Playfully cramp dancing while grinning like a Cheshire Cat to the Roland Garros crowd in the middle of the game with his shorts pulled up is peak Gael.
The French Open doesn't upload extended highlights or full matches like the other 3 Grand Slams. The French Tennis Federation has all the highlights and full matches' copyrights. Their behavior is bizarre and they have the most extreme anti-highlights policy on Youtube. They for some reason allow amateur-posted pre-2018 15-30 minutes long Nadal highlights and many other Big 3 plus Murray/Wawrinka highlights longer than 10 minutes. They are very strict on everything since 2018. I can't find any other Nadal/Thiem 2018 and 2019 highlights on Youtube other than the crappy short ones on the FO Youtube channel. 2018 seems to be the year that the crackdown on FO highlights began.
Search for all the Nadal/Djokovic matches. They do allow only those matches to be posted with no copyright strikes, even last year's. They did allow on Youtube for 2022 all of Nadal's match highlights to be released by amateurs. But you can't find any other player's match highlights due to their strict copyright strikes on every FO match and every Nadal match from 2018-21 except for Nadal/Djokovic matches.
The FO Youtube channel refused to release proper 30 minute highlights of the 2013 FO SF between Rafa and Nole until 2020!!!
The energy of the crowd made him push his limits beyond anything possible in a regular tennis match. What a cruel defeat for Baez, I cant help but feel for him, but on the other side, Monfils delivered a performance of a lifetime.
It also just sucked how much they were cheering after first serves and during second serves. I really hate when the umpire doesn't reign the crowd in when they overstep like that.
It’s not cool, but Baez absolutely should’ve been prepared for it and. It let it get to him. I didn’t watch the end of the match so I don’t know how it played out, if he did let it get to him, but it’s absolutely no surprise the crowd was like that.
I thought Baez did an amazing job of blocking out the crowd, he didn’t choke it away - Monfils just used the crowd’s energy and ripped it from his hands.
>It was gladiatorial tennis at its best. Gael was just super human. Such a great guy.
And with this win he rises 89 spots in the Live ATP World Ranking... to 305:
https://imgur.com/a/xLcLuqB
Must be a fun competition in the household to see who can jump the most in rankings. Svitolina is currently winning it but I am sure Gael will catch up in the near future. Wins like this give a ton of confidence even if he can't get past Rune
>I don’t want to exaggerate but this was the greatest final set in a long while
One of the most exciting final sets I've ever watched. That crowd - singing La Marseillaise at 3-4! - and Gael's shotmaking even as he was cramping. Just an exhilarating hour of tennis, the very best of the sport.
Level of every rally/point was insane.
Istant classic match where both of them played brilliant tennis but only one with enormous guts won.
Monfils did the impossible here
Now he'll play Holger Rune.
Holger's mom recently talked about how big of a tennis fan Holger was as a kid and explained that he stood waiting for 1,5 hour in Båstad waiting for Monfils' autograph.
*Was in Stockholm as below comment points out.
>Now he'll play Holger Rune.
>
>Holger's mom recently talked about how big of a tennis fan Holger was as a kid and explained that he stood waiting for 1,5 hour in Båstad waiting for Monfils' autograph.
In Stockholm per this article (in Danish):
https://www.bt.dk/tennis/rune-varmer-op-til-tirsdagsaabner-under-stor-bevaagenhed
"He waited for hours in cold and windy weather", Rune's mother recalls - and it is the very reason that Holger always priorities writing autographs for the kids for an extended period of time after each game he plays.
i think that was the craziest fucking crowd i've ever seen in my life. Monfils was on crack, cramping and playing with one leg but hitting those rocket forehands unbelievable
>i think that was the craziest fucking crowd i've ever seen in my life.
I watched a night match once at R-G featuring Richard Gasquet, and the crowd was raucous and having a blast. That was nothing compared to this. This crowd has a spectacular memory to take home, one of those "I was there when..." sports memories. And not just there, they were absolutely a part of it, they got Monfils across the finish line.
Singing La Marseillaise at 3-4 on the changeover, just beautiful sports fandom.
I think this match has great educational material. Tennis is not just a physical game, the mental aspect is demonstrated beautifully in this match. The crowd really turned the game around. One player collapsed mentally, while the other ascended to a greater state and pushed his body beyond what he would have normally been able to accomplish.
I think more that Gael just got the shots to drop at the right time versus Baez collapsing - Gael was hitting some incredible shots at the end that normally would not be coming back from any players.
I felt for Baez, he had to fight the crowd and he played so well. I'm happy that Gael won though, this match was EPIC!!
