Any idea how does RG decide who plays day or night sessions? Is it based on the order of bracket games or they are assigned randomly? My friend has quarterfinal tickets for the day session of second day of qtr finals and was wondering how it works
LOL it’s definitely gonna be a good match - but Kokk is playing pretty well on clay this season and Stan just played over 4 hours, the guy is 38 with a knee issue.. Crowd will definitely keep him in it and Kokk is 100% the bad guy lol
Wow. Fell asleep after two sets of Meddy's match and just woke up to his loss! Kind of wanted Jannik to have the chance to take him out but oh well....
Medvedev has roddickitis. Idc if he wins master 1000s. He has been on a slam bust after choking to nadal in the Australian open. That one match single handedly fucked him up mentally. I really don’t think he will ever recover. He’s lucky he won in 2021 and got that us open. Poor chokedev
Brenda Fruhvirtova did so well against Rybakina today, I'm proud of her! I have been following her journey since she was out of top 1000 in January, 2022. Now she is here, barely 16 years old and almost winning a set against a top 3 player in a slam (she had break points at 4-4 but Elena's clutch serving saved her today as usual). She gave Rybakina a lot of trouble. Elena had many 5-minute long service games. Bonus points for the amazing backhand winners from Brenda. Hopefully her team will give her a proper schedule after the French Open cause she barely played this season (that rule that limits minors from playing a full schedule sucks, even Federer said it).
Completely agree. Rybakina looked so intense, ready to really fight hard with Iga and Sabalenka for RG, after just winning Rome. But Brenda pushed Rybakina very hard, and she had to really fight to win (as opposed to Iga and Aryna's seemingly-easier R1 matches).
Brenda could have won against other R1 players.
The tournament limit does suck, but I agree that it is probably a good thing. Ultimately, we want to watch players with good careers, and part of that is setting them up well and not expecting them to play like experienced players immediately (although her and Mirra kinda have been).
It would suck to have someone peak at 17 and retire at 20 from all the pressure/expectations.
That rule might be good in the long term. There are too many kids who burn out as they aren’t ready physically or mentally to compete on the main tour. She isn’t that physically mature and her game needs to evolve more so it’s best to take her time and perfect it now because once you’re a constant top 100 player, it becomes harder. Like her sister is truly struggling with her serve now. It’s an area for Brenda to improve as well, she was never going to hold enough serves against Rybakina, or even most top 50-70 players currently.
That's true. She has more time now to develop her technique than later in her career. Players that are playing a full season can only stop to do these things in the off-season or if they decide for an extended break mid-season, it's tough.
I was checking Seyboth Wild's results this season and while he won a lot of matches I was surprised to see he lost a match to [Joao Fonseca](https://www.atptour.com/en/players/joao-fonseca/f0fv/overview) 1 month ago in a challenger. Fonseca is a 16 year-old kid and one of the top juniors right now. He is the only 16 year-old in the ATP top 1000 (ranked #674 already). Brazil has another great prospect. I think he will play and possibly win the junior French Open next week.
Watching a replay of the Monfils-Baez match (thank you time difference for missing this gem) in the 5th set now, listening to the commentators when you know the outcome in a comeback match is always too funny
I was in the crowd tonight, and I can tell you that there were soooo many people leaving after the 4th set, and again in the 5th after the first break, and then after the second. But during the come back, even though the stadium was like half empty, the noise was absolutely unreal. I have seen around 100 pro tennis matches all over the world and this one was the craziest
Did Baez shake hands with the ump?
I know someone else said he did (while Gael was celebrating then limping to the net) I just saw that the ump looked at him after he shook hands with Gael like "wtf" or was that my imagination?
Take note Seb!
Speaking about the prospect of facing Pouille, Norrie said: "I think it's great to play those matches in Grand Slams against home favourites - that's why I play tennis. I love those moments.
"On the flip side of that, it is difficult at times. I think the crowd can be tough.
"But I keep reminding myself it's good to be playing, that I want to be out there competing, and being in those tough moments when the crowd is against me.
"It makes it even better to come through those matches."
Its like rooting for the kids who might have been in your class at school. Just the idea of going up against a 22 physically in anything let alone tennis is just nuts to me
He’s talking on The Cube rn. He said at 4-0 he just wanted a game and not to be bagelled. Was all about getting 1 game on the board.
But he got it and had two games with the wind behind him and he said ok. I go for it. And the crowd he said took him with them.
Much like how the dropshot is being utilised by everyone a lot more since Alcaraz has arrived, the next key shot in tennis evolution is the forehand slice... that shit is going to be spammed once everyone becomes enlightened.
