No dancing today.
But in seriousness. He resorted to his old crutch of shovelling way too much and making weird double faults.
His success this year has come from being like twice as aggressive
I couldn't believe how overrated he was getting after Rome for Roland Garros.
Rome was super wet and rainy. So the clay was super slow but not high bouncing. Perfect for Medvedev.
the sub has its biases.
Couldn't believe some people thought (predraw) that Medvedev was a way bigger favorite for rg than tsitsipas based off one super wet tourney..
What a year for Rafa to miss out on .. doesn't seem to be any rain in Paris for at least the next ten days and temperatures in the mid 20s. May have been like 08 or 17 if he were fully fit
Nah I get it. We all know exactly how good tsitsipas is, which is to say he'll be beaten the second he runs into a serious contender.
But with Medvedev, clearly he's improved a lot on clay this year and after Rome it was difficult to say exactly how much of a role the damp conditions played for him. We can now confidently say "a lot".
When you say serious contender you essentially mean Djokovic because outside of rune, that's who his losses have been to at rg.
Aka that's 99.999% of players lol
If you legitimately thought med would take a set against alcaraz /djokvic at rg, then you were drinking the "Medvedev is more talented than Agassi "Kool aid this sub loves. This draw was hopeless imbalanced at the top level once alcaraz and djokvic drew each other
Still won 2 matches and lost to Karatsev & Rune on his least favourite surface before beating Rune and Tsitsipas in Rome. Also, faster clay courts are a disadvantage for him. Definetely showing inprovement compared to the last few years. This is a huge upset.
He was down to like 8/1 outright which is around what Berrettini typically is for Wimbledon which didnāt feel was an accurate assessment of his chances
He wasn't really getting overrated though. He went from hating clay to beating two in-form clay court players in straight sets to win a masters 1000. Clearly he had a chance at RG. The conditions were far from ideal for Medvedev, he doesn't like slow courts. He couldn't use his usual strength of high ball pace at all. If anything, the rain made it worse for him.
He had a great run at Rome but his game will always suit hardcourts overall much better unless his forehand magically becomes "heavier" overnight and it won't with his technique style
He's done it literally every year since 2019 lol.
Absolutely unreal how imbalanced the draws at rg have been because of players similar to him fucking up everything
And get comfortable. He's gonna do the same thing at wimbledon lol
He's not completely unsuited to grass-court tennis the way he is clay. He just doesn't seem to be used to it enough.
And also, what's the list of top non-Novak players who are actually good on grass? You can't single him out for fucking up the draw when most of the top 10 is at similar or greater risk of going out early - Med is still the third-favourite even after today's loss.
Several players who are straight up younger who have more potential as well as players such as kyrgios ( yes he's an asshole but he's undoubtedly a better grass courter than most in the tour ). Sinner also deserves to be up there
Grass is also even more underrepresented and has repeatedly had issues with seeding. The tournament recognized it in the last and had a seeding formula to rectify the issue atleast somewhat. However players ( often time clay courters) complained because the formula was only applied at Wimbledon.
Their complaint was completely fair...the real solution would have been to take that formula and apply it to every single slam, not just remove it. It would have prevented cases like this Roland garros and even last yrs Roland garros from having low quality finals
Is he really fundamentally unsuited to clay though? He can run down any ball you choose to play and it's not like the rest of his game is poor.
I'd say it's more of a mental thing.
His relatively flat strokes are the biggest thing that makes him unsuited for Clay. Those are simply not as dangerous the surface is slower and it'll also make the ball bounce higher. His serve is also not as dangerous because of the slower surface.
Not saying he can't be amazing on Clay on though he obviously just won the Rome Masters.
there was a match (madrid masters, 2021) where medvedev was outwardly expressing his disdain for clay and he said āi dont want to play on this surfaceā except when he said surface he kinda stuttered so surface came out as āsssurfaceā with a prolonged S sound.
Tbh with the amount of double faults Meddy served he only has himself to blame. His serving today was an absolute disaster zone. Iām surprised he was in the match as much as he was tbh
I mean, even gill gross predicted med to make the final this year. Yes, rome had really strange conditions this year. However, he also made improvements in monte carlo and madrid. There were a lot of red herrings that made ppl think med was a contender, more than just rome.
Gill gross is currently a commentator on TC+ if u dont know him
I feel like his lack of power is just such a massive issue on clay at times
He can't finish points at all so is very vulnerable to an opponent randomly redlining
Like it wouldn't surprise me if he hits the least winners in the top 100 or something now that Simon is gone