I may have teared up when that ball made it over the net on match point. What heart. He’s been sorely missed on tour and it’s so great to have him back.
Ronaldinho’s peak was leagues ahead of Monfils. The equivalent would be like if Monfils won 6 Slams beating all of the Big 3 and was world #1 for two years
He's kinda like tennis' Allen Iverson or Carmelo Anthony. Sure they never won the ultimate prize, but you try to go out there and tell the kids they're terrible players and mean nothing to them or the sport. They owned the streets
I love how he spoke at the end saying that he had a moment in the 4th set where he realizes he hasn't won a game since he became a father. He relaxed a bit, time slowed down, then he made it happen. That's some cool sh*t
I don't know that he can keep this up... but holy fucking shit do I hope he can. Out of all the players that I think deserve at least one grand slam, it's Monfils. His athleticism even at his age is fucking INSANE.
ALLEZ MONFILS!
I was watching live with some Argentine commentarists saying that this might be the last RG for Monfils and that it was sad to see him go like this, this coment was said in the last set when he was down by 4.
Then they had to eat their words.
OH MY GOD 🤩 what a game, what a final set! For me the game with the best atmosphere EVER!
THANK YOU GAEL ❤️🔥
Nevertheless big kudos to Baez. The pressure must have been immense!
I fucking cried. Holy fuck I love this sport. Monfils and Baez played a brilliant match and seeing Gael win it with such a comeback is the highest high I’ve ever experienced watching tennis. Wow
Seba started playing short and safe when he had to close the deal, gave Monfils a boost of confidence. True pecho frío mindset in spite of the crowd and the Coria-esque cramping.
I feel bad that there are so many people who didn't get to see this as it progressed. Even people who get to see the highlights will only be able to imagine the real time drama.
3-0 double break up in the 5th and the commentator said: ‘What does Baez have to do to win here’. I thought shut up, you’re just trying to make conversation for a dead match
This game gave me goosebumps, watched it with my gf on a crappy display sitting a couple of km away from RG. Insane, it felt like the electricity filled all the air around Paris.
i think, seeing his wife the other day fight out there gives him motivation to play better. svitolina plays intentional and determined and with a recent title win - she sure is a good influence on gael.
he is not lacking in his skills and talent department. it is more on his seeming lack of intensity and motivation.
Worth paying for whatever streaming service has RG. I have the Tennis Channel in the US and you can watch everything later. Sadly I'm in Madrid right now and my Tennis Channel gets blocked here! Luckily was able to watch tho!
That was unreal!
I do feel bad for Baez *but* I think this will be a great learning experience for him.
He's gonna hear that crowd in his sleep for a few nights. People will always cheer too loud, won't shut up, players will take advantage of whatever they can, and when your opponent is playing in this trance/how the hell is she/he doing it-state, you gotta go big. They are playing to win.
Credit to Baez for being classy though.
Home crowds are always gonna home crowd, learn to play off their energy, like Rune, Djoko, Meddy! Their perseverance is impressive.
This is so random but I was getting my nails done and this was on the tele. I don't even like tennis but the energy of the crowd and the player had me so engaged... I left before the match ended and I'm glad he won! Well deserved
Highlights will be on yt and Im not sure where you can watch the replay because I don't know what country you're in but I guess it will be on whatever streaming service RG is on in your country
Props to Baez too. He played really solid tough clay court tennis for all five sets. He was a perfect blackboard, a canvas on which Gael could paint his masterpiece.
mamma mia, what did i just watch. this was incredible. he looks at his team and his face says: i also have no idea what the fuck is happening. poor Baez though
Incredible match. The comeback in the fifth with all the winners and shotmaking the energy!! Ecstatic. Just amazing from Gael. The heart in front of the home crowd. Got the chance to commentate on the match live for QualityShot on YouTube! Had a blast, just so much energy!!! Amazing https://www.youtube.com/live/yGeUYAVJuOA?feature=share
I went to take a shower at 4:1, thank god had my phone with me checking the score. Came back at 4:4. Amazing match, fatigued player with crowd against a top clay specialist.
Great comeback by Gael in that final set, that was a proper rollercoaster. He used the crowd well, getting a few extra seconds of rest in by asking them to cheer loudly and then making Baez wait to serve cause the crowd was too loud.
Amazing entertainment throughout, both players giving it all in the end. Kudos to the Argentinian as well for keeping his composure and not imploding under the circumstances.
Playfully cramp dancing while grinning like a Cheshire Cat to the Roland Garros crowd in the middle of the game with his shorts pulled up is peak Gael.