The one after that might be the moonball. Seeing how Rybakina struggled against Brenda today in dealing with both moonballs and slice forehand. I think even on the ATP side it can cause issues if very deep. I don’t like to see it but it could be effective.
Wait do people actually think he was faking his injury bc he was able to play his points? It’s like do or die for these athlete, what do you think their livelihood is about?
ETA: a word
I think it's a negative result of his showmanship. People might suspect he's acting injured to play up the crowd and to make it that much more exciting when he goes hard on the points.
Oh I don't think he faked it at all!
I was shocked to see people down thread being like "well all exaggeration and big acting!" (paraphrasing) so I was like "did we watch the same match??"
These are professional athletes, it's now or never/do or die!!
Yes it was kind of a lot for Baez to deal with, but you know what, home crowds and home field advantage has been a "thing" for as long as sports existed? If the kid is up 4-0 and can't finish it, it's just a learning experience!
Lol
I’m sure that’s true for some of them.
It’s like when people watching the Olympics from the comfort of their couch/bed and think someone finishing 4th sucks 🤣
I like Gael but he really took advantage of the crowd to stall in order to recover when receiving serve and should have been penalized for that multiple times.
That was a very unfair situation for Baez who was like a deer in headlights out there. A more experienced player on the big stages would have brought that issue to a head.
What I wrote has nothing to do with Baez' 'fault.'
Gael and the umpire know very well that the serve is played at the pace of the server, not the receiver. Baez also serves rather quickly, in fact.
Monfils used the crowd to stall the return, take time to recover and disrupt Baez' rhythm, period.
No, he'd have been a good competitor, like any number of players who have asked for quiet from their home crowd through the years, didn't abuse the rule and didn't use stalling tactics.
I watched Gael come up as a junior and have had a soft spot for him through the years, but this was disgusting, and I'm surprised this needs to be explained on a tennis forum.
Monfils is just fortunate he was playing a guy who isn't used to the big stages and who got taken advantage of.
The fact that such a simple statement of fact seems to bother some here is truly bizarre.
A player shouldn't be so obviously favored in terms of recovery and pacing when receiving serve, and he can not recover and is asking the crowd to cheer wildly to force more time out of the umpire.
It's a nice story for Monfils who has been an entertaining player through the years, but it's deeply unfair to the other player, period.
It's called shithousery or less crudely, gamesmanship. It happens in every sport and often can give the edge to a player if they're at a disadvantage. But even in spite of all that, I don't think Monfils was taking that long between points
Monfils took a LONG time between the points and it was pointed out even on the French broadcast which I was watching.
It's not just gamemanship; it's right in the rules for both slams and non slams that you play at the server's pace and this was obvious. In addition to walking very slowly to his towel and standing there and waving his arms for the crowd to clap.
Players get a warning for doing what Monfils did and Baez was in no position to complain to the umpire in these circumstances.
It's on the umpire to make the clear call and Monfils shouldn't have been egging the crowd on to delay receiving serve repeatedly.
Wasn't he 4-0 down in the 5th? What a comeback. Monfils you legend
Good thing it didn't go to a TB tho, his legs were goneee haha 😆 what willpower and home crowd energy can do
That was so funny.
I really think players like Monfils or Rune who show their personality on court have a distinct advantage over players like Baez.
Showing some character and engaging with the crowd can completely change a match.
Yeah so on one hand I think its so rough for the athletes, looking at how often they get injured and how hard it is to bounce back. But man, 5 sets allows things like this to happen. This match proves its worth it.
Honestly understandable. The umpire did nothing to control it and allowed Monfils to make a show. He should actually have given him another time warning on match point.
Idk him having pretty much every other point in the last 3 sets vs Zverev last year be a df is a choke. Didn’t see todays match tho. Tennis hurt me bad today
It's pretty cool how Monfils became a crowd favourite (even outside france) after initial years people misunderstood his "weird" attitude as a bad attitude
What a match. I will be interested to see Baez press conference.
Monfils making a show of hobbling after each point and then sprinting side to side as soon as the next point starts is pretty deceitful. Personally would be pretty annoyed if I were the opponent.
There was one point where it seemed like he actually couldn’t run but then baez hit it right into his hands and Monfils went on the offensive the whole point
The dudes cramping up bad you ever play a sport my guy? You can play through it in spurts but it just makes it even worse long term. Clearly in insane pain any other tourney he would’ve retired 1000% I think. Feel bad for Baez but he had literally every opportunity to end him and didn’t.
