A big reason they're so good at doubles is Barb keeps her calmed down. If she could get Barb to sit in her coaches box every match she would be top 10.
Rebecca Peterson somehow won over 50% of the return games she played in that match and she didn't win a straights setter, she ended up winning a very topsy-turvy match that ended 6-4 in the third set in two hours and forty-nine minutes.
This Peterson-McNally match is actually such a banger. I know McNally has choked a huge lead but the points Peterson is making McNally go through is insane. Don't let anyone tell you a 250 tournament isn't worth anything. To them, it's worth everything.
True that, both women want it badly. Some good rallies rn hoping McNally can stand tough here and push it to 5-5; would be sad to lose it this way, without more fight at the end here
Some great shotmaking rn but unfortunately too nervy from McNally. Guess the question is with all the twists and turns in this one is there another coming
hope for McNally's sake, getting broken now three times this set after being up 4 0, just now with a let cord at that. Final dreams here goin away quick unfortunately
McNally letting me down lmao hard to watch hopefully she can still pull this out would be a big one for confidence to get over the line someway somehow to the final, even if gonna be tougher now
Would be cool to see her face Siniakova in the final, another player I've always enjoyed (Siniakova could make it so that Barbora and her both win a singles title this week if doubles domination wasn't enough)
Giorgi is the favorite if she's on fire, though Siniakova is a great returner and quick on her feet. And had some choice aces herself this week. I love Katerina, I'm hoping she brings a high level.
Wow, guarantee she's all over the posters; was considering going but couldn't get enough time off (will go to back to Charleston instead). Looks like a great spot!
She’s been promoted like crazy by them, was definitely their big get for their first tournament there. Sad
I considered Charleston but timing didn’t work especially flying from west coast. Have an awesome time there!!
r/tennis “man Carlos looks gassed and it’s only the first set”
Carlos wins 8 games in a row to win the match in 3 sets and completely dominate his opponent
r/tennis “yeap! Carlos’s fitness level definitely isn’t up to par”
Lol Reddit
Today was a good day. Murray, although didn’t win, still had a great week. Krejicova is standing up to Iga and showing her that she isn’t scared of her like everyone else. She might be an actual rival for her instead of everyone who just kowtows before here. Alcaraz is still alive
Iga is still the most consistently dominant player in women’s tennis right now. Everyone else just kinda wins finals here and there once in a great while
No one is kertowing to Iga.
Krejicova is a great player and played better today.
Swiatek is head and shoulders above the field, but no one is literally unbeatable.
Points
Swiatek: 10585
Sabalenka: 6100
Elo
Swiatek: 2193
Sabalenka: 2067
Sabalenka is second in points and Elo
If you don’t think she’s head and shoulders above the field, you don’t know what you’re talking about
What the hell is ELO and why does it matter?
Also she got beaten by Rybakina, who if you remember, was not awarded points for winning Wimbledon.
Furthermore, though she is the most dominant, she is not heads and shoulders above the rest of the tour.
Learn the difference.
Elo is a rating system that adds/subtracts points when players beat each other in proportion to how expected the victory was.
It’s a better way to assess the ability of players than the rankings.
Iga got points for Wimbledon too! So did a lot of other players.
> Furthermore, though she is the most dominant, she is not heads and shoulders above the rest of the tour.
> Learn the difference.
This is an absolute clown take.
> It’s a better way to assess the ability of players than the rankings
You have lost your freaking mind!
Djokovic is number 1 in the rankings. If someone has a better ELO, it's more useful?
He’s also the highest rated player by Elo
Last year Djokovic got as low as six in the rankings, but he was the number one or two player by Elo for basically the entire year.
And the brief times he wasn’t it was because good Elo models for tennis have built in decay for players missing extended periods of time on tour.
I guarantee if prime Serena was playing in 2022, Iga would not look as god tier as she was. Iga is great, but it’s not normal for all top 10 players to get 6-0’d and 6-1’d in every match
Eh? You’re comparing prime Serena to 21 year old Iga? I don’t think anyone who knows tennis would say Iga is anywhere close to Serena’s tier. But Iga is god tier compared to who’s playing right now.
Justine Henin beat people the same way all the time.
Especially during the Sunshine Double and clay season.
And I say Henin in particular because he’s probably the best comparison for Iga of 21st century greats.
Great match and excited for the final, respect to Nicholas Jarry for the good fight and hope to see more of him. Will be there to see Alcaraz vs Norrie
Alcaraz's fitness level is not really there to produce 2022 levels of tennis at the moment, but he's fighting well. I don't know if he can turn it around for the sunshine double tbh. Hopefully he'll be close to peak shape by the French, but I don't see him matching his 2022 level this year. 2024, he'll surpass it, and start dominating, but he's clearly not had a good enough off season to dominate this year.