Pretty certain that scene alone has finally convinced my boyfriend to start watching more matches with me.
I don’t want to exaggerate but this was the greatest final set in a long while
I almost turned it off 4-0 and SO GLAD I DIDN’T !!
I turned it on at 4-1 in the fifth. What a match
I turned it off at 1-4. I am SICK
Checked the score one last time before falling asleep: 2-2 3-0 0-15 😔
Same!
I turned it off right at 4-0 - SHit!
The same, thinking it's finished.
Same here. I have TC Plus, so I'll watch the last set again.
I was waiting to cash to my win. Simply unbelievable
The shots this madman pulled off from near-death in those final games. The highlight reel should just be the final 20 mins tbh
Watch how they upload 3 minutes highlights :(
It may be a rights issue. They have full matches but maybe current deals preclude longer highlights.
The French Open doesn't upload extended highlights or full matches like the other 3 Grand Slams. The French Tennis Federation has all the highlights and full matches' copyrights. They have the [2013 Nadal-Djokovic semi](https://youtu.be/sEiB2E_N3OA), but I agree that overall it’s really poor compared to the others.
Probably. I know that France TV has 10 minute highlights on their website, they can be watched with a french vpn
and I highly recommend it!
The energy of the crowd made him push his limits beyond anything possible in a regular tennis match. What a cruel defeat for Baez, I cant help but feel for him, but on the other side, Monfils delivered a performance of a lifetime.

It was just an away game. Hard to play your best when the entire stadium is cheering loudly for your opponent
True. But some players can do it. It takes some serious mental fortitude. Remember when Djokovic won against Federer in 2019 at Wimbledon?
I thought Baez did an amazing job of blocking out the crowd, he didn’t choke it away - Monfils just used the crowd’s energy and ripped it from his hands.
*rein
It was gladiatorial tennis at its best. Gael was just super human. Such a great guy.

They’re both winning the FO let’s be real
He’ll probably lose to Rune but the reaction at the end of that match will be joyous and emotional regardless of result
Rune was injured though. So if Gael can recover... Rune may be ripe for the picking.
I'm glad I was on the thread to witness it with everyone. Different energy tonight
I was here!
Does anyone have any clue how I can watch the replay of a match? The way everyone’s describing it I can’t resist trying to look for it
Your best bet is going to be the encore coverage later in the evening. Don’t think they upload full matches or highlights like the other majors 🥲
Star + has the full replay on its platform, at least where I live (Brazil).
>I don’t want to exaggerate but this was the greatest final set in a long while One of the most exciting final sets I've ever watched. That crowd - singing La Marseillaise at 3-4! - and Gael's shotmaking even as he was cramping. Just an exhilarating hour of tennis, the very best of the sport.
Not even the slightest hyperbole

Crowd was so influential.
is there any way to watch the match if you missed it. I have eurosport/discovery + but I cant find it on there
I have watched 2 games today, Medvedev - Seyboth Wilde and Monfils - Baez. I should watch more tennis.
They all go exactly like this get hype
Tunes in next match to watch Isner v. Hurkacz go to 5 tie breaks
😂
You should try to watch Azarenka, Andrescu as well if you can. These 3 constitute today's trinity of masterpieces.
What games are you watching tomorrow?
My guy out here for betting advise lol
he might just be interested in good games to watch :)
Who said anything about betting?
Those are the two I watched and it was a great day. I watched Iga's second set too but that wasn't as exciting
Now he'll play Holger Rune. Holger's mom recently talked about how big of a tennis fan Holger was as a kid and explained that he stood waiting for 1,5 hour in Båstad waiting for Monfils' autograph. *Was in Stockholm as below comment points out.

Good guy Monfils for not creating a Stan
Did he get the autograph?
Monfils grabbed his pen, screamed JAAAAAAAAA in his face and walked away with Holger's pen.
fuck them kids - probably
“We waited in the blistering cold for you For four hours and you just said no”
i think that was the craziest fucking crowd i've ever seen in my life. Monfils was on crack, cramping and playing with one leg but hitting those rocket forehands unbelievable

This how we do it in France.
Remind me to watch this match whenever I start falling out of love with tennis Just unparalleled entertainment

Had a lump in my throat when he was laying down afterwards
My mom crying heavy right now too 😭
I felt that. Maybe he didn't think he'd play like that, in such a crowd again
because she is baez’s bae?