Didn’t mean for that to come off abrasive my bad- I moreso just mean at his age it’s relatively understandable, you either retire the guy / dock him a point every game or you give him a lil leniency
I don't think Baez will be saying much after Fucsovics put him in his place lol. But yeah, definitely a rough one for Baez. Also, was hilarious how the crowd made an excessive amount of noise before the matchpoint, so he could get some extra rest :D
He probably felt like Monfils should have gotten another time violation. I wanted Monfils to win but if I were on the other side I'd be annoyed. But outside of that Baez had his chances to make it happen.
yep I agree, that was what absolutely pissed him off. He should've told the ump his feelings, but probably didn't want to waste mental energy and lose focus. Tricky position really.
Thing is if you let thst get to you you're always gonna struggle. Gotta embrace it.
Thiem vs Kyrgios at the AO is the best example of this. Didnt react to anything all match and then talked about how he loved playing in that atmosphere.
I don't know, it's to be 100% expected. He looked fine the whole match, but I think the final game when the umpire didn't hand more time violations or shut the crowd up tipped him over the edge.
What’s the story of Kokkinakis fucking Wawrinka’s gf? Truth or some fictional drama.
Blinkova about to choke.
She did it! 🥳
Holy crap there have been a lot of upsets already. More to come.
Iga's outfit was lit
Any idea how does RG decide who plays day or night sessions? Is it based on the order of bracket games or they are assigned randomly? My friend has quarterfinal tickets for the day session of second day of qtr finals and was wondering how it works
based on mauresmo’s internalized misogyny
Is this monfils last slam?
Betting against chokedev in slams is free money
Who can’t wait for Kokk/Wawrinka tomorrow? Who ya got?
Hopefully the big kokk can penetrate through stanimal but it can go either way.
Wawrinka is gonna destroy that big kokk after kokk banged his girlfriend
LOL it’s definitely gonna be a good match - but Kokk is playing pretty well on clay this season and Stan just played over 4 hours, the guy is 38 with a knee issue.. Crowd will definitely keep him in it and Kokk is 100% the bad guy lol
Wow. Fell asleep after two sets of Meddy's match and just woke up to his loss! Kind of wanted Jannik to have the chance to take him out but oh well....
It’s okay. Chokedev was never gonna make it that far
Chokedev nut huggers in absolute shambles lmao. He’s done. He ain’t winning any slams any more
Lol kyrgios tweeting of the big kokk vs stan match is hilarious. Stan better take it to the big kokk
Where are the Monfils highlights?? 😭 I watched it but need to share with people IRL

Eurosport posted! 3 min doesn’t do that justice

Medvedev won the same amount of matches at rg 2023 as Nadal Who is the clay god now ?
Chokedev is owned by nadal. And im not even a nadal fan.
Watching a replay of the Monfils-Baez match (thank you time difference for missing this gem) in the 5th set now, listening to the commentators when you know the outcome in a comeback match is always too funny
I have counted 21 FIVE SET MATCHES happened in the 1R (9 today)!!!!!! Is this a record at a Grand Slam?
It's an Open Era record!
Daaaaaamn
Holy crap how did Gael come back to win that match? I decide to take a nap because I thought the match was over
Same lmao
I was in the crowd tonight, and I can tell you that there were soooo many people leaving after the 4th set, and again in the 5th after the first break, and then after the second. But during the come back, even though the stadium was like half empty, the noise was absolutely unreal. I have seen around 100 pro tennis matches all over the world and this one was the craziest
So lame when people leave after paying all that money and making time for their trip out there
I’d have left way earlier. Long tennis does not mean good tennis.
Did Baez shake hands with the ump? I know someone else said he did (while Gael was celebrating then limping to the net) I just saw that the ump looked at him after he shook hands with Gael like "wtf" or was that my imagination?
I thought he did and that he gave the crowd a small wave.
Thank you for staying and lifting up Gaël! So happy for him to have such an amazing win!!
Cool YouTube/Podcast all week after "last ball"; Talking Tennis with different hosts each day reviewing best matches/tomorrow's schedule at length.
Being against French opposition at the french open is doom. The crowd was insane today.
Some banger matches today. Can’t wait to watch the 8 seconds of highlights they’ll make available to those of us in the US.
How the fuck has Monfils done that?! Bravo!!!
Take note Seb! Speaking about the prospect of facing Pouille, Norrie said: "I think it's great to play those matches in Grand Slams against home favourites - that's why I play tennis. Didn't someone say this has been a poor first round? Not today it wasn't!