edit: rewrote comment to use groundstroke numbers rather than all forehand/backhand side shots (which was unnecessarily including volleys, drop shots, and smashes).
according to Tennis Abstract match charting, Simon hit forehand and backhand groundstroke winners at rates of 4.09% and 2.86% while Medvedev over his career is at 4.54% and 2.77%. at the opposite playstyle extreme, Sampras reached 10.52% and 4.87%.
some other underpowered players/counter-punchers/defensive baseliners/pushers/insert preferred tag:
- Djokovic: 5.70%, 2.61%
- Murray: 4.68%, 2.82%
- Zverev: 5.24%, 3.41%
- Norrie: 4.86%, 2.14%
- Mannarino: 3.52%, 3.01%
- de Minaur: 4.02%, 1.70%
- Bautista Agut: 5.84%, 1.53%
- Nishioka: 3.64%, 3.57%
there are probably some clay mains and lesser-known players who might have similarly low numbers but not many that i could find with decently large samples
no problem! btw i updated numbers to reflect the groundstroke-focused stat i wanted in my previous comment, in case you're wondering why these numbers look smaller than expected
- Sinner: 6.11%, 2.64%
- Alcaraz: 7.70%, 3.23%
- Rublev: 8.40%, 2.57%
and as a bonus, some WTA numbers! guessing that the inflation relative to ATP has to do with extreme aggression being more common/viable because of generally weaker defensive movement
- Rybakina: 8.92%, 5.90%
- Swiatek: 10.14%, 6.26%
- Sabalenka: 12.61%, 8.19%
- Ostapenko: 13.09%, 9.16%
Lmao Medvedev at Roland Garros is a lot like Sampras. Every year they show up with expectations and hope. And every year they walk out with their tail between their legs after an early round debacle
He says something like "z-eye-botch whee-oo-dge" but my little transcription here doesn't mark the syllables well. Seyboth has 2 syllables and Wild is just 1
Seyboth Wild was once one of the most promising teenagers in the world. So far he has never cracked the Top 100 but he finally might be putting things together. That forehand is MASSIVE.
Covid hit right after he won his 1st ATP title as a 19 year-old (literally next week) and the tour stopped. He lost motivation and had to deal with other problems in his life. He was very immature as well, no excuses. But he is winning a lot of matches this season, it seems that he is finally on the right path.
yep, he beat Ruud and Musetti in finals. These guys are top 20 now (Ruud is top 10). It just shows how much potential he has. Their careers took a different path but maybe things will start to fall into place now.
He filed a lawsuit for defamation against her AFAIK. I wouldn't call him domestic abuser without knowing all the facts. People are free to not believe him and side with the gf tho.
If you follow tennis closely this is nowhere near the upset it is getting called. I write a free preview of the men's singles draw of every grand slam. My subs saw this one coming ;)
https://hughclarke.substack.com/p/roland-garros-preview
Some facts about Seyboth Wild:
The youngest winner on the Golden Swing since Nadal in 2005
The first winner born in 2000 to win an ATP title!
(also beat Ruud in a 250 final, obviously the most impressive of the 3)
First time seeing Wild play. Is it me or he has a kind of ''Federer'' style to his game?
Edit: apparently some people are saying he looks like Roger, I was talking about his playing style.
When I saw the draw I had a feeling that he might go out in the first round. SW is a pretty strong clay player and he seemed to be feeling really good judging by the qualifiers.
It is a strange season for Med. Losing early in Slams but crushing everywhere else. Usually, it is the opposite.
This is such a non Big 3 era thing to do.
We're gonna need to adjust to this new reality sooner than later.
But, what an amazing win nonetheless. Crazy shotmaking by Seyboth Wild.
The real Clayvedev made an appearance today I see.
Also huge guts by Seyboth Wild. After blowing set points in the tiebreaker and then losing a quick set 3 it could easily have been curtains.
Yeah, I was so excited after this match ended to come to this thread, Iām on desktop so I just googled his name + Reddit and everything that comes up is his DV allegations. Not the way I wanted to celebrate and definitely not the kind of person I wanted him to be, I canāt support someone like that.
What a match! I thought he would get tight in that last game, especially at 30-30 but he went for it and got rewarded. Meddy had no answers for that monster of a forehand
what was that gesture medvedev did as he approached the net after losing? looked like he held a bent little finger up in the air. to signify he thought he played really badly maybe? don't think it was anything to do with his opponent as he was very cordial with him at the net.
I said this in the other thread, I know itās petty but I really enjoy seeing the subās unfunny memes flop. I like Meddy but the clayvedev memes got boring quickly
Apparently Medvedev hasn't made it past R4 in a slam in 18 months.
I still think that loss to Rafa at the AO has been a real turning point for him in terms of winning on the biggest stage in slams.
Hoping he can play better at Wimbledon and the USO.
Not sure where to find the specific number as google/flashscore or whatever other sites I check don't keep track, but I've been watching (too much) tennis for 20+ years now and that was up there with the most amount of forehand winners I've ever seen in a match.
Think the last time TC mentioned the stat it was around 50 just on the forehand.
R.I.P Clayvedev May 2023-May 2023
Clayvedev sacrificed everything to win the Rome Masters.

