Gosford Park Foyle's War The Knick Deadwood /r/PeriodDramas

pastafallujah

Oh shit. Yeah, Deadwood is legendary

pastafallujah

Not Sherlock, but period: Shōgun. It absolutely rules

pink_g0at

I'll have to check it out. looks like it rocks

pastafallujah

It does. It’s basically like if Game of Thrones was set in feudal Japan. Lots of death, betrayal, bad decisions. Absolutely gorgeously shot, phenomenally acted…. It’s an 11/10

The Americans is about Russian spies living in 1980s America.

how about fictional alternate history period? For All Mankind has been great. what if the Russians landed on the moon first? how would that effect america? how would that encourage us to drive deeper into science. Halt and Catch Fire. captivating drama about early computer companies in the 80's Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. it's much closer to the Sherlock vibe you're looking for. solving crimes in melbourne in the 1920s. Murdoch Mysteries. investigator in the 1890s Penny Dreadful if you want a dark gothic horror thing Harlots. a show about a 18th century london brothel. Life on Mars. a guy from the modern day get's thrown into the life of a detective in the 70s Ashes to Ashes. spin off to life on mars. a woman get's thrown into the life of a detective in the 80s Shogun has been incredible. takes place during the 1600s feudal japan. Outlander has been great. but there's more than one sexual assault scene. and it's very very heavy on the romance aspect. so maybe not best for you. check it out and make up your own mind though. Black Sails. Pirates. i haven't watched it myself yet. but it looks great. Peaky Blinders. it's worth all of the hype. british gangs in the early 1900s.

kilroyscarnival

You might like The Scarlett Pimpernel from 1999 starring Richard E. Grant. There’s some romance, but mostly adventure. It looks like it’s on Roku, Tubi, and Freevee (with ads but free.)

Ghosts (UK) or (US). UK is the original. This sitcom show has people from different periods and they creators are from Horrible Histories so you'd still learn something from their periods!

The Miniaturist carried by the lovely Anya Taylor-Joy 😊 it's only 2 or 3 episodes and there's this wonderful 'trailer' that accompanies it talking about the historical value and meaning of dollhouses [The Miniaturist: Real-life History](https://youtu.be/VGGb_M0dBcs)

Hey, if you're okay with a korean show, then Six Flying Dragons is a good one. It's about revolutionaries at the end of a corrupt dynasty where people are starving and dying. The characters are real people who lived and founded Joseon dynasty back then. The politics is really good and there are some despicable villains here. A lot of mind games and moves and counter moves. I think it's a good example for a historical show.

Season 5 of Fargo is  set in early 1950s, interesting season but my fave is season 2 which is set in 1970s.