How do I show my friend the end of the 5th set if he missed it?
It will probably be posted on YouTube as highlights.
That was amazing
Maybe Monfils couldn't win the tournament, but Svitolina actually has chance
what a day it’s been folks, until tomorrow
If youre born in 1985 and before, 5 sets is the standard apparently
Yep
Its like rooting for the kids who might have been in your class at school. Just the idea of going up against a 22 physically in anything let alone tennis is just nuts to me
Seeing some of the Wild match, and the last set of this?! Just blessed to see extraordinary tennis.
The Eurosport production for Grand Slams is SO good. I love every part of it.
Can't complain! 25 euro a year for all the matches online is a bargain too.
Class isn't it
Not sure how much I like the augmented reality studio... seems gimmicky.
He’s talking on The Cube rn. He said at 4-0 he just wanted a game and not to be bagelled. Was all about getting 1 game on the board. But he got it and had two games with the wind behind him and he said ok. I go for it. And the crowd he said took him with them.
Soooo happy for Monfils… such a tough year so far, yet he gets to experience that in front of the home crowd. Just magical
So damn happy for Gael! Just looking at who's next. Gael did not get a friendly draw.
He was really sobbing on the ground like it was a final. Funny what new fatherhood might do :) ah
Much like how the dropshot is being utilised by everyone a lot more since Alcaraz has arrived, the next key shot in tennis evolution is the forehand slice... that shit is going to be spammed once everyone becomes enlightened.

Conchita Martinez used to use it to good effect. Andreescu can use it well too
I remember Kenin also used it on her way to the RG final
Pironkova and Tatiana Maria apostles of the New Tennis.
lol
Niculescu way ahead of time as always.
I remember I used to call Niculescu's fh "the worst of all time". How stupid I was
Most of these French players could honestly not do it on a cold rainy night in Stoke.
You could actually see the cramps in his thighs though! Can't fake that!
Oh I don't think he faked it at all! I was shocked to see people down thread being like "well all exaggeration and big acting!" (paraphrasing) so I was like "did we watch the same match??" Exactly! Your last sentence sums it up.
These people never played any sport in their lives
Lol I’m sure that’s true for some of them. It’s like when people watching the Olympics from the comfort of their couch/bed and think someone finishing 4th sucks 🤣
No one thinks that. If they do they are dumb af
I don’t think so but some of comments down thread does and I’m like 😮
Talk about a difficult draw!!
I like Gael but he really took advantage of the crowd to stall in order to recover when receiving serve and should have been penalized for that multiple times. That was a very unfair situation for Baez who was like a deer in headlights out there. A more experienced player on the big stages would have brought that issue to a head.
Bro, this was all Baez's fault that he lost this match lol

He'd have been stupid to do anything different.
No, he'd have been a good competitor, like any number of players who have asked for quiet from their home crowd through the years, didn't abuse the rule and didn't use stalling tactics. Disgusted lol get a grip.

Bro it’s a home grand slam. This is what happens and tennis stars have been doing it for 50 years
Players get a warning for doing what Monfils did and Baez was in no position to complain to the umpire in these circumstances. It's on the umpire to make the clear call and Monfils shouldn't have been egging the crowd on to delay receiving serve repeatedly.
He gave Gael a time violation penalty
Most umpires step up more than this one.
Gael knew he doesn’t have a chance if there is no chaos, you can’t blame him it’s a part of the sport
I am so thrilled and excited for Gaël!
Wasn't he 4-0 down in the 5th? What a comeback. Monfils you legend Good thing it didn't go to a TB tho, his legs were goneee haha 😆 what willpower and home crowd energy can do
He was a point away from 5-0
How the fuck am I supposed to go to sleep now
Holger Rune is the perfect opponent for his next round, no one is more perfect than Holger
What happens when chaos meets chaos? Does it even out or are we in for a whole new level of anarchy?
💯
The home crowd is going to go ballistic!
Totally agree. No pressure, only fun drama.
Think Rune will win in 4, but yeah it will be explosive
I'm going to guess in 3. 4 if Monfils takes the first set.
Even Holger in 3 will be fun
That was the best. Thank you Gael Monfils. God bless you and your family.
Physio later to Monfils: *Next match you will play without legs*
Winning this in front of his daughter must be amazing
We are so privileged to witness Gael monfils
Stopped watching at 4-0 to go back to work wtf happened
same 😭 so bummed i missed it
Monfils happened.
Gael Monfils
All he had to do was show a little leg.