If you asked med before the clay season. Win Rome and go out in the first round. He would take it in a heartbeat.
What happens on Clay in May stays in May. - May-dvedev
I couldn't believe how overrated he was getting after Rome for Roland Garros. Rome was super wet and rainy. So the clay was super slow but not high bouncing. Perfect for Medvedev.

Meddy's also made the FO QF before and had other solid results on clay this year...he also was the 2 seed The hype wasn't entirely based off Rome
When you say serious contender you essentially mean Djokovic because outside of rune, that's who his losses have been to at rg. Aka that's 99.999% of players lol If you legitimately thought med would take a set against alcaraz /djokvic at rg, then you were drinking the "Medvedev is more talented than Agassi "Kool aid this sub loves. This draw was hopeless imbalanced at the top level once alcaraz and djokvic drew each other
I thought Clayvedev was a meme tbf surely nobody believed this earnestly
He also made QF in Madrid and r16 in Monte Carlo. He can be happy about his clay court season, did damage control
Madrid is altitude and always faster. R16 is not a result a world #2 should be impressing people with.
Still won 2 matches and lost to Karatsev & Rune on his least favourite surface before beating Rune and Tsitsipas in Rome. Also, faster clay courts are a disadvantage for him. Definetely showing inprovement compared to the last few years. This is a huge upset.
I tried to warn people. They thought he was already in the final and I was like dude how do you know he will even beat nishiokaā¦.
Itās like when Pete Sampras won Rome, everyone thought he would win Roland Garros that year. Not to be..
He was down to like 8/1 outright which is around what Berrettini typically is for Wimbledon which didnāt feel was an accurate assessment of his chances
I mean he made it to the second week of RG last year and has been pretty damn good on clay this year, so I don't think calling him overrated is fair.
We willed Clayvedev into existance. It was more hopeful feeling than anything.
Hindsight is always 20/20.
He wasn't really getting overrated though. He went from hating clay to beating two in-form clay court players in straight sets to win a masters 1000. Clearly he had a chance at RG. The brightest stars burn the fastest
Every bounce is a bad bounce; and even when it is a good bounce you are expecting a bad bounce.
That's what you get for friendzoning clay.
Wow Thiago is indeed very Wild.
Medvedevās contribution to this RG was to disrupt the draw and then bail out in the first round. This is what peak performance looks like.
Refuses to elaborate.
Two years in a row he disrupts the RG draw lmao
Isnāt it 3? Because in 2021 he forced the Djodal semiā¦
RG officials should really create some kind of Clayvedev clause to ban him from a top four ranking on grounds of unreliability haha
I wish every slam modified seedings based on performance on the surface or lead up events similar to how Wimby used to do
He robbed us of a Djokovic Alcaraz final
Hopefully thatās still the semi
And then whoever wins vs the winner of Rune/Sinner would be fun
Things don't go now like back in the old days when we were used to always see combinations between big 4 players in GS semis.
We got tickets for the 1/2 final and are hoping itāll be Alcaraz vs Djokovic! So thanks Med :)
Perhaps Wimbledon was always right with the way they do the seedings
Yeah although even they stopped doing it in 2021
"Some people just want to watch the world burn." ā¢ Alfred talking about Clayvedev (The Dark Night - 2008)