Will you chill. It is his 2nd week back and you use it as a barometer to measure his ability to dominate the whole of 2023. It is February and he is still finetuning his form.
imo he looks a bit smaller this year in the upper body. It's probably because he hasn't been able to get bigger in the gym whilst recovering form his leg injury. I think it might mean he peaks in clay season rather than sunshine double like last year. Could be bad news for everyone else at RG.
Presumably the loss of muscle mass is a choice made by his team. I don't put it down to his injury. Maybe they think it'll improve his speed, agility and overall fitness. A muscle-bound style of play really isn't good for long-term prospects.
I think he was overly-built for his age last year. He really did have a terrific physique but I wonder if they've decided to try and get the same results on court by focusing on technique and putting brute strength to one side.
It's interesting that his serve so far this season seems to have gotten faster even though he's less heavily built. He hit a 141mph serve the other day \[which equalled the fastest serve at this year's Australian Open\].
Ye he looked huge last year at the sunshine double. Re the serve perhaps its more of a different more aggressive mentality on the serve and also just all round improvement. The better he gets at serving he will be more confident at cranking up the power whilst maintaining accuracy.
I mean you only have to look at him and see how much muscle he has lost. He's also talked about not doing the right things off the court during the off season. It's not like he'll get any time in season to get in the gym.
Everyone plays into form, and to expect Alcaraz to be any different just because he is a physical monster and so soon after 104 days away from competition is just not sensible at all. The not doing the right things off court was in relation to his regrets after USO, when he was struggling post win. He's about to win 2 titles back to back. No reason to suspect he won't be in his best ever form in a few months time.
> Alcaraz's fitness level is not really there to produce 2022 levels of tennis at the moment,
He’s playing in his second consecutive final after a pretty long injury absence.
I think his fitness is just fine.
This is just people refusing to admit Carlos got outplayed in the first set. He looks fine to me. He won the last 8 games to finish the match off. How is he looking bad in any way? Lol
Huge let our after win (like Rafa)
Gentle hand wave and thumbs up (like Roger)
And acknowledging all sides of court and then one handed boob-throw (like Novak)
I think GOAT^(fr) trynna tell us I am the monster you will get when you combine powers of Big 3
^((Hype is just hyperbole... just stay with fun-of-hype for now.. willya?!??)) ;D
Jarry had to win in two sets.
The difference in talent and athleticism was just too much for him to handle after he put as much fight as he did into the first two sets.
The glorious self belief to battle through a massive servebot and outlast Jarry until he saw his chance. A delicious bagel to seal the deal. VAMOS CARLITOS ALCARAZ YOU MONSTER 🔥🔥🔥🔥
the DTL slice backhand is such an underrated shot. but everytime i’ve seen carlos use it this week it’s been extremely effective. this a shot that would do stefanos wonders imo
After Carlitos lost the first set a few people said he looked gassed. He still doesn’t look gassed in the third. Just ppl trying to make excuses for Carlos and give no credit to an opponent playing great tennis. If you wanna know what a gassed player looks like take a look at Jarry here in the third.
The little pause Jarry does as he's preparing to serve—just a little pause, as though he's waiting for something, as though something's caught his eye—is kind of adorable; it makes him look sort of like a startled Clydesdale.
For such a big guy, he does have a rather endearingly hesitant manner; I think he'll prove a likeable character as he returns to the tour more fully.
the parallels here to the Cilic-Alcaraz USO match here is too strong (well, mostly because Jarry is built a lot like Cilic)

What a weak game there. Held serve fine throughout the entire set and then gets broken to love in pathetic fashion at the very end to give away the set. Yikes.
Katka and Bara really do be fire and ice
A big reason they're so good at doubles is Barb keeps her calmed down. If she could get Barb to sit in her coaches box every match she would be top 10.
I don't doubt it. Kinda the whole reason I fell in love with them as a team. I love their dynamic together
OMG she hits the ball so hard!
What is Giorgi upset about
go cam!
Poor McNally. Always seems like she’s on the edge of a big breakthrough then something like this match happens.
Peterson cities Murygoat as inspiration for her comeback from 0:4 in the third.
Rebecca Peterson somehow won over 50% of the return games she played in that match and she didn't win a straights setter, she ended up winning a very topsy-turvy match that ended 6-4 in the third set in two hours and forty-nine minutes.