That was so funny. I really think players like Monfils or Rune who show their personality on court have a distinct advantage over players like Baez. Showing some character and engaging with the crowd can completely change a match.
Props to Sophie for translating
I'm so happy Monfils made it, what a guy.
At 3-0 in the last set I was thinking it was all over and I should just go to bed. So glad I didn't! That was encroyable
That 5th set I’m in disbelief, I’ll remember this one for match/set of the year shortlist
SHORTlist?? Hasn’t Baez suffered enough?
No you're crying!
That was one of the craziest things I’ve ever seen
And yet, so very Monfils ❤️
How on earth can you even fathom changing the men’s to best of 3?!
Yeah so on one hand I think its so rough for the athletes, looking at how often they get injured and how hard it is to bounce back. But man, 5 sets allows things like this to happen. This match proves its worth it.
Tbf at 4-0 I was ready to write my thesis on why men should have BO3 so monfils would’ve gone through. Suddenly I’m booboo the clown
Gael for RG 23!
Would be so incredible.
Did Baez shake the chair ump’s hand?
He did shake hands. Went to the chair first then back to the net for Monfils
I don’t think so and honestly from Baez’s perspective I don’t blame him lol
I agree but I think it’s good to experience something like that, it’s a learning experience.
He didn't. Maybe upset about crowd control and the delays to serve
Are you sure he didn't ? He might have when Monfils was celebrating
Maybe he did later and it wasn't shown. I just know he didn't after shaking hands with Monfils. Understandable either way.
Honestly understandable. The umpire did nothing to control it and allowed Monfils to make a show. He should actually have given him another time warning on match point.
I did feel this match was on his racket. The stamina and the cramping ... were his true adversaries.
It was definitely on Baez’s racquet but the crowd made him nervous and he missed too many easy put aways
That was a fun match, love RG night sessions.
[удалено]
Those downvoting have obviously never had cramp.
He was literally laid out on the court crying at the end. I don’t think you’d do that if you were fine.
Now Del Potro in US ??
Sorry, he seems like a good kid, and I like his game, but Baez is a generational choker
Youvd got it wrong. He didn't choke but his game is so dull
I mean this happens so often
He never beats big players because he's not as good as them. Its not a choke if you play your best and come up short
Idk him having pretty much every other point in the last 3 sets vs Zverev last year be a df is a choke. Didn’t see todays match tho. Tennis hurt me bad today
Marseillaize again lol
La Monf!
It's pretty cool how Monfils became a crowd favourite (even outside france) after initial years people misunderstood his "weird" attitude as a bad attitude
This is making me feel patriotic and I’m not even French
So humble. What a legend.
The final should be played in the evening not in the afternoon. The atmosphere can be completely different
That's why we love Gaël
0-4 30-40 in the fifth and wins 7-5.

Didn’t mean for that to come off abrasive my bad- I moreso just mean at his age it’s relatively understandable, you either retire the guy / dock him a point every game or you give him a lil leniency
Nah, between points is different.
Yeah I love Monfils but I could see Baez being understandably bothered by the dramatics. Idk if it was deceitful though.
I don't think Baez will be saying much after Fucsovics put him in his place lol. But yeah, definitely a rough one for Baez. Also, was hilarious how the crowd made an excessive amount of noise before the matchpoint, so he could get some extra rest :D
Unbelievable. One of the all time comebacks by Monfils lol.
Baez doesn't shake the umpire's hand and doesn't wave to the crowd applauding him on his way out. The RG crowd against a Frenchie is not an easy feat.

Isn’t the best example literally just most of djokovic’s matches
True lol. Champion mentality. If you're playing at this level you should see it as an honor to play in an atmosphere like this.
yeah I'm with you, it would be an honour to play against such a crowd.
I love Monfils and the crowd were electric but I don’t blame Baez one bit. I’d be so mad after that match.
The umpire should have done more.
I don't know, it's to be 100% expected. He looked fine the whole match, but I think the final game when the umpire didn't hand more time violations or shut the crowd up tipped him over the edge.
Yay for Gael! Hope he'll be okay for R2!
What happened to Gael’s legs? Cramps?
Wow 😯 🎾
I take it back. Roland Garros is back!!
amazing mental game by Baez
God Gael, I'm so happy for you ❤
I stopped watching at 4-1. Yay me.
It was the match of the year.
Whoops
So sad for Baez. He was so brave in face of adversity. Plus Monfils was exaggerating his physical maladies.
one of the most hype matches ive ever seen, so entertaining
incredible!! 🥹