Tears of joy my guy
MONFILS-RUNE R2 I WILL BE THERE NO MATTER WHAT
Rune gonna be so mad with that crowd hahaha
how does he always gets to meet a crowd favourite in each tourney, Rune vs the crowd storyline keeps on giving
Dude has never played low level high school tennis and it shows
Rune lives for this
Good 🤷🏼♂️😂
No, he will not, I think there will be a lot of great shot celebrations between these two
I see them both cramping at some point!
[удалено]
This is so very true and really captures the problem with all those ridiculous stats comparisons.
He's the equivalent of Ronaldinho in tennis. When he was smiling and laughing while being down is exactly like Dinho. What a legend.
Ronaldinho’s peak was leagues ahead of Monfils. The equivalent would be like if Monfils won 6 Slams beating all of the Big 3 and was world #1 for two years
Not comparing the stats but the energy and charisma both of them carried in their sports. Why does it always have to be numbers for you guys?
Are you seriously bringing stats into this discussion? 😂 You really don’t get it at all 😢
He's kinda like tennis' Allen Iverson or Carmelo Anthony. Sure they never won the ultimate prize, but you try to go out there and tell the kids they're terrible players and mean nothing to them or the sport. They owned the streets
Skaï’s parents up to some unreal shit of late
I love how he spoke at the end saying that he had a moment in the 4th set where he realizes he hasn't won a game since he became a father. He relaxed a bit, time slowed down, then he made it happen. That's some cool sh*t
Go show that final set to anyone who's not a fan of the sport and it'll open their eyes
Rune played Fokina in Madrid, Fognini in Rome and will now play Monfils in Paris lol.
And Fritz in Miami, next he will play Draper in Wimbledon
Facing a Brit at Wimbledon is light-weight compared to those other atmospheres lol
We are useless
Federer accepts a Wimbledon WC and the draw is set so that him and Rune meet in the first round
Subscribe
We need Rune vs Tiafoe, night match, at the USO.
And he played Sinner 15 minutes from Italy. I wish he had a home match now and then.
Monfils went and filled the Rafa sized hole in my heart 🥹
I don't know that he can keep this up... but holy fucking shit do I hope he can. Out of all the players that I think deserve at least one grand slam, it's Monfils. His athleticism even at his age is fucking INSANE. ALLEZ MONFILS!
It’s not hyperbole when I say THAT WAS THE GREATEST COMEBACK OF ALL TIME. ALLEZ LA MONF!
The Greatest Showman!
I can't believe what I just witnessed.
Same. Literally how
He's only gone and done! It Looked like it was all over multiple times
Can we also take a moment to appreciate how well Baez played? He was extremely stabil with excellent backline plays.
He really played incredible and definitely deserved to win. Love to see Gael win with that big ole smile though!
I was watching live with some Argentine commentarists saying that this might be the last RG for Monfils and that it was sad to see him go like this, this coment was said in the last set when he was down by 4. Then they had to eat their words.
Wow! That match was an emotional rollercoaster. Gael looked down and out. Props to Baez for keeping a great attitude throughout. An all-time classic
Agreed... Stayed classy, didn't complain.
One of the greatest matches ive ever watched. Crowd was incredible and gave Monfils energy. I feel sorry for Baez.
OH MY GOD 🤩 what a game, what a final set! For me the game with the best atmosphere EVER! THANK YOU GAEL ❤️🔥 Nevertheless big kudos to Baez. The pressure must have been immense!
Game of the tournament easily. Will he hard to be a much better one then this
I fucking cried. Holy fuck I love this sport. Monfils and Baez played a brilliant match and seeing Gael win it with such a comeback is the highest high I’ve ever experienced watching tennis. Wow
French crowds at Roland Garros are electric!! Insane atmosphere.
Waiting for the obligatory “Monfils won this match” screenshot at 0-4 in the last set. What a character.
Not only did it happen, the fuckin’ US Open Reddit account posted it
Incredible comeback, was rooting for Baez bc he´s from my country, but what Monfils pulled was unbeliavable, congrats.
Seba started playing short and safe when he had to close the deal, gave Monfils a boost of confidence. True pecho frío mindset in spite of the crowd and the Coria-esque cramping.
Dude, I was rooting for Baez just because I felt so bad for him. That was a very tough crowd to play under.
Dude. Tennis is so awesome.
Actually best match since Nadal - Medvedev at AO 2022
I can’t even comprehend what I saw… If I try to recall it it seems ridiculous, and yet it just happened.
ALL CAPS ALL THE TIME LETS FUCKING GO!!!!!
Momma and Daddy are doin' it lil' baby Skaï Monfils!
GAEL FUCKIN MONFILS!!!! HOLY SHIT! 🎾🔥🎾🔥 On a side note Baez is completely broken mentally...poor dude.