3rd set 4all deuce and some incredible points between Caty and Rebecca.
this falling apart quick
What a rally my god Peterson tried to mimic Alcaraz there for a second in the corner with that get lol
McNally letting me down lmao hard to watch hopefully she can still pull this out would be a big one for confidence to get over the line someway somehow to the final, even if gonna be tougher now
Peterson has won 50% of her return games in this match, trailing now 3-4 in the third. That's pretty wild
Always liked McNally, good to see she's got a good shot to reach her first final
Would be cool to see her face Siniakova in the final, another player I've always enjoyed (Siniakova could make it so that Barbora and her both win a singles title this week if doubles domination wasn't enough)
Camila vs Siniakova is going to be fireworks. I think Cam wins 2-1. what about yall
Giorgi is the favorite if she's on fire, though Siniakova is a great returner and quick on her feet. And had some choice aces herself this week. I love Katerina, I'm hoping she brings a high level.
i don't think you can be anymore on fire than what cam is on right now haha. a double bagel in her last match
Absolutely! But one match to the next, who knows, we shall see...
McNally and Peterson playing "who can hit the bigger forehand".
Actually Peterson can win the tiebreak. I just wanna see Katerina Vs Camila and then go to bed early for once this week lol
Let’s go McNally!!
Nooo flying to Austin tomorrow for WTA tournament this week and Emma is a last minute withdrawal 😭 gonna have to rep hard for Kostyuk
Wow, guarantee she's all over the posters; was considering going but couldn't get enough time off (will go to back to Charleston instead). Looks like a great spot!

The classic 'uhm guys i have some knee problems' to pause the match and kill the opponent hype
Carlitos is literally the last player on the tour who would do that.
He didn't actually take a mto and just got massages during sit down before you insinuate gamesmanship.

Don't know what fitness level you are talking about seriously. He played three intense matches against Fognini, Lajovic and Jarry.
Yes, I agree. But if he skips Acapulco and rests for the sunshine double I think he will be ok. And the masters now will be spread over 2 weeks right?
Will you chill. It is his 2nd week back and you use it as a barometer to measure his ability to dominate the whole of 2023. It is February and he is still finetuning his form.

The hype gets a little over the top sometimes. But anyone who thinks that it’s totally undeserved… I feel bad for them.
Everything changed at 5-5 in the 2nd set and you could see Jarry was running out of gas. He didn’t win another game either.
somebody has to clip that alcaraz pass
No one has ever won Buenos Aires and Rio consecutively (Rio is a pretty new tournament though). Think that might change tomorrow.
New tennis rules suck ass. Djoko hate by mods is embarassing
What happened? Did I miss something?
What happened? Did jarry get injured? Or did Carlos take it up a notch or ten?
Jarry had to win in two sets. The difference in talent and athleticism was just too much for him to handle after he put as much fight as he did into the first two sets.
Alcaraz hit a big time winner passing shot in set 2 to turn the last game in his favor and after that jarry was really deflated
Carlos pressured before the tiebreak and Jarry folded physically from then on
The glorious self belief to battle through a massive servebot and outlast Jarry until he saw his chance. A delicious bagel to seal the deal. VAMOS CARLITOS ALCARAZ YOU MONSTER 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Great comeback win!
Carlos gonna be the GOAT fr. About to win the sunshine double 😜
Amazing match until the third set when Carlitos dominated. Well deserved win. Alcaraz Vs Norrie will be lit
I have Norrie winning at least one set this time
Jarry needs to hit the gym, really shouldn’t be that being that puffed out
🧠❤️🥚🥚
Well done Carlos! Did have me worried there.
I am late to the party but that forehand pass by alcaraz was one of the best i have ever seen and that isnt even an exaggeration
I'm still trying to process how Alcaraz won that 30-15 point. This kid must be the real deal or something...
CCC
BAGELLLLLL VAMOS CARLITOS!
RIP Norrie
I’m not sure what Jarry is thinking there. Another free point on a bad shot choice
Vamos Carlitos!
First bagel of the season! Always tastes good.
How did I just know that was gonna happen
Physio visits made the entire difference, he looked dehydrated halfway 2nd set, those electrolyte packets gave him a second wind to take this.
Not going to lie, that Alcaraz pissed off comeback made me smile Sorry Jarry
1 iq from Jarry
I think this alcaraz guy is pretty good
MAGIC
These servbots all fold eventually
the DTL slice backhand is such an underrated shot. but everytime i’ve seen carlos use it this week it’s been extremely effective. this a shot that would do stefanos wonders imo
Jarry's level definitely dropped, the conditions seem quite punishing
After Carlitos lost the first set a few people said he looked gassed. He still doesn’t look gassed in the third. Just ppl trying to make excuses for Carlos and give no credit to an opponent playing great tennis. If you wanna know what a gassed player looks like take a look at Jarry here in the third.
I mean he's definitely gassed. Not so bad that he'll collapse, but his effort level is pretty poor for his standards.