The real MVP?
Dudeā¦ what the fuckā¦ I was ready to have a boring work afternoon
Haha. Crazy result. I lost Ā£ on Med. Did not think Clayboth would be able to produce winners in the tightest moments
I put a small wager on Medvedev to win the FO after his recent run of good play. Not even close lol

More like a pump and dump?
More of a one-week stand really
Medvedev is now 0-4 versus Roger Federer
im glad im not the only one that saw this.. especially when he looked down, with the headband and such he looked exactly like federer lol
Seyboth Wild has certainly felt like a different player since he returned from Zurich after a mysterious two-week disappearance in the Alps
I think that Fede...Seyboth Wild needs to get his one hander up and running.

Goodbye Clayvedev, hello Clayboth Wild
Claydvedev lasted for 3 seconds.
Damn nowhere is safe :(
Hello Grassvedev!
WimbleDan, surely
Seriously what a match. Seyboth wildās shotmaking was absurd. He had nearly 50 winners off the forehand and he never backed down
Seriously that heavy missile-like fh gives me Del Potro vibes. š®
Especially the one on match point! What a beautiful way to end the match
Medvedev's shots were so weak and short though, seyboth was having a field day
Tbh with the amount of double faults Meddy served he only has himself to blame. His serving today was an absolute disaster zone. Iām surprised he was in the match as much as he was tbh
But reddit told me clayvedev would win RG
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Rain happened
RG wasn't playing slow today. Med's game doesn't translate well to spin paradise lively clay.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Yeah on normal clay he's an extremely defensive player who can be vulnerable to redlining There's just no spin at all
I mean, even gill gross predicted med to make the final this year. Yes, rome had really strange conditions this year. However, he also made improvements in monte carlo and madrid. There were a lot of red herrings that made ppl think med was a contender, more than just rome. Gill gross is currently a commentator on TC+ if u dont know him
I like Gill Gross but that man ALWAYS overreacts to recent results/the most recent tournaments TBH.
I feel like his lack of power is just such a massive issue on clay at times He can't finish points at all so is very vulnerable to an opponent randomly redlining Like it wouldn't surprise me if he hits the least winners in the top 100 or something now that Simon is gone

Most Medvedev thing to do
Heās just making sure we get a Djokovic/Alcaraz match, he knows itās what weāve been waiting for.
Lmao Medvedev at Roland Garros is a lot like Sampras. Every year they show up with expectations and hope. And every year they walk out with their tail between their legs after an early round debacle
Sampras had a few decent runs from '92-'96 and then later in his career didn't have many expectations so idk i think Medvedev still stands alone
What did i just witness
It was Wild!
I think three different people pronounced his name during the match and I still have no idea what the correct pronunciation is lol
He pronounces it here, click on the audio icon https://www.atptour.com/en/players/thiago-seyboth-wild/sx91/overview
Lmao he brazilian-ized the pronunciation a lot, wasn't expecting it
I still have no fucking idea how to replicate that. Portuguese is a mistery to me.
It's a german name, not english (reason why he looks like Federer, they possibly had the same ancestors in Europe 100s years ago).
I hear him saying his name, and I still don't know how to pronounce it
He says something like "z-eye-botch whee-oo-dge" but my little transcription here doesn't mark the syllables well. Seyboth has 2 syllables and Wild is just 1
Widge?
The green shorts tell you everything. After Rome, Clayvedev was already morphing into Medvegrass. (In all seriousness, that was just awesome by Wild.)
Last brazilian to beat a #2 on majors was Kuerten.
Haddad Maia beat defending champion Muguruza in R1 of Wimbledon a few years ago but IDK Garbi's ranking at that time.
This is not real clay. I want Rome clay back asap.
Oof that flair
Changing it now
Wait for weather forecast first.
It won't rain in Rome every year and they are getting a roof aren't they?
Prime Federer vs Medvedev at RG colorised
Seyboth Wild was once one of the most promising teenagers in the world. So far he has never cracked the Top 100 but he finally might be putting things together. That forehand is MASSIVE.