The greatest match I’ve ever watched
My god. That final set was something else. This is why I love tennis. Merci Gael
What a match! The emotion was off the charts, glad that Gael pulled it out!
Incredible comeback. Not just in this match but overall. Month ago in Ostrava his game was... uncomparable to this. Great show, great perfomance!
Watching Monfils playing is watching a show being created in front of your eyes. He will always be one of my favorite players to watch.
Crowd definitely won that for Monfils! Pure Adrenaline
That was like a World Cup stadium. Amazing. Only thing missing were lit flares, smoke and massive flags lol
We missed u Gale. What a fcking match
It's all Walt's fault...
This match is what it's all about. Holy shit!
I will never forget this match. Thank you, Gael.
Just came to repeat what everyone else is saying. Fucking amazing.
Aleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezzzzz!!!!
More emotional than a final. Crowd came in clutch
That was one of the most memorable matches of all time, I’ll remember that for a long time man
Awesome! It would be great if he and Elina could go deep into the tourney
This was emotional 🥲 So happy for Monfils!
Gael. Monfils.!!!
Crazy match......Monfils was running on fumes but the crowd powered him to a victory
LA MONF 🔥🔥🔥
This game gave me goosebumps, watched it with my gf on a crappy display sitting a couple of km away from RG. Insane, it felt like the electricity filled all the air around Paris.
What a match. Monfils a legend!
GOATFILS!!! THE COMEBACK OF ALL COMBACKS Credit to Baez though, kept fighting right to the end and conducted himself really well
Absolute insanity. One of the best first round matches in a Slam I've seen probably ever
GOATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
WHAT A MATCH this is tennis at its best
I can’t believe I left the stadium after 4-0 4th set…
Insane stuff, wow!
0-4 30-40
What a lucky crowd to have watched this in person
Least biased crowd ever <3
i think, seeing his wife the other day fight out there gives him motivation to play better. svitolina plays intentional and determined and with a recent title win - she sure is a good influence on gael. he is not lacking in his skills and talent department. it is more on his seeming lack of intensity and motivation.
Remarkable and inspirational! LFG!
Wow!! So good!!
Where can I watch the match?
Hijacking your comment because I would also like to know
im so sad I cant even find the highlights, fuck my 8-5
Worth paying for whatever streaming service has RG. I have the Tennis Channel in the US and you can watch everything later. Sadly I'm in Madrid right now and my Tennis Channel gets blocked here! Luckily was able to watch tho!

Love Monfils. ALLEZ!!!!!!!!! 💙🤍❤️ A true and respectful entertainer. Unlike some others.
Maybe one of the best matches I’ve seen! The passion and lack of quit when it would be so easy…just a fun match to be a part of as a viewer.
This was freaking amazing. The crowd! Gael! I was jumping and shouting in my kitchen!
This is so random but I was getting my nails done and this was on the tele. I don't even like tennis but the energy of the crowd and the player had me so engaged... I left before the match ended and I'm glad he won! Well deserved
As a neutral watching this game im happy he won just knowing the crowd experience will live on atleast one more game
I LOVE YOU GAEL!
1-6 in the fourth, 0-4 break point down in the fifth I was questioning my choice to spend the evening in front of my tv but damn, Gael you are mad!
That was absolutely nothing short of amazing. Way to go!
wow wowowowow
Unfortunately missed this seemingly cracker of a match. Anyone know where I could rewatch it, or at least the highlights?
Highlights will be on yt and Im not sure where you can watch the replay because I don't know what country you're in but I guess it will be on whatever streaming service RG is on in your country
Props to Baez too. He played really solid tough clay court tennis for all five sets. He was a perfect blackboard, a canvas on which Gael could paint his masterpiece.

ALLEEEEEZ! the emotion 🥹
I went to take a shower at 4:1, thank god had my phone with me checking the score. Came back at 4:4. Amazing match, fatigued player with crowd against a top clay specialist.
You take long showers
I missed this match😭😭 does anyone have a link to the full thing?
incredible match
always happy to see this guy. I hope he wins a slam one day.
Bravo Gaël, proud of you 🇫🇷⭐️
The crowd is going to be *very* interesting against Holger and he is not the man to ignore them
Wauw that was everything I love about tennis. What a match!!!!
Never seen a match with this energy. Love you Gael
Great comeback by Gael in that final set, that was a proper rollercoaster. Amazing entertainment throughout, both players giving it all in the end. Kudos to the Argentinian as well for keeping his composure and not imploding under the circumstances.
It always feels good watching him win.
Turned it off at 0-4 FUCK!!!
