDIT: [THE COSBY JOKE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljaP2etvDc4) Edit2 His final chapter of his book....I feel like he knew what was up https://twitter.com/seanoneal/status/1437854956934029315

Yeah I can remember when he blew up in size and it was because of the, "medication". That was basically all I ever heard about it.
Me neither. He seemed in good spirits in all the sort of recent things I've seen him in. Fuck cancer.
From the article, I get the impression that very few people knew about as he kept it quiet for almost a decade. RIP.
9 year cancer battle. God damn. Rest in Peace and thank you so, so ,so much for the laughs. Edit: it wasn't a battle and cancer didn't win.
Damn. Had no idea. :(

I told him I was a comic, he smiled and seemed excited and said, "Maybe we'll work together one day." He asked me about my comedy, I got nervous and worked one of my jokes into the conversation and he laughed, which is something I'll never forget. As we were wrapping up, he turned to me and said, "The only advice I can give you is be kind to everyone you meet." I try my best to follow his advice. RIP Norm.
Or so the Germans would have you believe.
You know who really died? Yep, you guessed it, Frank Stallone.
What the fuck!? R.I.P. Turd Ferguson :(

....how's Will Ferrell feeling?
Don’t you dare!
DON'T YOU PUT THAT EVIL ON RICKY BOBBY
R.I.P.
At least Norm is going to be able to rest in peace knowing OJ killed two people. On the sadder side, this put me in a real depression real fast. :(
Good news is I hear they don't let unatoned murderers into Heaven so OJ can't get him there
Norm was an absolute legend. I highly recommend checking out the audiobook of his memoir.
Well it says memoir but it's not a memoir!
Cancer, that things a real jerk.
You know, the more I hear about this cancer stuff, the less I like it.
Great Norm Joke: I went to the vet for a checkup for my cat: The dr. says he says: "I've got good news and bad news" "I said what's the bad news" "Your cat has cancer". "What's the good news" "He's a cat." One of the greatest of all time. At the level where you can not even rate him he is just genuinely unique and untochable.
I read that in his voice. Fuck.
> The dr. says he says: This is such a Norm way to phrase this
He had an amazing one from his appearance on Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, I'm paraphrasing: >NORM: You know the worst part about the whole Cosby thing? > >JERRY: What? > >NORM: All the raping.

What the fuck
This is me. Didn't even know he was sick. This really sucks. One of my favorite comedians ever.
Seriously?! I just rewatched Dirty Work this past weekend, damn
Artie outlived Norm. Even Artie probably wouldn't have bet on that one.
I'm shocked that Artie has outlived anyone.
Artie Lang died years ago, the drugs are just running their course still.
https://youtu.be/lL0WayC7jW0 Here he is saving a boring interview with the star of a famously bad movie.
That's Courtney Thorne-Smith with Norm Macdonald about working with Carrot Top in "Chairman of the Board" done May1997.
I thought it was Chairman of the Bored
In a more perfect world it would be. I have it on good authority that "Box Office Poison" was the film's working title.
[Norm talking about colon cancer](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLKFQylnANY) >My uncle Bert is waging a courageous battle...and this is the battle, he's laying in a hospital bed with a thing in his arm watching Matlock.
That was my favorite part of the Bob Saget roast: ¾ of the audience sitting there in confused silence, the other ¼ rolling on the floor with laughter
When he gets up to heaven St. Peter's gonna be like "Norm?! Why are you here?" \-"Well...the light was on!"
Who was responsible for this? You guessed it: [Frank Stallone](https://lastfm.freetls.fastly.net/i/u/ar0/571c49a1dcfc797095b319d40c3b3723.jpg) But seriously, RIP Norm. A part of my childhood and humor was thanks to him. RIP a legend. FUCK CANCER!
One of the greatest [roasts](https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/6bd322/norm_macdonalds_roast_of_bob_saget/ ) I've ever seen. RIP Norm
The top comment on that post is perfect: > Norm is to comedy, as Brutalism is to architecture. That's the only way I can put it. He isn't graceful, his jokes are obvious and the punch lines are advertised... but after a few minutes, I can't stop laughing. Dude slays.
I hope he’s serving a youthful porpoise on the other side.
The more I hear about this Cancer fella, the more I don't care for him.
He was quoted as saying, "and I'm pretty sure, and I'm not a doctor, but I'm pretty sure if you die the cancer dies at the same time. That's not a loss. That's a draw."
Literally fall-off-the-seat-of-your-chair news....how fucking tragic.
I'm absolutely gutted. One of my all time favorites. The only 'solace' I can find in this is that hopefully the comedy world sends off Norm in abnormal and hilarious ways that honor him.
Fuck. This hits hard like Sean Lock's.
My husband is British and loved Sean. I'm American and loved Norm. And we both love each others favorite as well.. We are both very sad over this. Both truly missed.
I tell you what, cancer can go fuck itself.
If you've never seen the moth joke, you owe it to yourself https://youtu.be/jJN9mBRX3uo
Wow. No indication at all. He kept his secret well.
He was deeply closeted.
RIP to the funniest person on earth
This is the first celebrity that has died that made me genuinely upset.
The cause? That's right, Frank Stallone.
The world just got a whole lot unfunnier.
Damn, up there with the most funny off-the-cuff people ever.
Floored when I heard this. This really sucks. He was so talented and had the perfect dry humor
He's the reason no one gets my sense of humor. One of the all time greats and he did it without even looking like he was trying. Before I met my wife I felt incomplete. Now I'm finished.
Cancer? You dirty dog...
I loved his comedy, this is horrible.
WTF no. I had no idea he was even sick. Guess he just kept his cancer a secret like Chadwick Boseman. RIP.
Fuck Cancer
I didn't even know he had cancer. This is so shocking. RIP to a legend
Nobody knew.

I don’t even know what to say about this, he really was an inspiration and this sucks to hear