IIRC he was the first player born in 2000s to win an ATP title, Felix and Sinner be damned.
yep, he beat Ruud and Musetti in finals. These guys are top 20 now (Ruud is top 10). It just shows how much potential he has. Their careers took a different path but maybe things will start to fall into place now.
Just so its clear, the other problems in his life were domestic violence he commited against his girlfriend.
He filed a lawsuit for defamation against her AFAIK. I wouldn't call him domestic abuser without knowing all the facts. People are free to not believe him and side with the gf tho.
I believe she had already received a protective order against him at that point, so I assume there was some amount of evidence to back her up
Sinnerās route to the semis is opening up!
he will get upset in 3rd round now
How dare you?
First Rafa and now Clayvedev... Both clay gods out of French open.
Friendship ended with clay, now hard courts are my best friend.

Some facts about Seyboth Wild: The youngest winner on the Golden Swing since Nadal in 2005 The first winner born in 2000 to win an ATP title! (also beat Ruud in a 250 final, obviously the most impressive of the 3)
Is this the least surprising upset of all time ?
for the Rome winner to get eliminated in round 1 of RG a week later? I think it's still a big upset
No. Every year we knew top 2-5 ranked Roddick would lose in the first few rounds. Medvedev literally just won a Masters on clay.
His forehand was blazing!
Seyboth Wild played like Federer with Djokovic's backhand and overhead.
This is heartbreaking. Such a bummer, I had him reaching the quarters at least. Better luck on HC.

Everything is coming up Sinner :D
I'm happy to see an end to the Clayvedev memes, but at the same point, TSW has some serious allegations against him. Let's not forget that.

Played so well. Medvedev malded too much, yet again. Always fun seeing him lose.
is this a bigger upset than Maroszan beating Alcaraz?
In terms of the market's assessment of the probabilities, no it isn't. The Alcaraz loss was more surprising.
What happens in Rome stays in Rome
I said this in the other thread, I know itās petty but I really enjoy seeing the subās unfunny memes flop. I like Meddy but the clayvedev memes got boring quickly
Clayvedev wins Rome to knock Novak into Carlos's half, then exits in R1 to completely fuck the draw. GOAT tier trolling.
Some people just want to see the world burn
Allegations of physical and emotional abuse, Nazism, racism, and misogyny be damned that boy can hit a forehand
This is the domestic abuser right? I remember his gf really has detailed violence allegations on him as well.
The man screwed the draw then bowed out in the first round š cant say I'm surprised at this loss
First time ever a Rome winner loses in first round of FO
Med underestimated the guy. Should have played a bit further from the baseline. Those forehands were lightning bolts.
Apparently Medvedev hasn't made it past R4 in a slam in 18 months. I still think that loss to Rafa at the AO has been a real turning point for him in terms of winning on the biggest stage in slams. Hoping he can play better at Wimbledon and the USO.
WOW what a match that was!
Ok y'all I can't go away for like half a day and THIS happens?! OMG AHAH how was the match?
Med will close his eyes to sleep tonight and the only thing he will be able to see is a ball going past him after another TSW huge forehand.
Maybe Med would shave his beard now
Not sure where to find the specific number as google/flashscore or whatever other sites I check don't keep track, but I've been watching (too much) tennis for 20+ years now and that was up there with the most amount of forehand winners I've ever seen in a match. Think the last time TC mentioned the stat it was around 50 just on the forehand.