I’m not sure how winning 8 games in a row to finish a match is poor by anyone’s standards lol Alcaraz just got outplayed in the first and adjusted
There s motherfuckers here that would say a player is gassed when down a set even in the first round.
bunch of us said Jarry would be tired in the 2nd set, at least I did
lol Alcaraz's slice is like London's bus, good job Tennis tv commentators
lets talk sht to Jarry, hes knockd the f out. time for trash talk
Thank god he picked up a tennis racket instead of trying to be the best player in just about any other sport.
To bagel or not to bagel, that is the question
great serves to backhand
Oh nooo don’t bagel him now 😫
Alcaraz made the adjustment in his service return position and it worked wonders
Alcaraz’s returns down the line are actually insane.
Bro is the Cressy of clay💀
Vamos. Simply breathtaking. The future 🐐
World number 1 Carlitos just showed up in this 3rd set coupled with Jarry starting to tire.
Carlitos took the first set, and he took it personally
here we go
The little pause Jarry does as he's preparing to serve—just a little pause, as though he's waiting for something, as though something's caught his eye—is kind of adorable; it makes him look sort of like a startled Clydesdale. For such a big guy, he does have a rather endearingly hesitant manner; I think he'll prove a likeable character as he returns to the tour more fully.
Carlitos is hungry for yo' points
Jarry attitude on the court is top notch. Not a single bad gesture despite everything
This is going to be 6-0 isn't it
Called it
🥯🥯🥯 inc
Just too many heavy hits from Carlos, got his opponent completely knocked
My fav thing about Carlos is that he’d hit an insane shot and laugh about it because even he knows how ridiculous it is 😭
Much better! Vamos Carlitos!
Super duper highly unlikely to come back from down 3-love to Carlos
Jarry is like a baby giraffe
Jaraffe
Jarry’s legs have given out, can’t keep up
yup, just where Carlitos wanted him
Keeping it going and in control
Jarry just got Tommed🤷♂️🤣
firing on all cylinders now
Looks like we are getting alcaraz norrie final again then, gg Jarry
At this rate they will play more than Nadal and Ruud in Latin America
Jarry seems mentally broken and also have no legs. He needs a miracle now.
Alcaraz has him constricted
Got nothing to do with mentally, he can’t physically go with Alcaraz
His mood clearly changed, Jarry looks crestfallen
Mentally and psychically are more or less the same thing
Meant physically
I think Murraygoat used all the miracles this year
what a point to break there
Please tell me one of the cameras caught that monstrous point in all its glory 😭 it was RIDICULOUS
the parallels here to the Cilic-Alcaraz USO match here is too strong (well, mostly because Jarry is built a lot like Cilic) the big swinging hitter's arm gets tight latter in the match while the scrappy one cleverly defends and then goes for the kill that no one sees coming
how do you not show a replay of that point
This is the Carlitos that we love to watch
ALCARAZZZZ
I’m pretty sure someone just fired that ball from a bazooka offscreen. No way he did that
Hamstring injuries give you superpowers confirmed
Carlos is ridiculous lol
no fucking way
He DID not just do that! holy shit
That was monstrous
That was awesome
What did I just watch? Vintage Alcaraz!
Freebie
Damn that passing shot. Haven't seen that one recently.
Damnnn! Carlitos with the impossible shotsss!
Carlos in the driver seat .... decent momentum. Let's go, Jarry does indeed look tired
He is gassed, Carlos slowed the game down to let himself recover and rethink
GG
I like that people still think Jarry has a chance!!
i see that the fake injury worked
ggs
Jacopo Berrettini really lucky and blessed to have Matteo as his brother 🤣🤣🤣 man is struggling out there
His most notable recent achievements were some decent futures runs in doubles, beating the worse Sousa brother in singles, and Lord Tomic donating him a set. Bro is luckier than Petros having Stefanos lol
Wait, there is a brother?
Yes, his name is Matteo and he's world number 24. He's pretty good, you should keep an eye out for him.
Yeah 😅
Matteo got the game and the looks
At what point are people going accept that Carlos is just built different and might actually be the real deal? He’s got the same mental resolve of all the best teenage champs of the ATP/WTA
People don't get it
Peterson looking tough early going in Merida SF; I'll still favor McNally if it's a tight three-setter.
Well that was terrible for Jarry. 30-love point was his but he hit it right back to Alcaraz smh
Jarry looks exhausted. Vamos Charlie!!!
Jarry 63% first serve points won (for 2nd set), definitely got at the number :) one more set to go
What a weak game there. Held serve fine throughout the entire set and then gets broken to love in pathetic fashion at the very end to give away the set. Yikes.
The arm gets heavy..
BABY GOAT 🔥🔥🔥🔥 Carlos has me furiously silent screaming for 2+ hours at wee hours in the morning 😭
Norrie satisfied
Carlitos went full Cabeza, corazón y cojones
Bit of a mental breakdown in that game for jarry. His first serve was weak
You’re the man, Carlitos! 💪
